Qatar children get hands-on with mangrove science

ExxonMobil Qatar, through its research arm ExxonMobil Research Qatar (EMRQ), has launched the Mangrove Lab, an initiative that turns years of scientific study into hands-on experiments teaching children about the importance of the country's mangroves.The programme translates research into the coastal ecosystem into an interactive learning experience, giving children the chance to explore Qatar's unique mangrove habitats as young scientists.Amal al-Malki, safety, security, health and environment adviser at EMRQ, told Gulf Times the initiative grew out of a study the company conducted to identify the conditions most suitable for mangrove growth in Qatar."The Mangrove Lab is based on mangrove research that we have done. We have launched the initiative to translate the actual research into something more simple and easy to understand. And we simplified it into very easy experiments for children to understand how mangroves work, why they are important, and to give them the opportunity to be scientists," al-Malki said in an interview with Gulf Times at the launch of the ExxonMobil STEAM Festival.She said the initiative is the first of its kind in the country. "We started the lab as an idea to do something different to the regular outreach that we usually do. We wanted to convey the outcomes of the research, and it started off with a booklet that we wanted to distribute. Then it translated into the Mangrove Lab, and it was first launched at the Qatar ExxonMobil Tennis Open in February this year on a small scale," she explained.Al-Malki said ExxonMobil then partnered with the National Museum of Qatar for a three-month STEAM festival, bringing together science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics."ExxonMobil's main contribution to the festival is the Mangrove Lab, to make mangrove science accessible and engaging for children. The research, conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, examined factors including salinity and weather conditions to determine the optimal conditions for mangroves to grow in Qatar," she said.According to al-Malki, the research was intended to provide information that could support future mangrove restoration efforts in the country. She said ExxonMobil expanded the concept and made it accessible to the wider public through its partnership with Qatar Museums."Rather than presenting the research as technical information, ExxonMobil has transformed it into simple experiments that allow children to take on the role of scientists," she said."The Mangrove Lab features two experiments and an observation activity. Children, using microscopes, examine different types of soil associated with mangrove environments. A pH experiment introduces them to acidity and alkalinity, and helps demonstrate the conditions in which mangroves grow," she said.A third activity focuses on salinity. Using a refractometer, children measure the amount of salt in water and record their findings in a booklet provided as part of the workshop."The activities are designed not only to teach children about mangroves, but also to demonstrate that science, technology and mathematics can be accessible and enjoyable," al-Malki said.The initiative also seeks to increase awareness of the ecological importance of mangroves among younger generations.Although Al Khor is widely associated with Qatar's mangrove habitats, al-Malki noted that mangroves are found in several other parts of the country, including areas in the north and west. Qatar is also pursuing the restoration and preservation of its natural environment, with mangrove restoration forming part of wider environmental efforts.While the Mangrove Lab is rooted in ExxonMobil's scientific research, its broader objective is to encourage children to take an interest in science while developing an appreciation for Qatar's natural environment.Al-Malki said the company hopes the initiative will encourage children to explore not only environmental science but the wider range of STEAM disciplines featured at the festival."The initiative represents an effort to bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding, while putting Qatar's mangroves at the centre of an educational experience designed to inspire the country's younger generation to understand, value and help protect its natural environment," she added.

