The Qatar National Chess Team claimed the gold medal in Category E at the 46th World Chess Olympiad, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 15 to 28 September 2026, with the participation of 206 countries. The national team consisted of five players: Hamad Al Kuwari, Irfan Mohammed, Turki Al Kuwari, Khalid Al Jumaat, and Mohammed Jerbi. The Qatari players delivered impressive performances throughout the Olympiad and concluded their campaign by securing first place in their category. Qatar's participation also witnessed notable individual achievements. National team player Khalid Al Jumaat earned the title of Candidate Master (CM), while Mohammed Jerbi achieved the title of FIDE Master (FM). In addition, the players made significant gains in their international ratings. The Olympiad competition featured five divisions: A, B, C, D, and E. The Uzbekistan national team won the Open section title, followed by India in second place and Germany in third.On the administrative side, Mr. Mohammed Al Mudahka, Deputy President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and President of the Qatar Chess Association, participated in the FIDE General Assembly meetings held on the sidelines of the Olympiad. Several Qatari administrative officials also took part in the event, including Ms. Zhu Chen, FIDE Treasurer, and Mr. Hamad Al Tamimi, Advisor to the FIDE Events Commission and Executive Director of the Qatar Chess Association. Qatari international arbiters Yousef Khalil Al Mohannadi and Sara Al Muhannadi were also among the officiating team responsible for managing the Olympiad competitions.Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association, expressed his delight with the team’s success in the Samarkand Olympiad, praising the outstanding performances delivered by the players. He highlighted that the squad included a number of promising juniors and young players who succeeded in earning international titles and achieving important gains in the world rankings. Al Mudahka stated that winning the gold medal represents a valuable addition to the accomplishments of Qatari chess and will further strengthen the players’ standings in the FIDE rating list.He emphasized that the Qatar Chess Association will continue its efforts to develop the national teams through comprehensive preparation programs and participation in international tournaments, helping players prepare for future competitions and enhancing Qatar’s presence on the international chess stage. The Qatar National Team concluded its participation in the Samarkand Olympiad with a gold medal in Category E, along with several individual achievements, international titles, and rating gains. The results reflect the continued progress of Qatari chess talent and support the Association’s long-term vision of developing a new generation of players capable of competing successfully at the highest international level.

His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the OCA and the Croatian Olympic Committee, represented by its President, Dr Josip Varvodic, to strengthen their partnership and develop cooperation across various areas of sport. The MOU provides for the exchange of expertise and knowledge, the organisation of training and development programmes, and capacity-building in the design, preparation and maintenance of sports facilities. It also includes support for the establishment of a Croatian high-performance training centre. The MOU reflects the OCA’s commitment to expanding sports cooperation and the exchange of expertise with National Olympic Committees around the world.

Yusuf Abdurisag produced a winning goal even as talismanic Akram Afif missed from the spot as Qatar steered past Yemen 1-0 in their second group stage match of 27th Gulf Cup at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on Sunday.It was Qatar’s second straight win and took their tally to six points and top spot in Group B. The UAE, who have three points, were playing Bahrain (1pt) in their second game.Qatar, who are 86 places above Yemen in the FIFA world rankings, somehow lacked their usual attacking flair against Yemen although Abdurisag’s 64th-minute goal was as heart-warming as much as it was spectacular.Sultan Al Brake sent in a cross from the left which went past Abdurisag to Edmilson Junior on the right. The Brazilian quickly sent it back to Abdurisag in the centre inside the 6-yard box, who controlled the ball well to beat the rival goalkeeper, a defender alike.Qatar showed right intent from the very start but Afif fired one wide from a good position while a Karim Boudiaf header flew over the bar.Hassan Al Haydos, who came off the bench to score in Qatar’s 2-0 win over Bahrain on Thursday, started and tested Yemen goalkeeper Mohammed Aman with a long-range shot, but the keeper dived to make the save.An injury forced Issa Laye off early in the match, with Jassim Gaber coming on as his replacement.Goalkeeper Aman denied Afif twice before the half-hour mark. First, he stopped a volley from the Al Sadd star before blocking his shot after Al Haydos sent a long ball into the box.Ayoub Alawi failed to connect with a header from a promising position as the stalemate continued at the interval.Edmilson replaced Hashim Ali after the half time break.Meanwhile, Aman continued his brilliant goalkeeping, stopping Abdurisag’s header shortly after the interval. Boualem Khoukhi, who scored against Bahrain, then headed just wide of the right post.Abdurisag finally put Qatar ahead four minutes later. The Maroons could have doubled their lead soon, but Aman well-judged Afif’s kick from the spot while diving to his left.Pedro Miguel, who was pushed by Hamzah Ghaleb, had won the penalty following a corner kick.Khoukhi blocked Adel Abbas Qasem’s attempt as Yemen tried to make a late comeback, but Qatar held on for victory.

Pune will host the 2032 cycling Road World Championships, governing body UCI said on Wednesday, marking the first time the competition will take place in India. The city, located in the Indian state of Maharashtra, hosted the Pune Grand Tour in January, which was spread across 437 kilometres and four stages, featuring around 170 riders from 35 countries, including 12 locals.The race, won by New Zealander Luke Mudgway, was the first-ever, multi-stage road race in India - a UCI 2.2 classified international cycling event - and was a significant step for the sport in the country. Pune was bidding to host the world championships against Groningen and the Drenthe region of the Netherlands, which were awarded the 2034 edition of the competition. "For the first time ever, we will be in India, the country in the world with the most important population. We know how strong cycling is now in (Pune)," President David Lappartient said in an address at the UCI Congress in Montreal."As we received two wonderful bids, the UCI management committee decided to reward not only one, but two road world championships."  

