Araujo header scrapes Liga leaders Barcelona win over Rayo

Ronald Araujo's header helped Barcelona extend their lead on Real Madrid at the top of La Liga to seven points with a tight 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano Sunday.Alvaro Arbeloa's Real Madrid host Atletico Madrid, fourth, later on in a derby clash.Araujo nodded home Joao Cancelo's corner after 24 minutes to secure the three points at Camp Nou but goalkeeper Joan Garcia's superb display played just as big a part in their victory."We knew how important it was to get this win before the international break, we did it, but it's true we suffered more than we would have liked," Garcia told DAZN."They knew how to cause us damage and we weren't at the level we have been with the ball above all."We knew we had to win and what the other teams do is not up to us."Hansi Flick's side were caught snoozing in the opening stages but Garcia made a fine save to deny Carlos Martin from close range.Called up by Luis de la Fuente to the Spanish national team for the first time ahead of March's upcoming friendlies, Garcia made several excellent saves to keep Rayo at bay, with the Madrid side dominant in the second half.At the other end, Raphinha was guilty of profligate finishing on numerous occasions. The winger scuffed wide after picking Pathe Ciss's pocket and charging through on goal.A few minutes later Ciss appeared to bring down teenage star Lamine Yamal in the area but the Barcelona player's appeals were ignored by the referee.Yamal's superb cross, with the outside of his boot, created another fine chance for Raphinha but the Brazilian's mis-hit effort was tipped over by Augusto Batalla.The champions took the lead through Araujo's header from Joao Cancelo's corner midway through the first half.Araujo has not featured much since taking a mental health break late last year, but came on as a substitute in Barca's 7-2 Champions League rout of Newcastle in midweek.With Eric Garcia rested following a muscle overload, Flick started the Uruguayan at right-back and was rewarded with what proved to be the winner."I feel very good, physically well, it's important that I can help the team," said Araujo."I'm in a good rhythm, working hard to be able to support where I have to, I'm always ready to help the team."Barca cling onThe Catalans came close to a second after the interval but Yamal dragged a low effort across the face of goal.Inigo Perez's Rayo took control and started generating dangerous chances as they searched for an equaliser.Joan Garcia denied Alvaro Garcia and then produced a spectacular save to push away Unai Lopez's header.Pacha Espino should have pulled the visitors level but, after beating Barca's high defensive line and staying onside, curled over the bar.Garcia pushed away a Jorge de Frutos drive before six minutes of stoppage time were added but Barca clung on to triumph."This is why we bought him," said Flick. "I know how important he is and how (important) his performance today was."The Barca coach had lots of praise for Rayo coach Perez after his team's impressive display."We didn't play our best game but we have to say Rayo played a fantastic game, congrats -- Inigo made a fantastic job," added Flick."His team played really great football, a great style, it's really amazing to see this and I'm really happy for him."Perez's side are 14th and fighting to stay clear of the relegation zone while also playing in the UEFA Conference League."The second half was perfect but we lacked the goal," Perez. "(Joan Garcia) appeared in the key moments when we might have been able to draw."Later on, Alaves produced a sensational comeback from three goals down to beat Celta Vigo 4-3. Quique Sanchez Flores's team climbed to 16th, three points above the relegation zone.Ferran Jutgla struck either side of Hugo Alvarez's goal as Celta, sixth, racked up a seemingly comfortable lead.However, Toni Martinez pulled one back before the interval to spark Alaves's comeback.Angel Perez added another before Martinez scored again to level and Abde Rebbach cut in from the left and fired home to claim a memorable victory for the visitors.

