European Council President Antonio Costa has declared the European Union's full solidarity with the Gulf Cooperation Council states in the wake of what he described as Iran's unjustified attacks on the region, calling for a durable ceasefire, the restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and a comprehensive diplomatic settlement addressing Iran's destabilising behaviour.Speaking at a press conference in Doha — his third stop on a Gulf tour that has also taken him to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — Costa said his visit came at a critical moment, with a fragile ceasefire in place and the region still reeling from Iranian strikes that he said constituted a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Gulf states. "This is unacceptable," he stated.The EU president said the primary purpose of his tour was to listen to Gulf leaders, understand their reading of the situation, and deliver an unambiguous message: that Europe is a reliable partner the region can count on both now and in the future. He reaffirmed the bloc's commitment to the region's security and stability, and said several EU member states had already deployed military assets to support Gulf defences, alongside firm diplomatic and political backing.Antonio Costa identified two overriding priorities for the EU in the current crisis. The first is achieving a stable and lasting ceasefire that creates conditions for sustainable peace. The second is reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. He described the strait — along with the Red Sea — as a vital artery for global supply chains and trade, warning that the conflict had already inflicted severe damage on the world economy and would worsen considerably if no resolution was found.He said the EU had consistently called for de-escalation and respect for international law since the outset of the conflict, and expressed support for the US-Iran talks mediated by Pakistan as a foundation on which to build a lasting agreement. That agreement, he said, must address not only the nuclear question, but also Iran's ballistic missile programme, its support for regional proxies, and its closure of international shipping lanes. France and the United Kingdom, he noted, are working with global partners to establish a broad coalition to guarantee safe passage through the strait, and the EU intends to contribute actively to that effort.Responding to a question from the Qatar News Agency, Antonio Costa described Qatar as an "honest mediator" for peace and regional stability — a role it had demonstrated during the Gaza conflict — and said Doha was continuing its efforts to consolidate the ceasefire and lay the groundwork for negotiations on the broader range of outstanding issues. He added that Qatar was actively supporting freedom-of-navigation discussions, and praised the country's constructive engagement throughout the crisis.On Lebanon, Antonio Costa said Hezbollah posed an existential threat to the country and was a serious source of regional instability. He welcomed Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's move to restrict Hezbollah's military activities, and said empowering Beirut to disarm the group was the only sustainable path to stability. He also welcomed talks held in Washington between Lebanon and Israel as an important step that needed to yield concrete results.On EU-GCC relations more broadly, Antonio Costa said the current moment had only reinforced the importance of deeper cooperation, with free trade negotiations under way with some member states and strategic partnerships being developed with others. He expressed hope for a second EU-GCC summit before the year's end, to be held in the Gulf region.He closed with a sobering note, warning that the world was at a juncture where adherence to the rules-based international order was not optional — and that the alternative was chaos. 

The state of Qatar has reiterated its commitment to diplomacy and regional stability during high-level parliamentary meetings held in Istanbul, as part of the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). A delegation from Qatar’s Shura Council, led by His Excellency the Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanim, took part in coordination meetings of the Islamic and Asian parliamentary groups ahead of the formal opening of the assembly later on Wednesday. Speaking during the sessions, HE al-Ghanem said that the countries of the Gulf Co-operation Council, particularly the State of Qatar, have consistently pursued a policy of good neighbourliness and played constructive roles in mediation and de-escalation efforts. He added that these efforts have been particularly evident in facilitating dialogue related to tensions between Iran and Western nations, noting that “the Iranian leadership is well aware” of such roles. Al-Ghanem stressed that Gulf states have repeatedly affirmed that their territories would not be used as a launch point for military action against Iran. He called for evidence to support claims to the contrary, particularly allegations that missiles had been launched from Gulf territories, saying the absence of proof undermines such accusations. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining unified positions within parliamentary groupings, warning that amendments to a widely supported emergency proposal-submitted by Qatar in coordination with Arab states and other geopolitical blocs-could risk undermining consensus. The proposal, he said, is aimed at addressing current regional challenges. He expressed hope that it would receive broad backing, while cautioning that failure to adopt it could have negative consequences for the region. The meetings also focused on enhancing coordination among member states and reviewing organisational matters related to the assembly’s agenda. On the sidelines, al-Ghanem held talks with Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Hisham Badawi, during which both sides discussed ways to strengthen parliamentary co-operation and addressed issues of mutual interest. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani met at his office in the Amiri Diwan Wednesday with President of the European Council Antonio Costa and his accompanying delegation.  They discussed regional and international updates, particularly the developments in the Middle East, foremost among them the situation in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, in light of the ongoing escalation and its humanitarian and security repercussions.  The two sides also discussed the impact of this escalation on regional security, especially on the security of international maritime navigation and the stability of global energy markets. They emphasised the importance of maintaining the smooth flow of energy supplies and enhancing security and stability in vital maritime routes.  The meeting also considered ways to strengthen the strategic partnership between Qatar and the European Union, affirming Doha's role as a reliable partner in supporting global energy security, including the supply of liquefied natural gas to international markets.  Additionally, the two sides explored prospects for expanding bilateral co-operation, particularly in the energy, trade, and investment sectors, in a way that promotes mutual interests.    

