Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho hailed playmaker Arda Guler on Monday ahead of the team's visit to face Elche in La Liga.The Turkish midfielder came on as a substitute in Madrid's 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday and helped steady the team when they were wobbling under pressure. Guler is not assured of a starting place at Madrid, with Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham all part of Mourinho's regular side.The 21-year-old is competing with record signing Yan Diomande and Brahim Diaz among others for minutes, ahead of the central midfield duo. "There are people more qualified than me to talk about his development, people who have been here since he arrived, about how he's transformed physically," Mourinho told reporters."But for me, his quality of play is incredible -- his vision, his decision-making, his playmaking, the stability he brings to the team, his creativity... "For me, he's a player with fantastic potential who already has some very impressive stats." Guler has shown he has a strong link with Mbappe on the pitch, regularly combining well with the French forward, including for Madrid's fourth goal against Rayo.Mourinho said he would not go completely overboard with praise for Guler, who arrived from Fenerbahce in 2023. "Maybe I don't want to go so far as to say 'top, top, top' three times, but I can definitely say 'top, top'," joked the Portuguese coach.One player still looking for his best form at Madrid is Vinicius. The Brazilian winger has scored one goal this season and Mourinho reiterated his view that Vinicius is still not at his best. "The best version of him is scoring goals. Obviously, assisting is important, working for the team is very important. Commitment, solidarity, and teamwork are very important," said Mourinho. "But there's another Vinicius, the Vinicius who arrived in Lisbon last season (in the Champions League) and in close matches, in the knockout rounds, gets one chance, scores a goal and that's it."He's lacking that top-level performance lately, but I am happy with him." Second-placed Madrid trail La Liga leaders Barcelona, who boast a 100 percent record, by three points. 

Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe said Monday it was natural for people to consider him as a potential Ballon d'Or winner this year after his World Cup exploits. The France captain scored 10 goals at the tournament this summer to win the Golden Boot, with his country finishing fourth, and has netted 22 in the competition during his career, making him the World Cup's all-time top scorer.  Mbappe, 27, has not yet won the prestigious trophy given to the world's best player. "I think that when you play for Real Madrid, which is the best club in the world, naturally people associate you with that kind of award, they associate you with collective awards, individual awards," Mbappe told reporters. "A lot of people, when they see me in the street, talk to me about the Ballon d'Or, a lot of people talk about me as a possible Ballon d'Or winner... "Of course I made a lot of history this summer in the most important competition in sport, but we'll see. "I have the feeling that it's a good year for that, but there's still a long time to go and people are free to vote for whoever they think is the best player in the world." Since joining Real Madrid in 2024 Mbappe has scored huge quantities of goals but the club has failed to win a major trophy.On Tuesday the record 15-time European champions host Inter Milan in the Champions League in the first match of the league phase. During Mbappe's first two years at Madrid the team has appeared unbalanced, with too many star names, including the Frenchman and Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior, widely considered not to be contributing enough to the team effort -- in contrast to Ousmane Dembele at Paris Saint-Germain and Raphinha at Barcelona. "We have to improve," admitted Mbappe. "But I could play dumb and tell you that I score more goals than (Dembele and Raphinha), and that they need to score more goals to be like me. "Everyone is different, but I want to do things intelligently and say that of course I have to improve and all that, but I don't like comparisons because I think I do a lot of things that others don't do."Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho recently said he would prefer if Mbappe scored fewer goals but also worked hard to help the team win titles. Mbappe said he would accept lower numbers if it led to trophies, but noted they were not mutually exclusive. "I'd take 30 goals with titles, yes, but... for me it's an absurd debate," said Mbappe. "I always want to score goals and win titles... you don't have to choose, you can do both things." - Mourinho faces old friends - Veteran Portuguese coach Mourinho led Inter to Champions League glory in 2010 at the Santiago Bernabeu before he departed to take over at Real Madrid. Despite his history with the Italian side, whom he steered to the treble that year, the coach said that only mattered before and after, but not during the match. "There aren't many (people) left from my time, but it'll always be a pleasure to see people, even if I don't know them, but people who defend Inter, before and after," said Mourinho."During the game I want to win, they want to win, and there won't be time to think about things from a wonderful past." Mourinho wants his Madrid players to bounce back from their first defeat of the season, 1-0 at Real Betis on Friday in La Liga. "I want to win. I could tell you I want to play well, but I don't want to play well like we did against Betis and lose," said Mourinho. "Obviously we're in a phase where we play eight games and the objective in these eight games is to qualify, and I think we're going to do that. But I want to think about this match in isolation from that context. "I want to think about this match as a one-off game. I don't want to think that we still have seven more matches to play, and I want to win."rbs/jc

Barcelona remain hopeful of signing Julian Alvarez before the transfer window closes, club president Joan Laporta said, but Atletico Madrid continue to resist attempts to prise away the Argentina forward.Barca coach Hansi Flick acknowledged that the club could end the summer without signing a new striker if their pursuit of Alvarez ultimately fails.The Catalan giants have made Alvarez their prime target, with Spanish media reporting Laporta's stance is effectively "Alvarez or nobody" as Barca seek to strengthen their attack following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.Atletico, however, have repeatedly stated the 2022 World Cup winner is not for sale. Asked by AFP for comment, an Atletico source said the club had made their position clear already on multiple occasions.Alvarez, 26, missed Atletico training on Wednesday due to illness, days after being jeered by some of his own supporters during Sunday's 2-2 La Liga draw against Villarreal.Barcelona's interest in Alvarez has been public for months, and the player said during the World Cup that he would like to leave.In July, Laporta revealed that Barca had submitted a bid for the striker and said the offer would remain on the table even after Atletico informed them the player was not available.Speaking again, Laporta reiterated that Barcelona have not abandoned hope of reaching an agreement with Atletico."It seems that the player wants to come to Barca, and therefore we continue to hold on to our hope, our intention – always with the utmost respect for Atletico Madrid – of being able to sign the player," Laporta said in a video published by the club.Laporta also said Barcelona had received "information" indicating Atletico had held discussions with other clubs about a possible sale, strengthening the club's belief that a transfer could still happen.Arsenal have been linked with Alvarez in recent days, while Real Madrid made an approach earlier in the summer, although it was not considered a serious attempt to secure the striker's signature."We would like to reach an understanding with Atletico Madrid – we maintain our proposal, our offer to Atletico Madrid," Laporta said. "Hopefully there will be an understanding between the two clubs, between all of us, so that if they sell the player Barca will be the ones that can acquire the services of Julian Alvarez."Flick avoided discussing the player directly when asked about Barcelona's interest but admitted the club's plans must balance short-term ambitions with long-term stability."I don't want to speak about Julian. I only want to (speak) about the situation of the club. We made some really good, good transfers now in this market," Flick told reporters ahead of Thursday's match against Athletic Bilbao."Our goal is clear, but in the end also the club has to think about the future. Not only the present now. Of course as a coach I will say 'OK, give me the best you can have, and more and more and more', maybe it works or maybe not. I have total confidence with the quality we have now."The only recognised centre-forward in Barca's squad is Egyptian teenager Hamza Abdelkarim, who impressed in pre-season but has yet to make his official debut.Barcelona began their La Liga campaign with winger Raphinha leading the line in a 5-0 victory over Elche, and Flick admitted alternative solutions may be needed if Alvarez does not arrive.Midfielders Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo, as well as new arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi could be used in a false nine role. "Of course we have to manage something, we have to maybe find solutions for some situations and some games, but the quality we have now is huge," said Flick."For me the club is doing a great job. Deco is doing a great job. We're looking at the future, not just for this moment but we're looking at the next three, four, five years. I think the club is stabilised and this is what we all want." 

