Qatar Tourism Awards winners set sights on new milestones after Ghabga celebration

Past winners of the Qatar Tourism Awards hailed their victories as transformative milestones, pledging to build on their success as the sector continues to grow rapidly and expand globally. Award-winning tourism leaders have described their Qatar Tourism Awards triumphs as defining moments that propelled growth, visibility and renewed ambition, as alumni gathered at the recent Ghabga celebration.Famous Aluya, CEO of Oryx Group Events and Tourism and winner of the Cultural Excellence Experience in the first edition, said the recognition was both fulfilling and motivating. “For us, it was a fulfilling moment because we were just genuinely contributing our own quota to the Qatar tourism sector,” he said, noting that his company focuses on projecting Qatar into African markets and attracting African visitors to the country.“We were very excited to see that our little efforts were being recognised,” Aluya noted, adding that the award “became a propeller for us that gave us the energy to do more”. Highlighting Qatar’s broader trajectory, he said the country’s tourism growth reflects “so much intentionality” from the leadership, infrastructure development and support for SMEs.Bilal Dridi, head of Marketing, Communication and PR at Assets Hospitality overseeing Embassy Suites by Hilton Doha Old Town, said winning Outstanding Four-Star Hotel for Service Excellence in 2024 and 2025 was “a mesmerising experience”. “When you hear your property name, you will definitely see the reflection of the hard work, the dedication and all the commitment that the teams made,” he said.Describing the award as a yearly benchmark, Dridi said: “Qatar Tourism Award is now one of the milestones that we set every year.” He confirmed plans to apply in additional categories, aligning with Qatar’s hospitality ambitions under Vision 2030.Meanwhile, Ammar Samad, general manager of Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som and winner of Hotelier of the Year, said the accolade brought vital visibility to Qatar’s wellness sector. “This award is amazing because it creates visibility on the importance of well-being of the mind, the body, and the spirit,” he said. As the first wellness resort in Qatar and the Middle East, Zulal has seen growing international demand, particularly from the UK and German-speaking markets.With applications for the next edition expected to open soon, winners say the awards continue to inspire excellence and raise the bar across Qatar’s thriving tourism landscape.

QT Awards designed to celebrate excellence in tourism sector: Aljaber

Qatar Tourism (QT) highlighted the expanding global reach of its awards programme during the second Alumni Network Ghabga, held at Barahat Msheireb, unveiling new international rankings and collaborations achieved by past winners. Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Omar Abdurrahman Aljaber, Chief Tourism Development Officer, said the awards were designed “to celebrate excellence in the tourism sector,” spanning hospitality, hotels and individuals who contribute to the industry’s growth.“We are awarding excellence,” Aljaber said. “The one who receives this award needs to focus more and work harder to retain it. It is very difficult to keep it, but the award helps the winner in many different ways.”Among the milestones announced was the achievement of Harvest Coffee, which won in the café category and was ranked 44th among the world’s best cafés following an international evaluation last month. “We are very proud today that Harvest Cafe, after winning the Qatar Tourism Award, became one of the best 100 cafes in the world,” Aljaber said, adding that the recognition and exposure generated by the award “helped and supported them to reach this position.”The event also spotlighted a collaboration between Chef Hessa al-Sulaiti, a previous winner in the Authentic Qatari Cuisine category, and Raffles Hotel. “We are very proud that this kind of collaboration has started between the winners,” he said, noting that the partnership resulted in a dedicated iftar and suhoor menu at the hotel.Aljaber stressed that the impact of winning extends well beyond the ceremony itself. “Once they win the award, the focus will be on them. Business continuity will keep growing,” he said. He confirmed that the next edition of the awards will be announced in April and will introduce new categories. Previous winners and first-time applicants are encouraged to apply. “We invite everyone to resubmit again with the new application,” Aljaber said. “We hope to see you on the stage.”