His Excellency Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanim met Wednesday with ambassador of Canada to Qatar Karim Morcos. During the meeting, they reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to enhance them, particularly in the parliamentary field. The two sides also discussed the latest developments in the region. HE the Speaker stressed the gravity of Iran's attacks against Qatar and neighbouring countries, and the threat they pose to the region's security and stability. He emphasized the necessity of halting escalation and resorting to peaceful solutions and dialogue. In this context, al-Ghanim expressed his appreciation for Canada's supportive stance towards the State of Qatar and its condemnation of these attacks, which reflects a commitment to the principles of international law and support for international peace and security. For his part, the Canadian ambassador expressed his gratitude for the level of bilateral relations, affirming his country's keenness to develop them and enhance joint co-operation in various fields, including strategic dialogue and parliamentary coordination. At the same time, Morcos highlighted Canada's supportive stance towards Qatar, and its keenness to communicate and coordinate at high levels, reflecting the country's solidarity and commitment to supporting the security and stability of the region. 

The State of Qatar participated in the 43rd session of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, held Wednesday via videoconference.His Excellency Minister of State for Interior Affairs Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Faisal bin Mohammed Al-Thani led the State of Qatar's delegation participating in the session.During the meeting, HE Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Faisal bin Mohammed Al-Thani affirmed that the convening of this session comes amid the complex security conditions witnessed by the State of Qatar and countries in the region as a result of the ongoing war and the damages - both human and material - caused by the Iranian aggression against the affected Arab states. This has doubled the responsibilities placed on security agencies, which have exerted additional efforts to safeguard public security and confront security threats, carrying out their duties with competence and efficiency.His Excellency added that the current phase, with its complexities and overlapping interests and regional and international influences, necessitates that Arab countries intensify efforts to develop joint security cooperation frameworks, strengthen channels for exchanging information and expertise, and activate training and capacity-building initiatives in line with the nature of contemporary threats. This is in addition to enhancing the highest levels of security coordination and unifying efforts to preserve the security of our countries and protect the achievements of their peoples..His Excellency affirmed the State of Qatar's commitment to supporting all initiatives aimed at strengthening joint Arab action.Their Excellencies, and distinguished officials also discussed during the meeting various security issues and challenges facing Arab countries, in addition to reviewing the recommendations issued by previous conferences and meetings within the framework of the General Secretariat, the outcomes of joint meetings with Arab and international bodies, and ways to enhance security cooperation and coordination among Arab security agencies. 

The Committee on Social Affairs, Labor, and Housing of the Shura Council held a meeting on Wednesday, chaired by His Excellency Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim.During the meeting, the committee discussed the statement of the esteemed government regarding the proposal made by the Shura Council concerning "family upbringing," which had been referred to the committee for consideration.The committee decided to submit its report containing its opinion on the statement to the council.

Qatar's Industrial Production Index (IPI) rose to 107.4 points in January, up 6.3% month-on-month and 0.7% year-on-year, according to data from the National Planning Council.The index reflects activity across key industrial sectors, including mining and quarrying (82.46%), manufacturing (15.85%), electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (1.16%), and water supply (0.53%).The mining and quarrying sector index increased 7.8% compared to December 2025, driven by a 7.7% rise in crude oil and natural gas output, partially offset by a 6.3% decline in other mining activities.On an annual basis, the sector rose 1.4% compared to January 2025, supported by a 1.3% increase in hydrocarbon production, despite a 3.2% drop in other mining and quarrying activities.In the manufacturing sector, the index edged up 0.3% month-on-month, supported by higher output in chemicals and chemical products (2.3%) and printing and reproduction of recorded media (1.4%).However, several sub-sectors recorded declines, including cement and other non-metallic mineral products (6.3%), rubber and plastics (3.2%), refined petroleum products (1.7%), basic metals (1.3%), food products (0.8%), and beverages (0.6%).On an annual basis, manufacturing output fell 1.7% in January compared to the same month a year earlier, weighed by declines in refined petroleum products (10.5%), cement and other non-metallic mineral products (10.2%), printing and media reproduction (4.8%), and chemicals (0.9%).These declines were partially offset by increases in rubber and plastics (7.1%), basic metals (5.9%), food products (5.2%), and beverages (2.0%).Meanwhile, the electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply sector contracted 10.1% month-on-month and fell 17.8% year-on-year.The water supply sector declined 3.4% compared to December 2025 and decreased 2.0% on an annual basis. 

Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, confirmed that a joint Gulf-Russian-Jordanian ministerial meeting will be held on Monday via videoconference. In a statement issued Sunday, the GCC Secretary-General said the meeting with Jordan and Russia will address and discuss the repercussions of Iranian attacks on GCC member states and Jordan, as well as the serious developments in the region and their negative impacts on the wider world.