Real Madrid appointed Jose Mourinho as their coach on Thursday on a three-year deal, with the Portuguese veteran making a sensational return to the Spanish capital after 13 years away. The 63-year-old replaces Alvaro Arbeloa after Madrid finished a second consecutive season without a major trophy, falling behind domestic rivals Barcelona. "(Real Madrid have) agreed to appoint Jose Mourinho as the first team's head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029," said the 15-time European champions in a statement. "Jose Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins." One of football's most successful yet divisive managers, Mourinho arrives from Benfica, where the Lisbon club completed an unbeaten league campaign but finished third. Benfica said Wednesday Real Madrid were paying 15mn euros ($17.25m) for the Portuguese coach.Mourinho managed Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup during an intense period of rivalry with Pep Guardiola's golden era Barcelona side. Real Madrid became the first club to reach 100 points in a La Liga season under Mourinho in the 2011-12 campaign, although Barcelona did the same in the subsequent season before Mourinho departed.Mourinho divided the Real Madrid dressing room, with some players - including predecessor Arbeloa - fiercely loyal to him, while others were at loggerheads with the coach. Known to rule with an iron fist, Mourinho is charged with bringing Real Madrid's dressing room egos in check, after multiple conflicts and problems marked a troubled season. Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde was treated in hospital after a row with team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni in May, among other flashpoints. Coaches Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa also could not find a way to successfully deploy star players Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham together without destabilising the balance of the team.In an appearance on Spanish television earlier in May, Madrid president Florentino Perez credited Mourinho with laying the groundwork for Real Madrid's last six Champions League titles, achieved in the years after the Portuguese departed. The chief said he would bring back Mourinho if he was reelected president earlier in June, which he was. Mourinho's return to Madrid also signifies a jump back to the European elite after several years away from the game's peak. The coach burst into the limelight as he won the Champions League with Porto in 2004, before helping Chelsea claim back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. Mourinho labelled himself a "special one" as his team dominated the English top flight, before guiding Inter Milan to Champions League glory in 2010 as part of a unique treble for an Italian side. Madrid chief Perez appointed him to try and stop Guardiola's powerful Barca team, which he achieved to an extent, in a fractious spell which also disrupted the harmony in the Spanish national team.Mourinho returned to Chelsea, winning the Premier League in 2015, before modest spells at Manchester United, Tottenham and Roma among other clubs. He won the EFL Cup and Europa League with Manchester United in 2017 and since then has only lifted the Conference League trophy with Roma in 2022. The coach was sacked by Turkish side Fenerbahce in August 2025 after failing to guide them past Benfica in a Champions League qualification play-off, before he was appointed by the Portuguese side the following month.  

France forward ‌Ousmane Dembele has defended captain Kylian Mbappe, saying criticism of the ​Real Madrid striker has ‌become excessive as the national team prepare for the World Cup.Dembele, ‌who has ⁠emerged as a ‌key figure for France at the ‌tournament and is a contender for this year's Ballon d'Or after helping Paris ⁠St Germain win the Champions League, told Spanish newspaper Marca that some commentators had gone too far in their assessment of his long-time teammate.Mbappe remains one of the most scrutinised figures in French football since leaving PSG and joining Real Madrid in 2024.Despite still being a prolific scorer, the France captain came under criticism during a season in which Real failed to ​win either La Liga or the Champions League, while some pundits and supporters have questioned his leadership with the national team since he inherited the captaincy following Hugo ‌Lloris's retirement from international football.Mbappe's ⁠performances, public appearances ​and even minor aspects of his behaviour regularly attract intense debate ​in France."The criticism towards him is very, very unfair," Dembele said before France start their World Cup campaign against Senegal on Tuesday. "Some people go a bit too far with the criticism of Kylian."He's an incredible player and a very good person off the pitch. Some people overdo the criticism because he's Kylian Mbappe. They shouldn't keep going after him. Whether he ties his shoelaces or not, whether he pulls up his socks or not... it's too much. He's still a human being."With the France ‌team, he's very good with ‌us, he's a leader."The pair have ⁠developed a close relationship during their years together with Les Bleus. They ⁠are expected to play central roles ⁠in France's bid for a third World Cup title in the United States, Canada and Mexico.Dembele also paid tribute to coach Didier Deschamps, who has announced that he will step down after the World Cup following more than a decade in charge of the national side."He's simply an exceptional coach," Dembele said. "He will ​forever remain a legend among French national team coaches."Deschamps guided France to World Cup glory in 2018 and another final four years later.Asked about the prospect of former France great Zinedine Zidane succeeding Deschamps, Dembele welcomed the idea."We hope to welcome him one day to the France bench," he said. "I'm convinced he would do a fantastic job."Zidane, who won the World Cup as a player in 1998 and later enjoyed major success coaching Real Madrid, has long ‌been linked with the ​France job but has repeatedly declined to discuss the position while Deschamps remains in charge. 

