England captain Kane driven by desire for records says Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel said England captain Harry Kane is driven by a burning desire for milestone moments as the striker prepares to equal his country's appearance record against the Czech Republic. Kane will draw level with former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton on 125 caps if he plays in Tuesday's Nations League match at Wembley.It will be the latest landmark in the 33-year-old's remarkable career. Kane is already well established as England's record goalscorer, taking his tally to 89 with a double in Saturday's 7-0 win in Croatia. He also became Tottenham's all-time leading scorer with 280 goals before leaving the Premier League club to join Bayern Munich in 2023. Kane has hit new heights since moving Bayern, breaking a 49-year record in September when he became the fastest player to score 100 Bundesliga goals, in his 98th league game.England boss Tuchel believes Kane's sustained success has been fuelled by a fierce competitive streak that pushes him to keep chasing more records. "I think all these number nines in the world, no matter in which league or in youth football, they are built a little bit differently," Tuchel told reporters on Monday."They not only do it so that their team wins, but they also do it for themselves, they do it for the records. "How many can I score, how many can I assist, who is the best scorer in the league, who do I have to overtake, where is the next record? "You will not find any goalscorer of this calibre who has not these individual goals set up and pushing him to the limit. So that is what drives him. That's how Harry is built."After failing to land a single trophy with Tottenham, Kane has already won two Bundesliga titles during his time in Munich. His impressive form in 2026 has made him a contender to win the Ballon d'Or later in October. "I'm not sure if I have any more words, because I feel like he scores all the time, he plays fantastic and he's in the shortlist for (the) Ballon d'Or," Tuchel said."It's just everything he does, he does it on the highest level, and he does it consecutively. "Since he takes this major role for Bayern Munich, he found a new level, and it's on and off the pitch highest level." Tuchel will be without Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa against the Czechs after the injured pair withdrew from the squad.Scott, who made his first England start against Croatia, has a thigh problem that will reportedly rule him out for two months. "I can understand that Bournemouth are not happy because they lose a key player," Tuchel said. "But I can just say that from the moment we took the decision (to play him) there was absolutely no risk apparent to me or our physical staff. It's a one-off."England are second in group A3 of the Nations League on six points, three behind leaders Spain.

Kane and Bellingham driving England forward after World Cup pain

Harry Kane is set to equal England's appearance record with his 125th cap against the Czech Republic on Tuesday as the striker looks to build on his flourishing partnership with "scary" Jude Bellingham.Kane will take centre stage if he ties former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton's landmark in the Nations League clash at Wembley. The England captain's pride in representing his country has shone through since his debut against Lithuania in 2015.Kane scored within two minutes of coming off the bench in that match, and he has rarely endured a barren spell in an England shirt ever since. The 33-year-old is England's record scorer with 89 goals after netting twice in Saturday's 7-0 demolition of Croatia.Bayern Munich star Kane has been England's talisman and the one constant throughout their highs and lows over the last 11 years. Roy Hodgson gave Kane his England debut and the striker has since played under coaches Sam Allardyce, Gareth Southgate, Lee Carsley and now Thomas Tuchel. But even having a player of Kane's predatory instincts and remarkable consistency has not been enough for England to end their angst-ridden wait for a first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup. England lost the European Championship final in 2021 and 2024. And for Kane to follow Bobby Moore as the only male England captain to lift a trophy, Tuchel believes he needs an assist from a midfielder whose virtuoso performance against Croatia on Saturday drew gushing praise from team-mates and pundits alike. In danger of missing out on the World Cup after being dropped from the England squad in October 2025, Real Madrid star Bellingham has gone from Tuchel's doghouse to the penthouse over the last 12 months. Having irked Tuchel with his volatile on-pitch antics, Bellingham eventually regained his place in time for the World Cup in June and July. It was Bellingham rather than Kane who finished as England's top scorer at the World Cup, but their tournament ended in semi-final heartbreak against Argentina. - 'Never seen anything like it' - Tuchel's defensive tactics in the closing stage of that loss were widely pilloried.But has learnt from that late meltdown and wants England to stay on the offensive, with Kane and Bellingham leading the charge. Key to England's hopes of winning Euro 2028 will be Kane staying healthy and Bellingham remaining in the kind of masterful form that inspired the rout of Croatia. The 23-year-old was so dominant in Rijeka, scoring once and providing three assists, that former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane said he can go on to be "one of the greatest players of all time". "At this moment in time, he is an amazing footballer. The package, his running power, his delivery, his goal threat," Keane said.Keane's praise was echoed by Bournemouth's Alex Scott, who made his first England start alongside Bellingham and Elliot Anderson in midfield against Croatia. "Honestly, I've never seen anything like it," Scott said."He's even better in person, seeing it up close and being on the same pitch as him, he's the best midfielder in the world."On the pitch his ability is scary and that's the benchmark we need to live up to."England winger Bukayo Saka added: "He was special, (I'm) happy to play with him and happy to have him in the England team." Tuchel said Kane's relationship with Bellingham has blossomed on and off the pitch in recent months, paving the way for the explosion of creativity and goals from the pair. Fittingly, it was Bellingham who took the captain's armband from Kane when the striker was replaced late in the Croatia match."They get better and better. They love playing with each other. They understand each other better," Tuchel said. "We adjusted our positioning a little bit after the World Cup. Jude almost plays a little bit more offensive for us. That's where I see him in the most dangerous position."