Several teams rounded on the organisation of the Asian Games in Japan on Thursday, with Thailand likening it to a "chaotic" game of "musical chairs" and South Korea saying "they deserve a failing grade."The biggest issue at the Aichi-Nagoya Games has been a shortage of rooms for the 17,000 participants, while some athletes have complained of cramped accommodation. That was compounded by delays at airports and hours-long waits to board a cruise ship acting as a floating hotel.Erratic transport services have seen competitors' buses to training and venues turning up late or, in some cases, not at all.No traditional athletes' village has been built, as a cost-cutting measure. Teams have instead been staying in temporary container-style huts, hotels and the Costa Serena cruise ship moored in Nagoya port."It remains a problem from the beginning until now," Chalitrat Chandrubeksa, deputy secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, told AFP."The number of (rooms available on) cruise ships and hotels does not match our actual number of athletes," he added."On the peak day, we required 201 beds on the cruise ship but they provided only 170. "When athletes checked in and found their names missing from the list, they had to be placed somewhere else and when the new athletes arrived, the previous ones had to move out and look for other hotels."It's like musical chairs."Frustrated athletes have made their feelings known online, with complaints also about some of the food.More than 4,000 people are staying on the ship in Nagoya's port and 2,000 in the cramped wooden container huts, called "villas" by organisers."We are solving the problem by finding replacement accommodations ourselves," said Chalitrat. The shortages meant the Thailand team had to put some staff far away from the Games epicentre in the city of Nagoya."Our medical team has to stay about one hour 30 minutes from Nagoya," said Chalitrat."We had to rent additional vehicles from Tokyo so they could travel to look after the athletes."It has been chaotic." South Korea have consistently criticised the organisers and said Thursday the problems were "affecting athletes' performances", the news agency Yonhap reported.Aiming renewed fire at officials, Ryu Seung-min, president of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee, added: "If I were to give them a grade, it would be an F."He accused local organisers of "making excuses".- 'A lot of trouble' - Games organisers said they were working constantly to improve services for athletes."We have already increased shuttle buses as much as possible to satisfy athletes' needs," Asian Games organising committee spokesman Hiroshi Koshizuka told AFP.He admitted issues with transport had occurred but said "there had been no significant impact on the Games and no event has been delayed"."We have set up a system to respond to complaints and we will address them in a sincere manner going forward."But still the complaints keep coming. Steven Chen, spokesman for the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, the name for the Taiwan team, said previous experience prepared them for the worst.They booked 100 extra rooms at hotels in case there was a shortage of beds. "We were informed at the last minute before departure that there weren't enough beds. That was a major blow to every country," he said.Chen said that the "biggest headache" was with transport, with schedules frequently changing at the last minute. "When our team had an evening flight, they suddenly informed us that the afternoon bus to the airport was changed to pick us up in the morning, which caused us a lot of trouble," he said.

China's 13-year-old swimmer Yu Zidi went fastest in the heats as she closes in on a hat-trick of Asian Games golds on Wednesday -- and her team-mates say her stunning success is no longer a surprise.Yu has already won two golds in Tokyo in Games-record times and will go for a third title in the women's 400m individual medley after posting the fastest time in qualifying with 4min 39.43sec. The schoolgirl has been the talk of swimming since becoming the youngest medallist in world championships history last year with bronze for China's relay team aged just 12.She is shaping up to be a major medal threat at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Team-mate Zhang Yufei, a multiple Olympic gold medallist and world champion who was named the women's MVP of the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, said nothing Yu does is shocking any more."Everyone is thinking, 'Wow, what will her next result be? What will she do in her next competition?'," said Zhang, now 28."Expectations have become bigger than surprise. I hope she can withstand that pressure." Yu controlled her 400m IM heat from start to finish and topped qualifying 0.36sec ahead of Japan's Mio Narita.Yu has already won the 200m butterfly and 200m IM events this week. Zhang, who won the 10th Asian Games gold of her career this week with China's 4x100m freestyle relay team, said she was "quite shocked" when Yu first burst onto the scene."I only see her at the domestic trials and major international competitions each year," said Zhang."But every time I see her compete, I can see that she has improved again, and that makes me very happy."Yu's success at the Asian Games has caused a sensation back home in China. Her back story, such as being spotted by chance by a swimming coach at a water park, and her struggle with interviews, has gone viral.Zhang believes Yu has the potential to become the standard-bearer of Chinese swimming. "I hope this young girl can continue to maintain this momentum and give Chinese swimming hope," she said."We also want to see just how far she can go in the future."

Thai women's badminton player Pitchamon Opatniputh became the first known doping case at the Asian Games in Japan on Monday, testers said.The 19-year-old returned a positive sample for the banned substance furosemide and has been provisionally suspended, the International Testing Agency said.The teenager, who is ranked 18th in the world and regarded as a rising star back home, had been due to face China on Tuesday in the team event. The first full day of badminton action at Asia's biggest sporting spectacular was on Sunday."The athlete is prevented from competing, training, coaching or participating in any activity during the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026," the ITA said.The agency noted that Pitchamon can challenge the provisional suspension at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). "The athlete also has the right to request the analysis of the B-sample," it added.Furosemide can be used by competitors to excrete water for rapid weight loss.The sample was collected by the ITA during out-of-competition testing on September 17.