Alvaro Arbeloa confirmed he would leave his role as Real Madrid coach at the end of a trophyless season. “Yes,” Arbeloa said at a press conference when asked to confirm that he would not be coaching the team next season, amid widespread reports that veteran manager Jose Mourinho is returning to the club. Los Blancos host Athletic Bilbao on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu in their final La Liga match of a turbulent campaign. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez appointed Arbeloa to replace Xabi Alonso in January and he is set to be replaced himself by Portuguese veteran Mourinho. Spaniard Arbeloa said he would not work as a member of Mourinho’s staff if the Portuguese coach is appointed as his successor.“Mou has a fantastic technical team, he’s got good people around him, if he comes to Madrid he will come with his team,” said Arbeloa at a press conference. “There’s no chance that I would be with him. Then, my future... from Monday I’ll think about that.”Arbeloa, who played at Madrid between 2009-2016 and later coached there at youth level said he hoped this match was a “see you later” rather than goodbye. “I hope it’s a see you later... I’ve always considered this my home, I’ve belonged to Madrid for 20 years in various roles,” said Arbeloa.“It will be my last game this season as coach of Real Madrid, I don’t know if it will be the last game of my life as coach of Real Madrid. We never know. I’ll try and enjoy it and try to get the win.” Latest Neuer injury ‘no danger’ for World Cup, say Bayern Manuel Neuer’s latest injury setback will not impact his participation at this summer’s World Cup, Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl insisted. The veteran goalkeeper is not among Bayern’s 21-man squad making the trip to Berlin for Saturday’s German Cup final clash with Stuttgart, having failed to recover from a recurring left calf injury. The 40-year-old made a surprise return to Germany’s World Cup squad on Thursday, coming back two years after announcing his international retirement. And Eberl believes the latest injury will not derail his hopes of playing in a fifth World Cup. Joachim Loew, who coached Germany and Neuer to World Cup glory in Brazil in 2014, backed the decision to bring the veteran back into the fold.“It is a very good decision,” Loew said in Berlin, calling Neuer “a defining personality in the team”. “Manu knows what these tournaments are like. He has experience.” Bundesliga winners in mid-April, Bayern can win a record-extending 14th double by beating Stuttgart in the German capital today.Former Chelsea, Spain defender Azpilicueta retires Former Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta, currently at Sevilla, will retire at the end of the season, he said. The 36-year-old defender, who won two Premier League titles and a Champions League with Chelsea, was capped 44 times by Spain. “After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life,” said Azpilicueta on social media.“I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.” The defender’s final game will be Sevilla’s visit to face Celta Vigo today. Azpilicueta started his career with Osasuna before moving to Marseille in France and then Chelsea in 2012. The Spaniard started his career as a right-back but also played in the centre of defence and on the left, showing great versatility. After more than a decade at Stamford Bridge, where he became the club’s captain, he moved to Atletico Madrid in 2023 and then to Sevilla last summer. 

Julian Alvarez’s penalty secured Atletico Madrid a 1-1 draw against Arsenal in a nervy Champions League semi-final first leg clash. Viktor Gyokeres sent the Premier League leaders ahead from the spot just before the interval after he was fouled, but Alvarez followed suit 10 minutes into the second half after Ben White’s handball. Arsenal were upset at a late penalty decision being overturned following a VAR review when David Hancko made contact with Eberechi Eze in the area. Atletico had the better for long periods but Arsenal’s solid defending helped them leave the Spanish capital in a good position to return to the Champions League final 20 years after their last appearance. “We were the team we have to be, if we play at this level we can win,” said Atletico captain Koke of his team’s second-half display. “From my point of view they didn’t create much danger against us... the team defended well and they just had that penalty.” What the game lacked in the dizzying goal rush of Paris Saint-Germain’s 5-4 win over Bayern Munich in the other semi-final the night before, it replaced with tension and a desperation not to fall behind. Toilet paper rained down from the stands of the Metropolitano stadium minutes before kick-off, in a striking – if wasteful – display, which invited cynical jokes from some quarters about the calibre of the spectacle ahead. In a tussle between arguably the continent’s two biggest teams never to lay a finger on the trophy neither wanted to blink first. Atletico still have an outdated defensive reputation but pinned Mikel Arteta’s miserly Arsenal back in the early stages, with David Raya tipping Alvarez’s shot around the post. The Gunners, a long way from Arteta’s eve-of-the-game demand they dominate proceedings, looked to smash and grab, with Marc Pubill blocking from Martin Odegaard on a quick breakaway. Noni Madueke, starting on Arsenal’s right flank with Bukayo Saka only fit for the bench, hammered just wide from distance as last year’s beaten semi-finalists sporadically emerged from their half. The next time they did, Gyokeres won a penalty. The Swedish striker, who might not have started if Kai Havertz was fit, exchanged passes with Martin Zubimendi and Hancko clumsily shoved him in the back from behind. Diego Simeone and Atletico veteran Antoine Griezmann begged for the decision to be reviewed but VAR saw no reason to intervene. Gyokeres took the spot-kick himself, walloping it past Jan Oblak, who dived the right way but stood no chance of keeping it out. Three-time runners-up Atletico, back in the semi-finals for the first time in nine years, came out guns blazing in the second half. Raya saved Ademola Lookman’s drive with Gabriel blocking Griezmann’s follow-up. The hosts pulled level from the penalty spot after White handled Marcos Llorente’s shot, the ball bouncing up and hitting his arm, which was away from his body. Alvarez took it, and having missed in Atletico’s Copa del Rey final shoot-out defeat earlier in April, this time made no mistake with an unforgiving blast rivalling Gyokeres’s first-half effort. MLS-bound Griezmann looped a shot off the crossbar and then sent the rebound off target as Atletico turned the screw in pursuit of an advantage to take into next Tuesday’s second leg. Nigeria international Lookman twice came close and could end up ruing his missed chances. 

