Manchester City have signed teenage winger Jeremy Monga from Leicester on a five-year deal, the Premier League giants announced Saturday.Monga made his English top-flight debut for the Foxes aged just 15 and has joined City despite interest from other leading clubs.The 17-year-old played 37 times for Leicester and was also the youngest player to start a game for the club.No fee has been disclosed but Monga's move is reported to be worth £10mn ($13mn) with add-ons on a contract which will take him through to 2031.Monga becomes the third English player to join Manchester City during the current transfer window, as new manager Enzo Maresca looks to refreshthe squad, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Pierce Charles and club-record signing Elliot Anderson.Monga featured for the first time in the top flight as a second-half substitute in Leicester's 3-0 defeat by Newcastle in April 2025 under Ruud van Nistelrooy and made his first start in the League Cup against Huddersfield in August 2025.The England under-19 international is also the third-youngest player to feature in the Premier League behind Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman."When I became aware that Manchester City were interested, I knew instantly this was the right choice for me," Monga told his new club's website."For any young footballer, to become part of this amazing club is a dream come true. This has been the best club in England over the past 10 years."And it has also handed opportunities to players from the academy like Phil Foden and Nico O'Reilly which shows that the pathway is there."It is a privilege to be here and I'm delighted to have joined." 

England captain Harry Kane labelled Erling Haaland "a machine" but said he and Norway's "beast" of a number nine are completely different players as they prepare to face off in Saturday's World Cup quarter-final.Haaland has struck seven times in his first four matches ever at a major tournament, including a devastating double to eliminate Brazil, and his goals have carried Norway into the last eight for the first time.Kane is only one goal behind the Manchester City striker for the tournament and has taken his overall World Cup record to 14 goals."I think we're completely different players. I know we're both strikers, but we're in almost two different positions," Kane told his pre-match press conference."Erling is incredible, his goalscoring record, physically he's a machine, he's a beast. His finishing is at the highest level and his goalscoring record speaks for itself."I see myself as a different player, although I score the same goals. I like to maybe touch the ball a little bit more, be involved with the play a little bit more, but also can play as maybe the out-and-out number nine."I don't think it's one to compare ourselves. I respect him a lot as a player and as a professional. Obviously, I'm hoping he has a quiet day tomorrow, but I think his overall performance is very good. He's a fantastic player." Despite their phenomenal goalscoring record, Haaland and Kane trail Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who have both netted eight times in the 2026 tournament, in the battle for the Golden Boot. Kane won the prize for the World Cup's top goalscorer in 2018 but England fell short of glory as they exited in the semi-finals to Croatia.Ending a 60-year wait for England to win a major tournament remains Kane's primary aim, but he is hoping to score the goals to carry the Three Lions to glory."I think it's been an amazing World Cup on that front in terms of all the top strikers, all the top goalscorers scoring goals and affecting games. It's not always the case at these major tournaments," added the Bayern Munich striker."It's a great competition. It puts me in a mindset to be at my very best level as much as possible."My main goal is to win the World Cup more than another golden boot, but I also know I'm a goalscorer, I'm the number nine, so if I'm scoring goals, it's obviously going to help the team."Kane has been the spearhead for a generation of England players that have come closer than ever before to ending the long wait since the 1966 World Cup to win a major tournament.Under Gareth Southgate they lost in both the last two finals of the European Championship and exited at the quarter-final and semi-final stage of the past two World Cups.Kane issued a rallying cry for a huge final effort to get over the line in what could be three games in eight days to make history."Ultimately, until we win that trophy, there's always going to be that talk around England and the team but we're in a good position. We're in a place that we wanted to be six weeks ago when we met up for prep camp," he added. "We took a lot of good steps in the right direction. We've overcome a lot of difficult moments and difficult games."Now we're in the final eight days of the final push. We're going to need everyone to be at the highest level to achieve our dreams."

