England's bid to strengthen their grip on the first Test against Pakistan was halted by bad weather as rain delayed the scheduled 1000 GMT start of the second day's play at Headingley on Thursday. The hosts were well-placed at 112-2, 59 runs behind, after skittling out Pakistan for just 171 in their first innings on Wednesday. This is England's first Test match since the international retirement of former captain Ben Stokes and the sacking of fellow Bazball architect Brendon McCullum as their red-ball coach. Joe Root, at the start of his second stint as full-time England captain, was 37 not out, with Jordan Cox -- replacing the injured Jacob Bethell at number three -- unbeaten on 23. England's strong position was mainly down to pacemen Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue, who shared all 10 Pakistan wickets between them after Root won the toss in the first of this three-match series. Recalled seamer Robinson became the first man to take a wicket with the first ball of a Test series in England on his way to an impressive return of 5-51 in 18 overs that included four of Pakistan's top five batsmen. No bowler who has played Test cricket for England has taken more Test wickets at a better average than Robinson (88 at 21.25). Tongue finished with 5-46 as Pakistan, missing injured captain Babar Azam, collapsed with only Abdullah Shafique (61) and Imam-ul-Haq (42) offering much resistance while sharing a third-wicket partnership of 91. England have won just two of their last 10 Tests, while it is 30 years since Pakistan last won a Test series in England. 

Harry Brook punished Pakistan for dropping him at the start of his innings on Thursday with a quickfire 91 that strengthened England's grip on the first Test at Headingley.England were 366-8 at stumps of a rain-marred second day, 195 runs ahead of Pakistan's meagre first-innings 171. The only sadness for the crowd was that neither of their local Yorkshire heroes were able to post a century, with skipper Joe Root out for 66 before Brook fell late in the day.Dan Lawrence, recalled after the international retirement of former captain Ben Stokes, made 51 and put on 120 with Brook in England's first Test of the post-Bazball era. Jordan Cox (73) and Root had earlier shared a third-wicket stand of exactly 150 before falling in quick succession to give Pakistan a glimmer of hope in the first of this three-Test series.Brook, however, should then have been out for one when he edged Khurram Shahzad only for diving Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha, leading the side in place of the injured Babar Azam, to drop the chance at second slip. Brook cashed in and was in sight of what would have been his first Test century at Headingley - and 11th in 39 matches overall - when he tried to turn left-arm spinner Ali Usman legside only for the ball to hit his leg before rattling the stumps.The 27-year-old faced just 93 balls, hitting 13 fours. It was the second time Brook, the number one batsman in the red-ball rankings, had been out in the 90s of a Test at Headingley following his 99 against India last year.Usman was the pick of an otherwise largely ineffective all-pace attack with 5-92 in 23 overs, his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket coming in just his third match. After dismissing three specialist batsmen, Usman removed tailenders Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson with successive deliveries before Jofra Archer survived the hat-trick ball.England, following a washed-out morning session, resumed on 112-2 after pacemen Robinson (5-51) and Josh Tongue (5-46) had shared all 10 Pakistan wickets between them on Wednesday.Root, at the start of his second stint as full-time England captain, was 37 not out with number three Cox - replacing the injured Jacob Bethell - unbeaten on 23. Cox was severe on anything loose and the 25-year-old marked his second Test with a maiden fifty when he turned Abbas past leg slip for his 10th boundary in 78 balls faced.That was the end of the over, and just as Robinson and Tongue had reached their five-wicket hauls Wednesday off successive deliveries, the next ball saw Root follow Cox to fifty by whipping Mohammad Ali through the legside for four. Cox was fortunate on 57 when Shahzad dropped a return catch off a miscued pull.Usman succeeded where the seamers had failed, however, when a fending Cox edged a sharply turning delivery to wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan. England's 198-3 became 202-4 when Root was lbw four balls later to give the persevering Shahzad his lone wicket of an expensive 19 overs costing 111 runs.The failure of Cox and Root to go on to a really big score arguably represented two more examples of the lack of ruthlessness that has plagued England during a run of seven defeats in their last nine Tests.But it made little difference Thursday, with Pakistan's plight summed up when Agha tried to run out the advancing Lawrence, after the ball rebounded off the batsman's pads, only for his throw from slip to hit the back of Rizwan's legs. BRIEF SCORES England 366 for 8 (Brook 91, Cox 73, Root 66, Lawrence 51, Usman 5-92) lead Pakistan 171 (Tongue 5-46, Robinson 5-51) by 195 runs 