Filipina star Alexandra Eala enjoyed a strong start to her Madrid Open campaign Wednesday, moving past Russian qualifier Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-3 to reach the second round at the event for the third straight year.The 44th-ranked lefty needed one hour and 31 minutes to dismiss Pavlyuchenkova, who was a semi-finalist in the Spanish capital in 2021.The 34-year-old Pavlyuchenkova, a former French Open runner-up currently ranked 116 in the world, is 0-6 in tour-level main draw matches so far this season.Eala saved all four break points she faced and broke Pavlyuchenkova twice in a tightly-contested 54-minute opening set.The 20-year-old phenom briefly lost her advantage in the second set but swept eight points in a row to regain her lead and book a clash with 19th seed Elise Mertens."I feel really great. I love Madrid, it's an amazing tournament," said Eala, who has been training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca for almost eight years."Every time I come here, I feel very comfortable, I feel like I'm at home."Pavlyuchenkova, who was playing with a heavily-strapped right upper thigh, committed close to 40 unforced errors in what was her first meeting with Eala."Every match at this level is a battle, all of us players we fight until the end and she's been on the tour for many years. So I'm really happy with this win. She's a great player and I'm really happy to be in the next round," Eala added.In ATP action at the Caja Magica, 2021 Madrid finalist Matteo Berrettini crashed out to Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic 6-3, 6-4."It's definitely a big thing for me and it's a pleasure to share the court with him," said the 20-year-old former Roland Garros junior champion. Prizmic will next take on American fourth seed Ben Shelton.Meanwhile, former US Open champion Marin Cilic claimed his first Madrid Open win since 2022 with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 performance against world number 44 Zizou Bergs.It was the 37-year-old Croatian's first top-50 victory on clay in four years and it earned him a second-round meeting with Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca. 

World number one Jannik Sinner said Tuesday his principal aim as he prepares for the Madrid Open is to be in the "best possible shape" for Roland Garros next month as he seeks to complete a career Grand Slam.The 24-year-old won his first major title on clay earlier this month as he downed rival Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the Monte Carlo Masters final.Next he turns his attentions to the 1000-level event in Madrid as the clay-court season ramps up towards the only Grand Slam tournament Sinner has not yet won - Roland Garros, which will run from May 24 to June 7."I never played very well here, so let's see how it goes this year," Sinner, who has never got past the quarter-final stage in the Spanish capital, told reporters the day before the Madrid Open begins."I'm trying to improve as a player and here might be one of the most challenging ones because of certain things (altitude and wind)."Despite being heavily favoured to pick up a fifth consecutive Masters title, Sinner revealed that for him "the most important is Roland Garros"."We try to maximise to be in the best possible shape there, but I'm here trying to do my best and then we'll see how it goes," he added.Sinner lost an all-time classic Roland Garros final last year to Alcaraz, despite holding three championship points.But the Italian said he regretted the upcoming absences of the world number two, due to Alcaraz suffering a wrist injury, and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in Madrid."It's a very big pity to not have (Alcaraz) here and also Novak, the two biggest stars in tennis," Sinner said."We have shared since last year a lot of tournaments, but again, in my mind I also know if I want to play against Carlos it's in the final and the way to the final is very long."Top seed Sinner will start his Madrid Open campaign in the second round against a yet to be determined opponent. 

