QatarEnergy signs agreement for Guyana offshore exploration block

QatarEnergy has signed a production sharing agreement for shallow-water Block S4 offshore the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. The block was awarded through the 2022 Guyana Licensing Round.Under the terms of the agreement, QatarEnergy will hold a 35% share, while its partners TotalEnergies (the operator) will hold 40%, and Petronas will hold 25%. Commenting on this agreement, His Excellency the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said: “We are pleased to secure this exploration block in Guyana, further building on the strategy to expand our global upstream exploration activities.” He added: “I would like to thank the Government of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and our partners in the block for their valued support and co-operation.We look forward to working together to deliver on our exploration objectives.” Block S4 covers an area of 1,788sq km and is situated approximately 50-100km from Guyana’s coast, in water depths of 30-100m.

Discussions during the meeting centred on enhancing bilateral co-operation and expanding business relations with one of the important buyers of Qatari LNG.

His Excellency the Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, held meetings with senior Japanese energy industry leaders on co-operation in the energy sector in Tokyo Monday. Al-Kaabi met with senior executives of major energy and electric power companies including Yukio Kani, Chairman and Global CEO of JERA; Kenichi Hori, President and CEO of Mitsui; Akiya Kotani, Executive Vice-President of Kansai Electric; Shunichi Kito, Representative Director, and President and CEO of Idemitsu; Shigeru Yamada, Representative Director and Group CEO of Cosmo Energy Holdings; and Fujita Masahiro, Representative Director and Chairman of JAPEX. Discussions during the meetings focused on existing and future co-operation and further strengthening bilateral relations in the energy sector.

QU in QatarEnergy LNG engineering conference

Qatar University (QU) participated in the 19th QatarEnergy LNG Engineering Conference, which featured leading experts, professionals, and decision-makers from around the world.The QU pavilion presented a wide range of research projects and technological innovations that highlight QU’s efforts in supporting sustainable energy and digital transformation. Among the innovations was a hybrid energy harvesting system combining piezoelectric and electromagnetic technologies for remote sensing in oil and gas pipelines and nondestructive testing solutions.The system using ultrasonic waves assesses sustainable construction materials such as recycled fibre-reinforced concrete and 3D printing technologies.QU revealed several technical solutions that support sustainability and industrial safety. These included the innovative ClearExhaust device, capable of reducing diesel engine emissions by up to 30%; a smart vibration isolation system using hybrid magnetic materials; the automated Raqeeb platform for heat stress monitoring; and a high-efficiency car radiator designed for hot climates. In the field of smart and robotic technologies, QU presented advanced innovations that improve performance in industrial and environmental sectors. Highlights included HazBot, a robot for inspections in hazardous environments; robotic systems for inspecting gas tanks and complex pipelines; the MasterPi system for developing automation solutions; and a spherical photovoltaic solar system designed to enhance solar energy efficiency.Faculty members and students also participated in scientific sessions and presentations, in addition to showcasing research posters addressing themes such as innovation, technology, sustainability, integrity, operational reliability and safety, and best practices in operational excellence.

Efforts continued to support the development of a CCUS framework and standards for Qatar, ensuring a robust and scalable approach to reducing emissions, QatarEnergy noted.