England closing the gap on Spain says Kane

Harry Kane insists England are close to the level of Spain despite losing their Nations League clash with the world champions. Thomas Tuchel's side recovered from a second-minute Lamine Yamal strike to lead at the break thanks to goals from Anthony Gordon and Kane at Wembley on Saturday. England captain Kane had the chance to make it 3-1, but slipped while taking a penalty that hit the crossbar. Spain showed their class to hit back, sealing a 3-2 victory with Alex Baena's equaliser and Mikel Oyarzabal's winner.  But Kane is adamant England showed enough to prove they can match the World Cup and European Championship holders."I think we're close, without a doubt," he said. "I think anyone who watched that game will see that. "They have the trophies to back it up, so until we do that, we can only use words. We have to show it on the pitch." England were beaten by Spain in the Euro 2024 final and missed out on a final rematch at the World Cup after losing to Argentina in the semi-finals.Kane is sure England's performance against Spain on Saturday will have left an impression on the world champions.  "We showed a lot of good things on the pitch, but in the big moments, we didn't quite have it," the Bayern Munich striker said."But we're top four in the world. We finished third in the World Cup, so without a doubt, we're close, and I think they would have felt that out there today for sure."

Kane relishing chance to become England's most-capped player

Harry Kane is in line to move level with Peter Shilton as England's most-capped player over the next fortnight, but is wondering why the record of 125 appearances for the national side is not higher.Kane is currently four short of Shilton's haul but a quartet of Nations League fixtures against Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic (two) could allow him to equal the celebrated goalkeeper's record."Growing up, the dream was just to play for England and being most capped was never even in my mind at that stage," said Kane, the Three Lions' all-time top goalscorer."The journey has been incredible to this stage, and we have achieved so much as a group and personally achieved so much and been in finals, taking the England team to a level that it hasn't been for a long, long time."So, to be four away from the all-time is just incredible and hopefully I am able to play the four games and then be back in November and be able to break it."Kane is just one of 10 men to have reached a century of caps for England.By contrast, Cristiano Ronaldo has represented Portugal a world-leading 233 times, with contemporaries Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Luka Modric (Croatia) also having passed 200 caps for their respective countries.Kane's former Tottenham team-mates Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Ivan Perisic are among a variety of modern-day players to have featured in over 150 internationals."It makes you wonder why (not) as well with England," added Kane. "Is it a cultural thing? Is it a mentality thing? Is it maybe the pressure from the outside?"Why have some of our great England players not reached that 160, 170, 180 (caps) like some of the other nations?"From my point of view, it will be an honour but ultimately there is still a long way to go and still hopefully a lot more caps I can achieve."Despite his prolific record of 85 international goals, a major tournament victory is the one thing missing from Kane's England career.A home Euros in two years' time could present his final opportunity and he is targeting Saturday's clash against world champions Spain at Wembley as a chance to lay down a marker."Look, we're playing the reigning European champions, the reigning world champions, so it doesn't get any tougher in terms of who we're going to face," he added."But ultimately if we want to be Nations League champions, European champions in a couple years, we're going to have to beat teams like Spain and Croatia and the bigger nations. It's good for us to test ourselves, test the group."

England tried to hold on but it wasn't enough, says Kane

Kane says England found a way to win

England captain Harry Kane said he was proud that his team had found a way to win a nerve-jangling World Cup last-16 match against Mexico in the Estadio Azteca. The Three Lions were on the back foot for a third of the match after defender Jarell Quansah was sent off for a high challenge.Kane, hoarse after celebrating with his teammates and England's supporters, said: "It was a crazy game. We had to fight and we had to find something."I've just been singing, I can't really talk. The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way." Jude Bellingham scored twice for England in the space of 98 seconds in the first half but then conceded a penalty that the referee awarded after checking VAR images. Kane then scored a penalty on the hour-mark. "I thought I got to the ball first, it was one of those days," Kane said. "The ref gave a lot against us. In the end it didn't matter so I'm happy."

