Qatar public sector deposits rise 3.2% in June; banking assets steady at QR2.197tn

Qatar’s banking sector saw public sector deposits expand by 3.2% month-on-month (m-o-m) in June to support overall liquidity, even as broader total assets hold steady at QR2.197tn, according to QNB Group. The monthly gain in public sector funds brought year-to-date growth in the segment to 10.2%, data from the QNBFS Monthly Banking Sector Update for June 2026 showed. Government institutions, which account for roughly 58% of public sector deposits, expanded by 7.2% m-o-m and rose 20.0% compared to year-end 2025. Semi-government entities, representing about 15% of public sector deposits, grew 4.3% m-o-m to record an 18.2% expansion against late 2025. These gains helped offset a 5.1% monthly drop in the core government segment, which makes up 27% of public sector deposits and is down 9.4% against year-end 2025, according to the report. It also reported that the total Qatar banking sector deposits held steady month-on-month at QR1.105tn in June 2026, marking a 5.8% increase compared to late 2025. Private sector deposits slipped 0.9% over the month, though they remain up 4.1% compared with December 2025 levels. Corporate and institutional funds pulled the private sector down by receding 2.0% sequentially, maintaining a 2.7% gain relative to year-end 2025. Consumer deposits stayed flat m-o-m, preserving a 5.2% expansion since the start of the year, the report stated. Non-resident deposits dropped by 2.7% m-o-m during June, while remaining up 1.7% compared to year-end 2025. Non-resident deposits as a percentage of total deposits held flattish at 18.0% in June against 18.6% recorded at the end of 2025. The overall loan book was flat m-o-m at QR1.47tn, representing a 2.6% increase relative to late 2025. Solid performance from public sector credit and strong gains in foreign lending counterbalanced lower activity across the private segment. Total public sector loans moved up 0.9% sequentially over the month, though the segment remains down 5.1% against year-end 2025. Direct government credit, which accounts for around 40% of total public sector loans, was unchanged m-o-m and stands 15.0% above December 2025 figures, according to the report. Government institutions, accounting for roughly 50% of public sector borrowing, expanded 0.9% m-o-m in June, leaving the segment down 29.3% compared to year-end 2025. Semi-government entities, representing about 10% of public sector credit, added positive momentum by rising 2.4% m-o-m to post a 17.5% gain against late 2025. Private sector credit receded by 0.8% m-o-m in June, holding a modest 0.8% expansion against year-end 2025. A 27.2% contraction in industrial sector loans (-21.2% vs. December 2025) and a 2.5% decrease in real estate credit (-3.2% vs. December 2025) pulled private lending down, while all other segments were flat. Loans outside Qatar expanded by 3.6% during June 2026, marking a 56.0% surge compared to year-end 2025. The sector's overall loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) held steady m-o-m at 133% in June compared to 137% at the end of December 2025, the report stated. Under the Qatar Central Bank framework, which factors in stable sources of funding, the system's LDR sits comfortably below the official 100% regulatory threshold, according to the report. Asset quality indicators showed slight improvement as total loan provisions to gross loans eased to 3.8% m-o-m from 4.1% in May and 4.0% at year-end 2025. Total loan loss provisions fell by 6.8% over the month, standing 2.2% lower than year-end 2025 levels. Liquid assets relative to total assets stood at 30% in June, matching the 30% reported in May and December 2025 to reflect strong liquidity buffers across the sector, the report added.

