Manchester United inflicted Arsenal’s first home defeat of the season in a 3-2 thriller to blow the Premier League title race open Sunday as Aston Villa beat Newcastle to close within four points of the Gunners. Villa’s impressive 2-0 victory at Newcastle took Unai Emery’s men level on points with Manchester City, whose own title chances were boosted by events at the Emirates Stadium. A week on from dominating City in the Manchester derby, Michael Carrick’s dream start as United boss continued thanks to Matheus Cunha’s stunning later winner. A Lisandro Martinez own goal put Arsenal in front but the Red Devils quickly levelled when Bryan Mbeumo pounced on an error by Martin Zubimendi. Patrick Dorgu’s brilliant strike put the visitors in front early in the second half. Not for the first time this season, despite their lofty league position, Arsenal were blunt as an attacking force from open play. But they could rely on their prowess from set-pieces to equalise when Mikel Merino forced in a corner on 84 minutes. Just moments later Cunha took aim from outside the box and delivered a telling blow to the Gunners’ hopes of a first league title in 22 years. Victory also propelled United into the top four to boost their chances of Champions League football next season for the first time in three years. Villa kept their outside shot at a first league title since 1981 alive with their first victory at St. James’ Park for 21 years. Emiliano Buendia’s brilliant strike from outside the box opened the scoring before Ollie Watkins secured victory when the England international headed in Lucas Digne’s cross two minutes from time. Newcastle slip to ninth but still only four points outside the top five, which will likely be enough for a place in the Champions League. Chelsea piled more pain on Crystal Palace with a 3-1 win at Selhurst Park. Oliver Glasner promised to do his best to turn around a miserable run for the Eagles despite announcing he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season. The Austrian was furious at the manner club captain Marc Guehi was allowed to depart for Manchester City earlier this week and could also lose star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta before the transfer window closes. Palace never recovered after a wayward back-pass from Jaydee Canvot freed Estevao to sprint clear and fire in Chelsea’s opener on 34 minutes. The Brazilian then set up compatriot Joao Pedro to gallop in behind the Palace defence and double the Blues’ advantage just after half-time. Enzo Fernandez’s penalty rounded off a fourth win in five games for Liam Rosenior since he took charge at Stamford Bridge. After 11 games without a win, the Eagles are now looking over their shoulder, just eight points above the relegation zone. Nottingham Forest gave their survival chances a huge boost by inflicting just a second home defeat of the season on Brentford. Forest moved five points clear of the drop zone with a 2-0 win in west London thanks to goals from Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi. 

Top of both the Premier League and Champions League and still in both domestic cup competitions, Arsenal fans should be relishing what could yet turn out to be the greatest season in the Gunners’ history. But a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United has reopened the debate over whether Mikel Arteta’s side can shrug off their tag of nearly men to deliver a first league title in 22 years. Arsenal still hold a four-point lead over an inconsistent Manchester City and surprise-packages Aston Villa at the top of the table with 15 games to go. Already assured of progression to the Champions League last 16, Arteta’s men are also well placed to reach the League Cup final and have a favourable home draw against third-tier Wigan in the FA Cup fourth round. But legendary former captain Patrick Vieira questioned the mental strength of the current Arsenal crop after a tentative display against United to lose at home for the first time this season. They have finished second for the past three Premier League seasons and have not won any major trophy since Arteta’s debut season six years ago. “There are still questions about the mental strength of the team,” Vieira said. “They need to understand when they are on the pitch they have to play with more energy and more risks. They have the quality.” As City and Villa have stumbled in recent weeks, Arsenal have wasted the chance to turn the title race into a something of a procession. After back-to-back goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, Arsenal conceded three goals for the first time in nearly three years as a rejuvenated United won at the Emirates for the first time since 2019. “We have to show the mental strength that we have on the pitch when it comes to matchday,” said Arteta when questioned about his side’s doubters. “We lost a game... It’s how we react to that and I am very convinced because I know those players in that dressing room and how much we want it that we’re going to react immediately.” Despite their lofty position, a lack of invention in the final third is not a new problem for Arteta to solve. No Arsenal player has scored more than five league goals this season, a quarter of the tally of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. A Lisandro Martinez own goal and Mikel Merino’s finish from a corner means more than half of Arsenal’s Premier League goals have come either from opposition players or set-pieces. The signing of Viktor Gyokeres has failed to end Arteta’s quest for a prolific number nine, while star winger Bukayo Saka has gone off the boil with no goals in his last 13 games. However, Arsenal remain very much in the box seat for a first title since Vieira’s side went a full league season unbeaten in 2003/04, thanks in part to the unreliability of their rivals. City won for the first time in five league games in 2026 against bottom-of-the-table Wolves on Saturday. But Pep Guardiola’s men travel to Tottenham and Liverpool in their next two league games – two stadiums where they have rarely succeeded even during a glorious era. Villa’s first title since 1980/81 would be an even bigger shock as they continue to punch above their weight under Unai Emery. “The journey’s not always going to be smooth, there’s going to be ups and downs,” said Saka. “It’s up to us to show our character next week.” If Arsenal can restore order, the title remains theirs for the taking. 

