South Africa beat Zimbabwe by 48 runs to lift Tri-Series trophy

Opener Jordan Hermann scored 53 from 29 balls as South Africa claimed the Tri-Series trophy with a 48-run victory over Zimbabwe in the final in Windhoek, Namibia on Sunday.South Africa, who have rested most of their regulars for the series, opted to bat first and posted 205 for five in their 20 overs.They had Zimbabwe in trouble early in the reply as they slipped to 24 for four, before eventually being bowled out for 157 in 18 overs.Hermann and Connor Esterhuizen (32 from 23 balls) put on 84 for the first South African wicket in 47 balls, while there were also contributions from Dewald Brevis (32 from 23 balls) and Jordan's brother Rubin Hermann (27 from 16 balls).Hermann, the Player of the Match, said on Sunday: "Good performance from us. Great cup to bring back home. Always wish the best for him (brother Rubin) and he does for me as well. No competition between us."South Africa spinner Bjorn Fortuin (3-24 in four overs) and Duan Jansen (3-38 in three overs), brother of South Africa all-rounder Marco, helped bowl Zimbabwe out as Brad Evans offered a lone hand in resistance and finished 56 not out from 31 balls.Fortuin, the South Africa captain, said on Sunday: "Pleasing to see different guys stand up. Nice to come back, not nice to be reminded of past losses every time. Hopefully we can spend some more time in the future. We don't want to be a team that is reliant on two-three guys."Sikandar Raza, the Zimbabwe captain, said on Sunday: "Overall a good outing. Good to play some good cricket. Felt like we took two steps forward and one backward. That's hurtful. We missed out on a lot. South Africa showed us how to bowl. Cannot say the wicket got better in the second innings. When we came out to bat, we didn't capitalise. Our tail has been scoring a lot. That doesn't mean top- and middle-order doesn't do the job. They (lower order) keep taking us to respectable totals, but that is not enough."Hosts Namibia were the third team in the series but did not make the final. BRIEF SCORESSouth Africa 205 for 5 (J Hermann 53, Esterhuizen 32, Brevis 32, Evans 2-36) beat Zimbabwe 157 (Evans 56*, Fortuin 3-24, Jansen 3-38, Bosch 2-22) by 48 runs

China's Xi urges 'diplomatic' Mideast solution in talks with Jordan's king

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged a "diplomatic" solution to the Middle East crisis as he told the King of Jordan yesterday that the sovereignty of countries in the region should be respected. Xi told King Abdullah II during talks in Beijing that China values Jordan's "unique and important role in the region", which was thrown into crisis after the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28. "China has always advocated for a comprehensive ceasefire (and) resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means," Xi said, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement. "(China) believes the sovereignty and security of regional countries including Jordan should be respected," Xi said. The Jordanian king has been on an official visit to China since August 18 — his ninth trip to the country since taking the throne in 1999. The US-allied kingdom has been caught in the middle of Washington's months-long war with Tehran. The Chinese president also urged yesterday a "comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue", the foreign ministry statement said. China supports "promoting the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks anchored on the correct direction of the 'two-state solution'," Xi said. The two sides also signed several agreements on diplomacy, trade and supply chains, and issued a joint statement, China's foreign ministry said. They called in that statement for restoring normal navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Qatar Charity supports rehabilitation of Gaza children with prosthetic limbs in Jordan