QatarEnergy aims to scale carbon capture and storage capacity to 11 mtpy by 2035

QatarEnergy aims to scale its carbon capture and storage capacity to 7–9 million tonnes per year (mtpy) by 2030 and over 11 mtpy by 2035.Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) is central to QatarEnergy’s lower-carbon strategy.So far, QatarEnergy has successfully deployed 2.2 mtpy of CCS capacity in Qatar, capturing CO2 from feed gas used in LNG trains and sales gas assets, contributing to lower-carbon LNG exports.“Since the inception, we have successfully captured and stored around 7.5mn metric tonnes of CO2,” QatarEnergy noted in its latest Sustainability Report.QatarEnergy’s North Field East (NFE), North Field South (NFS), and North Field West (NFW) expansion projects will be integrated with CCS infrastructure, targeting total capacity of over 5.5 mtpy once fully operational.Other CCUS plans include expanding CCS capacity at existing LNG trains, capturing CO2 in the production of lower-carbon ammonia, studying post-combustion carbon capture at gas-fired turbines, further design modifications of the existing CCS infrastructure to increase the annual injection capacity closer to its design limits and developing infrastructure to pilot utilisation of captured CO2 from RLIC for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project in Dukhan.Key CCUS developments in 2024 included QatarEnergy LNG North and South CO2 Capture Project and CO2 Export Pilot Project.In respect of QatarEnergy LNG North and South CO2 Capture Project, it aims to capture around 4MTPY of CO2 from the existing LNG facilities by compressing and injecting it via six wells within RLIC by 2030.CO2 Export Pilot Project: This project will transfer captured CO2 from QatarEnergy LNG facilities in RLIC to Dukhan for EOR.The captured CO2 will be dehydrated, compressed, and transported via a new 154 kilometers pipeline to Dukhan.The pilot project is part of QatarEnergy’s long-term strategy for the redevelopment of Dukhan fields that will contribute to the recovery of additional crude.The pilot project is expected to last for five years, and after the completion of a successful pilot phase a full field development is planned for the other parts of Dukhan.The project will directly reduce CO2 emissions because some of the injected CO2 will remain in the reservoir after injection. The project is expected to start before the end of 2027.“Efforts continued to support the development of a CCUS framework and standards for Qatar, ensuring a robust and scalable approach to reducing emissions,” QatarEnergy noted.

Mekdam Holding bags QR 204mn contract from QAFCO

Mekdam Holding Group has bagged a contract from Qatar Fertiliser Company (QAFCO) to execute a strategic contract valued at QR203.9mn.The contract covers the supply of Tier-1 manpower to support major industrial projects, notably the carbon capture and storage (CCS) project and the QatarEnergy urea project.This contract -- which represents a significant step towards strengthening the operational capabilities of national industrial projects -- will run for a duration of five years, starting on October 1, 2025, with an option to extend for an additional five years, Mekdam said in a regulatory filing with the Qatar Stock Exchange.Under the agreement, Mekdam will provide a highly qualified workforce in line with the highest international standards, ensuring that QAFCO’s requirements are met efficiently across all phases of project execution and operations.Winning this strategic contract reflects the confidence that leading national institutions place in the capabilities and expertise of Mekdam Holding Group.It also reaffirms the group’s firm commitment to delivering advanced technical solutions that align with the state’s vision for the development of the energy sector and related industries.

QatarEnergy doubled country's solar capacity to 1,675MW of renewable electricity since June 2022, the energy major said Tuesday.QatarEnergy is currently building the Dukhan solar power plant, which will double Qatar's solar power generation capacity to more than 4,000MW of renewable energy.The Dukhan plant, one of the largest in the world, will be developed in two phases, reaching a total electricity generation capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) by mid-2029.Once completed, it will double Qatar’s solar power production capacity, contributing significantly to the country’s renewable energy goals.The 800-megawatt (MW) Al-Kharsaah solar power plant, Qatar’s first such facility, began supplying electricity to Qatar’s national grid in June 2022.Since then, QatarEnergy has built and operated the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed solar power plants with a combined capacity of 875MW, doubling Qatar's production capacity to 1,675MW of renewable electricity.QatarEnergy established QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions in 2017 with the purpose of financing, building, operating, and maintaining solar power facilities, and selling electricity generated from solar power within the State of Qatar.Recently, QatarEnergy signed an agreement with Samsung C&T's Engineering & Construction Group (Samsung C&T) for the construction of a world-scale solar power plant in Dukhan.When completed, the Dukhan solar power plant, along with Al-Kharsaah, Mesaieed, Ras Laffan solar power plants will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.7mn tonnes annually, while contributing up to 30% of Qatar’s total peak electricity demand.According to QatarEnergy, the Dukhan solar power plant will begin the first phase of production by adding 1,000MW of power to the Kahramaa grid towards the end of 2028.The new plant will utilise a solar tracker system and will enhance efficiency by installing inverters capable of operating flawlessly in a high-temperature environment.