The German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Saturday that it was close to an agreement with Jurgen Klopp for him to become the new Germany coach.However, before the 59-year-old makes his return to the touchline, the DFB said it still needed to secure the approval of his current employer, the Red Bull Group."DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held an initial in-depth discussion with Jurgen Klopp in New York on Friday regarding his potential appointment as national team coach," the DFB stated in a press release."During this constructive discussion, an understanding was reached on the key points of a potential contract."Discussions will continue next week. Both parties are confident that the negotiations - subject to an agreement with Klopp's current employer, Red Bull - can ultimately be brought to a successful conclusion," the statement continued.Klopp has been the DFB's preferred candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany's round-of-32 World Cup exit after losing on penalties to Paraguay.The German is widely considered one of the finest coaches in the game after glittering spells at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.Klopp stepped away from management after leaving Liverpool in 2024 and has since been engaged as the head of global football for energy drink brand Red Bull, over-seeing a multi-club network which includes clubs in Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States and Japan.Last weekend, Klopp said he was "more than recharged" following his break from the frontlines of football.Since winning the World Cup 12 years ago in Brazil, Germany suffered two consecutive group-stage exits, before their latest disappointment in North America this summer. 

South African midfielder Jayden Adams, who represented his country at the ongoing World Cup, died on Saturday at the age of 25 , Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said."It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams," McKenzie said in a statement.The minister did not disclose a cause of death."South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents," he said.The Confederation of African Football (CAF) also paid tribute, saying on X: "Football has lost one of its own."Police said they had opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning."Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation," Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk told AFP.Adams played in all three of South Africa's group-stage matches at the World Cup, as Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32 for the first time, but did not feature in the knockout defeat by Canada.He was also part of the South Africa squad that finished third at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.Born in Cape Town, Adams came through the Stellenbosch FC academy and became the club's first youth graduate to sign a professional contract in August 2020.He went on to make 139 appearances for the Cape Winelands side and helped them win the Carling Knockout in 2023 before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.At Sundowns, the midfielder added a Premiership title and a CAF Champions League crown to his list of honours.His death comes less than a month after the passing of his grandmother, on the eve of South Africa's Group A match against Czechia at Atlanta Stadium."Jayden started in the match against Czechia and gave his all while carrying the burden of losing his grandmother," the South African Football Association said at the time. 

Jassim Rashid al-Buenain has announced his resignation yesterday as president of the Qatar Football Association (QFA) following the conclusion of Qatar’s campaign in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.In a statement published on his official X account, al-Buenain said his decision comes after three years at the helm of the federation, a period he described as marked by significant challenges and continuous efforts to advance Qatari football.He said the federation worked tirelessly to transform its ambitions into tangible achievements, emphasising that commitment, dedication and teamwork were key to accomplishing the objectives set during his tenure. Al-Buenain also expressed his appreciation to everyone who supported the federation throughout his presidency, wishing continued success for Qatari football in the years ahead.Al-Buenain said the achievements made during his tenure stand as a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. He thanked the federation’s members and staff for their commitment, stressing that the successes achieved were the result of collective effort and prioritizing the interests of Qatari football.He said he leaves his position with pride in what was accomplished over the past three years, while expressing confidence that Qatari football will continue to progress.  Al-Buenain also wished the QFA and Al Annabi continued success in the years ahead. His resignation follows Al Annabi’s exit from the FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, after finishing bottom of Group B. Qatar made history by earning its first-ever World Cup point with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland, before suffering defeats to Canada 6-0 and Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1, ending their campaign in the group stage.

Al Sadd announced on Sunday the appointment of Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu as head coach of the club's first football team on a two-year contract through 2028. In a statement on its official website, the club said Lucescu's appointment is part of its strategy to build on recent success and strengthen the team's position at both the domestic and continental levels, in line with the ambitions of the club and its supporters. The club said Lucescu's coaching staff will include three assistant coaches, fitness coaches, a goalkeeping coach and a performance analyst.Lucescu succeeds Italian coach Roberto Mancini, who left the club in June after leading Al Sadd to the Qatari league title last season. The Romanian previously managed El Jaish during the 2012-13 season, guiding the Qatari club to the Round of 16 in its first appearance in the AFC Champions League. He later coached Romanian side Petrolul Ploiesti and Greek clubs Xanthi and PAOK before taking charge of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal from 2019 to 2021.

