Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique hailed his Ballon d'Or winning forward Ousmane Dembele for a "marvellous" performance as the French club began their bid to claim a third straight Champions League title with a big victory on Wednesday. "That was the Ousmane that we all know and that we have seen over the last three years, and when you see the ability he has to create and to press, to help the team, it is a real pleasure," PSG's Spanish coach said after Dembele scored the first two goals in PSG's 6-1 thrashing of Slovan Bratislava. Prior to this Dembele had been used sparingly in PSG's matches so far this season as he builds up his fitness again after the World Cup. "He played really well. He will build up his fitness gradually but it is marvellous to see a player like that," Luis Enrique added. Dembele also set up two goals for Ferran Torres, who netted a hat-trick on his European debut for PSG. Fabian Ruiz got the home team's other goal. PSG ran out easy winners despite Luis Enrique leaving both Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue, two of his other key attacking performers, on the bench. "Kvara and Doue are incredible players. For me Kvara could win the Ballon d'Or, as could Dembele and others," said the coach, with 10 PSG stars listed among the 30 nominees to win the most prestigious individual award in the game. Luis Enrique was also full of praise for his opposite number Yaya Toure, who is in charge of Slovan this season, despite the heavy defeat for the away side. "It is difficult to play away to the team that has been champions in the last two years but I love the way they try to play," he said. "Today was not the best day for them because we showed it can be very difficult to play against us when we press at that level. It is difficult for any opponent, but he has the quality to be a great manager." The former Ivory Coast, Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder is the first African to coach a team in Europe's elite club competition. After leading them through three qualifying rounds to get to the league phase, Toure acknowledged that it was impossible to compete with the defending champions. "For me Paris are going to be close to winning the trophy again, and my players gave their best but it wasn't easy. They are exceptional," said Toure, who was appointed by the Slovak side during the close season. "I can't put four men on Dembele. I want my team to play too, and they did all they could. "I was disappointed today because Ousmane hasn't looked at his best in the last few games but tonight he was at 200 percent," he joked. "I have been working with these players for just a few months and now they understand how good the very best teams are. There is a considerable gap between the sides but this will help us to grow and get better."

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique insisted that the sale of France winger Bradley Barcola to Liverpool was a good deal for all parties, as the reigning European champions get ready to defend their Champions League title without one of their key players from the last two campaigns."Everyone is a winner," the Spaniard told reporters on the eve of his team's Ligue 1 clash at home to Monaco today. "He wanted to leave because he wanted to have more importance in the team. And that is something that you have to earn in training. I can't guarantee that to any player. He has been a very important player for us, and he is an incredible person. He was liked by his teammates. He still had two years left on his contract but he decided to leave and I wish him all the best. We have to accept it."Barcola, who appeared in all of France's matches at the World Cup, had not featured at all for PSG at the start of this season before joining Liverpool in a blockbuster deal for a fee of 125mn euros (£107mn, $145mn) plus 20mn euros in bonuses.The 24-year-old scored 13 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions last season for PSG as they retained the Champions League and Ligue 1 titles. However, he was not automatically assured of his place in Luis Enrique's starting line-up, especially with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia competing to play in the same position on the wing.PSG have brought in three new attacking players for a combined fee of around 150mn euros, with Spain World Cup final hero Ferran Torres arriving from Barcelona while Maghnes Akliouche was signed from Monaco and Mika Godts from Ajax."I am happy with the three players we have brought in up front. We must not make comparisons. We will see what happens but I am happy with the transfer window," said Enrique, who also saw PSG sell Portugal striker Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan and Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye to Aston Villa.The former Barcelona and Spain coach insisted his new players would need "time to adapt" as PSG come into the match against Monaco having drawn their first two Ligue 1 games of the campaign with Rennes and Lille.They also lost to Lens in the French Champions Trophy having previously beaten Aston Villa to win the UEFA Super Cup. The Parisians start their bid to win a third straight Champions League title at home to Slovan Bratislava next Wednesday."Our objectives are clear. I have said it many times. I want to win the most important trophies and there is none bigger than the Champions League," added the coach, who is beginning his fourth season at the helm. 

