Global luxury brands make their DJWE debut at Fifty One East

Several new brands have made their debut at the 22nd edition of the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE), taking place at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC). Some of these brands are at Fifty One East pavilion and include: Dennison, Montegrappa, U-Boat; Pierre Hermes and B&O. Established in 1874 and reimagined for today, Dennison has been in watchmaking for brands such as Rolex, Omega, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and more, including making cases for them. From the company that crafted cases for the world’s most distinguished watchmakers comes a new collection of timepieces befitting a storied name.**media[498214]**In collaboration with a small group of watch lovers, Emmanuel Gueit is leading the design of new Dennison watches. The world-renowned watch designer has designed iconic watches for Rolex, Piaget, and Audemars Piguet, including the Royal Oak Offshore. Emmanuel Gueit builds on an exciting history — a veritable treasure trove of inspiration. The first new collection under his design leadership, the A.L.D. Collection picks up where the brand left off when Dennison discontinued production in the 1960s, with cushion-case designs evocative of the era and stunning natural stone and sunray dials. Throughout Dennison’s history and still today, every Dennison watch features the A.L.D. hallmark. This is a testament to the founder, Aaron Lufkin Dennison, who was a pioneer of the watch industry. Another new brand at DJWE-2026 catching visitors’ attention is U-Boat, the famous Italian brand. Each U-BOAT creation is made in Tuscany, a land of great inspiration and style. Inspired by World War II military watches, these timepieces are a great treat for watch lovers. The U-BOAT Classico is a pure, recognisable and timeless design that, season after season, continues to evolve while remaining true to its identity.**media[498215]**With the new Classico U-46, Italo Fontana introduces a fresh interpretation of his most iconic creation. Following its world premiere at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, U-BOAT has officially unveiled Darkmoon Kama: a new vision of time where light does not illuminate but conceals. More than a watch, it is a visual and sensory experience that transforms the sun into the architect of darkness. First revealed in Geneva amid surprise and curiosity, the new Darkmoon Kama is now emerging as one of the boldest interpretations of Italo Fontana’s creative philosophy. A timepiece capable of changing like a living organism, reacting to sunlight through an invisible photochromic element that gradually transforms its very soul. Montegrappa, another Italian brand, has been making the world’s most magical pens since 1912. Combining luxurious materials, high craftsmanship, and unrivalled writing pleasure, Montegrappa’s quality, inventiveness, and individualist flair make its products a firm favourite of creatives, celebrities, and collectors. Montegrappa’s historical headquarters in the Venetian town of Bassano del Grappa houses an archive of more than 300 original, limited-edition silhouettes created over the last three decades. Italy’s oldest writing instrument maker presents a new limited edition in its Avanguardia series, honouring the visionary minds who dared to defy the unknown. Following the success of the Marconi Model 150, the series expands with an epic new chapter: the conquest of the skies. Montegrappa’s master artisans created a silver sculpture using lost-wax casting, echoing, with philological precision, the elaborate ornamentation of the original aerostat.

Toy festival taps demand for experience-based fun

The Qatar Toy Festival is drawing families with far more than the latest toys this summer, highlighting a growing appetite for experience-based entertainment through live performances, interactive games, creative workshops and character encounters at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC).  Running until July 31, the month-long event has returned bigger than ever, transforming the DECC into a vibrant indoor destination where children can meet their favourite characters, enjoy magical stage shows and explore dozens of attractions designed to keep them active and engaged during the school holidays. Organised by Visit Qatar, this year’s festival features an expanded programme that includes dancing and music performances, science demonstrations, celebrity appearances, mascot meet-and-greets, five themed islands, 10 retail stores and nearly 30 entertainment corners. The festival’s attractions range from giant inflatable playgrounds and obstacle courses to racing simulators, arcade games, creative stations and live productions, offering children opportunities to play, learn and interact beyond traditional toy shopping. Doha resident Connie M, who visited the festival with her two sons, said the event has become increasingly appealing because it encourages children to be active and creative, and to spend less time on electronic devices. “My two boys have spent most of their time trying the games, watching the live shows and taking part in the activities,” she said. “It’s the kind of experience they’ll remember long after the summer is over,” she added. She noted that the festival provides families with opportunities to spend quality time together while allowing children to explore a wide variety of activities.  “What makes this festival special is that it gives children the chance to do things together instead of simply asking for toys,” Connie said. “My sons have been laughing, exploring and trying new activities, and they were constantly moving from one attraction to another, which made the day much more enjoyable for all of us.” The event also highlights the growing popularity of interactive entertainment, with children participating in obstacle challenges, creative workshops, sports activities, role-playing experiences and live performances alongside toy shopping. Adding a new dimension this year is the Back-to-School exhibition during the festival’s final week. The programme will feature promotional offers, educational stage shows and family-friendly competitions aimed at helping children prepare for the new academic year.  At the School Bus zone, children can personalise backpacks, pencil cases, water bottles and other school items using stickers, markers and key chains, combining creativity with practical back-to-school preparations.