India closed on victory in the opening Test after striking twice to reduce Sri Lanka to 175-6 at lunch on the final day in Galle on Wednesday. Set a target of 372 runs, Sri Lanka were 197 runs adrift with four wickets in hand. A rock-solid Sonal Dinusha was batting on 65 at lunch along with Keshara Nuwantha on eight. Resuming on an overnight score of 84-4, Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva dug deep alongside first-innings centurion Dinusha, adding 95 runs for the fifth wicket. Their stand, lasting for over two hours, ended when De Silva attempted a sweep shot off Ravindra Jadeja but ended up getting a top edge which was caught at short fine-leg by Manav Suthar. His 59 came off 151 balls and contained seven fours. India's perseverance paid off when Prasidh Krishna had wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella caught behind for 10. But the 25-year-old Dinusha, who struck his maiden Test hundred in the first innings, held firm and used his feet expertly against spin.Dinusha brought up his half-century with a six off Kuldeep Yadav.  

Devdutt Padikkal hit a polished 167 as India reached 364-5 at tea on a rain-hit day two of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Sunday. Resuming on their overnight score of 288-2, India lost three wickets -- all to Sri Lanka spinners -- in the shortened afternoon session. The entire first session was lost due to rain, and play got underway late after lunch. Padikkal, recalled to the side after almost two years as an injury replacement for Sai Sudharsan, impressed the most among the batsmen. His knock was the fourth-highest Test score by an Indian in Sri Lanka behind Sachin Tendulkar (203), Virender Sehwag (201 not out) and Shikhar Dhawan (190).Padikkal, 26, lost his wicket when he was stumped by Niroshan Dickwella off the bowling of Prabath Jayasuriya. His 167 came off 230 deliveries and contained 15 fours and a six. Debutant spinner Keshara Nuwantha claimed the other two wickets to fall in the session, accounting for Rishabh Pant (39) and K.L. Rahul (82). Rahul, who was forced to retire on 77 on day one due to cramps, could only add five more runs when he was caught at short leg by Nishan Fernando.A total of 17 overs had been lost on day one as well due to rain. Galle is hosting its 50th Test match, the first Asian ground to achieve the milestone. India have an impressive record against Sri Lanka, having not lost any Test against them since 2015.str/abh/lga

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said Bangladesh's stunning nine-wicket win over Australia in the first Test in Darwin was the country's best result in history but warned it can't be a one-off. Bangladesh recorded their first-ever Test win on Australian soil Sunday with a comprehensive victory over the world's top-ranked Test team."This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format," Najmul said. "Going forward we want to do something special in the future." Fresh from fielding a video call from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Najmul said he was determined to make sure his team played just as well in the second Test, which starts in the North Queensland city of Mackay on August 22. Leading into the Test in Darwin, Bangladesh lost a Test match to Zimbabwe by an innings and 85 runs, then were thrashed by a Cricket Australia XI in a warm-up game. "We need to be consistent as a team," Najmul said. "Against Zimbabwe we didn't play well but the confidence still was there because we won against Pakistan in Bangladesh (in May)."So that gives us confidence. Before we came here, we had the belief that we will play good cricket here." Najmul said he would stress to his team that they would need to play just as well in the second Test, as Australia were sure to bounce back. "As I said before this Test match, we wanted to play five days of good cricket, so nothing's changed," he said. "Going to the next Test match we need to follow the process, accept the challenge and enjoy those challenges."And they have a quality bowling attack, so we have to again play good cricket. "As a bowling unit we have to be disciplined again. "This match gives us confidence, but I'm not too much thinking about this one -- next match, we need to play again good cricket."Najmul said he was conscious what the win would mean to people back home. "In Bangladesh we all know the fans are really crazy about cricket," he said. "We've given something to them, at least some sort of happiness in their faces -- that's the beauty of this game. "In our culture we're pretty emotional sometimes. Sometimes, when we lose, they cried, so I think this win, we give them the happiest moment."