Molina stunner seals derby victory for Simeone’s side

Atletico Madrid scraped a 1-0 win over Getafe in La Liga Saturday, with the visitors reduced to 10 men when Abdel Abqar was sent off for touching Alexander Sorloth in a sensitive area.Nahuel Molina’s thunderbolt from distance helped third-place Atletico cut the gap to the top two, but the bizarre incident early in the second half involving Getafe defender Abqar was the biggest talking point. The Moroccan, who insisted he did not mean to touch the Atletico striker’s crotch, appeared to pinch the Norwegian, who threw him to the floor angrily. “It was not my intention to touch the player in this area,” Abqar, who was dismissed after a VAR review, told Movistar. “You see it in very game, and in football, we’re touching, clashing and everything, but I never thought about touching him in that area... “I don’t know what the referee saw but you can see it clearly and I swear that I never thought about touching him there.” Abqar explained he was trying to touch Sorloth’s stomach, “as you do sometimes to know where your opponent is”. Atletico coach Diego Simeone rotated his line-up ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League last 16 second leg trip to Tottenham, but was still able to secure a sixth win in the last seven matches across all competitions. The Rojiblancos, third, moved within six points of second-place Real Madrid, who host Elche later on. League leaders Barca, fourth points clear of Los Blancos, host Sevilla Sunday. Defender Molina’s superb strike, lashed into the top corner from over 25 yards out after eight minutes, was enough to split the teams at Atletico’s Metropolitano stadium. It was a more taxing clash than their rollicking 5-2 victory over Tottenham in midweek. Sorloth could have doubled Atletico’s lead but nodded Alex Baena’s cross against the post at the end of a razor-sharp counter-attack. Getafe’s afternoon took a turn for the worse 10 minutes into the second half when Abqar was dismissed for seeming to grab at Sorloth’s groin. “These are things that happened 30 years ago, the referee was right to sent him off,” said Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso. “Before you could do this (in football), now there is no place for these things.” Despite Atletico’s numerical advantage the visitors had the better of the second half and created good chances to equalise. Mauro Arambarri fired narrowly over when in on goal and Musso made a fine late save to push away Adrian Liso’s header in stoppage time.

Villarreal down Elche to stay on Atletico's tail

Villarreal beat Elche 2-1 to keep pace with Atletico Madrid in the battle for third in La Liga. After Atletico, third, beat Real Sociedad on Saturday, Marcelino Garcia Toral's Yellow Submarine, fourth, pulled level on 54 points.Tajon Buchanan and Santiago Mourino's first-half goals were reward for a dominant performance by Villarreal, although Andre Silva pulled one back late on to make the hosts sweat. "We relaxed a bit, until the 70th minute we were dominating the game, then we suffered until the end and that can't happen," Mourino said.Villarreal had a host of chances in the first half but Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro made several good saves to keep Nicolas Pepe and Georges Mikautadze at bay. Elche started the season superbly but are yet to win in 2026 or away from home across the campaign and have slumped to 17th, one point above the drop zone. "I think with a bit more time we could have got level, we finished in the way we should have played the whole game," said Silva. "After letting in the first goal the team dropped in morale and we can't do that."Real Betis, fifth, fell further behind in the race for Champions League football with a 2-0 defeat at Getafe. Manuel Pellegrini's side now trail Villarreal by 11 points with 11 matches remaining.Kiko Femenia and Martin Satriano netted for Getafe in a good week for Jose Bordalas's side, who beat Real Madrid on Monday at the Santiago Bernabeu.Later Sevilla host Rayo Vallecano and Alaves visit Valencia.Sumptuous Yamal strike gives Barca win in Bilbao and four-point leadOn Saturday, La Liga leaders Barcelona restored their four-point on Real Madrid at the top of the table with a 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao. Lamine Yamal struck a superb second-half winner to earn his side a hard-fought victory.In the wake of Barca's Spanish ‌Cup semi-final exit against visitors Atletico Madrid on Thursday, and ‌with one eye on Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first leg at ‌Newcastle United, coach Hansi Flick shuffled his pack and watched his side labour through a disjointed first half in Bilbao.Athletic created the better chances but were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who produced a string of fine saves to help the visitors stay on level terms and underlined his growing importance this season.Flick introduced Raphinha, Pedri and Robert Lewandowski midway through the second half and the breakthrough came in the 68th minute. Pedri released Yamal inside the box running from the right channel and the 18-year-old curled a left-footed shot into the top corner ‌to silence the home crowd. Barcelona top the standings with 67 points after 27 games ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, who won 2-1 at Celta Vigo on Friday, while Athletic are ninth with 35 points.