o noted that the transformation students experience after participating in the showcase is "significant and impactful", explaining that many initially view their projects as academic requirements, but leave seeing them as ideas with real potential for future development and application."When a student hears from an expert or a QF alumnus that their project has real potential, it changes the way they see both themselves and their future", he added."Giving students the opportunity to curate their booths and present their projects to the public fosters a stronger sense of ownership and responsibility toward their ideas, while building confidence that continues to shape them long after the showcase ends".

Beyond books: DIBF stalls offer visitors a canvas for creativity

The 35th edition of the Doha International Book Fair (DIBF) is proving to be more than a celebration of literature. For many visitors, the annual event, running until May 23 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC), has become an unexpected gateway to new hobbies, from the meditative strokes of Arabic calligraphy to the structured creativity of paint-by-numbers kits. Among the fair’s more distinctive participants is Nagi Alsaygh, who owns Resha and Hebr for Arabic Calligraphy at Al Wakrah Old Souq.**media[446967]**The Alsaygh name carries weight in Doha, he told Gulf Times on the sidelines of the book fair, explaining that it means goldsmith in Arabic. His father, Omar, ran a decades-old goldsmithing business in Doha. However, Alsaygh has chosen a different medium to preserve Qatari heritage. According to Alsaygh, he first fell in love with calligraphy as a secondary school student in Qatar, a passion he set aside during his university years in the US and a subsequent corporate career. It was his daughter who encouraged him to take up a hobby during retirement, prompting his return to calligraphy. He has since opened his shop and has been participating in the book fair for the past six years. “Calligraphy is deeply embedded in Qatari heritage and culture, and I feel a responsibility to help keep that tradition alive. This art form is also part of Qatar’s identity. And if I can help ensure it is not forgotten, then my shop has served its purpose,” Alsaygh emphasised. At his DIBF stall, visitors can commission personalised bookmarks and small calligraphic items, while also browsing an array of supplies, including nibs, pen holders, inks, gouaches, and paper. A wide collection of ornate feather dip pens has proven particularly popular, drawing customers who purchase them as decorative gifts rather than strictly as writing instruments. Alsaygh added that he has observed a resurgence of interest in calligraphy, especially among the youth. The creative offerings at this year’s fair extend to paint by numbers kits, a hobby long associated with children but now drawing a broader following. Soumia el-Meknassi, the general manager of the Cezanne Publishing stall from Morocco, said her customers span in age from children as young as six to seniors, with many young adults among the regulars. Her stall offers a variety of kits that recreate iconic works by masters, such as Van Gogh and Monet.**media[446966]**“Paint by numbers has evolved well beyond a children’s pastime. Today, it is for everyone, and that is what makes it so exciting. People of all ages have embraced them enthusiastically, and that tells you something about their appeal. With more and more paint by numbers kits appearing on the market, anyone can be an artist,” el-Meknassi explained. She noted that many customers return regularly for different kits, describing the activity as a form of “therapy through art.” Houda, who also hails from Morocco, manages the Harpers Books & Creativity stall. She said the kits offer children and young adults a productive alternative to screens, giving them space to explore their creativity. “Painting by numbers keeps children and young adults away from video games and electronic gadgets, and gives them a chance to create something with their own hands,” Houda said. Her stall draws a wide range of customers with kits featuring characters from popular Japanese manga and anime alongside classical paintings. She noted that the process is accessible to beginners. “The process is far simpler than it looks: colours are pre-matched and ready to use, removing any barrier for first-time painters. It is a creative outlet that does not demand any prior skill; you simply follow the numbers, and the painting takes shape,” she pointed out. Also on display inside another stall at the book fair are paint by diamond kits - a variation on the paint by numbers concept that uses small resin gems in place of paint to fill in numbered canvases, adding a tactile, mosaic-like dimension to the hobby.
