His Excellency Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie stressed that investing in young people's environmental awareness and equipping them with environmental knowledge is fundamental to building a generation capable of preserving the country's natural resources and supporting its environmental sustainability efforts.HE the Minister made the remarks while honoring students and participating entities in the third edition of the 2026 Summer Environmental Club, organized by the Ministry under the theme "Guardians of the Environment." The two-week program brought together 26 students aged 11 to 17 and was attended by ministry officials and representatives of participating organizations.His Excellency said the Summer Environmental Club reflects the Ministry's commitment to offering educational programs that combine theoretical learning with practical experience, enabling participants to gain firsthand insight into environmental work and the State's efforts to protect the environment and conserve biodiversity.He emphasized that environmental protection begins with knowledge and awareness before becoming a daily practice and a shared responsibility. The enthusiasm and engagement demonstrated by the students during workshops and field visits, he added, reflect growing environmental awareness among younger generations and their readiness to contribute to national initiatives.His Excellency affirmed the Ministry's commitment to engaging young people through awareness and training programs that introduce them to environmental challenges and the solutions used to address them, while encouraging them to develop ideas and initiatives that support environmental protection.HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie also expressed appreciation to the participating entities and Ministry departments for their contribution to the program, noting that their cooperation in organizing activities and field visits enriched the club's content and enhanced the students' learning experience.The two-week program featured a series of workshops and field visits covering environmental photography, recycling, environmental monitoring and inspection, marine biodiversity, the safe use of radiation, marine environmental protection, houbara bustard breeding, and hazardous waste tracking. The activities were designed to enhance participants' environmental awareness and provide them with practical experience in environmental conservation. 

HE Minister of State for Interior Affairs Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Faisal bin Mohammed Al-Thani met on Tuesday with the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the State of Qatar Syahda Guruh Langkah Samudera.The meeting discussed cooperation relations, particularly in security-related fields and explored avenues to strengthen and further develop these ties, in addition to several matters of mutual interest.

Republic of Korea and Ukraine held "constructive" talks on Tuesday about the fate of two North Korean soldiers captured while fighting in Russia, Seoul said Tuesday.Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiga discussed the matter during talks in Seoul.The soldiers were captured by Ukrainian forces in January last year while fighting for Russia in the Kursk region.North Korea and Russia have demanded the repatriation of the pair, but rights groups and experts have warned they could face severe punishment if returned to Pyongyang.The soldiers have asked to be sent to Korea, which would in effect amount to defection.Seoul is seeking their transfer on the grounds that they are citizens of a single Republic of Korea envisaged in its constitution.North Korea and Republic of Korea remain technically at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.The nations are separated by a demilitarised zone, but Seoul considers the entire Korean peninsula as one country.The ministers "engaged in constructive discussions" on the soldiers' future yesterday, a Korean foreign ministry spokesman told reporters.They agreed to be guided by "international law and humanitarian principles"."The government will continue to make diplomatic efforts to advance and resolve the issue of the North Korean prisoners of war," the spokesman said.Writing on X, Sybiga said he and Cho discussed the matter "in detail".It has been reported that North Korean authorities instructed troops to commit suicide rather than allow themselves to be captured while fighting for Russia.One of the two held by Ukraine told Korean broadcaster MBC earlier this year: "If I am not brought to Korea, I will end up dying."North Korean leader Kim Jong-un praised North Korean troops killed in Ukraine in April for taking part in "death-defying hand-to-hand fights and heroic suicidal explosions... without hesitation", according to the Korean Central News Agency.Kyiv had assured Seoul the two soldiers would not be repatriated to North Korea against their will, Cho said in March.Analysts say North Korea has received financial assistance, military technology, food and energy from Russia in exchange for missiles, munitions and thousands of troops for Moscow's war in Ukraine.The two countries had signed a mutual defence treaty in 2024, obliging each to provide military assistance "without delay" if either comes under attack.More than 7,000 North Korean troops were killed or wounded while fighting alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region during the 2024-2025 campaign, the Kyiv Independent quoted Ukraine's military intelligence agency as saying this week.Sybiga said he and Cho also discussed "shared challenges stemming from the deepening cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang". 