Real Madrid will 'keep fighting' in title race, vows Arbeloa

Real Madrid will "keep fighting" as long as they mathematically have a chance of winning La Liga, after slipping four points behind Barcelona, under-pressure coach Alvaro Arbeloa said. Los Blancos visit Celta Vigo today, hoping to move back within one point of Barcelona ahead of the reigning champions' match at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.Madrid lost their lead at the top of the table with a defeat at Osasuna a fortnight ago, before being humbled at home by Getafe last weekend to increase the scrutiny on Arbeloa. "We're four points behind, not 18. This is Real Madrid. As long as we can mathematically fight, we will, and if there ever comes a time when we can no longer fight, we will still keep fighting," said Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso as coach in January."In the dressing room, we're aware that there's still a lot of the season left. We've had two consecutive league defeats. Of course, at a club like Real Madrid, defeat is always difficult to handle because of the expectations and the pressure, but right now the only thing we're thinking about is tomorrow's match."Madrid have been hit badly by injuries in recent weeks. Brazilian winger Rodrygo Goes joined Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Eder Militao on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury against Getafe which will likely see him miss the World Cup in the summer. Centre-back Dean Huijsen will also sit out the game at Celta through suspension.Real Madrid host Manchester City in their Champions League last-16 first leg next Wednesday. Mbappe has travelled to Paris for treatment on his knee injury and Bellingham is in London, with both hoping to recover in time to face City. Arbeloa said that any decisions about the players' fitness would be taken "by the medical services of Real Madrid".Real Sociedad set up Copa del Rey final against Atletico MadridReal Sociedad will face Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey final after a ‌1-0 win over Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao ‌on Wednesday sealed a 2-0 ‌aggregate semi-final ‌victory. Captain Mikel Oyarzabal ‌settled a tight contest at the Reale Arena with a spot kick in the 87th minute after referee Cesar Soto Grado reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor.Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta was penalised for pulling Yangel Herrera's shirt at a corner and Oyarzabal fired his effort ‌to the keeper's left as he dived the other way.La Real controlled possession for much of the match but struggled to turn their dominance into clear chances, managing four shots on target.Athletic, without injured winger Nico Williams, rarely threatened the home side until they tried to ‌make a desperate ‌run late in the second half as they exited the competition.The final will be played at Seville's La Cartuja stadium on April 18, when La Real and Atletico meet in the Spanish Cup showpiece for the second time. The Basque side won their previous final showdown on penalties in 1987 after a 2-2 draw following extra time. They lifted the trophy again in 2020. Harry Kane will miss Bayern Munich's Bundesliga match against Borussia Moenchengladbach today with a calf injury, coach Vincent Kompany said. The England striker, who has been an ever-present for Bayern this season, should be fit in time for the Champions League last-16 first leg at Atalanta next Tuesday.Bayern took a big step towards defending their Bundesliga title last weekend with a comeback 3-2 win at closest challengers Borussia Dortmund to open up an 11-point lead. Kane scored twice in that match to take his tally in all competitions this season to 45 goals.

Sevilla rescue derby draw to deal Betis top four setback

Sevilla came from two goals down to snatch a thrilling 2-2 derby draw against Real Betis Sunday in La Liga. Isaac Romero thumped home from outside the box in the 85th minute to salvage his side a point at Betis’s temporary La Cartuja home. The draw leaves Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis fifth, eight points behind Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, in third and fourth respectively, hampering their hopes of Champions League qualification. Former Manchester United winger Antony sent the hosts ahead in the 16th minute with an acrobatic overhead kick after the ball fell for him in the box. Midfielder Alvaro Fidalgo tucked home the second before half-time when Ez Abde, who was also involved in the opener, played him in. Veteran Chile forward Alexis Sanchez pulled one back for Sevilla, 11th, after the hour mark with an angled header. It set up an exciting finale and Romero finally got the goal Sevilla craved, drilling home from just outside the box to level. Abde almost fired Betis back in front but struck the post with three minutes to go and Akor Adams had a shot cleared off the line at the other end. Earlier Elche grabbed a 2-2 draw against Espanyol in a match which was tarnished by an incident of alleged racism. Moroccan Espanyol defender Omar El Hilali accused Elche forward Rafa Mir of telling him that he “came here on a dinghy”, according to the referee’s report. Largie Ramazani earned Valencia a 1-0 win over Osasuna from the penalty spot to help them climb to 14th, five points above the relegation zone. On Saturday, Julian Alvarez struck in the 94th minute to snatch Atletico Madrid a 1-0 La Liga win over bottom side Real Oviedo and help his team climb to third. The Argentine striker secured Diego Simeone’s side only their second win in five league games with his first league goal in nearly four months. The Rojiblancos had an eye on Tuesday’s Copa del Rey semi-final second leg at Barcelona on Tuesday, where they hold a 4-0 advantage, and were extremely fortunate to emerge with three points. After La Liga leaders Barcelona beat Villarreal, fourth, 4-1 earlier on, Atletico capitalised to pull level with the Yellow Submarine on 51 points. “They are fighting for their lives, they played a great game, it was a good game for the fans, a very open game,” Atletico defender Robin Le Normand told Movistar. “We knew how to hold on and then with the quality we have up front, we got the goal.” Atletico started well in the opening minutes but faded and Oviedo created the greater danger in the first half, with Atletico stopper Jan Oblak saving well from Ilyas Chaira and Alberto Reina. The Slovenia goalkeeper denied Federico Vinas in the second half, with Atletico improving in the final stages and taking control.