France winger Bradley Barcola has become Liverpool's second-most expensive signing after joining the Premier League giants from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday. A source close to PSG told AFP that Barcola's transfer is worth "125mn euros (£107mn, $145mn) plus 20 million euros in easily achievable bonuses".The total fee of £124 million is second only to the £125 million Liverpool paid Newcastle for Sweden star Alexander Isak.Barcola's fee is the highest ever paid for a Ligue 1 player. It is also the 10th £100mn-plus transfer in Premier League history and the fourth such deal completed this summer.The 23-year-old is the third forward costing over £100mn that Liverpool have signed in two years. Isak arrived at Anfield last year and Liverpool also paid around £100mn to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Neither player has yet lived up to the hefty price tag, although Isak missed much of last season due to injury.Barcola, who signed what Liverpool said was a "long-term deal", had yet to play for PSG this season amid the transfer speculation. "It's a great pride to be able to play for Liverpool. I'm very happy," he told his new club's website on Monday."It took a long time but I'm really happy today to be able to play for Liverpool and all I want is to be on the pitch and be able to play. I hope to achieve very big things. First of all, winning the Premier League - it's one of my biggest dreams in my life. It is to do that and to stay in this team in the long term - that's why I signed a long contract - and I hope I can do it."Barcola, a member of the PSG squad which won back-to-back Champions League titles in the past two seasons, has long been a Liverpool target. He scored 39 goals in 152 appearances and won three successive Ligue 1 titles during his time in the French capital after joining PSG from domestic rivals Lyon in a £38.6mn deal in 2023.Barcola also scored three goals for France during their run to the semi-finals at the recent World Cup. Rebuilding the attackLiverpool have been looking to strengthen in wide areas since the departure of Mohamed Salah at the end of last season. Luis Diaz's departure the season before left Liverpool's forwards without service from the wings. They have already signed Spain World Cup-winning winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna in the current transfer window and he has made a bright start, scoring the equaliser in Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, which followed the same scoreline in their Premier League opener at Newcastle on August 23.Barcola is expected to play on the left wing, with Cody Gakpo pushed down the pecking order and linked with a move to Manchester City. Barcola's arrival at Anfield sees him reunited with former PSG team-mate and current fellow France international Hugo Ekitike, who is recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon. "I don't know Jeremy (Jacquet), but I was able to talk to Hugo, who I met in the French team and in my old club," said Barcola. "He was waiting for me to sign the contract, sending me messages often asking me if I was coming or not."I can't wait to get back together and be able to play with him. I already said (told him) that it is done." Barcola was not always first-choice at PSG, with Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue providing stiff competition for places, but he still played a key part in their Champions League triumphs. 

Captain Marquinhos headed in a dramatic last-gasp equaliser as Paris Saint-Germain scored twice in stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw at Lille in Ligue 1 on Friday. It looked as though the reigning French and European champions were heading for defeat as goals by Hakon Haraldsson and Dilane Bakwa for Lille left PSG trailing 2-0 with the 90 minutes up.But a Vitinha strike in the first added minute gave Luis Enrique's team sudden belief. The Portugal playmaker then crossed for Marquinhos to head in with the final act of the game in northern France. It was a cruel blow for Lille and their new coach Davide Ancelotti, who worked with Marquinhos as part of the Brazil staff at the recent World Cup."It is never finished against PSG," said Marquinhos. PSG remain without a victory at the start of this Ligue 1 season but this was the second successive game in which they had come from two behind late on to grab a share of the spoils.Last weekend they trailed 2-0 away to Rennes before Spain's World Cup final hero Ferran Torres came off the bench and netted a brace to earn a point. "It says a lot about us," added Marquinhos. "The positive thing is our mentality, and our ability to come back and get a result from behind. That augurs well for the rest of the season." Dembele left outTorres, a new arrival from Barcelona, had replaced Ousmane Dembele at half-time in Rennes, and the French international was then told by his manager to go away and have this week off. He was therefore not involved here, while another of France's World Cup stars Bradley Barcola was also absent with a huge-money transfer to Liverpool understood to be imminent.Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was also benched at kick-off for the visitors, who saw Achraf Hakimi come close to giving them an early lead with an effort which grazed the post. Haraldsson then struck in stunning fashion just before the midway point in the first half for Lille, who this week sold prodigious teenage talent Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester City for an initial 100mn euros ($117m).The Icelandic international midfielder scored with a thumping first-time effort from the edge of the area after a brilliant reverse pass by Olivier Giroud to set him up. Kvaratskhelia and summer recruit Mika Godts both came on in the second half for PSG, but they were reeling when Bakwa - just on for his debut after joining on loan from Nottingham Forest - curled in for 2-0 with six minutes left.It seemed set to be two wins out of two for Lille under new Italian coach, whose father Carlo Ancelotti - the current Brazil boss - watched from the stands at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Davide Ancelotti was on the staff at PSG when Carlo was in charge of the Qatar-owned club between 2012 and 2013. But PSG's late show denied them, and Luis Enrique's side will take confidence from their remarkable comeback here as they prepare for the upcoming defence of their Champions League title."At this point in the season it would be very dangerous to be at 100 percent already," said the coach. The two-time reigning European champions, who have already beaten Aston Villa to claim this season's UEFA Super Cup, will notably play Barcelona and Manchester City in the league phase of the Champions League. Elsewhere in Ligue 1 this weekend, last season's runners-up Lens go to Strasbourg on Saturday, while Monaco face Marseille on Sunday.