Michael Carrick made a flying start to life as Manchester United boss against Manchester City but Premier League leaders Arsenal missed a chance to pull nine points clear.Sorry Tottenham slipped to defeat against relegation-threatened West Ham, further increasing the pressure on beleaguered boss Thomas Frank, while Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Burnley. Carrick's first game of his second temporary spell in charge of the Red Devils could barely have gone better in a dominant 2-0 win at Old Trafford.The former United midfielder was appointed as head coach until the end of the campaign following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month. The 44-year-old, who was also briefly United's caretaker boss in 2021, said ahead of his first game that there was still "magic" at United, and his team put on a memorable show.Second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu capped an energetic and incisive display by United, who could have won by a far more comfortable margin. "Great start. No getting away from that," said Carrick. "The boys were fantastic. Consistency is the key to any success," he added. "If you could find that, then you're onto a winner."Guardiola admitted that his team – winless in four league games this year – were outplayed by Carrick's inspired United. "The better team won," said the City boss. "We weren't at the level required to win this game."Arsenal are seven points clear at the top despite being held to a 0-0 draw for the second league game in a row at Nottingham Forest. A frustrated Arteta, chasing a first Premier League title for the Gunners since 2004, felt that his side should have been awarded a penalty, believing Ola Aina had handled the ball."We created four big, big, big chances and a clear penalty, but we weren't able to win the game," said the Spaniard. "I've just seen the replays. I think it's a clear intention to clear the ball inside and it's a clear penalty so I don't understand why it's not been given."Third-placed Aston Villa can close to within four points of Arsenal if they beat Everton today.The mood at Tottenham darkened further after Spurs slipped to a 2-1 defeat against West Ham, who had not won a Premier League match since early November. Spurs fans turned on Frank and chanted "you're getting sacked in the morning" after Callum Wilson struck a stoppage-time winner.Spurs, 14th in the table, have won just two home league games this season, leaving Frank, in his first campaign in charge, under enormous pressure. "It's tough to take, it hurts a lot," the Spurs boss told Sky Sports. "The boys put everything in, and that's a sign of a squad that is fighting, doing everything they can to try and win."Nuno Espirito Santo's West Ham finished the day five points behind Forest, who are just above the relegation zone. Defending champions Liverpool are now unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions but dropped two valuable points against struggling Burnley at Anfield.Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz scored his third league goal since his arrival but the visitors drew level in the 65th minute when Marcus Edwards placed his shot beyond the reach of Alisson Becker. "It feels like a defeat," said Wirtz. "When we had so many shots and so many on target, I think we had to score more goals. "But some days are like this -- you try everything but in the end it doesn't go in the goal."Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior, who replaced the departed Enzo Maresca earlier this month, watched as his side saw off high-flying London rivals Brentford 2-0. Joao Pedro gave the Blues the lead in the first half and Cole Palmer doubled the advantage from the spot in the 76th minute. Sunderland beat Crystal Palace 2-1 while Leeds scored late on to beat Fulham 1-0, remaining eight points clear of the relegation zone. 

