As part of its ongoing efforts to back the Palestinian health sector, the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has completed the signing of contracts with the 13th batch of Palestinian doctors enrolled on focused medical training programmes in Qatar for 2026-27.The new contracts fall under the annual Amiri Medical Scholarships Programme, co-implemented by the QRCS, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Palestine's ministry of health, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), and the programme's advisory committee."This is a new episode of the QRCS's exceptionally successful Amiri Medical Scholarships Programme, launched in 2003 as a long-term strategic initiative that demonstrates Qatar's vision of standing up for the Palestinian people and upgrading the health system there in a solidly scientific and professional manner,” said acting QRCS secretary-general Abdullah Sultan al-Qattan.He described the programme as one of the memorable deeds of His Highness the late Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, thanks to whom the programme came into existence 23 years ago.By enabling Palestinian doctors to pursue their academic and clinical postgraduate studies, the Amiri Medical Scholarships Programme serves as a capacity-building mechanism to bridge the medical staffing gap.The new cohort comprises 10 doctors from Gaza and the West Bank, who have successfully met the requirements and passed the placement tests.Upon their arrival in Doha, the doctors will embark on an advanced training programme in key medical specialisations such as internal medicine, emergency medicine, and anaesthesia.They are then expected return to their jobs at Palestinian healthcare facilities, to provide top-quality medical care and improve the healthcare services offered to Palestinians.  

As part of Qatar’s efforts to provide relief for those affected by the two devastating earthquakes that hit Venezuela recently, the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched an emergency humanitarian response to the disaster, in cooperation with Qatar’s government authorities and the international Red Crescent and Red Cross organisations.The QRCS said in a statement yesterday that, shortly after the magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes struck northwestern and central Venezuela respectively, the organisation activated its Disaster Information Management Centre (DIMC) to receive humanitarian situation updates and keep in touch with the Venezuelan Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).On board a relief aircraft of the Qatari airlift ordered by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the QRCS deployed a medical and relief aid shipment containing 24 tonnes of medications, medical supplies, and hygiene kits, as an immediate response to the emergency appeal issued by IFRC and UN agencies.In addition to the Qatari International Search and Rescue Group of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), the aircraft transported a medical and relief delegation from the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and QRCS, to take part in field relief efforts.The HMC sent anaesthesiology, plastic surgery, and orthopaedics specialists/consultants, while the QRCS sent emergency medicine, general surgery, and orthopaedics doctors, along with development projects, disaster response, and psychosocial support professionals.Given the difficult conditions and large-scale destruction in the affected parts of Venezuela, the QRCS launched a fundraising campaign to expand relief operations.“Inspired by Qatar’s tradition of helping affected people in times of crisis, this charitable drive has been launched to intensify vital humanitarian aid, address the limited local resources in Venezuela, avoid growth of the death toll, and bring back hope and reassurance to the affected families and communities,” said the assistant secretary-general for Relief and International Development at the QRCS, Mohamed Bader al-Sada. He called upon benevolent donors to support this noble endeavour, by donating via the website (https://qrcs.qa/R-Venezuela), mobile app (QRCS), donor service (66666364), home donation collection service (33998898), or donation agents/desks at malls and shopping centres.

 The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS), Qatar Charity (QC), and Sidra Medicine have concluded a specialised medical convoy for paediatric cardiac surgery and catheterisation in Yemen.Over one week, the volunteer team of medical professionals has been performing medical examinations, interventions, and life-saving surgeries for many children with congenital heart defects. The mission was more than successful, with a total of 107 free medical interventions for children (86 cardiac catheterisations and 21 open-heart surgeries) performed by the visiting consultant and specialist cardiologists, who were assisted by the medical staff at the Cardiovascular and Kidney Transplant Centre in Taiz. In terms of capacity-building, the programme involved a specialised training workshop for the medical staff at the host centre on ultrasound-guided arterial catheterisation techniques, to increase their skills and enhance the quality of medical services provided for critical cases, particularly in paediatrics. During the closing ceremony, the medical team was recognised for their dedicated efforts to serve and take care of the Yemeni children with heart conditions. The ceremony also honoured the representatives of the three partners – the QRCS, QC, and Sidra Medicine – whose contributions helped make this medical project a significant success.The organisers praised the level of co-ordination with local authorities and medical facilities in Yemen. They emphasised that such effective humanitarian partnerships help overcome the challenges facing the Yemeni health sector and give patients, especially children, a fresh hope for having a normal and stable life. Eng. Ahmed al-Sharaji, the head of the QRCS representation office in Yemen, said: “This medical convoy represents the QRCS’s commitment to providing continued and diverse humanitarian assistance for the people of Yemen, especially in healthcare.” “Together with our partners, we work to support Yemeni health facilities, bridge the gap in financial and human resources, and make them able to keep serving the population,” he said. “Also, transfer of expertise and capacity-building ensure sustainable and better healthcare for patients in the long term.” Dr Abdullah al-Nuaim, the director of the QC’s office in Yemen, commended that achievement. “We are proud of what we have accomplished, alongside our partners at the QRCS,” he said. “This joint humanitarian intervention was not just a one-time response, but rather a practical manifestation of our 2026-30 strategy, which deals with empowerment, sustainability, and maximised impact at top priorities.” “Today, we are working to deliver health projects that not only meet immediate needs but also leave a lasting developmental impact that makes a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable people in Yemen,” Dr al-Nuaim added. “This convoy sought to alleviate the suffering of children with weak hearts, allowing them to live normally like other children.” “This medical project was an essential humanitarian opportunity to perform over 100 major medical interventions for sick children within a short timeframe, with a view to improving their lives and reshaping their future,” said project manager Dr Monira al-Aini. “We focused on the highest quality and safety standards, while engaging local medical professionals throughout, helping to develop their expertise and upgrade paediatric cardiac surgery and catheterisation services in the country.” The success of the medical convoy was the outcome of cumulative efforts and fruitful partnership.Earlier, the QRCS and QC had supported the Cardiovascular and Kidney Transplant Centre in Taiz with state-of-the-art cardiac catheterisation equipment. As a result, the centre increased its capacity and performed more diagnostic and interventional catheterisation procedures free of charge for children and older people.This, by extension, helped ease the financial and health burden on poor patients.  

Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) and Qatar Charity (QC) launched a specialised medical convoy for paediatric cardiac surgery and catheterisation in Taiz, Yemen. Implemented in cooperation with Sidra Medicine and Yemen’s Ministry of Public Health and Population, the project aims to support the health sector and ensure free medical care for poor children. The launching ceremony was attended by Abdul-Qawi al-Makhlafi, First Deputy Governor of Taiz; Dr Abu Dhar al-Gendi, director of the Cardiovascular and Kidney Transplant Centre in Taiz; and representatives of QRCS and QC. **media[447008]** Until May 22, six consultants in cardiac catheterisation/surgery, intensive care, and anaesthesia will be working hand in hand with the local medical staff at the Cardiovascular and Kidney Transplant Centre in Taiz.The Qatari medical delegation comprises a select group of paediatric cardiology consultants and specialists, including Dr Younes Boudjemline, senior consultant cardiologist at Sidra Medicine (head of delegation); Dr Mustafa al-Muhaya, consultant cardiologist; Dr Mohamed al-Ashwal, consultant intensivist; Dr Mohamed al-Humairi, consultant anaesthetist; Dr Nabil al-Bahlouli, consultant cardiac surgeon, and Dr Sami al-Ahdal, consultant cardiac surgeon. As per the plan, 85 cardiac catheterisation procedures and 10 open-heart surgeries will be performed, as part of a medical and humanitarian programme to save lives and ease the financial burden on poor families in the governorate. **media[447007]** QRCS and QC supported the host centre with a specialised cardiac catheterisation machine, pegged at $1mn, which helped enhance the centre’s medical services. Thanks to that support, more than 500 diagnostic and 100 therapeutic catheterisations were performed free of charge, with all costs of medical care and supplies covered. Qatar would continue to work hard to bolster the country’s health system and alleviate the suffering of patients in need. 

As part of its ongoing efforts to ease the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched a project to distribute potable water to internally displaced people (IDPs) across the blockade. Implemented in co-operation with the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU), the USD600,000 project is aimed at helping meet everyday life needs and prevent water-borne diseases at IDP camps and shelters. According to head of QRCS representation office in Gaza, Dr Akram Nassar, the project involves the distribution of 30mn litres of water in total. “CMWU water tanker trucks are deployed on a daily basis to distribute water to the most affected areas in North Gaza, Gaza, Deir Al-Balah, and South Gaza Governorates, ensuring that IDPs have access to clean water for drinking and personal use,” he explained. Dr Nassar added, “The provision of potable water is not only a basic service, but also an urgent humanitarian necessity to protect thousands of lives, especially children. Displaced families have difficulty getting clean drinking water, amid overcrowded shelters and damaged water supply networks”. This emergency intervention comes at a time when the water and sanitation infrastructure in Gaza is critically failing. According to official reports, more than 85% of the water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed, rendering most water wells and water purification plants out of service. In many areas, groundwater is contaminated with wastewater, putting the two-million population at risk of water scarcity. QRCS pays special attention to supporting the water and sanitation sector in Gaza. Currently, there are plans to launch a set of water and sanitation projects, to be implemented throughout the year. These include the rehabilitation of water wells, installation of solar-powered pumps, construction of water purification plants equipped with solar panels, construction of water tanks and toilets, rehabilitation of sewage networks, and provision of makeshift mobile toilets.

