Veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim hit a glittering century as Bangladesh set Pakistan an imposing target of 427 to win the second Test after another commanding day for the hosts on Monday. Bangladesh posted 390 all out in their second innings on day three with Mushfiqur, who made 137, and Litton Das, who hit 69, putting together 123 runs for the fifth wicket. The 39-year-old Mushfiqur rolled back the years as he scored his 14th Test century, surpassing Mominul Haque's record of 13 for Bangladesh. Pakistan openers Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal survived the last two overs of the day without scoring before bad light ended play. The visitors will need a record chase to level the two-match series after Bangladesh won the opener. West Indies currently hold the record for the 418 they scored to beat Australia in Antigua in 2003, while Pakistan have never successfully chased more than 377. Starting the day on 110-3 with a lead of 156 runs, Bangladesh lost skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for 15 but Mushfiqur and Litton put the Pakistan bowlers to the test. Litton, who scored a century in the first innings, looked good for another big score but fell to Hasan Ali at deep third-man. Mushfiqur reached his century off 178 balls with a boundary off Mohammad Abbas -- the shot that moved him clear of Mominul into the history books. It was also his eighth Test century since 2022. Taijul Islam provided valuable lower-order support, adding 77 runs with Mushfiqur before off-spinner Sajid Khan dismissed him for 22. Mushfiqur was the last man out as he became Sajid's third wicket in the innings. Pakistan pace bowling coach Umar Gul, however, said his team will fight on. "We have two days left and we are mentally prepared. If we bat through the full duration, there is a chance to win - we aren't just looking for a draw," said Gul. "Two or three good partnerships will be very important. To chase 437, you have to be brave and play positive cricket. In cricket, anything is possible." Bangladesh spinner Taijul was confident the target would weigh on Pakistan. "When they see the target number, many things may work in their minds. Discipline is very important now," said Taijul. Pace bowler Khurram Shahzad took four 4-86 while Sajid claimed 3-126.

Former batting great Inzamam Ul Haq says Pakistan's current batsmen and bowlers can only improve their performances by playing more red ball cricket. Pakistan is currently placed eighth in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table among nine teams chiefly because of poor scores by its frontline batsmen in this WTC cycle as well as the previous one. In a career spanning more than two decades, Inzamam played 120 Tests scoring 8,830 runs, and 245 first-class matches in which he smashed 45 centuries. "They urgently need to play more domestic, longer-format cricket. And yes, it would be a good idea for Pakistan players to appear in county cricket also," Inzamam, 56, said during a candid chat. "If Pakistan players do not play the longer format regularly, their technical foundation cannot become strong, which explains the ongoing inconsistency in performances," he added. "Pakistan's first-class cricket used to be robust, allowing players to spend long durations at the crease to refine both their technique and mental fortitude. This is not the case now. Nowadays, young players predominantly confine themselves to T20 cricket, where the game ends in just a few overs. This prevents both batsmen and bowlers from developing comprehensive skills," he added. "If we (Pakistan players) do not play more first-class cricket, we cannot sustain our international performances. Pakistan's first-class cricket, the longer format, has been heavily compromised by the overwhelming focus on T20s and ODIs. That is the root cause of our current performance issues," he underlined. The 1992 World Cup hero said young players in India play more first-class cricket before making it to the national side. "Despite the immense popularity of the IPL, every young Indian player prioritizes playing the Ranji Trophy. Consequently, their domestic system remains robust, ensuring a steady influx of fresh talent," Inzamam said. Inzamam also pointed to Australia, where first-class competitions like the Sheffield Shield are held in high regard. This very foundation ensures that the Australian team maintains consistency and boasts a formidable bench strength, he said. "Pakistan does not have good bench strength at the moment," Inzamam said. "Pakistan must revert to a similar model to ensure comprehensive player development." INDIAN PLAYERS AND RANJI TROPHY"If you look closely, Indian players still have to play first-class cricket; everyone has to participate in the Ranji Trophy. It isn't just about the IPL. Naturally, the IPL is a massive global tournament that carries immense influence, and they certainly utilize it to select their T20 squads. However, their players are still required to go back and play the Ranji Trophy," Inzamam, who played his 100th Test against India in 2005, explained. Inzamam said Pakistan's current batting star Babar Azam is as impactful as retired players like Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad, Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan."We have to acknowledge Babar Azam has the same level of elite impact. I prefer to focus on the positives. There are current players I genuinely admire. I highly admire Babar Azam. Despite the intense criticism directed at him, I like his play and believe in his ability," he said. "It's all about the sheer impact a player leaves on a match and Babar does that. In the generations before and during my time, we had a continuous line of world-class batsmen: Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas, Saeed Anwar, Salim Malik, Ijaz Ahmed, followed by myself, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, and Amir Sohail. It was a regular, uninterrupted cycle of dominance," Inzamam said. When asked about two of his most admired Indian cricketers, Inzamam quickly mentioned the names of Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar. "Kapil Dev was one of the most intelligent bowlers I had ever faced. He got me out also once (in a World Cup match). Kapil did not rely purely on pace but he knew how to outsmart batsmen with his sharp cricketing mind and variations. He was a smart bowler. He could set up a batsman for dismissal. He was a very smart cricketer, I must say," Inzamam said. "Sachin Tendulkar was a proper cricketer. Sachin reached the pinnacle of world cricket through sheer dedication, discipline and relentless hard work."