England's World Cup hopes cannot rest on Kane alone

* Kane's two goals in 11 minutes sent England into a last-16 match against Mexico* Questions arise about England's reliance on star striker* Alan Shearer says defensive concerns persist despite the comeback victory  England's ‌World Cup campaign has increasingly come to rest on the shoulders of Harry Kane, whose goals, link-up play ‌and ability to deliver in decisive moments have repeatedly rescued a side ‌still searching for fluency and conviction. The ‌captain was again central to their ‌2-1 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the round of 32 on Wednesday, but England's reliance on their talisman raises a growing question as the knockout stage intensifies: how far can they go if Kane is the only player consistently capable of turning pressure into progress?Once again at the World Cup, England were saved by their record goalscorer.With DR Congo threatening one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, Kane dragged his team back from the brink with two goals in 11 minutes, the second a stunning piece of individual skill.The performance earned praise, but also highlighted a familiar concern.ENGLAND WINNING - BUT NOT CONVINCINGEngland have reached the last 16 unbeaten, yet they have rarely looked convincing. Their ‌attacking play has often lacked rhythm, their defence -- hampered by injuries -- has appeared shockingly vulnerable, and too often they have needed Kane to provide the solution when collective dominance has been absent.Former England captain and centre forward Alan Shearer told the BBC: "It wasn't a good performance and I've got the same concerns as I had in the previous two or three games about us defensively."Kane has once again shown why he remains among the world's elite forwards, capable of deciding matches by himself."There's not many centre forwards in the world can produce that piece of magic," Shearer said. "The way he turns and swivels - and the balance is incredible. Then to get the direction and the power into the roof ‌of the net - that was some ‌strike." OVER-RELIANCE ON ONE PLAYERBut knockout football has a way of exposing over-reliance on any one player. Opponents become stronger, margins become finer and, eventually, even the most reliable match-winners can be contained.One of the few encouraging signs was that Jude Bellingham at least has looked capable of sharing that burden.The midfielder was instrumental against DR Congo, driving England forward and repeatedly forcing openings that others failed to take."I think what we've learned up to now from England is that obviously their two most important players are Bellingham and Kane," Shearer said. "Bellingham was really unlucky, but for the goalkeeper's couple of brilliant saves. He was the one that was trying to drive forward."Against Mexico in the last 16, England will face a different challenge. The altitude of Mexico City, the intensity of knockout football and the quality of the opposition are likely to place far greater demands on Thomas Tuchel's side.Even the tournament's biggest stars need support.France's Kylian Mbappe has been among the standout players at this World Cup, but he is surrounded by match-winners such as Ousmane Dembele, Michael Olise and ‌Desire Doue, with attacking threats emerging from every area of the pitch.If England are to progress further, they, too, will need those around Kane to step up.

