Doha on Sunday hosted a specialized workshop on shaping the digital future, exploring the European Union's (EU) approach to platform and artificial intelligence governance, as well as lessons learned from the EU.Co-organized by the Public Prosecution and the Delegation of the EU to the State of Qatar, the workshop is structured around three main areas of growing strategic importance. The first focuses on digital platform governance, examining the allocation of responsibilities among public authorities, platforms, regulatory bodies, trusted flaggers, researchers, and civil society.It places particular emphasis on the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) as a leading regulatory framework and explores ways to combat illegal content and disinformation.The second area focuses on the use of artificial intelligence in criminal justice, examining current and emerging applications of AI in criminal justice systems, including predictive policing, risk assessment, facial recognition, forensic analysis, and judicial decision-support systems.It also highlights concerns about bias, transparency, due process safeguards, and human oversight, as well as the latest regulatory developments related to trustworthy artificial intelligence.The third area addresses the protection of critical infrastructure and cyber diplomacy. Sessions examine the importance of cyber diplomacy in strengthening international stability and delve into ways to protect critical infrastructure from serious cyber incidents, including ransomware attacks and hybrid threats that combine cyber operations with information manipulation.Participants are also set to discuss ways to strengthen preparedness, response capabilities, and diplomatic coordination to counter these threats.The workshop underscores the pivotal role of international dialogue and the exchange of expertise in developing sustainable digital policies that balance technological innovation with the protection of public security and fundamental rights.It also reflects the Qatar-EU commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by the digital age. 

At just 20 years and 16 days, Paul Seixas made history as the youngest ever winner of the Giro di Lombardia and ensured that his stunning breakout season would end in glory.He was also the fourth youngest ever winner of one of cycling's prestigious Monument one-day classics.By contrast, that was more than two years younger than Tour de France king Tadej Pogacar and Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel when they won Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2021 and 2022 respectively.Even the great Eddy Merckx was 260 days older than Seixas when he won Milan-San Remo in 1966.It has been a truly remarkable season, mostly as a teenager.Seixas announced himself in February with his first senior victory at the Faun-Ardeche Classic, where he simply rode a host of strong climbers off his wheel.It was the same at Lombardia."He didn't really attack, he just kind of made his own pace, a high pace," said Tom Pidcock, who finished sixth. "He was super strong."Seixas won his first World Tour level events in April -- the week-long Tour of the Basque Country and the Fleche Wallonne one-day classic.Then, in July, he finished fourth in his debut Grand Tour, while under intense media scrutiny at the Tour de France.But there had been a feeling in some quarters that he was running out of steam as he was beaten by Isaac Del Toro in a sprint finish at the Montreal GP last month after losing concentration in the run-in.Then, back in Montreal at the world championships two weeks ago, he cramped up in the final few kilometres when in medal contention and limped home in 15th.However, a week before that he won an impressive time-trial world bronze medal.And in Lombardia, he seemed to be back in the kind of form that made him the only rival able to even attempt to follow a swashbuckling Pogacar when he launched his long-range attacks at Strade Bianche and Liege. 'INCREDIBLE MENTAL MATURITY'Some people criticised Seixas for lacking panache at the Tour, but he had crashed out of the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes a month earlier, was riding a three-week tour for the first time in his life, and, like everyone else, was trying to manage riding through a heatwave with 40C temperatures."We all know about his physical attributes, but he has incredible mental maturity," said Seixas's sporting director at Decathlon CMA CGM, Julien Jurdie."He already masters all the elements. He's a true champion - everyone listens to him."And he has delivered in a way that makes him stand out.Pogacar at the same age was still racing at under-23 level.Seixas's results this year are better than Pogacar's achievements were at a year older, in 2019 when he won the Tour of California and finished third at the Vuelta a Espana.But within a couple of years, Pogacar was already looking virtually unbeatable - whether in one-day classics or stage races.Until he crashed out of the Vuelta in late August, Pogacar had won six out of nine Grand Tours, twice finishing second to Jonas Vingegaard at the Tour and coming third in his debut at the Vuelta.He has not finished outside the top five of a Monument since the 2020 Milan-San Remo, winning nine of his last 13.Seixas is not at Pogacar's level and it remains to be seen whether he can progress as much."We keep working hard... to win as much as we can until he destroys everybody!" Pogacar said after being pushed to the limit by Seixas at Liege in April.It is perhaps unlikely that the Frenchman makes the same meteoric improvement, though, as Pogacar was not as diligent in his preparation in his early career as Seixas is already.But that dedication will stand Seixas in good stead."I'm always motivated, I take training seriously. It's my passion," said Seixas. 