Pakistan has agreed to play India in the Twenty20 cricket World Cup match scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka ‌on Sunday, Pakistan’s government said Monday, reversing ‌its decision to boycott ‍the game citing geopolitical tensions.The Pakistani government last week directed its team to boycott the Group A contest to show solidarity with Bangladesh, who were replaced in the tournament ‍by Scotland after their refusal to tour India over safety concerns.“In view of the outcomes achieved in multilateral discussions, as well as the request of friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to take the field on February 15, 2026, for its ‌scheduled fixture in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” the government said in a post on X.The Bangladesh Cricket Board Monday urged ‍Pakistan to reverse their decision to boycott ‌the match. Pakistan also received communications from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other member nations urging it to help in securing a resolution to the impasse, the government said in the statement.Pakistan, who are scheduled to play all their matches in Sri Lanka, would have forfeited two points if they had withdrawn from the match and also dealt a serious blow to the tournament since an India-Pakistan clash remains cricket’s greatest blockbuster. Indian captain Suryakumar ​Yadav said last week that ‌his team would travel to Colombo as planned, regardless of Pakistan’s decision on the fixture. New Delhi’s ties with ‍both Islamabad and Dhaka have deteriorated in recent months, with political strains increasingly spilling into cricket. India engaged in its worst conflict with Pakistan in decades in May. Ties with Bangladesh soured after then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to Delhi in 2024 after ​violent protests against her government. Bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan has long been suspended but an arrangement is in place enabling them to play at a neutral venue when either hosts a global tournament. India, the world’s top-ranked T20 team, are aiming to become the first side to successfully defend the title and the first hosts to win the tournament.‘All the pressure’ on Pakistan against USA in second WC clashUSA leg-spinner Mohammad Mohsin said Monday that “the pressure will be on Pakistan” when the teams lock horns in the T20 World Cup again, two years after the Americans inflicted a shock defeat on the former champions.But Pakistan quick bowler Salman Mirza insisted the stunning super over defeat in Dallas in the 2024 T20 World Cup would be firmly “in the past” when the two clash in Colombo Tuesday.The USA team gave tournament favourites India a big scare in their opening match in Mumbai, reducing them to 77-6 at one point, with Mohsin taking a wicket on his T20 World Cup debut, before losing by 29 runs. They are confident they can repeat their stunning upset of two years ago in the Group A encounter.“The pressure of losing the last game will be on Pakistan,” said Mohsin. Born and brought up playing cricket in Pakistan, Mohsin migrated to the US five years ago and warned the USA were a better team now than two years ago.“I have played with most of the players in this Pakistan team, so I have given my input to the team and we are a more skilled and confident team.”Mirza was confident the last defeat will not prey on the Pakistan players’ minds.“Winning and losing are part of the game, it happens in cricket,” Mirza said. “The defeat against the USA is now past and behind us.”Mirza admitted the smaller teams were dangerous opponents.“Until now all the matches are close and no team is small or big in this format,” said Mirza, who took 3-24 against the Netherlands. Pakistan may bring back experienced batsman Fakhar Zaman to replace Babar Azam who has been criticised for slow scoring. 

England white-ball captain Harry Brook Wednesday admitted it was "not the right thing to do" to get into an altercation with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand, but insisted "I've learnt from my mistakes".The 26-year-old was fined £30,000 ($40,000) by the England and Wales Cricket Board after the incident in Wellington the night before a one-day international.England lost the match the next day with Brook scoring just six."I've learnt from my mistakes," Brook told reporters in Colombo where England face Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series beginning Wednesday."I've reflected a lot and I know it wasn't the right thing to do," he said, speaking publicly for the first time about the incident on the tour that preceded the Ashes series, which England lost 4-1."I want to apologise to my team-mates, the fans and the ECB for putting them in a tricky situation," said Brook, who will lead England in next month's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka."It will never happen again. I'm extremely sorry."Controversy dogged England's Ashes series, with allegations of poor preparations, muddled team selection and a "drinking culture" in the England camp.England players were photographed spending hours in bars during a mid-series beach resort break, with a video of an apparently drunk Ben Duckett circulating on social media.The three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka will be followed by three Twenty20 internationals, England's final warm-ups before the T20 World Cup begins on February 7.Brook said the series would be a timely litmus test for his side, who have been searching for rhythm and results."It's important to get used to the conditions, the climate and the heat," Brook said. "We are looking forward to a competitive series."England's white-ball fortunes have nosedived since their forgettable 50-over World Cup campaign in India in 2023 where, as defending champions, they failed to make the semi-finals.Since then, they have lost six of their last seven bilateral series and endured a Champions Trophy to forget, bowing out after losing all three group games."We would like to be a little more consistent, absorb pressure and stay in the game for longer periods," Brook said."Yes, we've lost a few series, but I feel we're heading in the right direction".Sri Lanka are wrestling with selection issues ahead of co-hosting the World Cup.Charith Asalanka was removed as T20 captain late last year but continues to lead the 50-over side.Injury-prone strike bowler Dushmantha Chameera has been rested for this series, while there remains uncertainty over the availability of leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga."I would have liked to have both in the team," Asalanka said."But we have to look at the bigger picture, which is the World Cup. We haven't made a final call on Hasaranga yet."