Qatar’s tourism ambition becomes reality

There were 5.1mn foreign visitors to Qatar in 2025, the annual report by Qatar Tourism has shown, confirming impressive growth in the tourism industry, a key part of a strategic commitment to diversify the economy.At the start of the 2020s there were around 2mn visitors a year, and a policy commitment was set to attract 6mn annually by 2030. At the time, it appeared to be an optimistic target, so to attract more than 5mn by 2025 is a creditable achievement.In late 2022 and early 2023, a strengthening dollar was a factor making visits to the Gulf more expensive for tourists. Since then, there has been the election of Donald Trump to the US Presidency and a policy of a weaker dollar. Furthermore, tight restrictions on visa applications by many western countries for visitors from Asia have boosted the appeal of Gulf states.But the attraction of the country counts for more than currency fluctuations, and in this many imaginative initiatives have paid off.Preparation for hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022 included major investment to expand and modernise infrastructure, especially in transport, and to boost the number and quality of hotel spaces. There was a vision to ensure that this investment was for the long-term, and Qatar has continued to host major events. The World Cup was a one-off, but football is not the only sport, and sport is not the only mass audience event. An annual Formula 1 grand prix is a huge attraction. Golf is another: The Qatar Masters has been running since 1998, attracting top professionals from around the world. Even without the World Cup, Qatar still attracts major footballing clubs. The Qatar Football Festival, due to take place in late March, will feature Argentina and Spain, as well as national sides from the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Visit Qatar has organised hotel and flight packages for fans, easily accessible on its website.Headline events include the arts as well as sport. Concerts to be staged this year include superstar singers such as Shakira and John Legend, who will be performing in Doha in April. This month, Qatar is hosted Art Basel Qatar, part of the Art Basel series of curated exhibitions that started in Switzerland in 1970. It’s the first time that this influential series of fairs for the contemporary art world was held in the Middle East.Qatar Tourism’s report for 2025 indicates a slightly unbalanced provision of different types of hotels. Five-star hotels attracted the most visitors, but a lower occupancy rate, at around 65%, compared with one- to three-star hotels, at over 80%. This shows that there is potential to boost the supply of mid-ranking hotels. The government should encourage such a development, with subsidies if necessary. It should also encourage the development of tourism agencies.Overall, room occupancy nudged upwards in 2025, at 71% across all categories, compared with 69% in 2024, which in turn was sharply higher than 2023 when it was just 58%.Hotel apartments constitute another important resource. Many families will need more than one bedroom, and would often prefer self-catering to eating in a restaurant for every meal.A significant detail in the annual report is that nearly a third of visitors in 2025, 32%, arrived by land. Many visitors are from neighbouring Gulf states, and the long-distance road network in the Gulf is efficient and modern.Land transport is set to become even more important given the plan to build a railway line, with a bullet train linking Riyadh to Doha, confirmed in December 2025. Journey time is set to be as little as two hours. This is set to be a game changer for Qatar: For tourism and potentially other sectors too. The population of Riyadh is around 8mn, compared with 3mn for the whole of Qatar. It will be quicker for residents of Riyadh to travel to Doha than to many parts of Saudi Arabia, and the train link will surely encourage investment in the Doha region.There will be more opportunities for Qataris to invest in Riyadh. Also, Qatar may attract soccer fans wishing to see games at the World Cup in Saudi Arabia in 2034. The train line is set to be completed by 2031.Qatar’s tourism growth reflects the broader goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy, which aim to diversify the economy and strengthen private sector participation. Tourism is evolving into a sustainable pillar of growth. The next phase should focus on balanced hotel supply, enhanced public transport connectivity, and a calendar of year-round events rather than seasonal peaks, ensuring stable and consistent demand throughout the year.The author is a Qatari banker, with many years of experience in the banking sector in senior positions.

Doha beckons as 2026 GCC Tourism Capital

The committee responsible for the GCC Tourism Capital has announced Doha as the GCC Tourism Capital for 2026, within the framework of strengthening joint tourism cooperation among GCC member states. This decision has been approved by the ministers responsible for tourism across the Gulf Cooperation Council.  The selection follows a comprehensive strategic bid submitted by Qatar Tourism (QT), which outlined the Qatar’s long-term vision for tourism and showcased Doha’s strengths as a destination that balances cultural authenticity, urban innovation, sustainability and quality of life.  The bid aligns closely with national priorities focused on economic diversification and positions tourism as a key driver of sustainable growth.  His Excellency Saad bin Ali al-Kharji, chairman of QT and chair of the Board of Directors of Visit Qatar, said: “The selection of Doha as the GCC Tourism Capital for 2026 marks an important milestone that underscores the success of our leadership’s strategic vision in establishing tourism as a central pillar of the National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.  This recognition reflects the qualitative progress achieved in building an integrated and sustainable tourism ecosystem that is competitive at both regional and global levels, supported by world-class infrastructure, strong connectivity, and an exceptional visitor experience.” Doha’s selection was underpinned by a set of strategic pillars, including its advanced transport and mobility infrastructure.  This encompasses Hamad International Airport, internationally recognised for operational excellence; Qatar Airways’ global network connecting Doha to more than 170 destinations worldwide; and integrated metro and tram systems to enable seamless visitor movement across the city.  Qatar has also enhanced its tourism proposition through flexible visa policies via the Hayya platform, in addition to ensuring a competitive and investor-friendly business environment, strong regional and international partnerships, and global promotional campaigns that have elevated the country’s profile on the international tourism map.  The bid also outlined Doha’s capacity to provide a varied tourism experience, supported by advanced infrastructure for hosting events and conferences, as well as a calendar of cultural, sporting, and entertainment events.  These strengths are complemented by Qatar’s firm commitment to sustainability, heritage preservation, the development of eco-tourism, and a growing leadership position in medical and wellness tourism.  QT and Visit Qatar are set to announce further details in the coming period regarding the “GCC Tourism Capital” programme in Doha. This will include joint Gulf initiatives, promotional campaigns, and a year-round programme of community, cultural, and entertainment events, designed to deliver sustainable economic and tourism impact and further strengthen Doha’s position within the regional and global tourism landscape.

Doha 2030 Asian Games Organizing Committee Board formed

As part of their efforts to promote digital innovation in the tourism sector, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), in collaboration with Qatar Tourism, held an awareness workshop under the SMEs Go Digital Program, the national initiative aimed at supporting SMEs in adopting digital solutions.The workshop focused on showcasing the role of digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) in driving innovation across hotels and tour operators. Two workshops have been organized in collaboration with Qatar Tourism emphasized the vital role of digital transformation in advancing the tourism industry, where participants explored practical AI applications that enhance customer experience, simplify operations, and open new avenues for SMEs growth.On this occasion, Faraj Jassim Abdulla, Director of the Digital Economy Department at MCIT, stated: "The SMEs Go Digital Program is a cornerstone of our strategy to foster a diverse and sustainable digital economy in Qatar. The program goes beyond offering technical solutions; it provides an integrated system of tools and services that empower SMEs to innovate business models, achieve greater operational efficiency, and expand their presence in local and global markets. QT organises townhall for ‘Taste of Qatar’ programme