Harry Kane scored his 32nd goal of the campaign as Bayern Munich cruised to a 4-2 home win over Stuttgart to claim a record-extending 35th Bundesliga title. Raphael Guerreiro, Nicolas Jackson and Alphonso Davies joined Kane on the scoresheet, while Chris Fuehrich and Chema Andres scored for the visitors. Borussia Dortmund’s limp 2-1 defeat at Hoffenheim on Saturday, their second in two matches, left the door open for Bayern, who only needed a point at home to secure the title with four games to spare. “It’s been a fantastic season for us,” said Bundesliga leading scorer Kane. “To finish the league off in the way we have with the goals we scored... credit to the lads... we still have a lot to play for... but all the hard work, this makes it all worth it.” Coach Vincent Kompany left regular starters Kane, Michael Olise, Manuel Neuer, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah on the bench with Wednesday’s German Cup semi-final at Bayer Leverkusen in mind. Bayern fell behind when Chris Fuehrich scored with 21 minutes gone but roared back, scoring three goals in seven minutes. Jamal Musiala created Guerreiro’s opener before Luis Diaz laid on two goals in four minutes for Jackson and Davies to grab control of the match by the break. Kane grabbed another early in the second-half to ensure another Bundesliga crown was quickly added to his burgeoning team trophy collection. With victory secure, Bayern took their foot off the pedal as an assistant brought bags full with ‘2026 Champions’ t-shirts to the sideline. Andres added a late goal for Stuttgart with two minutes remaining but Bayern were on cruise control with title celebrations in mind. The title victory once again illustrated Bayern’s modern and historical dominance of German football. The Bavarian giants have now won 13 of the past 14 Bundesliga titles. Bayern have 35 league titles, with no other team reaching double figures. Bayern’s wealth and influence outshines all of their domestic rivals and this season has been truly remarkable. Bayern have scored 109 goals, the most in Bundesliga history and eight more than the previous record set back in 1971-72, with four games remaining. Free-scoring Bayern have 79 points and a goal difference of 80. If the season ended today, Bayern would become the first team to have a greater goal difference than points tally in Bundesliga history. With four wins in their remaining four games, Bayern could bring up 91 points, equalling the best mark set by their treble-bound side in 2012-13. Then there are the individual records. Kane, who became the first Englishman since 1930-31 to reach a half-century of goals in a season in all competitions on Wednesday, can still reach Robert Lewandowski’s single-season goals record of 41. The England captain has 32 goals from his 27 games this campaign and is in with an outside chance of catching Lewandowski. Michael Olise has 18 assists, three shy of the all-time mark set by Thomas Mueller in 2019-20. Earlier, Freiburg pushed last-placed Heidenheim closer to the drop with a 2-1 home win. Johan Manzambi put the Europa League semi-finalists ahead after 24 minutes but Heidenheim’s Budu Zivzivadze levelled things up just before the hour mark. Freiburg’s Maximilian Eggestein scored the winner with seven minutes remaining to help his side leapfrog Eintracht Frankfurt into seventh spot. The defeat leaves Heidenheim, who hosted Chelsea in the Europa Conference League last season, seven points behind the relegation play-off spot and 11 from safety with four games to play.

Kane says Bayern ‘don’t fear anyone’ ahead of Real clash

Harry Kane said Bayern Munich had nothing to fear in taking on Real Madrid after setting up a quarter-final clash with the European giants by beating Atalanta on Wednesday. Kane, who sat on the bench in the first leg, scored twice as Bayern won 4-1 on Wednesday, wrapping up a 10-2 aggregate victory to book a date with the 15-time European Cup winners. “We don’t fear anyone,” the England captain said of the Real match-up. “We know it’ll be tough, but with the confidence from this game and the season so far, we just need to keep doing what we’re doing.” Kane’s brace brought his career total to 50 goals in 66 Champions League games. This season, he has 47 goals in 39 games in all competitions -- more than he has ever scored for a club in a single season. Nine points clear in the Bundesliga with eight games to play, Bayern have lost just two of 41 games in all competitions this season. In his first season in Germany, Kane lost over two legs in the semi-finals against Real, who beat Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley. Kane, who wore the captain’s armband at Bayern for the first time in the Champions League, suggested his side had learned from the defeat and knew how to take on Real. “Whenever you play Real Madrid in the Champions League, you have to expect a tough opposition, you have to be ready for a fight,” Kane said. “You have to be ready to try and play in a certain way, and we’ll be ready for that.” Bayern have not beaten the Spanish giants since the semi-finals of the 2011-12 competition. “Both clubs are giant,” Bayern manager Vincent Kompany said. “Who’s the best right now isn’t important -- the history of both clubs is huge It’ll be very special. Honestly speaking, with Madrid, when the level goes higher, then they get better. That’s why I’m expecting an absolute top game. It’ll be good for the fans – the neutral fans as well – but at the end we want to win.”

