French prodigy Seixas becomes youngest Giro di Lombardia winner

French prodigy Paul Seixas ended his breakout season as a history-making Monument winner with a "dream" victory at the Giro di Lombardia on Saturday.At 20 years and 16 days, Seixas became the youngest ever winner of the Classic of the Falling Leaves and the fourth-youngest winner of a Monument."It's crazy, I don't think I realise it. Everything went perfect," said a delighted Seixas."My team-mates did a great, awesome job. They all pushed more than what they had to do."I had amazing legs, I had the feeling today was a great day. I managed to make the difference at the moment I wanted to."And he added that "it was a dream" to win this race.Vuelta a Espana champion Enric Mas took second place, 48sec back, with Italian Giulio Ciccone rounding out the podium just over a minute behind the winner.Seixas launched a devastating attack on the Civiglio climb with around 19km of the 239km one-day classic remaining, and within a kilometre, he had dropped all of his remaining challengers.Olympic and European champion Remco Evenepoel was the first to flounder, followed shortly by pre-race favourite Isaac Del Toro and then world champion Brandon McNulty.Evenepoel and McNulty eventually came home in fourth and fifth.With cycling superstar Tadej Pogacar, the winner of the last five editions of Lombardia, missing due to injury, Seixas took his chance to end an incredible season as a Monument winner.It was only his third ever Monument - the five most prestigious one-day classics on the calendar - having finished seventh at Lombardia last year and second at Liege-Bastogne-Liege in April.Pogacar had won both of those.This success completes a remarkable first full season in the professional ranks for Seixas.He was fourth at the Tour de France - his debut Grand Tour - in July, having won the Tour of the Basque Country and La Fleche Wallonne earlier in the year.He had also impressed in second-placed finishes at Strade Bianche, Liege and the Montreal GP.But he endured a disappointing world championships last month, cramping up in the final stages and finishing 15th, although a week earlier he had won the time-trial bronze medal behind specialists Evenepoel and Filippo Ganna. NO LOOKING BACKThe race started five minutes behind schedule as the riders staged a brief protest to draw attention to safety concerns following a series of incidents involving vehicles on race routes.With the dominant Pogacar missing, it promised to be a thrilling race.Inside the final 60km, American Matteo Jorgenson and McNulty led a dangerous counter-attack behind the day's breakaway.Evenepoel's Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe team-mate Giulio Pellizzari led the chase and controlled the gap, ensuring the five counter-attackers were brought back 15km later.With 20km left, the breakaway riders had around 30sec on the peloton, now driven by McNulty's UAE Emirates XRG team-mate Adam Yates.Seixas then upped the pace and soon passed the remaining breakaway riders, while dropping Evenepoel and Del Toro.With 2km to go to the top of the Civiglio climb, only Tom Pidcock and Ciccone were able to follow Seixas.But within another 500 metres, and still 18km to ride, he was alone.Seixas had around 30sec over Ciccone and Mas over the top with the likes of Evenepoel, Del Toro and McNulty more than a minute adrift.And from there, he never looked back.Pidcock came home sixth, with Spanish veteran Pello Bilbao taking an impressive seventh place in his final race.