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said the Premier League leaders must win trophies if they were to be remembered like the “Invincibles” side that last won the title for the Gunners in 2004.Arsene Wenger’s side romped to the title 22 years ago without losing a single league game. Arsenal head into Thursday’s clash at home to reigning champions Liverpool with a six-point lead at the top of the table, although Manchester City and Aston Villa can cut that gap as they were in action late last night. Arteta’s men, runners-up for the past three seasons, have two more points and four more goals than Wenger’s ‘Invincibles’ managed after 20 games. But the Spaniard said those stats matter little unless Arsenal go on to win the league. “No because ‘the Invincibles’ won a lot,” Arteta told his pre-match press conference on whether his side can be considered better than Arsenal’s last title winners. “They won consistently, and they created a history and a legacy, and we have to do that.” The lone major piece of silverware won by Arsenal in six years under Arteta remains the 2020 FA Cup “There are a lot of stats, but in the last two or three years we have managed more points and more goals than ever before. But at the end, we have to translate that to major trophies,” he added. “Probably doing what we are doing now would have been enough (in 2004), but now it’s not, and we have to make the margins even bigger.” Arsenal lost 1-0 to Liverpool at Anfield back in August in what was billed as an early showdown between title rivals. The defending champions head to the Emirates 14 points off the top after a difficult second season for Arne Slot, but Arteta insisted the Reds remain “a superb side”. The Gunners remain without sidelined defenders Riccardo Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera but are “monitoring the load” on Kai Havertz as the Germany forward intensifies his training while continuing to recover from a long-term leg injury. Arteta, meanwhile, said he was “sad” to see rival boss Ruben Amorim sacked by Manchester United on Monday after just 14 months in charge at Old Trafford. The Portuguese coach’s exit followed growing tensions with senior United officials, including director of football Jason Wilcox, over recent days. United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe had previously suggested Amorim would be given at least three years in charge, citing Arsenal’s patience with Arteta as an example to follow. Appointed in 2019, Arteta endured a rocky start to his time in charge of Arsenal. But they are now a commanding 17 points ahead of sixth-placed United, who won just 25 of 63 games in all competitions under Amorim. “I can only talk about what I have experienced and it’s always sad to see a colleague losing his job, obviously,” said Arteta. “We know where we are and I think you need support from the ownership, from your staff, from players. At the end of the day, you need to win a lot of football matches if you want to stay in the job, and that’s the reality and the nature of our job.” 

Liverpool manager Arne Slot insists his reigning English champions can still do “special things” this season as they prepare to face Premier League leaders Arsenal following a faltering start to their title defence. Slot’s men head to the Emirates for Thursday’s clash in fourth place in the table, but 14 points adrift of the Gunners. However, following on from a run of nine defeats in 12 games in all competitions, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last nine – although that sequence includes four draws. Those draws include a goalless stalemate against Leeds and a 2-2 share of the spoils with Fulham in their first two Premier League fixtures of 2026. “It is nine games unbeaten but we have definitely had two draws too many,” Slot said. Slot, who guided Liverpool to an impressive title triumph in his first season in charge at Anfield after succeeding Jurgen Klopp, added: “Where are we? I think I’ve said so many times that the answer to that question is we aren’t where we want to be, but I feel we have a very talented squad. If everyone’s available and ready, then I think we can do special things.” They certainly gave that impression earlier in the season when Liverpool beat Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield in August. However, a crisis up front, in terms of personnel, casts doubt over their achieving the double over the Gunners. Hugo Ekitike is a major doubt after missing the Fulham draw because of a hamstring problem. The Reds are also without Alexander Isak through injury, while Mohamed Salah remains at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt. Slot said he hoped his side would become more consistent. “We haven’t had the consistency but we’ve already beaten some very good teams, so that tells you the talent is definitely there but the consistency isn’t,” he said. They have recorded some notable victories, home successes against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid and a 5-1 romp away to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League. But on the flip side, Liverpool have suffered three-goal defeats at home three times this season, against Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and PSV Eindhoven. “This club has shown so many times that when they don’t have the greatest form in the league, they are still able to win other trophies,” said Slot. “We just haven’t had consistency against the clubs where we would usually win which adds to the fact that we are now 14 points behind Arsenal.” They now face a renewed test of their form against the Gunners, with Arsenal bidding to be crowned champions of England for the first time in more than 20 years. “There’s a lot of importance on this match because we still have a lot to play for in the Premier League,” said Slot. “We are also in the FA Cup and the Champions League, which are knockout games and games where you face teams like Arsenal, so it will be a chance for us to see where we are in a one-off game. We are going up against a very, very good Arsenal team.” The Dutchman said the daunting things for his side is Arsenal are the “complete package”. “For that reason, in my opinion, they deserve to be on top this season.” 