QatarEnergy signed an agreement with Samsung C&T's Engineering & Construction Group (Samsung C&T) for the construction of a world-scale solar power plant in Dukhan, about 80 kilometers west of Doha.The Dukhan solar power plant, one of the largest in the world, will be developed in two phases, reaching a total electricity generation capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) by mid-2029. Once completed, it will double Qatar’s solar power production capacity, contributing significantly to the country’s renewable energy goals.The agreement was signed by HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, and Sechul Oh, President & CEO of Samsung C&T during a special ceremony held at QatarEnergy’s Headquarters in Doha. The event was attended by Abdulla bin Ali Al-Theyab, President of Kahramaa, and senior executives from both companies.Commenting on this occasion, Minister al-Kaabi said: “This agreement is an important milestone in our effort to manage the environment in a manner that balances economic and social development with environmental protection, as stipulated by Qatar National Vision 2030. QatarEnergy, partners launch construction of final major components of Iraq’s Gas Growth Integrated Project

HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi, also the President and CEO of QatarEnergy and Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, met in Baghdad on Sunday Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Prime Minister of Iraq, to announce the start of construction of the Common Seawater Supply Project (CSSP) and Phase 2 of the Artawi Oil Field Redevelopment project (Artawi Phase 2 Project).The two projects represent the final major components of Iraq’s Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a multi-phase initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s energy infrastructure, currently being developed by the GGIP partners: QatarEnergy (25%), TotalEnergies (45%, operator), and Basra Oil Company (30%).The signing took place during a special ceremony held under the patronage of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and attended by HE al-Kaabi, Hayyan Abdul Ghani al-Sawad, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, and senior Iraqi officials and executives from the three project partners.At the same ceremony, QatarEnergy and its partners, TotalEnergies and Basra Oil Company, signed a joint statement with the Government of Iraq, represented by al-Sudani, and the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, represented by al-Sawad regarding the GGIP, to reaffirm the strong partnership between the parties and their joint commitment to the successful execution of the various projects comprising the GGIP.Commenting on the occasion, HE al-Kaabi said: “This milestone marks a pivotal step in our shared journey with Iraq toward energy resilience and sustainability. The launch of the CSSP and the Artawi Phase 2 Project reflects our deep commitment to Iraq’s energy sector and economic growth.”HE al-Kaabi added: “We are proud to collaborate with TotalEnergies and Basra Oil Company on this transformative initiative, and we extend our sincere appreciation to the Iraqi leadership and authorities for their continued support and partnership in making this vision a reality.”The CSSP will process and transport 5mn barrels of seawater per day to the main oil fields in southern Iraq. It will significantly reduce freshwater abstraction from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, helping alleviate regional water stress and support agricultural sustainability.By freeing up 250,000 cubic metres of freshwater daily, the project contributes to Iraq’s long-term water security. The plant will be operated by the Basra Oil Company.The Artawi Phase 2 Project will increase oil production from the Artawi field to 210,000 bpd starting in 2028. Upon completion, the project will position Artawi as one of Iraq’s lowest-emission oil production sites.With total investments exceeding $13bn, the GGIP is designed to enhance the development of Iraq’s natural resources to improve the country’s electricity supply.It comprises a number of mega-projects for the recovery of gas that is currently flared at three oil fields in southern Iraq to supply electric power plants, the redevelopment of the Artawi oil field, the construction of a 1 GWac (1.25 GWp) solar farm and for the treatment of significant quantities of seawater to be used for pressure maintenance in a number of oil fields.