The currency of consistency: Why trust is QNB’s most valuable brand asset

Strong brands are never built by individuals alone. They are shaped over time through a shared vision, consistent execution, and the collective efforts of people working towards a common purpose.Having spent nearly three decades at QNB, I have seen firsthand that reputation is not created through individual campaigns or moments of recognition. It is earned through sustained performance, meaningful relationships, and the trust that organisations build with customers, employees, investors, and communities over time.This perspective was reinforced when I was recognised among Forbes Middle East's Most Influential Marketing Leaders in the Middle East 2026. I viewed the recognition not as a personal achievement, but as a reflection of the teams and colleagues whose dedication contributes every day to strengthening the QNB brand and supporting the group's long-term success.Today, QNB is recognised as the most valuable banking brand in the Middle East and Africa, with a brand value exceeding $10.3bn, according to Brand Finance's Banking 500 report for 2026.The group's Brand Strength Index remained stable at 86, whilst QNB ranked among the world's 50 most valuable banking brands. While these milestones are important, they are ultimately the result of something deeper: Trust.Throughout my career at QNB, across treasury, retail banking, and communications, I have witnessed the group's evolution firsthand. During this time, I have seen that reputation is built not through individual campaigns, but through consistency, performance, and a long-term commitment to our customers and stakeholders.At QNB, communications supports the group's broader strategy, helping articulate a clear, consistent value proposition across markets whilst reinforcing the pillars that guide our growth: World capacity, innovation, and sustainability.Today, QNB operates in 28 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa, focusing strategically on key international financial centres, including London, Paris, Hong Kong, and Singapore, alongside growth opportunities in Saudi Arabia.As we strengthen our position as a globally connected financial institution, communications ensures that customers, investors, and stakeholders understand the value of an increasingly integrated international banking platform.One of our most significant milestones was the unification of our operations under a single QNB identity. Bringing together legacy brands was never simply a branding exercise; it was a strategic decision to boost collaboration and create a seamless customer experience.A key example is the recent unification of our brand in Egypt and Turkey, bringing major subsidiaries like QNB Alahli and QNB Finansbank under the single QNB name to enhance our global footprint.For me, this transformation represents far more than a new name or visual identity. It reflects QNB's evolution into an institution united by a common purpose and a consistent brand promise. Whether a customer engages with QNB in Doha, London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, or elsewhere across our network, they should experience the same standards, values, and commitment.Innovation is another defining pillar of QNB's growth. As customer expectations evolve, the group is investing in digital capabilities and new business models designed to deliver seamless, accessible banking.A key milestone was securing licences in Egypt and Saudi Arabia for ezbank, a fully digital, mobile-first, and AI-enabled banking platform. Initiatives like this demonstrate how we are reimagining customer experiences whilst expanding access to banking services in a digital-first world.Communicating this transformation effectively requires us to focus not just on the technology itself, but on the value it creates. Stakeholders want to understand how innovation improves experiences, supports businesses, and contributes to economic development. Our role is to translate complex initiatives into meaningful stories.Sustainability has also become central to the conversation. Today, stakeholders expect organisations to demonstrate not only financial performance, but also how they create long-term value for society.This commitment extends beyond finance. Through partnerships such as the recently announced QNB Education City Stadium, the group supports initiatives that contribute to social progress, inclusion, and community development.As a hub for community engagement and programmes that empower women through sport, the stadium demonstrates how organisations can create meaningful impact by expanding opportunities and supporting broader national development goals.At QNB, sustainability is integrated into our broader growth strategy. The group's sustainable financing portfolio has grown to more than $11bn, whilst milestones such as the independent assurance of financed emissions and the issuance of a €750mn Green Bond reflect our commitment to responsible, transparent growth.The group's continued international recognition, including being named Best Trade Finance Provider in Qatar 2026 by Global Finance, further highlights the importance of aligning business performance with a credible reputation.Looking ahead, the role of communications will continue to evolve alongside changes in technology, stakeholder expectations, and the global economy. Yet, the foundations remain remarkably consistent.People want transparency. They want authenticity. Above all, they want institutions they can trust.Building and maintaining that trust remains the central purpose of communications. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, effective communication helps organisations navigate change, strengthen reputation, and foster meaningful engagement with stakeholders.At QNB, it plays a critical role in ensuring that the Group’s leadership, performance, and long-term vision are clearly understood, creating lasting value that extends well beyond financial results.Heba al-Tamimi is senior executive vice-president: Group Communications, QNB Group.

The recognitions highlight QNB’s measurable success in customer-focused solutions and driving substantial digital adoption across the region.