Barcelona back top of La Liga with Levante win

Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 victory over Levante to reclaim pole position in La Liga Sunday.After Real Madrid fell to a 2-1 defeat at Osasuna on Saturday, Hansi Flick's side moved a point clear of their bitter rivals with a comfortable victory at Camp Nou against the team in 19th.Marc Bernal and Frenkie de Jong gave Barca a commanding first-half lead and Fermin Lopez wrapped up the win with a sensational drive late on.Barcelona were glad to get back to winning ways after a 4-0 thrashing by Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg last week and then a 2-1 defeat by Girona on Monday in La Liga."It was a really bad moment for us but in the end today we gave a good response," Flick told reporters."It's important now to be on top of the table but in the end there's a long way to go."Despite Flick's calls for improvement in defence, Barca were as open as ever, although Levante's poor finishing meant they could not capitalise.Bernal sent Barca ahead after good work by Joao Cancelo, who impressed on a rare start after his arrival on loan in January, and Eric Garcia.It was Bernal's second goal since returning from a long-term knee injury, which kept the 18-year-old out of action for over a year."I thought of my father (in my celebration) and my physio - he told me I would score and he has helped me a lot in this process," Bernal told Movistar.Veteran Polish forward Robert Lewandowski could have doubled Barca's advantage but fired into the ground and over the bar when well placed.Cancelo hit the post with a cross aimed at Lewandowski, before the Portuguese defender carved out the second for De Jong with a similar ball in from the left.De Jong delivered the finishing touch to give Barca a two-goal lead at the break."Joao today he showed his strength, his positive things, he gave us a lot of moments, great chances, for me it was a really good game from him and this is what I want to see," said Flick.Lopez rocketGarcia should have expanded Barcelona's advantage early in the second half but nodded wide from Jules Kounde's tempting cross.Eventually substitute Lopez got a spectacular third, rattling home a long-range effort in off the post.The midfielder might have added a fourth late on but Levante goalkeeper Mathew Ryan denied him with an excellent reflex save, after first thwarting Raphinha.Flick was able to bring back midfielder Pedri as a substitute after a month out with a hamstring injury, with the Spaniard likely to be key in the testing weeks ahead.Defeat leaves Levante seven points from safety."In the first half we had some chances that, if we put them away, could have got them to doubt themselves," said Levante midfielder Carlos Alvarez."If we'd have gone in front, who knows what could have happened."Earlier Sevilla earned a 1-0 win at Getafe, while third-placed Villarreal host Valencia later on.