Bangladesh will not play their Twenty20 World Cup matches in India after Mustafizur Rahman was released by his Indian Premier League team amid growing tensions between the countries, Bangladesh’s ‌cricket board (BCB) said Sunday. Kolkata Knight Riders said on Saturday ‌they had released the Bangladesh ‍bowler after being told to do so by India’s cricket board (BCCI). Bangladesh are scheduled to play three Twenty20 World Cup matches in Kolkata next month, with the February 7-March 8 tournament being co-hosted by India ‍and Sri Lanka, but the BCB said they are worried about their players’ safety. “Following a thorough assessment of the prevailing situation and the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India and considering the advice from the Bangladesh government, the Board of Directors resolved that the Bangladesh national team will not travel to India for the tournament ‌under the current conditions,” the BCB said. “In light of this decision, the BCB has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC), as the event authority, to consider relocating all of ‍Bangladesh’s matches to a venue outside India.” Earlier ‌Sunday Ministry of Sports said Bangladesh would not travel to India. “We welcome this decision taken in the context of the extreme communal policy of India’s cricket board,” said Nazrul, who added that he had instructed the board to request Bangladesh’s World Cup games be held in Sri Lanka. Last month, hundreds protested near Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi after Hindu factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was beaten and set on fire in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district by a crowd that accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A total ​of 12 people were arrested ‌in connection with his death. WORSENED RELATIONSThe incident worsened relations between India and its neighbour, with ties already strained after Bangladesh’s ‍former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to New Delhi following protests against her. After Mustafizur’s release on Saturday, the BCB had held an emergency meeting before writing to the ICC to relocate their matches. “The board said that where a Bangladesh cricketer can’t play in India despite being contracted, the entire Bangladesh cricket team can’t feel ​safe to go to the World Cup,” Nazrul had said. Last year, the ICC allowed India to play Champions Trophy matches in the United Arab Emirates due to soured relations with hosts Pakistan. Sunday, cricket news site Cricbuzz reported that the BCB would ask the BCCI for a formal explanation regarding Mustafizur’s release. The ICC did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Bangladesh are due to play West Indies, England and Italy in Kolkata before ending the group stage against Nepal in Mumbai. 

Aston Villa stepped up their unexpected Premier League title challenge as Morgan Rogers' brilliant brace sealed a 2-1 win against Manchester United Sunday.Unai Emery's side took the lead through Rogers' stunning strike late in the first half at Villa Park.Matheus Cunha levelled for United moments later but Rogers bagged his sixth goal in his last six league appearances after the interval to clinch Villa's 10th successive victory in all competitions.Unai Emery's third-placed side are just three points adrift of leaders Arsenal and one behind second-placed Manchester City as they chase a first English title since 1981.Villa are on their best winning run in all competitions since 1914, when they secured 11 successive victories.They have won seven consecutive top-flight matches for the first time since 1989-90, when they finished second under Graham Taylor.Villa's ascent into the title race is even more remarkable as it comes after their worst start to a league campaign for 28 years, featuring just two points and one goal scored in their opening five matches.Emery has turned Villa Park into a fortress, with just one Premier League home defeat in 2025, fewer than any other team.Arsenal have already lost there this season and even United, beaten just once in their previous 26 trips to Villa, were unable to derail Emery's title charge.Seventh-placed United's second defeat in their last 11 league matches left them winless in their last two games after the 4-4 draw with Bournemouth on Monday.Adding to Ruben Amorim's problems, United captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off at half-time with an apparent hamstring issue.Fernandes' injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Amorim, who was without seven players against Villa.Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Kobbie Mainoo were injured, Casemiro was suspended, while Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui are at the Africa Cup of Nations.Fernandes recently claimed United "wanted me to go" when Al-Hilal made a bid for him in the summer.Emery delightThe Portugal midfielder rejected the switch to Saudi Arabia, but United will experience what life without their influential skipper is like if Fernandes is sidelined for a prolonged spell.Benjamin Sesko should have put United in front after racing into the Villa area, but he hesitated, allowing Emiliano Martinez time to dash off his line and block the Slovenian's shot.Villa took the lead with a perfectly crafted counter-attack in the 45th minute.John McGinn's pin-point pass sent Rogers surging away down the left flank and the England midfielder glided past Leny Yoro to curl a brilliant finish into the far corner from just inside the area.Matty Cash gifted United their equaliser on the stroke of half-time, the defender dawdling in possession as Patrick Dorgu pounced to tee up Cunha for a clinical finish from an acute angle.Losing Fernandes for the second half was a hammer blow and the irrepressible Rogers restored Villa's advantage in the 57th minute.Showing more desire than Yoro, Rogers pounced on a loose ball in the United area and guided a predatory finish past Senne Lammens from 12 yards.Emery revelled in the moment, roaring in delight as he threw his jacket in the air in celebration.The Spaniard's joy was nearly curtailed immediately, but Martinez saved from Diogo Dalot and Dorgu to preserve Villa's lead.Cunha squandered an even better chance, heading wide from Dorgu's cross.Amorim sent on Jack Fletcher, the son of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, for his debut, but the teenager's first game was destined to end in defeat. 