Children navigate Qatar’s maritime heritage at ExxonMobil STEAM Festival at NMoQ

When was the last time you built a boat, made your own navigation tool, and then used both to chart a journey?At the ExxonMobil STEAM Festival, now underway at the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ), children and families can do exactly that. Through hands-on activities inspired by Qatar’s maritime heritage, the festival connects Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) with the knowledge and skills once used by sailors across the Arabian Gulf.One of the festival’s key activities is the NMoQ Roots of Routes zone, where participants make traditional tools including a model dhow and a kamal, a simple celestial navigation device once used by sailors to determine their position at sea.The journey begins with building a dhow. Participants can choose from three traditional types, each associated with different aspects of maritime life in Qatar and the Gulf.The Al Jalbut was commonly used for pearling, coastal fishing and transportation between coastal settlements. The Sanbouk was similarly used for pearling and fishing and remains familiar today through traditional dhow cruises along Doha’s Corniche. The Boom was designed for long-distance trade and transporting heavy cargo, including timber.After assembling their chosen dhow, participants move on to creating a kamal. Made from a small rectangular board attached to a cord, the kamal was used by sailors across the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean to estimate latitude by measuring the height of stars above the horizon. Participants learn how knots positioned along the cord correspond to different measurements, with facilitators guiding them through the process.According to NMoQ, the activity introduces children to an early form of celestial navigation, showing how sailors could use observations of the night sky and relatively simple equipment to travel considerable distances across the sea.Once their kamal is ready, participants put their new navigation skills to the test on a large floor map.They select one of three missions — Yellow, Green or Blue — and begin their journey aboard their chosen dhow. Using the kamal, participants determine a latitude reading and follow a series of clues before identifying the correct destination on the map. Their handmade dhow is then placed at the location they have calculated.For families, the activity turns concepts such as measurement, geography, astronomy and engineering into something that can be experienced first-hand.Rohit Gupta attended the festival with his family, including his daughter, Adhika, and joined her in making a dhow and kamal.He told Gulf Times that the activity is a fun way for children to learn while making something themselves, adding that the family planned to return to try another navigation mission.Apart from Roots of Routes, the festival features activities designed for different ages across several areas of the museum.The STEAM Lab includes the DADU Light Atelier for younger children and the ExxonMobil Research Qatar x DADU – Mangroves Lab, which introduces marine biology through activities inspired by Qatar’s coastal environment.Programmes are also taking place at NMoQ’s Digital and AI Centre and Library. These include Evolution of Navigation workshops, a Teen Tech Takeover focused on creating augmented-reality filters, a Silk Road board game, and storytelling sessions that introduce younger visitors to navigation, traditional boats, and maritime journeys.For older participants, Café Scientifique: Careers in STEAM connects young adults aged 16 and above to conversations about education and future career pathways in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.Running until November 28, the ExxonMobil STEAM Festival gives families the chance to encounter scientific ideas through familiar stories from Qatar’s heritage, from constructing a traditional dhow to learning how generations of sailors once looked to the stars to find their way home.

Profits surge at US oil giants amid Iran war supply shock

US petroleum giants ExxonMobil and Chevron released blowout profits on Friday, reflecting a major lift in business conditions from the Middle East war that easily offset negative effects at both companies.ExxonMobil's second-quarter profits more than doubled to $14.5bn on surging oil prices and record refining margins due to the US-Iran war.At Chevron, profits for the three-month period were $12.1bn, more than five times the level in the year-ago quarter.The results come on the heels of massive profits reported by other petroleum giants in the aftermath of Iran's virtual shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.While both companies returned billions of dollars in dividends and share repurchases, pleasing investors, the profits arrive at a sensitive time in the United States, where gasoline prices sit above the psychologically important $4 per gallon level and polling has shown US President Donald Trump increasingly vulnerable on economic issues.With revenues of $116bn, up 42%, ExxonMobil pointed to higher oil prices as a factor but described the level as "within historical ranges," citing the effects of reduced refining capacity and crude inventory releases as offsets that kept crude prices from rising more.But refining margins, the profit from gasoline and other products minus crude oil costs, "reached record levels in the quarter," ExxonMobil said in prepared remarks that cited a nearly nine percent drop in global capacity because of war-related dislocations."The market environment was clearly supportive. But market conditions alone do not explain results," said the company, which also touted "reliable operations, optimisation in advantaged assets and high-value products across our businesses."While the effects from the war mostly benefited ExxonMobil, damage to key liquefied natural gas assets in Qatar dented output.Chevron's results also benefited from increased refinery margins as well as higher crude prices, which came in at an average of $96.41 a barrel on international assets, up 64% from the year-ago period.Another boost compared with the year-ago period came from increased upstream production after Chevron completed the acquisition of Hess in July 2025.But Chevron also experienced some negative impacts from the war, pointing to reduced petroleum output from the "Partitioned Zone" between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait due to the war.Results were also dented by reduced international refining runs because of a 10% drop in crude oil inputs.The soaring profits come as polling has shown Trump increasingly vulnerable on pocketbook issues ahead of the November midterm elections. Roughly two-thirds of voters said that Trump's policies have worsened economic conditions, according to a CNN poll this week.Trump, a strong supporter of fossil fuel interests, has lashed out over gasoline prices, announcing in June that he was directing the Department of Justice to investigate any "gouging" perpetrated by the industry.ExxonMobil shares fell 1.5% in pre-market trading while Chevron dipped 0.3%.

Signed in Nicosia, the declaration represents an important milestone in advancing the development of Cyprus' offshore resources.