Ange Postecoglou has been appointed the new head coach of Al-Nassr on a two-year deal, ‌the Saudi Pro League champions said ​on Friday,as the ‌Australian attempts to revive his ‌career after ⁠two ‌bruising stints in the ‌Premier League."A new chapter. Mr Ange Postecoglou ⁠appointed as head coach of the Al-Nassr first team. The contract spans two seasons," the club said in a statement."We wish him and his staff every success in their journey."Postecoglou previously managed Tottenham ​Hotspur, whom he guided to Europa League glory in 2025, but he was sacked two weeks ‌later after they ⁠finished 17th ​in the Premier League standings.A miserable ​reign at Nottingham Forest in the 2025-26 season came to a swift and brutal end 39 days after his appointment when he went winless in his opening eight games in charge, which included six defeats.The 60-year-old had been linked with the Scotland job after Steve ‌Clarke stepped down ‌following their World ⁠cup exit, as well as Kazakhstan but ⁠media reports ⁠said his wage demands were too high for the central Asian side.He takes over an Al-Nassr side led by Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who guided the club to the ​Saudi Pro League title on the final day of the season in May.A manager known for winning trophies in his second season, Postecoglou guided Celtic to two Scottish Premiership titles while he has also won league titles with Brisbane Roar and Yokohama ‌F Marinos. 

Manchester City on Monday hired former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca to lead the club into a new era after Pep Guardiola stepped down at the end of last season.Maresca agreed a three-year contract with City after being forced to wait several weeks to seal his move to the Etihad Stadium."Manchester City is a club I know very well and to have the chance to manage this team is a brilliant opportunity for me," said Maresca, who previously coached Leicester in the Championship and Chelsea in the Premier League."City is an incredibly well-run football club. Everything they do is innovative, planned and purposeful. For a manager, that is a dream situation. It provides the consistency I need to do my job effectively."The 46-year-old Maresca had been strongly linked with the City job once reports emerged of Guardiola's potential exit.But Maresca's arrival in Manchester was held up by Chelsea's demand for a reported £17mn ($22mn) compensation package for the Italian, who was still contracted to the Blues until 2029 when he departed in January.Chelsea took the unusual step of issuing a statement, on the announcement of Maresca's appointment, to explain he had informed them earlier in the season "there might be an opportunity for him to succeed Pep Guardiola at the end of the season"."In December 2025, our head coach unexpectedly and abruptly resigned from his position," the club added."Obviously, we felt let down." Premier League glory Maresca will be tasked with restoring City to the summit of English football after two years without the Premier League title.He has experience of life at City after spending the 2022-23 season as one of Guardiola's assistants, helping them win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble.The former Juventus and West Brom midfielder also coached City's elite development squad to the 'Premier League 2' title in 2020-21.Maresca added: "This will be my third spell here. I know this club, I know the demands and I know the expectations."The quality of the people who work here is what makes it so special, and I want to thank them for showing faith in my ability."I cannot wait to start coaching the players. I want us to win, play good football and enjoy the pressure of representing Manchester City." Detail orientated  Maresca is back in management after leaving Chelsea under a cloud on New Year's Day.His spell at Chelsea started promisingly as the Blues finished fourth in the Premier League and won the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup in his first season.The intensely driven and detail oriented Maresca had a good relationship with Chelsea players and Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella, who has since joined Real Madrid, both expressed frustration at his departure.Maresca, who joined Chelsea after leading Leicester to promotion from the Championship in 2023-24, is a disciple of Guardiola, using the Spaniard's possession-based philosophy as the template for his own style of play.Replicating Guardiola's success will be a daunting task for Maresca, who will find a squad that had been significantly overhauled over the last 18 months as the club moved on from several of the pillars of their dynastic title-winning era.After months of speculation over his future, Guardiola quit in May, bringing the curtain down on an iconic decade in charge of City.He won the FA Cup and League Cup in his final season, but second-placed City finished seven points behind Premier League champions Arsenal.It was the second successive year that City had failed to win the Premier League after Guardiola led them to the title in six of his first eight seasons in England.The 55-year-old Spaniard, who lifted 17 major trophies with City, said he no longer had the energy to lead the club after 10 years in Manchester.City hope Maresca can emulate Arsenal's success with Mikel Arteta, another of Guardiola's former assistants.Maresca will look to make a big splash in the transfer market to herald his arrival.City have reportedly agreed a club record deal with Nottingham Forest for England midfielder Elliot Anderson, whilst they are also reported to be chasing Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi. 