As part of its continued humanitarian response for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, Qatar Charity (QC) is supporting the “Rehabilitation and Prosthetic Limb Fitting” project, implemented by the Restoring Hope Society (RHS) in Jordan and Gaza.The initiative seeks to help children who have undergone amputations regain mobility and gradually resume their daily lives with dignity, confidence, and hope.Currently being implemented in Jordan, the project provides comprehensive rehabilitation services for children whose injuries have resulted in the loss of one or more limbs.Through an integrated treatment plan that brings together medical care, physiotherapy, psychosocial support, and prosthetic limb fitting, the project helps strengthen children’s independence and supports their reintegration into family and community life.**media[474986]**Darrar Maaytah, the director of the QC office in Jordan, said the support reflects Qatar Charity’s commitment to standing by those affected by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, particularly children living with the severe physical and psychological consequences of their injuries.He noted that such high-impact initiatives go beyond meeting urgent medical needs, helping beneficiaries rebuild self-confidence and move toward a more stable future for themselves and their families.RHS director-general Bilal al-Abbasi said the project forms part of an integrated response targeting injured people and amputees affected by the war, many of whom have lost access to mobility and appropriate rehabilitation services.He added that implementing the project in Jordan, together with the provision of prosthetic limbs and follow-up care, complements the society’s work in Gaza and helps ensure continuity of support for beneficiaries after their return.The RHS stressed that the project is more than a medical intervention; it is a comprehensive humanitarian pathway to rebuilding the lives of injured children.**media[474986]**Their recovery journey begins with restoring mobility and extends to rebuilding confidence, enhancing their sense of safety, and enabling them to continue their education and daily routines with greater opportunities.This support builds on the efforts of the QC’s office in Jordan, which has worked since 2021 in partnership with the Jordanian government and civil society organisations to implement a range of humanitarian and development programmes.These include social welfare, sponsorships for orphans and low-income families, emergency response for communities affected by humanitarian crises, economic empowerment projects, and other key interventions.In co-operation with its partners, Qatar Charity continues to back initiatives that place people at the centre of humanitarian action and promote sustainable solutions that enable individuals, especially children, to overcome the impact of crises and reclaim their right to a dignified, safe life filled with hope and opportunity.

Egypt, Jordan FMs urge immediate end to regional military action

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi have stressed, during a telephone conversation, the importance of immediately ceasing all military actions, adding that these actions would trigger a broader regional conflict.They underlined that it is highly essential to prioritize political and diplomatic solutions, as well as ramp up coordination and consultation among Arab nations to safeguard the security and stability of the region and their peoples' assets.In a statement on Monday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Abdelatty reemphasized during the conversation that Egypt condemns the Iranian attacks on several areas in Jordan.He confirmed that his country fully stands side by side with Jordan and backs all measures it takes to protect its security, stability, and sovereignty, expressing his flat-out rejection of any assault that undermines the security and sovereignty of Arab nations.On the Palestinian cause, the two ministers underscored the need to implement all gains of the first phase of US President Donald Trump's plan and ensure the unhindered flow of life-saving humanitarian aid, as well as relief and medical assistance, into the Gaza Strip.Both sides asserted that this aid would mitigate the suffering of the Palestinian people, stressing the importance of reaching an agreement on the second phase of this plan, which includes the Israeli withdrawal from the enclave.The two ministers also condemned the ongoing Israeli violations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as a non-starter.In addition, both sides concurred on continuing closer coordination and consultation between Egypt and Jordan and beefing up the existing cooperation mechanisms to serve their shared interests, achieve the aspirations of their peoples, and ensure that coordination proceeds on a variety of regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Spieth adamant he has more golf majors left in him

Jordan Spieth refuses to accept the form that led him to win three of golf's major titles has been lost forever.The American won the US Masters, US Open and British Open in a purple patch from 2015-17, leading many observers to suggest it was just a matter of time before he joined the select band of players who have completed a career Grand Slam of golf's four most prestigious championships.But while the US PGA has continued to remain elusive for Spieth, so has any other major title.This week, however, Spieth has another chance to end that drought in a British Open being staged at the Royal Birkdale course near Liverpool -- the scene of his 2017 triumph in golf's oldest major championship.The intervening nine years have been tough for the former world number one, with injuries and a loss of form meaning Spieth has won just two tournaments since the last of his three majors.But the 32-year-old hasn't given up hope of adding a fourth major to his name."I'll never believe that until I'm at a point in my career where my health or whatever would be that, because if you give up on reaching your ceiling then I don't see a point in playing any more."I'll do everything I can to be the very best in the world because I know I can be. I have been. It's nice to have the blueprint." BEST FINISH THIS YEAR IS 11THSpieth's best finish this year is eleventh although there were signs of a reawakening at the Masters when he tied for twelfth, seven strokes behind the champion Rory McIlroy."If you are capable of leading in every (statistical) category, then you are capable of doing great things: even this season I've been able to lead in each of the different categories," he said."There are things I can do significantly better now than when I was number one in the world, therefore there should be nothing to stop me in my own head to believe that I can reach that again."I'm 32, I'm not 42. At 42 you'd really have to sacrifice a lot of things to try and do that. I don't feel like I have to."I'm always comparing myself a bit to myself at my best, but not to try to be the exact player."I know my ceiling is where that level was so I'm going to strive for it with the type of player I am now."
