Fresh catch boosts sales at Old Doha Port fish market

The resumption of the local fishing season has significantly revitalised business at Jabrat Al Mina Fish Market in the Old Doha Port, with abundant supplies of freshly caught local seafood driving stronger consumer demand for premium domestic fish. The renewed influx of local catches has helped restore market balance, broaden consumer choice, and keep retail prices relatively stable, while supporting the continued growth of Qatar’s domestic fisheries sector. The market is currently witnessing brisk daily activity as fishing boats unload fresh catches directly at the port before they are offered for sale. Popular local species, including hamour, kingfish, sheri, safi, Sultan Ibrahim (red mullet), faskar, as well as shrimp and oysters, are attracting strong demand from both Qatari nationals and expatriate residents. Several high-demand varieties reportedly sell out before the end of the trading day, reflecting consumers’ strong preference for freshly landed local seafood. Vendors attributed the strong sales to the reopening of the fishing season, which has substantially increased domestic supply and helped stabilise prices amid the usual seasonal fluctuations. The greater availability of locally caught fish has expanded purchasing options and further strengthened Jabrat Al Mina’s reputation as Qatar’s premier destination for fresh seafood.**media[476274]**Traders also noted that the market continues to offer a wide selection of imported seafood to cater to diverse consumer preferences, including tilapia starting at QR10 per kilogram. They added that prices may vary daily depending on normal fluctuations in supply and demand. According to the latest data, Qatar’s fishing fleet comprises thousands of licensed vessels operating along a coastline stretching approximately 563km. Continued investments in sustainable fisheries management and modern fishing infrastructure are also supporting domestic seafood production. The Ministry of Municipality has further intensified efforts to regulate fishing seasons, protect fish stocks, and promote sustainable harvesting practices to preserve marine biodiversity and ensure the sector’s long-term productivity. Meanwhile, Jabrat Al Mina has enhanced the overall shopping experience through a range of modern retail services. Fish cleaning, filleting and preparation services, high hygiene standards, electronic payment facilities, and well-organised trading areas have significantly improved convenience for customers.**media[476273]**These value-added services have also reduced waiting times and increased customer satisfaction, transforming what was once a traditional fish market into a modern retail destination. Consumers at the market praised the combination of high-quality products, competitive prices, and efficient service, emphasising that locally caught seafood remains their preferred choice for its freshness and superior taste. “Besides its excellent location and modern facilities, the market offers a truly rewarding shopping experience. It features a wide variety of local fish brought in fresh from the sea every day, many of which are difficult to find elsewhere,” said Ahmed, a shopper, who also commended the market’s contemporary design and world-class facilities. Located within the redeveloped Old Doha Port waterfront, Al Mina district has evolved into more than just a commercial marketplace. It has become a popular destination that blends Qatar’s rich maritime heritage with modern amenities, attracting residents, visitors, and tourists alike. Its growing popularity is also contributing to the broader revitalisation of Old Doha Port as a cultural, leisure, and commercial hub. With fishing activity expected to remain strong in the coming months, traders anticipate continued price stability and a steady supply of key seafood varieties. They believe this will attract even more customers to the market and further boost business activity.

Old Doha Port is set to celebrate one of Qatar’s most cherished traditions today (May 25) at 5:30pm, ahead of Eid al-Adha. Families and children will gather at the Mina District, in front of the Chabrat Al Mina Fish Market, to mark the annual Heyya Beyya tradition. Rooted in Qatari heritage and passed down through generations, Heyya Beyya is a cherished community tradition associated with Eid al-Adha. In the weeks leading up to the celebration, children plant and nurture greenery in small palm-leaf baskets known locally as “Al Hayya,” caring for them until the event. On the day itself, children gather to sing “Heyya Beyya,” a traditional folk song built around a call-and-response between children and the plant, before the baskets are cast into the sea in celebration. The Mina District’s waterfront will transform as participants arrive in traditional attire, joining in folk songs and celebrations that reflect the richness of Qatar’s cultural heritage. The event is organised in collaboration with the Qatar Scouts and Guides Association and reflects Old Doha Port’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Qatar’s cultural traditions, keeping heritage alive within the community for future generations.