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes told Portuguese media the Premier League club had wanted to sell him this summer after receiving interest from Saudi Arabia.But the 31-year-old claimed manager Ruben Amorim still had him in his plans and that convinced him to stay at Old Trafford."My passion and empathy for the club were the same, but there comes a point where money becomes more important to them than you," Fernandes told Canal 11, a channel owned by the Portuguese Football Federation, on Monday."The club wanted me to leave. I said it to the directors and I think they didn't have the courage to make that decision because the coach wanted me."But if I had said I wanted to leave, even if the coach wanted me to stay, the club would have let me go."Fernandes, who has 103 goals in 307 appearances for Man Utd in all competitions since arriving in 2020, was also reportedly hurt by the club hierarchy's willingness to part ways with him."The feeling I got from the club was, 'if you leave, it's not so bad for us'. That hurt me a little," he said, according to comments reported on the website of Portuguese sports daily A Bola.The playmaker said he had considered a move to Saudi Arabia, following in the footsteps of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo who made the move to the kingdom in 2023 after his acrimonious departure from Old Trafford. 

Mohamed Salah reported for Liverpool training Tuesday as doubts grow about the star’s future at the Premier League champions with Saudi clubs intent on making a move for the striker in the winter transfer window. The 33-year-old Egypt forward was left out of Liverpool’s squad for their Champions League tie at Inter Milan following his extraordinary public criticism of Reds manager Arne Slot after he was left on the bench for the third consecutive game. Salah said after the 3-3 draw with Leeds on Sunday that he felt like he had been “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool and no longer had a relationship with Slot, sparking reports that Liverpool’s third-highest goalscorer in history could be on his way out of Anfield in January despite signing a lucrative new contract in April. He posted a picture of himself training alone in Liverpool’s weights room Tuesday. Salah’s outburst has piqued interest in Saudi Arabia with a source at the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) saying it will do “whatever it can” to buy him. “We follow Salah’s position thoroughly and believe there can be a move either by loan or buying his contract,” the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Asked at a pre-match press conference in Milan on Monday whether Salah, who has scored 250 times for Liverpool since signing from Roma in 2017, had played his last game for the Reds, Slot replied: “I have no clue.” “He has every right to feel what he feels, but he doesn’t have the right to share it with the media,” Slot added. The Saudi source said there were “no direct negotiations or talks with the club at the moment but there will be a move at the right moment”. The PIF source said the Gulf monarchy wanted to sign the Egyptian winger in January to join stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League. PIF holds a 75 percent share in Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad, but the source said it was not alone in wanting the Arab world’s biggest football star. “There is a competition inside the Saudi league who will bring Salah,” the source said, adding that the Al Qadsiah club backed by Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil and gas company Aramco was also keen. Ronaldo plays for Al Nassr, Salah’s former Liverpool teammate Darwin Nunez is at Al-Hillal, another former Premier League player of the season N’Golo Kante is at Al-Ittihad, but Salah is the biggest star from an Arab country along with Paris Saint-Germain’s Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi. Salah, who was not even used as a substitute at Elland Road, is set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations after next weekend’s home Premier League match against Brighton. He said he was “very, very disappointed” to have again been named among the substitutes at Leeds, adding: “I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I am on the bench for three games so I can’t say they keep the promise. I said many times before that, I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden we don’t have any relationship. I don’t know why but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn’t want me in the club.” Salah made his explosive comments in the midst of a dismal season for both him and Liverpool. He has played a key role in Liverpool’s two Premier League titles and one Champions League triumph during his iconic spell on Merseyside. But he has been a shadow of his former self during Liverpool’s struggles this season – the title-holders are 10th in the Premier League – with just four goals in 13 top-flight appearances. “All players have their ups and downs. Salah is just 33 and has a lot to do here,” insisted the PIF source. “Salah is a beloved footballer around the globe and will have a massive impact on the Saudi League both on and off the pitch.”