The frontrunner to become Britain's next prime minister, Andy Burnham, vowed in a speech Monday to "bring about the biggest rebalancing of power our country has seen" if he succeeds Keir Starmer.Burnham — currently the only candidate to replace Starmer, who resigned as Labour leader and prime minister earlier this month — pledged to devolve greater powers to regional mayors, including the northwestern city of Manchester where until recently he was in charge."I am going to give Britain the circuit breaker it needs," Burnham told an invited audience in Manchester, pledging to put power "in the hands of the people and places who can use it best"."We need a new determination to raise living standards of every single person in this land," he added."And we must accept that to do that, to fix the economy and the country, we need to change politics and we need to do it now."Opposition leaders criticised the speech."He doesn't have a plan beyond telling mayors to go and sort it out," said Kemi Badenoch, leader of the main opposition Conservatives.Robert Jenrick of the hard-right Reform UK party, which has led national opinion polls for more than a year, said the British public wanted "radical change now"."People can't wait 10 years," he told the GB News television station, after Burnham promised "a 10-year mission to raise living standards across the land".'Streamlined state'Delivering his speech from a Manchester museum, Burnham described Britain as "one of the most over-centralised countries in the world".Starmer, who became prime minister in July 2024 after Labour won an election landslide, announced his resignation last Monday. If no challenger comes forward to replace him, Burnham could be prime minister as early as mid-July.Burnham would inherit a British economy that ruling centre-left Labour vowed to revitalise when it won power in July 2024 after 14 years in opposition.After a tough 18 months, growth showed signs of picking up until the Middle East war hindered progress and pushed up inflation.Burnham used his speech to pledge fiscal discipline and to reduce the country's ballooning welfare bill, having already sought to calm markets by committing to the government's current borrowing limits.He proposed the creation of a "No. 10 North" to co-ordinate the devolution — a play on words on the prime minister's address at 10 Downing Street."We will create a more streamlined state with a clearer purpose: to power up all parts of the country and put a laser-like focus on growth and regeneration," he said."The change will be driven through the prime minister's office in an extended operation, based here in Manchester."He vowed that office would "oversee the biggest council house building programme since the post-war period".However, he did not set out how that would be funded, amid squeezed public finances in the United Kingdom.'Manchesterism' Coining the phrase "Manchesterism", which he defines as business-friendly socialism, Burnham has railed against trickle-down economics and neo-liberalism.Among his more defined economic beliefs is greater "public control" over services like transport, water and energy, though he was vague Monday on whether this meant full renationalisation of utilities.Under Starmer, British railway operators were gradually re-entering public hands.Burnham has positioned himself as a champion for small businesses and proposed cutting business rates for pubs and music venues."I will back our scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs, and creatives, as I have done here (in Manchester), and show how Britain will be the innovation nation of the next decade," he said Monday.Rain Newton-Smith, head of British employers' lobby group, the CBI, said "business leaders will be encouraged by efforts to use the levers of devolution to spread prosperity across the country".In the days since Starmer resigned, speculation has been rife about who Burnham will appoint as finance minister.Rachel Reeves has served as chancellor of the exchequer since Labour returned to power almost two years ago but reportedly faces the axe if Burnham takes office. 

The pound, set ‌for its largest monthly drop since March, edged up on Monday as ​Andy Burnham, Britain's likely next ‌prime minister, laid out his plans for the economy in his first ‌speech since becoming ⁠a lawmaker.Burnham, who ‌returned to Westminster this month after winning ‌a parliamentary seat, is the only declared candidate to take over from Prime Minister Keir ⁠Starmer, and could be installed in Downing Street within weeks.He said he would not announce any government appointments until the end of the selection process, and that his plans are consistent with the party's 2024 manifesto, committing to a series of fiscal rules that financial markets monitor.The pound has lost 1.7% this month against the dollar, which has risen to its highest in around a year in response to an ​interim peace deal in the Iran war and a reassessment of the US rate outlook.Sterling was last up 0.14% at $1.323, around its weakest in seven months, against a backdrop of political turmoil ‌at home, including Starmer's resignation a ⁠week ago.Gilt investors in particular are concerned about how Burnham plans to ​improve UK growth. The Labour lawmaker is known to favour more expansionary fiscal policies, something the UK would struggle to afford, given the limited headroom for extra borrowing or spending.Few expect a repeat of former Prime Minister Liz Truss' attempt to boost the economy with billions of pounds in unfunded tax cuts that destabilised the gilt market so badly the Bank of England had to step in to stabilise it.Who Burnham chooses as finance minister could determine whether UK borrowing rates are kept under control, analysts said."Gilt yields' behaviour since the pandemic, raising borrowing costs by nearly ‌double in a handful of ‌years and our continued deficit spending suggest ⁠that the last thing needed is a big round of handouts," Caxton strategist David ⁠Stritch said."Given what happened last ⁠time an ambitious, but unfunded, departure from economic orthodoxy was announced by a UK government, it ended in catastrophe. Burnham would be very wise to avoid the same pitfall," he said.Starmer said last week he would step down, just two years after winning a huge parliamentary majority for Labour.Given Starmer had been under pressure for some time to resign, financial markets ​had largely factored in the news and are instead focused on whom Burnham chooses as finance minister.In the face of the political uncertainty, investors have built up the biggest bet against sterling since June 2015.They hold a short position in the pound worth $8.72bn, according to weekly data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the largest since May 2015's record $9.567bn.This week also brings several other risk events for markets, including the monthly US employment report and a speech on Wednesday from new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin ‌Warsh, who joins other global ​central bankers at the European Central Bank's annual gathering in the Portuguese town of Sintra.

HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi met on Monday with the State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Ali Mohamed Omar, on the sidelines of the Consultative Meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers, held in Amman, Jordan.During the meeting, they discussed cooperation relations between the two countries and ways to support and enhance them, in addition to several topics of mutual interest.

HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi held talks on Monday with the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation at the Government of National Unity of the State of Libya, Taher Salem Al Baour.The discussions took place on the margins of the Arab foreign ministers' consultative meeting, which was held in the Jordanian capital Amman.The two officials discussed existing cooperation between the two nations and explored ways to further enhance ties across various fields. They also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of common concern.

His Excellency the Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah al-Attiyah met Monday with Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Qatar Arman Issagaliyev. They discussed the two countries' bilateral relations and means to bolster them in the areas of agriculture, food security, and municipal twinning.