Barcelona reclaimed top spot in La Liga with a 3-0 win over Real Oviedo Sunday, thanks to goals from Dani Olmo, Raphinha and an acrobatic Lamine Yamal effort.After Real Madrid beat Villarreal on Saturday to take pole position overnight, the Catalans edged a point ahead again.Although Oviedo are bottom of the table with just two victories all season, Barca had to scrap for their victory as the visitors worked hard defensively to keep Hansi Flick's team at bay until the second half.Eventually the hosts' quality told at the partially-reopened Camp Nou and after Olmo opened the scoring Barca never looked back.The pick of the goals was Yamal's strike, an impressive volley from Olmo's cross to secure Barca's triumph."I know we didn't play on our highest level in the first half... but the team has done a fantastic job in the last few weeks, months," Flick told DAZN.The coach praised Yamal for his hard work in terms of pressing and also hailed his fine strike."It was great... I'm happy that he scored such a (good) goal, and the third goal for us was really important," added Flick.Barca struggled to make inroads in a dry first half and their passing was unusually imprecise.Injured midfield maestro Pedri Gonzalez watched on from the stands with an unimpressed expression.Oviedo sought to attack on the counter and Haissem Hassan drew a save from Joan Garcia from long distance.At the other end, Aaron Escandell made a fine stop at his near post to thwart Raphinha before half-time.Barca came out with renewed energy for the second half and soon took the lead.After Yamal and Raphinha pressed in the box the ball broke loose to Olmo, who steered home.Oviedo gave away a poor second goal after 57 minutes, with Raphinha running on to an undercooked back-pass from David Costas and lofting the ball over Escandell.Barcelona's third was expertly taken by Yamal, as Olmo's cross was falling behind him he produced an eye-catching sideways scissor-kick to wrap up the victory.A huge downpour hit the stadium, sending fans scurrying as there is no roof yet, and those who remained saw Escandell deny Robert Lewandowski a potential fourth with a fine save."I think we were not at our best in the first half, (but) in the second we could score the goals and that is the most important thing," said Raphinha.

Bellingham claims Liga leaders Real Madrid Clasico win over Barca

Jude Bellingham's goal helped Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 to win a tense Clasico and move five points clear of their bitter rivals at the top of La Liga on Sunday.Champions Barcelona won all four times the teams were pitted against each other last season but in his first Clasico as Real Madrid coach, Xabi Alonso snapped that run.Kylian Mbappe, who later missed a penalty, fired Madrid in front and although Fermin Lopez levelled for the visitors at the Santiago Bernabeu, Bellingham netted a second for the hosts before half-time which proved decisive.Barca playmaker Pedri was sent off in the final stages for a second yellow card as tensions spilled over in the Spanish capital.Madrid's victory means they have won nine of their opening 10 league games and Alonso's side proved against Barca they can triumph on the big occasion, following their derby humbling by Atletico Madrid in September.Hansi Flick's team were led on the touchline by his assistant Marcus Sorg, as the German coach was suspended following a red card last weekend as they scraped a victory over relegation-battling Girona.Barcelona were without several regular starters, including Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo among others, while Lamine Yamal still does not appear fully fit after a groin injury but started. The teenager wound up Madrid fans in the week by claiming Los Blancos "steal" and "complain" and his name was greeted with a chorus of jeers when read out before kick-off.Barcelona had more of the ball in the first half but it was largely sterile possession and Madrid created the most dangerous opportunities. The hosts were awarded an early penalty when Yamal appeared to bring down Vinicius Junior. However it was cancelled after a VAR review as it was the Brazilian initiated the contact.Madrid fans' ire at the officials grew when Mbappe blasted home from outside the area but the goal was ruled out for a milimetric offside against the French superstar.Mbappe did not have long to wait before he could celebrate in earnest, after superb work by Bellingham sent him through on goal. The forward, the division's top goalscorer, netted his 11th league goal of the campaign with a lethal low finish past Wojciech Szczesny. The goalkeeper made a good save from Dean Huijsen while Bellingham and Fede Valverde went close as Madrid took control.Szczesny stopped efforts from Vinicius and Bellingham again, and it was against the run of play when Barcelona equalised.Arda Guler gave away possession in a dangerous area and Marcus Rashford, playing in his first Clasico, crossed for Lopez to blast the visitors level in the 38th minute.Bellingham struck Madrid's second five minutes later to give Los Blancos a deserved advantage at the interval. The England international, who scored his first goal at the Bernabeu since April in midweek against Juventus, gleefully tapped home after Eder Militao nodded Vinicius's cross back into his path.Mbappe penalty savedMadrid should have extended their lead at the start of the second half but Szczesny made a fine save to push out Mbappe's penalty, after Eric Garcia was penalised for handball.Yamal, frustrated and struggling to make an impact on the game, sent a long-range shot high over the bar as Madrid closed ranks and kept the Catalans at a safe distance from their goal.Madrid looked the more threatening in the final stages despite Barca needing to score, able to bring on Rodrygo Goes and Brahim Diaz, while Barca had little in the way of attacking reinforcements.Sorg sent defender Ronald Araujo up front during nine minutes of stoppage time after he netted the winner as a makeshift striker against Girona, but the centre-back could not trouble Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.Pedri was sent off in the final seconds for a second yellow card for a late foul on Aurelien Tchouameni, sparking a brief sideline shoving match, while players from both sides rowed after the final whistle.