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said he is running out of ways to describe the performances of Lionel Messi after seeing his captain become the first player ‌to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches in their ​3-1 win over Jordan ‌on Saturday.Messi was introduced from the bench on the ‌hour mark at ⁠Dallas Stadium and ‌netted an 80th-minute free kick ‌to continue a scoring run that saw him surpass the mark he ⁠shared with France's Just Fontaine and Brazilian Jairzinho."It's a little bit of an uncomfortable situation when people ask me that and I don't know what to say," Scaloni said when quizzed once again about Messi's performance."Today he could've played 90 minutes and, without undermining our opponent, he wanted his team mates to have time on ​the pitch and to save himself for what's coming up. He doesn't think so much about the numbers that people are talking about. The only word that ‌comes to mind is ⁠that I'm surprised."Messi's ​strike put the seal on a largely comfortable win for ​the champions, who took a two-goal lead into the interval following a Giovani Lo Celso free kick and a penalty from Lautaro Martinez.Those goals were the first not scored by Messi for Argentina at the current World Cup, before the 39-year-old took his total to a tournament-leading six. Scaloni had made nine changes to his starting line-up and he was pleased with the performances of those who had featured little in the tournament so far."It's a ‌very positive opinion that I ‌have, especially as I ⁠was able to include all the players, this was a goal we ⁠always set for ourselves," ⁠he said. "I believe all of them deserve to enjoy coming to a World Cup and playing at a World Cup and we were able to give them minutes. I think they played quite well in a difficult match. They showed me today that I can count on them."Argentina next ​take on Cape Verde in the round of 32 in Miami and Scaloni said he would not underestimate the debutants. "Based on what I've seen, I'm not surprised," he said of their progress to the knockout rounds. "They're a good team, they have made it very difficult for the three opponents they have played."Spain couldn't beat them, Uruguay couldn't either. They're a fast team, they play well with a high calibre of ‌play. I can ​guarantee you they're a team that's going to make it difficult for us." 

Iran's hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout phase for the first time came to an agonising end on Saturday after Austria's last-gasp equaliser against ‌Algeria left them outside the tournament's eight best third-placed teams. Amir ​Ghalenoei's side completed their ‌Group G campaign on Friday with a 1-1 draw ‌against Egypt, ⁠leaving them waiting ‌to discover whether three points ‌would be enough to earn a spot in the round of 32. Iran ⁠had already endured one major setback when a stoppage-time winner against Egypt was ruled out for offside. That left them needing other results in group-stage matches to go their way, and for a few minutes on Saturday it looked as if Iran were going to squeeze through when Algeria struck in stoppage time to lead ​Austria 3-2. However, the Austrians equalised with almost the final kick of the game, salvaging a 3-3 draw that sent both teams through and denied Iran a ‌place in the knockouts in ⁠their seventh World ​Cup appearance. Iran leave the tournament unbeaten after draws with ​Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt in a challenging campaign due to issues off the pitch. Uncertainty over visas and Iran's conflict with the U.S. meant the team had to commute from their tournament base in co-hosts Mexico for their three group games in the United States. US authorities required them to enter within 24 hours of a match and leave the same day, though the restrictions were eased slightly for their final game in Seattle, where they ‌were allowed to arrive ‌two days ahead of the ⁠game. US President Donald Trump had said in March that Iran were ⁠welcome to participate in the ⁠World Cup but he did not believe it was appropriate for them to be in the United States "for their own life and safety". After the draw with Egypt, captain Mehdi Taremi described the situation as a logistical "disaster" and questioned whether his team were truly welcome at the tournament. "Who ​wants to help us?" Taremi told reporters. "If they want us to be out - OK, let's be out. But that's not fair." Key members of the delegation had been unable to join the squad in the US, and Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said his team were being "oppressed”. Ultimately, Iran's campaign came down to moments. Had Taremi scored a first-half penalty against Egypt, or had his header hit the net instead of the crossbar ‌later on, Iran ​might have been looking forward to a knockout match for the first time.