Qatar's merchandise trade balance, representing the difference between total exports and imports during February, recorded a surplus of QR13 bn, down by QR4.6bn (26.4%) compared with the same month in 2025, while it increased by QR0.9bn (7.1%) compared with January 2026.Data from the National Planning Council (NPC) revealed that total Qatari exports, including domestically produced goods and re-exports, reached approximately QR24.2bn, down 13.5% compared with February 2025, and down 3.6% compared with January 2026.On the other hand, total merchandise imports during February reached around QR11.2bn, up 8.3% compared with the same month in 2025, and down 13.6% compared with January 2026.Comparing February 2026 with February 2025, exports of oil gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons (including liquefied natural gas, condensates, propane, butane, etc.) totaled approximately QR12.9bn, down 21.8%, while exports of crude petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals reached around QR3.5bn, down 23.3%, and exports of non-crude petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals totaled roughly QR2.1 bn, down 5.8%.By main export destinations, China led Qatari exports during February 2026 with approximately QR4.5bn (18.6%) of total exports, followed by India with QR3.7bn (15.3%), and the United Arab Emirates with QR2.1bn (8.9%).Regarding imports, comparing February 2026 with the same month in 2025, motor vehicles and other vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons were the top merchandise import, totaling approximately QR1.2bn, up 31.5%, followed by jet engines, gas turbines, and other gas-powered turbines and their parts at approximately QR0.4bn, down 59.5%, then telephone or telegraph line apparatus, including network transmission equipment and parts at around QR0.3bn, up 38.9%.By main countries of origin, China led Qatar's imports in February 2026 with approximately QR2 bn (18%), followed by the US with QR1.3bn (11.4%), and the UAE with QR0.8bn (7.3%). 

EU Council President Antonio Costa said Tuesday he was confident Britain and ​the European Union would ‌reach a deal on UK participation ‌in the ⁠bloc's multi-billion-euro SAFE defence fund, despite talks ‌over the issue breaking down in November.A British plan ⁠to join the original 150 billion euro ($174 billion) SAFE fund fell through after the government of Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer refused to pay a financial contribution to join.However, Costa pointed to warmer ties between Britain and the EU, with ​Starmer consistently pushing for a post-Brexit "reset" with the bloc as grounds for hope of a deal.He also ‌highlighted how Britain and ⁠France were ​jointly leading Ukraine's "Coalition of the Willing" as ​a reason why he believed a deal would be reached."The new Labour government has started the reset, and the reset is going well," Costa said in a speech at Paris' Sciences Po university."It could take some weeks, months, but for sure, we will achieve an agreement with the UK on the SAFE issue," ‌he said.Last month, Starmer ‌said his government ⁠would consider applying to join a second possible ⁠EU SAFE fund. ⁠Under the initiative, the EU jointly borrowed money on financial markets to lend to countries in the bloc for defence.Asked about Costa's remarks, a British government source said the UK would only sign agreements that ​were in its national interest, and noted that British firms remained a vital part of defence supply chains across Europe.The source said the UK's defence industry continued to have access to SAFE under standard third-country terms, which allow British companies to participate in SAFE-funded arrangements for up to 35% of a ‌project's value. 

Qatar has participated in a meeting of the Nato Council with the Istanbul Co-operation Initiative countries, held at the alliance's headquarters in Brussels. The session was chaired by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) Deputy Secretary-General Radmila Shekerinska. Charge d'Affaires at Qatar's mission to the European Union and Nato, Sara bint Ahmed al-Mohannadi, represented the country at the meeting.  Addressing the meeting, she welcomed Nato's stance condemning Iranian attacks and expressing full solidarity with Qatar. She said that Doha had warned, since the start of the war in Gaza, of the risk of escalation leading to wider regional tensions.  Al-Mohannadi stated that since February 28, Qatar had been subjected to "shocking and unexpected" Iranian attacks, undermining trust – particularly as they originated from a neighbouring country, adding that the strikes targeted not only military sites but also critical infrastructure, including energy facilities. She reiterated that the attacks threaten global energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz and disrupt international aviation supply chains, with wider economic repercussions.  Al-Mohannadi reiterated Qatar’s strong condemnation of Iran's use of ballistic missiles and drones against its territory, calling it a flagrant violation of sovereignty and a serious escalation threatening regional stability.  The country also affirmed its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Al-Mohannadi added that Qatar had also condemned attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkiye, Azerbaijan and Cyprus.  She expressed full solidarity with these countries in safeguarding their sovereignty and security. She stressed that such attacks undermine mediation and dialogue efforts long supported by Qatar and Oman, while welcoming UN Security Council resolution 2817, which condemns the strikes and reaffirms respect for sovereignty and civilian protection.  The diplomat also welcomed a statement by European Union leaders and foreign ministers emphasising de-escalation, regional security, freedom of navigation, and energy security, and underlined that Qatar's partnerships with the United States and other allies remain "firm and unquestionable".