Alonso hails prolific Mbappe ahead of Juventus clash

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso praised Kylian Mbappe for his stellar form this season, as the French forward tops both the La Liga and Champions League scoring charts ahead of Wednesday's home clash with Juventus. Mbappe, 26, who joined Real from Paris St Germain last season, has scored 10 goals in nine LaLiga matches and five in two Champions League appearances, alongside three goals for the French national team this term. His form has helped Real make a strong start under Alonso, winning 10 of their 11 games across all competitions. The Spanish side lead LaLiga with 24 points, two ahead of Barcelona, and have secured maximum points in the Champions League. "It's not just the goals," Alonso told reporters. "His influence is almost as important in terms of his teammates following him with and without the ball. He's helping us. He's scored goals everywhere. The influence, as well as the goals, is what the team needs." Real face a struggling Juve side who have not won in more than a month and sit seventh in the Serie A standings, four points behind leaders AC Milan. However, Alonso warned against taking the Italians lightly. "We're on alert for Juve tomorrow. Any Italian team that's struggling can be dangerous. We must not forget history. Juve are a big club, both now and in the past. They have some very good players," he said. "It's a European classic. They have faced each other many times, and I’ve played in some of those games. We feel very prepared. We want our third Champions League victory and to get off to a great start. We need the stadium. People go to the Bernabeu wanting to see big games. We have to give them what they want so that they respond in kind." Courtois slams La Liga over plans for Barca-Villarreal Miami match Meanwhile, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has launched a scathing attack on LaLiga and its President Javier Tebas, criticising the decision to stage Barcelona's away match with Villarreal in Miami on December 20, saying it "distorts the competition”. The game, set to take place at the Hard Rock Stadium, would be the first La Liga fixture held outside Spain and the first European league match staged abroad. While European governing body UEFA reluctantly approved the plan, Real Madrid and other LaLiga teams' players have expressed their opposition, with Courtois leading the charge. Speaking at a press conference on the eve of Real’s Champions League clash with visiting Juventus, Courtois accused La Liga of bypassing clubs in the decision-making process and argued that the move undermines the principles of fairness in the home-and-away league format. "LaLiga does whatever it wants because it suits them,” Courtois said. "This decision distorts the competition. Playing at home is not the same as playing away. In LaLiga, playing away is very difficult, as we saw against Real Sociedad and Getafe. Villarreal away is tough. It’s not fair to change the rules mid-season without consulting us.” Courtois also contrasted La Liga’s plans with the NBA and NFL, who regularly play matches abroad. "The NBA has 82 games, and the NFL’s owners collectively approve these decisions. Here, La Liga acts unilaterally. It’s not the same,” he said. Over the weekend, La Liga players staged silent protests by standing motionless at kickoffs across all matches, symbolising their discontent. However, La Liga’s broadcasts ignored the protests in several games, showing a wide, aerial shot of the stadiums accompanied by a banner that read "Commitment to peace", which LaL iga has been using due to the war in Gaza, an attitude that prompted further criticism from Courtois. "Hiding the protests and trying to change the narrative is censorship and manipulation,” Courtois said. "I’m not surprised. (Tebas) behaves like no other sports executive I’ve ever seen. His actions on social media and in public speak volumes.” Real Madrid, who opposed the decision as early as August, have filed two complaints with Spain’s Sports Ministry, arguing that the move undermines the league’s competitive integrity. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone also weighed in on the controversy, expressing his scepticism over the Miami fixture. "I won’t believe it until I see it,” he told reporters. "The home team loses the advantage. Their fans won’t be there, and they have to travel thousands of miles. We need to respect the fans.” La Liga has repeatedly defended its plan to stage matches abroad, stating that the proposal "does not distort competition or violate any rights of players, clubs or fans". However, with the match now scheduled for Miami, the stage is set for further tension between the league and its players.