Khaled Abdulaziz al-Eid of Saudi Arabia won the Diamond Tour on the third and final day of the second round of the 10th Longines Hathab Qatar Equestrian Tour yesterday at the Qatar Equestrian Federation’s indoor arena.Al Eid topped the 150cm Diamond Tour in a time of 38.06 seconds on Rakker DMC without incurring any penalties.Fellow Saudi rider Abdulaziz Fahad Aleid finished second in 39.33 seconds on Q Hayen, while Qatar’s Hamad Nasser al-Qadi took third place on Happy Tina with a time of 35.94 seconds.Deputy Championship Director Saeed al-Rashdi presented the awards to the podium winners of the category.In the 120cm Bronze Tour dominated by Qatari riders, Khalid Jassim al-Suwaidi won on E.T’s Queeny Z with a time of 28.16 seconds without penalties. Sharida Nasser al-Kaabi finished second on Extra Pam in 29.37 seconds, while Suhaim Hamad al-Yafei took third place on Miss Tarara Les Hauts after clocking 29.80 seconds.In the team category, Team Ajwad secured first place with a combined time of 62.84 seconds, followed by Team Al-Bidda in second place (68.89 seconds) and Team Al-Shaqab in third (56.22 seconds). Member of the Championship Organizing Committee Khalid Sanad al-Nuaimi honoured the podium winners of the Bronze Tour.Meanwhile, Sultan Jassim al-Suwaidi won the Future Riders class over 90cm obstacles on Khaleesi, recording a time of 16.60 seconds without penalties. Mashael Mohammed al-Thani finished second on Reve du Coeur des Collines in 17.83 seconds, while Alqaqaa bin Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani took third place on Early Star d’Alfa in 18.42 seconds. Chairman of the Championship’s Ground Jury Ahmed al-Badawi presented the awards.The Longines Hathab Qatar Equestrian Tour, organised by the Qatar Equestrian Federation in partnership with Al Shaqab, runs until June 2027.

 Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Qatar have largely moved beyond the first stage of digital payment adoption, but a productivity gap remains. According to Visa’s new survey for its ‘Pay and Get Paid 2026’ report, the vast majority of surveyed SMEs in Qatar actively accept and make digital payments, underscoring how deeply digital commerce is now embedded in the country’s small business economy.  However, many SMEs still manage the related financial and operational tasks separately, with only 43% currently using an integrated solution that connects payments with broader business management. The report shows that financial administration and disconnected tools create friction for SMEs, with surveyed businesses citing challenges in tracking outstanding invoices (46%), keeping payroll records organised (42%), and keeping financial records organised (40%). These pain points reflect a disconnect between payments and the operational tasks that follow, with some businesses juggling multiple systems to keep their business running, the report stated.  According to the report, 31% of surveyed SMEs find an all-in-one solution appealing. Meanwhile, 43% currently use an integrated payment and business platform, and the same proportion say they are likely to switch providers if offered a unified solution. With stated appeal trailing current adoption, the findings suggest providers will need to demonstrate more clearly how integrated tools can simplify business operations and deliver tangible value.  The report points to several perception barriers that may be limiting broader adoption. Among SMEs not currently using an integrated business tool, cited concerns include the belief that their business is too small to need one (18%), that such tools may be too expensive (14%), or that they do not trust relying on a single provider (14%). These findings suggest that broader adoption will depend on helping SMEs better understand how integrated tools can be relevant, accessible, and scalable for businesses at different stages of growth.  At the same time, the experience of SMEs already using integrated solutions points to a developing value case. The report found that surveyed businesses in Qatar using an integrated payment and business platform report 51% satisfaction, with 57% reporting efficiency gains, including reductions in the time and effort required to manage their business. Beyond efficiency, integrated platforms may also create new opportunities for financial institutions to deepen SME relationships by using richer payments and business-management data to better understand cash flow patterns, support risk assessment, and potentially enable more relevant lending solutions over time.  Luca Bianconi, vice president and country manager for Qatar at Visa, said, “As digital transactions become part of everyday commerce, the value for SMEs increasingly lies in what those payments can enable after the transaction. For issuers, this points to a broader opportunity: secure, reliable, and integrated platforms can help reduce administrative friction while building a more complete, data-informed view of SME needs. 