Barcelona have carried their fury beyond the dugout and into UEFA’s inbox, lodging a formal complaint over ‌the officiating in their 2-0 home ​defeat by Atletico Madrid ‌in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. The ‌row centres on ‌an incident early in ‌the second half when Barca appealed for a penalty after Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso appeared to have put the ball back into play from a goal kick before defender Marc Pubill handled it inside the six-yard box to retake it. Referee Istvan Kovacs waved play on and the VAR ​team did not summon him to the monitor, drawing furious reactions from the Barcelona bench. “Barcelona inform that the club ‌legal services have submitted a complaint ​to UEFA today regarding the events in ​the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid,” the club said in an official statement. “The complaint centres around a specific action. In the 54th minute of the match, after play had been restarted correctly, an opponent player picked up the ball in their area without being shown the corresponding penalty,” ‌it added. “Barcelona understand that ‌this decision, along with a grave lack of intervention by VAR, represents a major error. Accordingly, the club has requested an investigation be opened, access to refereeing communications, and where applicable, official acknowledgment of the errors and the adoption of the relevant measures.” Interpretations of similar incidents have varied. In ​the Champions League quarter-finals in April 2024, the referee did not award a penalty to Bayern Munich after Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes touched the ball following what appeared to be a restart from goalkeeper David Raya. Later in 2024, VAR intervened to award Club Brugge a penalty in a comparable exchange ‌involving Aston Villa ​goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and defender Tyrone Mings. After the game, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick tore into the officiating, raging over ‌a second-half penalty call and Pau Cubarsi’s ​red card that left ‌his team a man down before halftime. “I don’t know why VAR hasn’t been used. The referee ... I think he’s brilliant. We all make mistakes, ‌but what’s the point of VAR? I ​just can’t understand it. It should have been ​a penalty, a second yellow and a red card as he already had a booking. This is exactly what shouldn’t happen,” Flick said. Atletico manager Diego Simeone saw it differently. “It’s a matter of common sense,” Simeone told reporters. “The referee saw it as it was. That Marc (Pubill) received what appeared to be a pass from his teammate to ‌start the move, the ‌referee saw it the same way as Marc saw it. Then we can look at as many situations as we like.” Barcelona had already been reduced to 10 men in the 44th minute when Cubarsi was sent off for hauling down Giuliano Simeone as the last man. Julian Alvarez brilliantly curled in the resulting free kick before ​the interval and Alexander Sorloth sealed the win after the break. Flick also questioned the dismissal. “I’m not sure if he made enough contact because the ball was behind him; I’m not entirely sure,” he said. “I don’t know. It might be, or it might not be. I don’t know if he touched him enough. But in other situations, when ‌the ball is ​touched by the hand, it’s very clear to me.” 

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said Kylian Mbappe joined the club to star in key matches like today’s Champions League clash against German giants Bayern Munich. Arbeloa said Mbappe was a vital part of the team, although questions remain over whether record 15-time winners Madrid can strike the right balance with all their biggest names on the pitch at the same time. French superstar Mbappe, the club’s top goalscorer, did not start either game in the last 16 tie against Manchester City which Madrid won impressively, because of a long struggle with a knee sprain. Fit once more, Arbeloa indicated Mbappe was likely to feature along with Vinicius Junior in attack at the Santiago Bernabeu against Bayern in the quarter-final first leg. “I’m delighted to have that kind of problem, to have outstanding players at my disposal and to have a player like Kylian Mbappe, who came to Real Madrid for matches like tomorrow’s and for knockout ties like this one,” Arbeloa told reporters. “I’m sure we’re going to see Kylian at his best, leading the team the way he’s always known how to do, and I have a great deal of confidence in all the players.” England international Jude Bellingham is also finding his way back to fitness after injury and Arbeloa said he would keep betting on the squad’s stars when they are available. Against City young midfielder Thiago Pitarch and attacking midfielder Brahim Diaz played important roles, but they may get less time on the pitch in the Bayern tie. “It’s clear Mbappe has different characteristics and conditions to those Brahim has, so we have to play in a different way, but I’m delighted to have this problem,” said Arbeloa. “Just as you mention Bellingham and other great players I have available, for me it’s a blessing to be able to count on everyone...” he continued. “Having a player like Mbappe in the team is an extraordinary stroke of luck. I don’t know if there’s a coach in the world who wouldn’t want to have him. I put myself in the shoes of the defenders who play against Real Madrid and have to face Mbappe, Vinicius, Valverde, Bellingham... I think they’re some of the best players on the planet.” Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior said he worked well together with Mbappe, despite some believing the fit is not right for Madrid. “People talk a lot... ‘Kyli’ is here to help us, he’s always given us confidence, he scores the goals for us, we have to be connected tomorrow, above all with the fans and all the players,” he told reporters. “It’s a difficult game where the best players make the difference, and Kyli is one of those. I have an incredible connection with him, not just on the pitch but off it too.” Vinicius pledged Madrid will be at their best against Bayern Munich after a poor showing in La Liga on Saturday, when they lost 2-1 against Mallorca, leaving them seven points adrift of leaders Barcelona. “There are days where we are more connected or less connected, and that happened against Mallorca,” explained the forward. “We had come from the international break and today, as the coach said, if we’re not at 200 percent, we’re not going to win games. I hope we are tomorrow, because it’s an important day for us.”The winger, who has become a leading figure in the fight against racism, also spoke about the Islamophobic chanting at Spain’s friendly against Egypt last week, which Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal criticised. “It’s important that Lamine speaks and that can help people,” said Vinicius, who claimed he was racially abused by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni in a Champions League match in February, which the Argentine denies. “I’m not saying Spain, Germany or Portugal are racist countries, but there are racists in these countries, especially in Brazil too, in a lot of countries there are racists. But if we continue this fight together, I think that in the future new players don’t have to suffer these things and above all, people in general too.”

Vedat Muriqi snatched Mallorca a surprise 2-1 La Liga win over Real Madrid Saturday to deal Los Blancos a significant blow in the Spanish title race.Alvaro Arbeloa's side thought they had rescued a point after Eder Militao nodded home with two minutes remaining before Muriqi pounced in stoppage time to help the hosts climb to 17th. The defeat leaves second-place Real Madrid four points behind leaders Barcelona, who were visiting Atletico Madrid late last night"For me it is easy to see but the hard thing is for the players to know that without giving 200 percent today, we were not going to win," Arbeloa told reporters. "We were on top in the first half but because of one mistake, they scored. Here if you slip up for a moment... you end up paying the price. This is the elite, the top flight... not having a better second half than we did is what hurts me the most."Arbeloa started the game with Vinicius Junior on the bench, with Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich in mind. Madrid lacked spark in the first half, creating few openings of note. The best was for top scorer Kylian Mbappe, fit after a knee sprain that has troubled him for months.Arda Guler rolled a ball in behind Mallorca's defence for the French superstar to dart on to but Leo Roman saved with his leg. The goalkeeper denied Mbappe again after Eduardo Camavinga fed him and Antonio Rudiger also nodded over from a corner.Manu Morlanes threatened for Mallorca, heading just over, but Madrid did not heed the warning. The midfielder opened the scoring a few minutes later, losing Camavinga and arriving into the box to fire Pablo Maffeo's cross into the bottom corner past Andriy Lunin.Leo Roman saved from Mbappe early in the second half as Madrid searched for an equaliser. Arbeloa sent on Vinicius, Jude Bellingham and Militao for his first appearance since December after injury. Madrid huffed and puffed but to little avail as Martin Demichelis's Mallorca stayed solid at the back until the final stages.They were eventually undone by Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner, whipped towards Militao, who powered a header into the top corner.However there was a sting in the tail for Madrid. Muriqi, second top scorer in the division behind Mbappe with 19 goals, lashed past Lunin in the 91st minute to claim three points for his side.The striker was visibly emotional after scoring, having missed a penalty in the team's previous game, a defeat by relegation-battling rivals Elche. "It's been two difficult weeks... emotions and nerves get the better of me, I'm human," said Muriqi, who also missed out on World Cup qualification with Kosovo in a play-off against Turkey. "Many thanks to the fans for the enormous support and everything you've given me. I hope we can stay in the top flight."Mallorca climbed two points clear of the drop zone after recording a famous victory, which the players celebrated gleefully with the fans at the end. "I've really wanted the boys to feel joy like this," said Demichelis. "It doesn't mean we are safe, but they needed it, we kept taking blows. The boys were beaten down but training very well."