Cruise season sails to record heights with 200,000 visitors

Qatar’s cruise tourism sector has charted a banner 2025-2026 season, with the Old Doha Port cruise terminal welcoming 49 ship calls and ferrying in more than 200,000 passengers and crew — a haul that cements the country’s rising stature as a marquee stop on the global cruise circuit. Announcing the figures on its official X account, Mwani Qatar said the season also drew three cruise ships making their maiden visit to Qatar, a telling marker of the country’s growing prominence on the world cruise map. Visitors arriving at the terminal step into a seamless and well-rounded tourism experience. Strategically anchored in the heart of Doha, the cruise facility lies just minutes from Qatar’s leading attractions, and offers modern amenities, swift entry and exit procedures, and a curated portfolio of excursions that showcase both the country’s rich cultural heritage and its contemporary flair. These gains dovetail with the wider push by Qatar Tourism to deepen partnerships with international cruise lines, underpinning sustainable growth across the sector and advancing the national drive for economic diversification. Cruise tourism also plays a pivotal role in delivering the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 by lifting international visitor numbers and enriching the country’s tourism offering. At the heart of this success story is the transformation of Old Doha Port. Recently redeveloped into a fully integrated tourism destination, the port now boasts a state-of-the-art cruise terminal spanning more than 23,000sqm, with 750 meters of berths and a basin built to host two mega cruise ships simultaneously. In parallel, Qatar’s wider ports sector has undergone sweeping modernisation over the past decade, propelled by infrastructure upgrades and digital transformation. A standout among them is Hamad Port — one of the region’s most advanced — which harnesses automation and digital systems, including the ‘Mwani’ platform, to streamline operations and reinforce Qatar’s standing as a premier hub for maritime transport and cruise tourism.

QRCS launches 'Hand in Hand' mural initiative to promote community solidarity

The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched the "Hand in Hand" mural initiative as part of the "Qatar Is Good" campaign, embodying the meaning of community solidarity through an innovative approach that brings humanitarian work closer to people and makes them active participants in it.The QRCS said in a statement that the initiative, which kicked off Saturday at the Old Doha Port, comes within the framework of strengthening social cohesion and promoting a culture of giving.It presents, the statement added, an interactive model of how feelings of empathy and support can be transformed into real action that leaves a tangible impact on the ground.The mural, launched in the presence of QRCS board member and secretary-general Eng. Ibrahim bin Hashem al-Sada and resource development director Khalid Abdulrahman al-Ibrahim along with a number of guests and members of the public, will tour several locations across the country, including Katara Cultural Village and Gewan Island.This will allow as many participants as possible to contribute their words in ink, creating a mosaic filled with optimism and positivity.The QRCS is inviting members of the public to write messages of hope that express gratitude and social solidarity, while emphasising the importance of national unity and collective co-operation among both citizens and residents.Each message written is not merely passing words, but a sincere expression of one shared heart beating with hope and responsibility.The "Hand in Hand" initiative reflects the QRCS's vision of humanitarian innovation and its continuous efforts to strengthen the spirit of solidarity within society through modern and inspiring methods.It goes beyond spreading positivity by directly transforming community interaction into financial support that contributes to funding humanitarian projects within Qatar, giving each participation real value and deeper meaning.The initiative combines simplicity with profound impact.With a single touch – through digital donations made by scanning the barcode displayed on the mural – a message of support is instantly transformed into an actual donation.The initiative aims to instill a culture of giving and social responsibility.The QRCS extended an open invitation to all members of the community to take part in this experience, affirming that every word of support has its place, will be read, and will leave a positive impact beyond the moment it is written.

La Menina Sculpture unveiled at Old Doha Port, celebrating Qatari maritime heritage

Old Doha Port unveiled the iconic “La Menina” sculpture by Spanish artist Antonio Azzato, painted by Qatari artist Muna AlBader, in the presence of Alvaro Renedo, ambassador of Spain to Qatar, and Eng Mohammed Abdulla al-Mulla, CEO of Old Doha Port.Inspired by Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez, the sculpture reflects Spain’s artistic legacy and reimagines tradition through a contemporary lens. Historically associated with the strength of the Spanish monarchy and the brilliance of Spain’s Golden Age, La Menina has evolved into a modern symbol of cultural identity and national pride.At Old Doha Port, the artwork takes on a distinct local dimension. Its blue maritime design pays tribute to Qatar’s deep-rooted relationship with the sea, while the flowing wave motifs, drawing inspiration from both the Qatari and Spanish flags, symbolise dialogue and cultural exchange.Internationally, ‘La Menina’ serves as a travelling cultural ambassador of Spain, adapting to each host country while preserving its Spanish roots. This balance between global recognition and local interpretation creates a meaningful artistic bridge between Qatar and Spain, making the sculpture both globally recognisable and locally resonant.