Mbappe scores again to send Real top in nervy 1-0 win at Getafe

Mbappe keeps on scoringReal take back top spot from BarcaGetafe finish game with nine menKylian Mbappe continued his impressive scoring streak as his 10th goal in nine league games earned Real Madrid a 1-0 win at Getafe on Sunday and sent his side back to the top of the LaLiga in a game where the hosts finished with nine men.Real struggled to find a way past a stubborn Getafe until Allan Nyom was sent off 13 minutes from time, one minute after coming off the bench, and Mbappe scored three minutes later.Alex Sancris was then sent off for a second booking before the end.Real are on 24 points, two ahead of Barcelona and the top two will go head-to-head in next Sunday's El Clasico. Getafe are 12th in the standings on 11 points.Real coach Xabi Alonso continued his habit of rotating the starting side, leaving both Vinicius Jr and Arda Guler on the bench while handing Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo rare starts. The game began with both sets of players standing still for 15 seconds, part of a protest organised by the Spanish Footballers' Association over LaLiga's decision to play December's match between Villarreal and Barcelona in the United States. In reality, the match took even longer to get going.Mbappe was a constant threat in the opening half, taking his side into the opposition area, but his own teammates often appeared to be operating on different wavelengths. Aurelien Tchouameni's shot from distance went narrowly over and on the stroke of halftime David Alaba's powerful free kick was parried away by the keeper with Federico Valverde's follow-up effort well off target.Getafe spent most of the opening half keeping Real at bay, but Sancris volleyed narrowly wide shortly before the break to fire a warning shot. With Real no closer to finding the net, Vinicius replaced the unimpressive Franco Mastantuono 10 minutes after the interval and Guler made his entrance after another uneventful 10 minutes.Nyom saw red for a foul on Vinicius and Real wasted little time in taking advantage. When Guler's defence-splitting pass found Mbappe with his back to goal, the French forward turned, took the ball into the area and smashed his shot past David Soria.Mbappe, who has also scored five in two Champions League games, and keeper Thibaut Courtois are the two players Alonso cannot do without this season, and Courtois denied Abu Kamara in added time to deny Getafe an equaliser. Before the top of the table clash with Barcelona, Real host Juventus on Wednesday in the Champions League.