 A cricket tournament aimed at bringing together the Negombo community living in Qatar successfully concluded at Pearling School, Gharafa, on August 7, with seven teams taking part in the competition.  After a series of exciting and closely contested matches in Qatar Negombians Premier League (QNPL) 2026 indoor cricket tournament, Negombo Kings emerged as the champions of the tournament. Negombo Challengers, who put up an impressive performance in the final, secured the runners-up position.Individual awards were also presented to players based on their performances and contributions throughout the tournament.  Jeesan was named Batsman of the Tournament for his outstanding contribution with the bat throughout the competition.  Meanwhile, Nifras received the Bowler of the Tournament award for his impressive bowling performances and significant contribution to his team’s success.Jeesan also secured the prestigious Player of the Tournament award for his all-round performance and consistency throughout the tournament.  With seven teams participating, the tournament served not only as a platform for cricket but also as an opportunity to strengthen sportsmanship, community spirit and social unity among the Negombo community in Qatar.

England cricket chief Rob Key has left the door open for a dramatic international comeback by former Test captain Ben Stokes, who announced his shock retirement in late June.Key, the managing director of men's cricket for the England and Wales Cricket Board, was speaking a day after the ECB confirmed Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of the Test team.The appointment of the former New Zealand skipper, alongside a return to the Test captaincy for Joe Root, comes after a turbulent few weeks for England.First, Stokes announced he was quitting international cricket during play in the third Test against New Zealand -- the visitors won the match to clinch the series 2-1.The Durham all-rounder, 35, had been dropped for the second Test after breaking a team curfew at a London nightclub, the latest in a series of off-field incidents involving England players.Two weeks later coach Brendon McCullum was axed as the red-ball coach, bringing the curtain down on the "Bazball" era of ultra-attacking Test cricket he had led alongside Stokes.McCullum, another former New Zealand captain, remains in charge of England's white-ball teams. HEADLINE-GRABBING RETURN FOR STOKESSpeaking at Lord's on Friday, Key said he would not rule out a headline-grabbing return for Stokes, with a home Ashes series against Australia looming in 2027.Asked if Fleming had floated the idea, he said: "We haven't got round to that at the moment, but it would be a great story."Pressed on Stokes giving any indication of a change of heart, Key added: "No, he hasn't but I wouldn't be surprised. Anything's possible with Ben."No (bridges have been burned)... not at all. Not as far as I'm concerned."Fleming will not arrive in Britain until September, meaning he will not take charge of the three-match Test series against Pakistan, that starts in August.But Key played down concerns over Fleming's delayed start."My job is to get the best person," he said. "It wasn't a stipulation for any of the candidates that you had to be there for Pakistan."Had that been the case, that would have limited the field drastically." 

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg is open to the possibility of staging a Test against England in India.The three nations represent cricket's 'Big Three' -- the sport's most powerful nations -- but India are the financial powerhouse of the global game, fuelled by the mass enthusiasm for the sport in the world's most populous country.Any Australia-England fixture in India would need the backing of both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)."It's not something that we are planning, but it's open for consideration," Greenberg told the BBC in comments published Thursday. "We'd have to be open to considering all options."Our relationship with the ECB and the BCCI is very strong and clearly there are opportunities in India to put more content in certain areas."Australia and England played the first Test in cricket history in Melbourne in 1877 and next year they will meet at the Melbourne Cricket Ground for a one-off pink-ball fixture to mark the 150th anniversary of that inaugural clash. PLAYERS VOICE CONCERNSeveral former players are understood to have voiced concerns that the showpiece match will be a pink-ball affair but Greenberg said it was not his job "to be popular"."We wanted to get as many people for the game as possible," he said. "Playing that game in the day while people are at work and school would've made that difficult."Clearly there's a commercial imperative with broadcast rights back in the UK and the time zone. Pink-ball Tests for us are hugely advantageous in terms of audience."It will anger some of the traditionalists but we're in the business of getting more eyeballs on our game."But Greenberg said Cricket Australia were trying to strike a balance between celebrating a significant landmark in Test history and ensuring the longer format attracts new spectators."We're trying to balance celebrating 150 years of Test cricket between our two countries but also have an eye on the future and how we can evolve the sport," he added.