QNB: Cyclical Factors Underpin US Dollar Resilience Despite Structural Headwinds

Qatar National Bank (QNB) said in its latest weekly economic commentary that while mounting structural headwinds continue to weigh on the US dollar's long-term outlook, cyclical factors remain the dominant drivers underpinning the currency's resilience against most major peers.The report noted that in recent years the US dollar has faced mounting pressure from structural headwinds, including an overvalued real exchange rate, persistent fiscal and trade deficits, and the gradual diversification of international reserves by central banks. These trends, it said, have prompted growing debate over the sustainability of the dollar's long-term strength.In spite of this, the report said, the US dollar has remained resilient against most major currencies. This resilience reflects the continued strength of cyclical factors, which have helped offset longer-term structural pressures.According to QNB, although structural factors are likely to shape the US dollar's trajectory over the longer term, exchange rates are primarily driven by cyclical forces over shorter horizons. In particular, interest rate differentials have traditionally been the single most important cyclical driver of the currency, influencing global capital flows and portfolio allocation.The commentary added that the resilience of the US economy and the AI-driven investment boom have provided additional support to the currency by reinforcing foreign demand for US financial assets. It identified three key factors that continue to underpin the currency's strength despite mounting structural headwinds.First, the report said, interest rate differentials continue to provide support for the US dollar. Exchange rates are strongly influenced by the relative return investors can earn on financial assets across countries, making monetary policy a key driver of currency movements. When US interest rates rise relative to those in other advanced economies, dollar-denominated assets become more attractive, increasing demand for the currency. Consequently, periods of higher US interest rates have historically been associated with a stronger US dollar.The report noted that recent shifts in the US Federal Reserve's policy stance have reinforced the role of interest rate differentials in supporting the US dollar. At the beginning of the year, financial markets anticipate the Federal Reserve to reduce interest rates by around 50 basis points during 2026. However, persistent inflationary pressures, resilient economic activity, and the Federal Reserve's shift towards a more hawkish stance under Chair Kevin Warsh have led to a significant reassessment of the policy outlook.Financial markets now expect policy rates to remain higher for longer and assign a meaningful probability to additional rate hikes, according to QNB. As a result, US policy rates would remain well above those in other major advanced economies, with the Federal Funds target range at 3.50-3.75%, compared with the ECB's deposit facility rate at 2.25% and the Bank of Japan's policy rate at 1.00%. These wide interest rate differentials, the report said, are expected to remain an important source of strength for the US dollar.  Second, QNB said, AI and technology-driven stock market performance continues to reinforce foreign demand for US financial assets. The expanding adoption of AI has triggered a massive wave of investment in digital infrastructure, including semiconductors, data centers, cloud computing, and electricity networks.As the global leader in AI innovation, the United States has attracted a disproportionate share of this investment, supporting strong corporate earnings, and continued equity market outperformance. According to the report, these developments have enhanced the attractiveness of US financial assets, encouraging foreign capital inflows and providing an additional source of strength for the US dollar.Third, the report said, US economic growth continues to outperform other advanced economies, reinforcing the US dollar. While growth has moderated from the exceptionally strong pace recorded in recent years, activity indicators continue to point to stronger economic momentum than in other major advanced economies. In particular, the US composite PMI has remained comfortably above the 50-point expansion threshold, signaling growth in both services and manufacturing, while the Euro Area composite PMI has hovered close or below the stagnation threshold. In addition to boosting demand for US financial assets, the AI investment boom is also benefiting the real economy through record capital expenditure. Over time, these investments are expected to support productivity growth and strengthen the US economy's long-term growth potential.In conclusion, QNB said that while mounting structural headwinds continue to point to a gradual US dollar depreciation over the longer term, cyclical factors are set to remain the dominant drivers of the currency in the near term. Higher US interest rates, sustained foreign demand for US financial assets, and continued US economic outperformance are expected to remain important sources of strength for the US dollar.

QSE continues to retain fundamental support factors

The Qatar Stock Exchange (QSE) index closed the current trading week down 1.18%, losing 120.59 points from the previous week's close to finish at 10,090 points, weighed down by declines in six sectors. The industrial sector posted the biggest losses during the week, falling 2.38%, followed by the real estate sector, which declined 1.2%. The insurance sector was the only sector to record a positive performance, edging up 0.08%. In remarks to Qatar News Agency (QNA), financial market analyst Youssef Bouhlaiqa said the Qatari market continues to retain fundamental support factors that enhance its ability to overcome current volatility despite the continued cautious sentiment prevailing across regional financial markets. He said the half-year financial results announced so far, led by QNB Group and Dukhan Bank, have been positive, reflecting the strength of the banking sector, although those results have not yet enabled the benchmark index to move above the 10,300-point level. Bouhlaiqa attributed the recent decline in the benchmark index, which exceeded 120 points, primarily to external factors rather than the fundamentals of the domestic economy, adding that this could create opportunities for selective investment in blue-chip stocks as uncertainty eases. He stressed that despite current challenges, the Qatari market continues to benefit from several factors supporting its medium-term performance, most notably the strong financial positions of listed companies, continued robust dividend distributions, high liquidity levels in the banking sector, the resilience of the Qatari economy, and continued spending on development projects. Bouhlaiqa said the market's performance in the coming period is likely to remain tied to geopolitical developments, as well as the financial results of the remaining companies. However, he said the continued strong financial performance of leading companies could gradually restore investor confidence and support the index's return to an upward trajectory once external pressures subside.

QNB Group's total assets for H1 2026 reached QR1,438bn, an increase of 6% y-o-y, mainly driven by growth in loans and advances by 8% to reach QR1,042bn.