Paris Saint-Germain players can ill afford to cruise through the season as coach Luis Enrique warned he expected them to play out of their comfort zone. The PSG coach took off both Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia at halftime of their opening game of the new Ligue 1 season, bringing on Mika Godts and Ferran Torres, who scored twice to salvage a point at Stade Rennais on Sunday. "Football is like that. Paris Saint-Germain have won nothing, nothing," he said of the new season where they defend not only their Ligue 1 title but chase a third successive Champions League victory. "If you think about what you've won, you're not going to win anything! There is no credit. You have to show every day, every match, every training session, that you're ready. Otherwise, it's easy to relax and start slipping. I wasn't brought up that way. We are always looking to win, and to keep winning, you have to step outside your comfort zone. Is that clear?" PSG, who won the European Super Cup this month but lost the French version to Racing Lens, played a sluggish first half at Rennes and were 2-0 down at the break after Sebastian Szymanski and Esteban Lepaul scored at Roazhon Park. But new Spanish signing Ferran Torres, who netted the winner in last month's World Cup final, came on for Dembele and scored twice to ensure a point for the Parisians. "He wasn't bad, was he? He scored two goals, but I'm happy with everyone who came on in a very difficult match because we had a lot of trouble controlling Rennes in the first half," Enrique said. "They were good on the counterattack and scored two wonderful goals. It was complicated, but it's important for me to see that so many players are ready. We sign players to go on a long journey with them. It's very positive for him and we're very happy," he said of Ferran Torres' debut. "We're always looking to find the best players for every match. Places in the team will be more difficult to get than last year, and that's our ambition. I think we had a very good transfer window, and we're still open to different possibilities. Everyone knows how difficult it is for a team to keep winning. And clearly, we still need to improve." Meanwhile, Torres said: "The game was difficult, we knew it would be. I just put my hand up then with Fabian's quality, you just have to run and he puts the ball in the right place," he added. Luis Enrique named two of his big summer signings in 26-year-old Torres and France winger Maghnes Akliouche on the bench for a game moved from the French capital due to the poor state of the Parc des Princes pitch. Rennes boss Franck Haise gave a league debut to Adrien Thomasson, who joined the Bretons from the coach's former club Lens over the summer. 

Ten-man Lens denied Paris Saint-Germain a second trophy in five days as Florian Thauvin's first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory in the French Champions' Trophy.Lens were worthy winners in their first match under new coach Dino Toppmoeller, adding to the French Cup title they won under previous boss Pierre Sage in May.PSG, who beat Aston Villa on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup, struggled to find their flow at Lens' Stade Bollaert-Delelis, despite their hosts having Kyllian Antonio sent off in the first half.Luis Enrique's men will turn their attentions to the start of their Ligue 1 title defence at home against Rennes in a week's time. They will be without Portugal defender Nuno Mendes for that match, after he was also dismissed late on.Lens, runners-up in Ligue 1 behind PSG last season, qualified for this match by winning their first ever French Cup with a 3-1 final win over Nice.PSG coach Luis Enrique named a strong side, making just three changes to the team which won the Super Cup, including giving Lucas Digne his second debut after the France left-back rejoined the club from Villa. But Bradley Barcola, widely linked with a possible move to Liverpool, was not in the squad.The visitors dominated possession in the opening stages but struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser making a comfortable save from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.Lens grew into the contest and grabbed a 32nd-minute lead when PSG failed to clear before Thauvin slotted home at the back post from Matthieu Udol's cross-shot.But Toppmoeller's men were dealt a big blow six minutes before half-time when Antonio was dismissed for a studs-up tackle on Maghnes Akliouche. PSG almost made the most of their man advantage before the break but Desire Doue's effort from a tight angle bounced off the crossbar.The European champions continued to labour after the restart, though, and Thauvin flashed a strike wide as Lens continued to threaten on the counter. PSG substitute Mendes came close to an equaliser, drilling a dipping long-range shot narrowly over the bar.Luis Enrique also brought on Fabian Ruiz and Ousmane Dembele off the bench, with the latter drawing another simple save from Risser. PSG were reduced to 10 men themselves with three minutes remaining, as Mendes was shown a straight red card for elbowing Lens wing-back Michal Skoras in the face off the ball. PSG sign Belgian winger Godts from AjaxMeanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain have signed Belgian left winger Mika Godts from Ajax on a five-year contract, the two-time European champions announced. The 21-year-old had a breakout season last year, scoring 17 goals and providing 12 assists in the Dutch league, where he was named young player of the year.According to Ajax, the transfer fee was 55mn euros ($64mn), including bonuses. Godts has been capped twice by Belgium but missed out on a spot in their World Cup squad.After coming through the academy at Genk, he signed for Ajax in 2023. Godts went on to make 115 appearances for Ajax in all competitions, totalling 54 goal involvements."I feel incredibly proud to be joining one of the best clubs in the world. I can't wait to pull on this shirt and experience the Parc des Princes and its supporters," Godts said in a statement on PSG's website. 