Pakistani spinner Mohammad Nawaz has been banned for three months over a doping violation, the International Cricket Council said Friday, backdating the punishment from May this year.The ICC said Nawaz tested positive during the men's T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka on February 7."Nawaz had tested positive for a Substance of Abuse (Carboxy-THC) under the ICC Anti-Doping Code following a doping test carried out after Pakistan's match against the Netherlands in Colombo," the ICC said.The ICC said Nawaz accepted the offence."With Nawaz accepting the sanction and agreeing to a substance abuse treatment programme, his provisional suspension was lifted after having served a two-and-a-half-month suspension, which is already over."Once the programme is complete, the suspension will ultimately be reduced to one month," said the ICC which is a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2006."Nawaz admitted the offence and demonstrated that the substance had been used out-of-competition and in a manner unrelated to sport performance," the ICC said.Nawaz's records from the match against the Netherlands on February 7 and in subsequent matches until 1 May 2026 have been disqualified.Nawaz has played six Tests, 44 one-day internationals and 98 T20 internationals for Pakistan but has not been selected for an ongoing training camp in the build-up to next year's World Cup. 

Sneh Rana and Deepti Sharma shared the last four wickets as India completed a 270-run thrashing of England to win the first women's Test at Lord's on Monday.England, set a record-breaking target of 457 for victory, were dismissed for 186 shortly before lunch on the final day of four.Rana took 4-42, removing Amy Jones for 54 and finishing the landmark match when she bowled Sophie Ecclestone for 50.Fellow spinner Sharma chipped in with the wickets of Issy Wong and Lauren Bell as England crumbled in front of a crowd that included India men's cricket great Sachin Tendulkar.India were dominant in all aspects of a game being played 142 years, and 150 matches, after Lord's staged its first men's Test and decades on from the first women's game of any kind at the London ground - a 1976 one-day international between England and Australia.Victory meant India finished their tour with joyous memories of Lord's, having been knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the group phase at the 'Home of Cricket' by eventual champions Australia.England, by contrast, struggled to adapt to the demands of the longer format in a match that started just days after their T20 World Cup final loss to Australia at Lord's on July 5.Their second-heaviest Test reverse, in terms of runs, and fourth defeat in five Tests was not the way England would have wanted to send off Tammy Beaumont and former captain Heather Knight in the veteran batters' final appearance before international retirement.The match was a personal triumph for India's Kranti Gaud and Yastika Bhatia, the first women to take five wickets and score a century respectively in a women's Test at Lord's.Gaud took a superb 5-37 in England's first-innings 170 and wicket-keeper Bhatia's 113 - her first century in any international format - was the cornerstone of India's imposing second-innings 341-7 declared.India captain Harmanpreet Kaur praised her top order, with opener Smriti Mandhana hitting fifties in both innings"In this Test match, the way they batted was outstanding to watch," said Kaur at the presentation ceremony."Bhatia is a great batter. I had a really strong feeling for her - that's why we put her in the eleven - and I'm really happy with the way she played."Seam bowler Gaud was named player of the match after also taking 2-54 in the second innings."Growing up I never imagined something like this would happen but the moment the Test started I wanted to get my name on the honours board," said Gaud."I stuck to what the coaches told me. My strength is to hit the right length and the ball moved and did its bit."'Exceptional India'Defeat left England still searching for their first win in a home women's Test since 2005."I'm disappointed all round, really," England coach Charlotte Edwards told Sky Sports."You come into such a historic Test match and occasion, which has been absolutely amazing. To then not play anywhere near our best over the four days..."The former England captain added: "A lot of credit has to go to India. I thought they were exceptional. They were really disciplined with bat and ball."Nat Sciver-Brunt, the current England skipper lamented a lack of time between formats but said: "As cricketers we have to be prepared for that and recover as best we can before preparing for a Test match."England resumed in dire straits at 130-6.The highest successful fourth-innings chase in any women's Test is Australia's 198 against England in Sydney in 2011.England's slim hopes of success rested with wicket-keeper Jones, 52 not out after completing her second fifty of the match.Jones, however, had added just two runs to her overnight total when she pulled Rana to mid-wicket.The tourists, in rare blemishes, dropped a couple of catches but the end was not long in coming to the vocal delight of India fans basking in another sun-drenched day at Lord's.Although Monday's crowd was sparse, the overall attendance across the four days of 37,846 was a new record for a women's Test.
