The Qatar Football Association (QFA) believes that the strength and unity of Asian football depend upon open consultation, mutual respect and sound institutional governance, stressed QFA President, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani."Our recent correspondence with the Asian Football Confederation raises an important but straightforward question concerning the processes through which positions are taken in the collective name of AFC Member Associations", His Excellency said in a press statement published on QFA's website.This is not a question of personalities, nor of whether individual associations agree or disagree with the substance of any particular position. It is about ensuring that the voices of Member Associations are appropriately heard when Asian football speaks collectively, His Excellency added.He further emphasised that QFA raises these concerns in a constructive and brotherly spirit, with respect for the AFC and its leadership, and in the shared interest of strengthening the governance, unity and credibility of Asian football.

The Qatar Football Association (QFA) has called on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to uphold the principles of transparency, consultation and sound corporate governance in its decision-making, stressing that collective positions should reflect the views of its member associations.The call came in an official letter from QFA President HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani to AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa, following the AFC's decision to join UEFA and CONCACAF in a statement criticising FIFA President Gianni Infantino on August 10.Infantino, who is seeking reelection next year, has faced open revolt after UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF attacked his conduct and called for him to quit over his aborted bid to bring private investment into FIFA competitions like ​the World Cup. Infantino proposed carving off the commercial rights to the World Cup and selling 20% ‌to private investors ​to raise about $4.2 billion before a U-turn following the furore.Sheikh Hamad, an AFC Executive Committee member and FIFA Council member, said neither he nor the QFA had been consulted before the three confederations issued the statement, which purported to represent their members collectively. "Neither the QFA, nor I personally ... was consulted, whether formally or informally, prior to the issuance of the statement," Sheikh Hamad wrote.He added that no advance notice was given, no draft was circulated and the QFA was not given an opportunity to comment on or contribute to the statement before it was published in the AFC's name and on behalf of its members. "A collective view must first be ascertained; it cannot be presumed, and it cannot be brought into existence by declaration," he said.Sheikh Hamad asked the AFC to provide a written explanation of the consultation process, if any, that preceded the statement, the mechanism used to inform or consult member associations, and the basis on which the AFC considered itself authorised to speak collectively on their behalf.He stressed that any position presented as a collective view of member associations should follow a clear consultation process and should not assume consensus without first consulting the members.The QFA president also emphasised the importance of sound institutional procedures and governance standards, saying that issuing a statement on behalf of AFC members without consulting them raises questions about the mechanism used to reach such positions.Sheikh Hamad said he wanted to address the matter constructively in a way that preserves the unity of Asian football associations and strengthens trust and cooperation among them.The dispute comes after six Arab football association presidents, including those of Qatar, Egypt and 2030 World Cup co-hosts Morocco, backed Infantino on Thursday amid the crisis surrounding FIFA's failed private investment proposal.Four of the six signatories - Sheikh Hamad, Egyptian Football Association President Hany Abo Rida, Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa and Mauritanian Football Federation President Ahmed Yahya - are also FIFA Council members.

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has welcomed FIFA's decision to withdraw its plan to sell a stake in its competitions -including the World Cup- into private hands."The proposal was unanimously rejected by UEFA's national associations and by many other federations and confederations of all sizes around the world, whose job it is to protect football," UEFA said in a statement today."UEFA will begin work immediately with partners and stakeholders all over the world and right across the game to propose a new way of distributing resources through the existing FIFA Forward programme," the statement said.UEFA's stance followed FIFA's decision to abandon the project, after similar criticism from the Asian Football Confederation, while other federations expressed reservations about the proposal.FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced in a statement on Saturday that the organization was backing down from its plan to open the world's governing body of football to private sector investors, following a wave of criticism and concerns about commodifying football, amid questions about potential conflicts of interest.Infantino said: "After carefully listening to all points of view, it became clear that the project had created divisions that no longer served the fundamental purpose for which it was launched."Infantino's reversal comes at a time when FIFA is facing additional pressure following the recent resignation of its chief advisor, Carlos Cordeiro.Last Tuesday, FIFA had unexpectedly unveiled a plan to increase funding for football development to USD 10 billion over the next four years, but the plan was met with widespread criticism regarding its content and the way it was presented.   