The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) is continuing to implement a package of humanitarian projects in several countries as part of a Ramadan campaign for the year 1447 AH, aimed at supporting communities affected by crises and disasters and improving their living conditions.The QRCS guide has outlined the implementation of 25 water and sanitation projects across 10 countries, benefiting approximately 3,669,846 people, at a total cost of QR39,815,845.These projects include drilling artesian wells, installing solar-powered water pumps, constructing water tanks and water stations, operating mobile tankers to distribute clean drinking water in camps and orphanages, and building sanitary latrines.The assistant secretary-general for Relief and International Development at the QRCS, Mohammed Badr al-Sada, said that providing clean water is a priority for affected communities.The QRCS also plans to implement 12 projects to support education in eight countries, benefiting 24,230 boys and girls, at a total cost of QR12,967,250.These projects include maintaining and repairing schools, constructing and equipping classrooms, providing school supplies and backpacks, and sponsoring students.As part of multi-sector projects, the plan encompasses nine projects to support orphans and the elderly in four countries, benefiting more than 56,300 people, at a cost exceeding QR21,977,500, through the provision of food, clothing, shelter, and healthcare services to the targeted groups.

As part of Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS)’s Ramadan Campaign 1447 AH, themed “Keep Your Balance of Good Deeds Alive”, the daily On-the-Go Ramadan Iftar initiative at Katara Cultural Village has been warmly received by visitors. Now in its third consecutive year and sponsored by LuLu Hypermarket, the initiative is carried out by QRCS volunteers who distribute Iftar meals at the Ramadan Cannon area and to motorists at sunset. A total of 350 meals are distributed daily, totalling 10,150 throughout the campaign. Visitors have praised the initiative for reinforcing the spiritual values of Ramadan, particularly among children and youth. Beyond Qatar, QRCS continues to extend support to vulnerable communities worldwide through Ramadan food assistance projects. In Gaza, 17,833 food parcels are being distributed to displaced families at a total cost of $1.85mn, helping strengthen their resilience and enabling them to observe the holy month with dignity. In Afghanistan, QRCS has launched Ramadan food distributions for vulnerable families in the remote and mountainous provinces of Paktika and Zabul, in partnership with the Afghan Red Crescent Society and in coordination with local authorities and community leaders. Each parcel contains 94kg of essential food items, including flour, rice, sugar, beans, vegetable oil, dates, salt, and green tea. So far, 400 parcels have been distributed in Nematabad District (Paktika) and 364 in Mezana District (Zabul). Distributions will continue in Chahar Baran and Gomal districts, with 200 parcels allocated to each, bringing the total to 1,164 parcels at a cost of QR700,000. Two QRCS teams conducted field assessments in advance to identify priority needs. In Tanzania, QRCS concluded its Ramadan Iftar project in cooperation with the Tanzania Red Cross Society, distributing food parcels to 168 families—benefiting 1,176 individuals—across five districts in the Dar es Salaam region: Ilala, Kinondoni, Temeke, Ubungo, and Kigamboni. In Chad, QRCS partnered with Organisation Médicale Tchadienne and the Red Cross of Chad to distribute Ramadan parcels containing 45kg of rice, flour, sugar, and vegetable oil to 160 families, supporting 1,280 people. Preparations are also under way in Albania, where 500 Ramadan food parcels will be distributed by the Albanian Red Cross to 2,000 vulnerable individuals across several counties. In Somalia’s Northeast State, and in the presence of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, 1,951 one-month food parcels were distributed in Laascaanood, benefiting 10,806 people. Each parcel contained 66.5kg of essential items, including flour, rice, sugar, vegetable oil, infant formula, and dates. The assistance, valued at $184,931, also supported 210 patients with respiratory diseases and 690 persons with disabilities. QRCS has invited donors to contribute to its Ramadan campaign through its website, mobile app, donor service hotline, home collection service, or via bank transfer to designated accounts. 

The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched a winter clothes distribution project in Gaza as part of its ‘In Safe Hands’ winterisation relief campaign 2025-2026 to alleviate the suffering of thousands of displaced families amid harsh weather and humanitarian conditions inside shelter tents/centres.  Dr Akram Nassar, head of QRCS’s representation office in Gaza, said the project involved distributing coupons to 5,000 displaced families in three main distribution points: Gaza City, Central Gaza, and Khan Younis. “We selected the best clothes available in Gaza markets, to ensure that the families would be well protected against the cold weather, given the severe conditions they are living in tents and displacement centres, coupled with the lack of income for most of the families in Gaza,” stated Dr Nassar. He explained that the project was part of QRCS’s ongoing efforts to support the most vulnerable people and ease the increasing burdens on affected families, particularly children and older people. Ismail Mahmoud, 47, said: “I am so happy today for choosing warm clothes for my children. Seeing the smiles on their faces has given us some hope. Honestly, my only wish is that the economic situation would improve, and our children and the people of Gaza would find peace and stability in the future.” Worth $1.301mn, the project is part of QRCS’s humanitarian interventions to improve the living and humanitarian conditions of affected people in Gaza.