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Saturday announced that Spanish forward Ferran Torres is joining the club's squad, coming from FC Barcelona.In a statement, PSG noted that Torres has signed with the Club until 2031 and that he will wear the number 9 shirt.The former Manchester City player joined FC Barcelona in 2022, making 207 appearances for the club and scoring 65 goals.During his time at FC Barcelona, Torres won three LaLiga titles, as well as the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup twice.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique says the European champions "want to win everything" this season, ahead of their first chance of silverware in today's UEFA Super Cup final against Aston Villa.PSG secured their second straight Champions League title last term, as well as a fifth consecutive Ligue 1 crown, the UEFA Super Cup, the French Champions' Trophy and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.Enrique's side get their new campaign under way in Salzburg against Europa League winners Villa. "We have to show what our level is and that has to be shown on the pitch," the Spaniard told reporters. "We want to win everything and, if you look at history, it's hard to win all the time. But that's what we want to aim for."PSG won the Super Cup 12 months ago with a penalty shoot-out victory over Tottenham. They have a strong recent record against English opposition, including beating Aston Villa in a dramatic Champions League quarter-final in 2024-2025."It's difficult to ascertain how they'll be after seeing only a few pre-season games," Enrique said of facing Unai Emery's side. "We'll see what sort of game it will be and what condition both sides will be in. Each opponent we've faced over the last few years have shown how dangerous they can be. We're happy about how we were able to play. Our aim is to prove how unpredictable we can be."Paris have taken a strong squad to Austria, including winger Bradley Barcola who has been heavily linked with a possible move to Liverpool. There is no place for recent signing Lucas Digne, though, just two days after the France left-back departed Villa Park to rejoin PSG."We shared a big hug yesterday. He congratulated me on all that I've accomplished at the club and I did the same to him," said captain Marquinhos, who was Digne's teammate during the France international's first stint at the Parc des Princes from 2013-2016."He's had a long journey back, but I'm so happy he's back. I'm really happy he's here. He's a good guy and a good friend." 

Manchester United managed a creditable 1-1 draw with European champions Paris Saint-Germain in a Gothenburg friendly but the result was overshadowed by an injury to Mason Mount.The England midfielder, who joined United from Chelsea in 2023, has been hampered by injury problems since arriving at Old Trafford and he lasted less than 20 minutes on Saturday after starting against PSG.Mount, 27, appeared to suffer a foot injury in Sweden and, following discussions with coaches on the touchline, left the field to be replaced by Tyler Fletcher.Mount has been restricted to just 31 league appearances - many of them as a substitute - during his first two seasons with United, who will be competing in the 2026/27 Champions League alongside PSG next term after finishing third in the Premier League.United were 1-0 down to PSG at the time of Mount's injury, having gone behind in the second minute through an Ibrahim Mbaye goal even though the French giants were missing many of their star players.But Bryan Mbeumo equalised for United in the 32nd minute, with Amad Diallo playing him in after winning the ball back. There were more injury concerns for United early in the second half when their 40-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton suffered a right hamstring problem while rushing out to make a clearance.Mbeumo might have doubled his tally but for the fine form of PSG's Matvey Safonov. The goalkeeper, however, left the pitch to jeers after escaping punishment for clattering into Joshua Zirkzee way outside of his area – an incident that may well have seen him sanctioned in a competitive match.At the other end, there were late chances for Fletcher, Shea Lacey and captain Bruno Fernandes, who linked up well with new arrival Youri Tielemans in an encouraging sign for United manager Michael Carrick."I enjoyed it," Carrick said "Good challenge. Slightly different with the way they play. We should've scored more goals."The former United and England midfielder added: "The things we were trying to get out of the game, a lot of it was there. It's good for the boys sometimes to have to problem solve and find their own way and I thought we did that. That prepares them for the season as well. In that respect there were a lot of things that maybe people don't always see that we were quite happy with. There were some good signs there."United have two more friendly fixtures, against bitter rivals Leeds in Dublin on August 12 and AC Milan in the Polish city of Wroclaw three days later, before launching their Premier League campaign away to newly-promoted Hull on August 22.