The Gulf Football Federation has unveiled a new visual identity and officially adopted the name "Gulf Football Federation," replacing its previous title, the Arabian Gulf Cup Football Federation, as part of a strategic rebranding aimed at reflecting its long-term vision for the development of football across the region. In a statement issued on Thursday, the federation said the new identity is built around the values of trust, dynamism and modernity, underscoring its commitment to strengthening its position as a leading regional sporting organisation while creating a contemporary brand that represents the spirit of the game and the ambitions of Gulf football under a unified umbrella. The federation said its new logo draws inspiration from the Gulf region's identity, culture and heritage, while symbolising the rapid progress of Gulf football and inspiring future generations. President of the Gulf Football Federation, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani, described the rebranding as a significant milestone in the federation's evolution."We are at a pivotal moment in our growth journey, and it is essential that we adopt a new identity that reflects the transformative path we are preparing to embark on over the coming decades," he said. He reaffirmed that the federation's long-term vision remains focused on enhancing the global profile of Gulf football and supporting the continued success of the region's national teams and clubs on the international stage."This new identity embodies our ambition to achieve unprecedented levels of excellence and success," Sheikh Hamad added. The federation's president also highlighted the strategic partnerships established in recent years, saying they have played a key role in advancing Gulf football, driving the growth of the federation's competitions, strengthening their regional standing and reflecting the sport's increasing popularity across the Gulf. Concluding his remarks, Sheikh Hamad expressed his appreciation to the federation's member associations for their continued support since its establishment and wished them continued success. "As we embark on this new chapter with confidence and ambition, we express our appreciation for the efforts of all member associations in supporting the federation's journey since its establishment," he said.

Qatar SC have signed Spanish midfielder Albert Ramis Luque from Muaither ahead of the 2026-27 season.In a statement on X account, the club said the move is part of its efforts to strengthen the first-team squad with players capable of providing a technical boost.Qatar SC did not disclose the financial terms of the deal or the length of the player's contract.Luque joined Muaither in the summer of 2025 before securing the move to Qatar SC.Managed by Spaniard Bartolome Marquez Lopez for a second consecutive season, Qatar SC will be aiming to improve on last season's sixth-place finish in the Qatar Stars League, while also seeking a strong campaign in the Gulf Club Champions League.   

Mark van Bommel is the new coach of the Belgian national football team, the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) announced on Friday.The 49-year-old former Dutch international succeeds Frenchman Rudi Garcia, who stepped down having guided the 'Red Devils' to the World Cup quarter-finals."Mark van Bommel has signed a contract that will see him lead Belgium's national team through UEFA EURO 2028," read an RBFA statement.Van Bommel, who was an uncompromising midfielder and key member of the robust Netherlands side that lost to Spain in the 2010 World Cup final, said it was a "great honour" to have been appointed."I would like to thank the Royal Belgian Football Association for their confidence in me," he said."Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential."Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best."Success is never guaranteed, but hard work, honesty and commitment are."After hanging up his boots in 2013, Van Bommel has cut his teeth as coach of PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg and Antwerp.Van Bommel has been without a team since departing Belgian top-flight club Antwerp in June 2024, a year after having guided them to a first league title in 66 years.Belgium, made up of a mix of the last of their ageing 'golden generation' and younger talent, improved as the World Cup went on.They exited after being beaten 2-1 by eventual champions Spain, though they had the consolation of being the only team to breach the Spanish defence.Local media reported differences of opinion between Garcia and several players, as well as with technical director Vincent Mannaert, who was unhappy with certain group-stage performances.Garcia's departure, however, was met with bewilderment by many supporters on social media.However, according to the media, Belgian football chiefs were keen to hire a younger coach than 62-year-old Garcia.They achieved that aim with van Bommel."I am truly delighted that Mark van Bommel and his assistants have agreed to take on this challenge," said Mannaert."They are highly motivated and ambitious, and I am convinced that, with their international experience as both coaches and players, they will be perfectly placed to help our Belgian Red Devils continue to improve, achieve results and reach their full potential, both individually and as a team."Van Bommel's first challenge will be three Nations League matches, beginning with Italy on September 25.