Kompany warns of complacency as injury-hit Bayern host Atalanta

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany said his "biggest role" was preventing complacency as his undermanned side host Atalanta today sitting on a 6-1 first-leg lead.Despite being without striker Harry Kane, the Bundesliga leaders thumped Atalanta in Bergamo last Wednesday in their Champions League last-16 opener, racking up three goals in each half. No team in European Cup history has ever overturned a five-goal deficit in a second leg but Kompany took the responsibility of ensuring his injury-hit side know the job is not yet done."That's precisely my biggest role in a situation like this," Kompany told reporters. "The crucial foundation from which we have to work is a willingness to work, a willingness to run, and the joy of playing football, which we will also show."Bayern were reduced to nine men but dug deep to draw 1-1 at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday and Kompany said the result would spur his men. "The result against Leverkusen was actually positive. It showed what kind of story our season could be. We don't have much room. I don't want to go into these games too laid back. But my greatest confidence is in this team."The six-time Champions League winners are odds-on to cruise into the quarter-finals but have been hard hit by injuries, particularly in goal. Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito are all injured, while Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise are suspended.In goal, Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich are injured, while back-up Jonas Urbig is facing a race against time to return from a concussion sustained in Bergamo. If Urbig does not return, Kompany confirmed teenage debutant Leonard Prescott would be between the sticks.At 16 years and 191 days, Prescott would become the youngest goalkeeper in Champions League history, beating the current record set by Maarten Vandevoordt by more than a year. But Kompany said the 2009-born 'keeper was not showing any traces of nerves. "He's very calm," Kompany said, adding "if he plays tomorrow, he'll get our full backing, our full support."Kane returned off the bench against Leverkusen after missing two games and is in line to start on Wednesday.In the Champions League, Bayern's big first leg win over Atalanta means that the club is on track for a meeting with Real Madrid or Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Kane bags brace as Bayern end Dortmund's title hopes

Harry Kane scored twice and Joshua Kimmich bagged a late winner as Bayern Munich came back to win 3-2 at Borussia Dortmund on Saturday and move 11 points clear in the Bundesliga.Bayern trailed at half-time after Nico Schlotterbeck headed Dortmund in front but Kane scored a tap-in and a penalty.Dortmund levelled through Daniel Svensson but Kimmich was in the right place to blast in from close range with three minutes remaining to leave Bayern as runaway favourites for the title.The result all but sews up another Bundesliga crown for the Bavarian giants with only 10 matchdays remaining, while continuing Dortmund's rough week, just days after their Champions League exit at Atalanta.Dortmund have now lost just twice in 24 league matches this season, both times to Bayern.Kane's fourth successive Bundesliga brace took him to 30 goals from 24 games this season.Bayern had played two fewer matches in the past 11 days but Dortmund looked the fresher early on as they chased a victory to move them five points behind the leaders.With 18 minutes gone, Schlotterbeck caught Josip Stanisic on the shin with his studs. Despite Bayern demanding the Germany defender see red, Schlotterbeck was shown a yellow card.The centre-back was in the thick of the action again just eight minutes later when he rose high to head in a Daniel Svensson corner and put Dortmund in front.Dortmund kept up the energy after the break but Bayern levelled things up against the run of play in simple fashion.Kimmich chipped the ball over the Dortmund defence, onto the head of Serge Gnabry who squared for Kane to score in the 54th minute.With just over 20 minutes remaining, Stanisic tussled with Schlotterbeck again and the Bayern player went down after the defender clipped his trailing leg, bringing Kane to the spot.The England captain converted to give Bayern the lead. Kane now has nine goals in his past five Bundesliga games, four of which have come from the penalty spot.Dortmund pushed forward in response and Marcel Sabitzer floated in a cross which Svensson swept home to give them hope on 83 minutes.Not content to play for a draw, Bayern sought the goal which would all but secure them the league title.That moment came as Kimmich did remarkably well to adjust his body and hammer in the decisive strike with his left foot after Dortmund had failed to adequately clear a Michael Olise cross in the 87th minute. Leverkusen grab pointFormer Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah scored with two minutes remaining to snatch Bayer Leverkusen a 1-1 home draw with Mainz.Leverkusen trailed after an excellent Sheraldo Becker goal but Quansah squeezed the ball in at the near post late on.The point moved Leverkusen, who have a game in hand to be played at Hamburg on Wednesday, three behind fourth-placed Stuttgart.Leverkusen looked leggy after a hard-fought scoreless Champions League draw with Olympiacos midweek, which sent them through to the last 16 where they will face Arsenal.Moments before half-time, Leverkusen right-back Arthur was stretchered off with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.Elsewhere, St Pauli's resurgence continued with a 1-0 win at high-flying Hoffenheim, with Mathias Pereira Lage's goal just before half-time the difference.Pauli have won three of their past four to climb out of the relegation spots, while third-placed Hoffenheim have picked up just four points in their past four games.Borussia Moenchengladbach's Kevin Diks converted a penalty four minutes into stoppage time to take his side to a crucial 1-0 win over Union Berlin.Gladbach's first win since early January took them three points clear of the relegation playoff spot.Fellow battlers Werder Bremen also picked up a crucial victory, winning 2-0 at home to last-placed Heidenheim to move out of the automatic relegation placings.Double winners in 2004, Bremen had picked up just four points in 13 games since their last win in early November, but won thanks to a Jovan Milosevic strike and a late Heidenheim own goal.