Barca claim lead after Araujo’s late derby winner

Barcelona moved top of La Liga Saturday after Ronald Araujo struck deep in stoppage time to snatch the champions a 2-1 win over Girona. The defender, sent on as an emergency forward, netted in the 93rd minute to give Barca a one-point lead on Real Madrid, who visit Getafe Sunday. Elsewhere, Antony struck twice for Real Betis, fourth, to secure them a 2-2 comeback draw at third-place Villarreal. Following two consecutive defeats Hansi Flick’s Barca were only just able to edge Girona, 19th, thanks to Araujo’s late goal. Pedri Gonzalez slotted Barcelona ahead early on but Axel Witsel equalised with a superb overhead kick for a Girona side who came close to securing a deserved point. “We didn’t play our best match but we fought to the end and we scored that goal – it will give us confidence for the next matches, at least this is what I hope,” said Barca coach Flick. Flick brought Lamine Yamal back into the starting line-up after he recovered from the groin injury which kept him out of Spain’s recent World Cup qualifiers. The teenage winger also missed the 4-1 thrashing by Sevilla in Barcelona’s last La Liga outing, which the Catalans were only just able to bounce back from. With several players, including striker Robert Lewandowski out injured, Flick handed a league debut to 17-year-old forward Toni Fernandez. In line with the protest organised by the Spanish footballers’ association against Barca’s match against Villarreal in December which has been moved to Miami, both sets of players stood still for 15 seconds after the whistle blew for kick-off. Barca took the initiative and earned a 13th-minute lead after Jules Kounde and Yamal combined well, allowing midfielder Pedri to casually pass into the bottom right corner. Girona, who finished in the top four two seasons ago but have struggled ever since, soon found a way back level. Witsel produced a stunning overhead kick to equalise in the 20th minute and shock the hosts. The visitors broke behind Barcelona’s high line several times to create danger. Cristian Portu struck the post after getting in behind Barca’s defence and Girona spurned two more one-on-ones. Marcus Rashford struck the crossbar with a free-kick at the other end as a warning to the minnows. Flick made a surprising double change, withdrawing star players Yamal and Pedri despite chasing the game, with Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Olympiakos in mind, as well as next weekend’s Clasico. Paulo Gazzaniga made an excellent save at his near post to thwart Rashford, who also had a penalty appeal waved away.Flick sent on centre-back Araujo as a striker in the final stages in desperation and the Uruguayan delivered deep in stoppage time, finishing off Frenkie de Jong’s cross to snatch three points. Araujo ripped off his shirt in celebration as Barca claimed a victory which seemed improbable after a flat second-half display. “At the moment we’re leading the table so it’s a good situation, Real Madrid have to win tomorrow,” said Flick. “We are missing the dynamic we normally have... I miss this a little bit... we needed this goal and this victory today.” Flick was sent off in the final stages for dissent and is set for a touchline ban at the Santiago Bernabeu next weekend, and perhaps beyond after he made a gesture viewed as uncouth in Spain as he celebrated Araujo’s goal. Girona were left licking their wounds after a fifth defeat of the campaign. “We feel that we played a great game... (but) we had four or five clear chances and should have scored more to kill the game,” Witsel said. “It’s hard mentally to let in a goal like that, but we have to think about the first half (we played)... and keep that in mind for our next match.” Atletico Madrid host Osasuna later Saturday aiming to pull level on points with Betis. Former Manchester United winger Antony’s brace helped the Andalusians peg back Villarreal from two goals down, leaving the Yellow Submarine five points behind Barca and one ahead of Betis.

UEFA ‘reluctantly’ approves European league games in US and Australia

UEFA on Monday said it had “reluctantly” approved the staging of a La Liga and a Serie A match in the United States and Australia respectively despite fan protests.“While it is regrettable to have to let these two games go ahead, this decision is exceptional and shall not be seen as setting a precedent,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said in a statement.UEFA made its ruling after Spain’s La Liga agreed to move a game scheduled for late December between champions Barcelona and Villarreal to Miami, Florida. Italy’s Serie A also decided to stage the encounter between AC Milan and Como on February 8 in Perth, Australia, to avoid a clash with the Winter Olympics opening ceremony at Milan’s San Siro stadium. But that sparked protests from European supporters groups who branded the moves “absurd, unaffordable, and environmentally irresponsible”.In its statement, UEFA said that it had “reiterated its clear opposition to domestic league matches being played outside their home country”.But despite “the widespread lack of support that had already been raised by fans, other leagues, clubs, players and European institutions”, UEFA said that it had found no clear regulatory framework in FIFA’s statutes that would allow it to oppose the moves. “The UEFA Executive Committee has reluctantly taken the decision to approve, on an exceptional basis, the two requests referred to it,” European football’s governing body said in its statement. While the idea of relocating European football matches to other continents seems shocking to many, other sports - particularly US ones - have been doing something similar for years, even decades. The NFL has held games in London since 2007 while it also expanded to Mexico and Germany. Last year it added a game in Sao Paulo and this year there has been one in Dublin for the first time. Another is slated for Madrid in November while Melbourne will play host to a game in 2026.The NBA, which has relocated regular-season matches since 1990 to Japan and since 2013 to Europe, has already scheduled six games in Berlin, London, Manchester and Paris over the next three seasons. In rugby union, the French Top 14 club competition took its 2016 final to Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium, while Ireland and New Zealand played an international match in Chicago that same year - with Ireland claiming their first ever victory over the All Blacks.Last weekend, Argentina played their final Rugby Championship match at home to South Africa at Twickenham in London. It is not unheard of in football to host matches abroad, but until now those had only ever been glorified friendlies.