 Qatar Foundation (QF) highlighted the key features of Pre-University Education Vision 2040, shedding light on the sector’s key milestones and achievements during its Pre-University Education Forum, which served as a platform for dialogue and shared reflection on the future of education and learning across QF schools.  Coinciding with World Teachers’ Day, the forum offers an opportunity to celebrate the vital role educators play in supporting and inspiring students, creating opportunities for learning and growth, and strengthening educational practices to respond to students’ needs and aspirations.  The forum brought together teachers, students, school leaders, and practitioners from across Pre-University Education schools and institutions through a series of sessions, workshops, and discussions focused on exchanging experiences and exploring innovative educational ideas and practices with a meaningful impact inside and beyond the classroom.  The forum also provided an opportunity to reflect on achievements over the past year and share experiences and ideas as part of Pre-University Education Vision 2040, which aims to strengthen educational quality and respond to the needs of a rapidly changing world, while keeping identity, culture, and values at the heart of the student learning experience.  Speaking at the forum, QF’s PUE President, Abeer al-Khalifa, affirmed that the future of education is charted not only by the knowledge provided to students, but also by the human values instilled in them that contribute to preparing them to become the changemakers of tomorrow.  She added that QF aspires to graduate students with a strong understanding of their identity and roots, equipped with critical-thinking skills and the ability to make responsible decisions, enabling them to contribute effectively to the progress of their communities and adapt to change while remaining grounded in their heritage and proud of their identity.  Al-Khalifa noted that Vision 2040 represents a shared commitment to all students and a responsibility shared across the education community, emphasising that exchanging the vision widely contributes to aligning collective efforts and strengthening awareness of the role each individual plays in shaping the future of education.  Al Khalifa further emphasised the central role teachers play in turning the vision into reality by designing meaningful learning experiences that contribute to building students’ character, nurturing their curiosity and confidence, and empowering them to discover their strengths and reach their full potential.  The forum also announced the winners of the Pre-University Education Awards 2026, which recognise outstanding individuals and teams whose contributions have strengthened educational quality and enriched the experiences of students and teachers.  Mahmoud Mohammed Aladdasi of Qatar Leadership Academy received the Outstanding Teacher Award, while Lina Othman of Qatar Academy Msheireb received the Outstanding Practitioner Award. The Outstanding Student Award was presented to Jassim Mohammed al-Mossalam of Qatar Academy Msheireb.  The Ejadah Team from PUE Central Departments also received the Outstanding Team Award, while the Islamic Civilization Curriculum Team received the Curriculum Excellence Award.  The ceremony also recognised recipients of the Thana’a Professional Excellence accolade in recognition of their outstanding performance, dedication, and teamwork, which contributed to supporting the advancement of Pre-University Education at Qatar Foundation.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and for ensuring the large-scale, unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid.In a press statement on Monday evening, Guterres emphasized that ongoing hostilities have inflicted unspeakable suffering on Palestinians in the Strip. He stressed that civilians are living in harsh, unbearable conditions and that their suffering must end immediately.The Secretary-General pointed out that the ceasefire which began in October 2025 helped alleviate some of the suffering but has not yet provided security, adequate humanitarian aid, or a credible path toward recovery and peace.Citing data from UN agencies, he noted that Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of more than 74,000 people-including 20,000 children-and the injury of over 100,000 others. Meanwhile, the entire population of the Strip, numbering approximately 2.1 million, has been displaced, and vast areas have been destroyed.He urged all parties to fully implement their obligations and to move to the next phase of the ceasefire, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2803."It is time for the ceasefire to become permanent. It is time to allow humanitarian assistance at scale. And it is time to respect international law,” he said.He said that there is a need to build the political path to lasting peace across the whole region, adding that the United Nations remains unwavering in its commitment to these imperatives.

Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) welcomed more than 140 high school seniors and their parents to a special Open House, giving prospective students a chance to learn about studying medicine at WCM-Q and how to prepare for the transition from high school to college. Organised by the Office of Student Outreach and Educational Development, the one-day event was designed for Grade 12 or Year 13 students and their parents, giving them a chance to learn more about WCM-Q’s admissions process, requirements and application timelines. Participants also learned more about the college’s academic curriculum, outreach programmes, state-of-the-art facilities and student life. Noha Saleh, director of premedical administration, student outreach and educational development, opened the event with a presentation on admissions requirements, timelines and outreach programmes available for high school students. The event also included two panel discussions, allowing participants to hear directly from WCM-Q students, faculty and staff. Attendees also had an opportunity to ask questions during the Q&A sessions that followed each panel discussion. The faculty panel featured Dr Amal Khidir, associate professor of paediatrics, Dr Majda Sebah, assistant professor of chemistry, and Dr Simeon Scott Andrews, lecturer in chemistry and biochemistry. Dr Rachid Bendriss, professor of English as a second language, assistant professor of education in medicine, and associate dean for foundation, student outreach and educational development programmes, moderated the panel. Dr Bendriss said: “We understand that choosing a career in medicine and a college to attend is not easy. We are happy to host this event to allow graduating students and their parents to ask questions, explore their options, and better understand the opportunities available to them at WCM-Q and in the medical field. I believe the participants benefited greatly from interacting with faculty, staff and students and learning more about the journey to becoming a doctor.” Farhan Aziz, director of admissions at WCM-Q, moderated the student panel, which featured final-year medical student Reem al-Janahi and second-year pre-medical students Noof AlMalik and Mustafa Shammout. Their participation gave attendees firsthand insight into life at WCM-Q, including the academic experience and the transition into the pre-medical and medical programmes. While WCM-Q offers weekly small-scale Open Houses throughout the academic year for prospective students from various high school grade levels, this event was organised on a larger scale specifically for final-year high school students and their parents. 

The Philippine Embassy in Doha Qatar has announced the full implementation of the Philippine electronic Visa (e-Visa) system in Qatar, effective on October 5, allowing eligible Qatar residents to apply online for temporary visit visas to the Philippines. Under the new system, the embassy said in a post on its social media pages that eligible Qatar residents can submit e-Visa applications through the official Philippine e-Visa website and pay the applicable fees via direct bank transfer, where required. Once approved and issued by the embassy, the e-Visa can be accessed remotely through a computer, laptop or mobile device. Visa holders may present either a digital or printed copy upon travel to the Philippines. The embassy said the e-Visa will no longer be affixed to the applicant’s passport. Applicants are also reminded to complete the Philippines’ online e-Travel registration after their e-Visa has been issued. Applicants must complete the registration within 72 hours before arrival in the Philippines to help avoid difficulties at ports of entry. The Philippines embassy stressed that applicants should not complete the e-Travel registration before their e-Visa is issued. It also clarified that Philippine e-Visas cannot be converted into other visa types and that the authorised period of stay cannot be extended. Foreign nationals planning to travel to the Philippines for purposes such as study, employment or other non-tourism activities are advised to apply for a regular visa sticker through the Philippine embassy in Qatar. The full implementation of the e-Visa system is expected to provide eligible travellers in Qatar with a more convenient and accessible way to obtain Philippine visas for temporary visits.