Asal, Orfi crowned Qatar Classic squash champions

Mostafa Asal produced a dominant performance to win his first Qatar Classic title, while 19-year-old Amina Orfi created history by becoming the youngest women’s World No.1 after a dramatic victory over Hania El Hammamy in Doha on Friday. Top seed Asal was at his imperious best in the men’s final, defeating fifth seed Victor Crouin 11-5, 11-6, 11-2 in just 36 minutes to claim the first major title of the PSA Squash Tour season. The Egyptian, the reigning world champion, controlled the contest from the opening exchanges and gave Crouin little opportunity to settle into the match. Asal used his power, variety and disguise to move the Frenchman around the court, taking a firm grip of the first game before producing seven successive points in the second after Crouin had opened with a 5-1 lead. Crouin never recovered as Asal moved within one game of the title. The World No.1 then raced into a 7-2 lead in the third and closed out the match without further trouble. “It’s amazing to win this title. It was the only one I was struggling with. As they say, third-time lucky,” Asal said. “I’m proud of myself; it’s been a tough week. It’s the first one of the season, and I just want to thank everyone who helped me get here today.” Crouin, who had enjoyed an impressive run to the final, was unable to reproduce the form that had taken him past Karim Gawad in the semi-finals. Earlier, Orfi produced one of the most dramatic finals in Qatar Classic history, saving two championship balls before beating defending champion El Hammamy 11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10 in a 107-minute thriller. The match appeared to be slipping away from El Hammamy after she rolled her right ankle while chasing a shot in the third game. She required treatment and returned to the court visibly struggling with her movement. Orfi took advantage to move within one game of the title, but El Hammamy showed remarkable resilience to level the match and force a deciding fifth game. The decider went point for point before Orfi earned two championship balls at 10-8. El Hammamy saved both, but the teenager held her nerve to finally close out the contest 12-10. The victory secured Orfi's second major achievement of the year after she became world champion and also made her the youngest player to reach the top of the women's world rankings. “It’s amazing. To be able to become World Champion and World No.1 in the same year, it’s amazing,” Orfi said. “It’s been a dream since I was young. I’m really happy right now.” Orfi said she drew on lessons from previous defeats by El Hammamy and Nour El Sherbini to stay composed during the decisive stages. “I’ve learned from past matches against Hania and Nour ElSherbini, just to keep my cool at the end and go for it, because if I don’t go for it, she will! It worked in the end today.”

Gohar survives heated Khafagy clash

Former World No. 1 Nouran Gohar set up a quarter-final showdown with arch-rival Hania El Hammamy after surviving a heated five-game duel with Egyptian compatriot Malak Khafagy at the Qatar Classic.Gohar, playing her first event since giving birth to her first child in April, had to dig deep to overcome Khafagy in an acrimonious affair that included more than 50 refereeing decisions over 91 minutes of chaotic play in Doha.The match descended into a scrappy, physical battle, with neither player able to find any sustained rhythm or accuracy. This was punctuated when Gohar required significant physio treatment after a heavy blow to the nose midway through the third game – an echo of the broken nose she sustained on this very court two years ago.After the players traded games deep into a dramatic decider, it was fifth seed Gohar who eventually prevailed, clinching victory by an 11-7, 9-11, 13-11, 12-14, 11-9 scoreline. “This is the part of being back that I didn’t miss.” Gohar said after the match. “I didn’t enjoy my squash today, but I did enjoy my resilience and mental toughness. I need to go through matches like these.Gohar will face off against El Hammamy for the 34th time on the PSA Squash Tour in quarter-finals, after the World No.1 defeated England’s Lucy Turmel by an 11-4, 11-8, 11-7 scoreline.Elsewhere, World No.9 Tinne Gilis fended off India’s teenage sensation Anahat Singh in five games to advance to her first Platinum quarter-final since the Windy City Open in February. The eighth seed was forced to battle back from 2-1 down to set up a quarter-final tie with World No. 5 Sivasangari Subramaniam, after the Malaysian proved too strong for Salma Hany.In the men’s event, World No. 1 Mostafa Asal overcame a superb showing from Yannick Wilhelmi, while World No. 13 Aly Abou Eleinen claimed a clinical three-game victory over Baptiste Masotti.World No. 9 Marwan ElShorbagy and World No. 19 Gregoire Marche were the final two players to secure wins on day two of action at the Khalifa International Squash Complex after defeating Curtis Malik and Timothy Brownell, respectively.

McIlroy returns to St. Jude to launch marathon PGA playoff push

Rory McIlroy is gearing up for a golf marathon as he targets a fourth US PGA Tour FedEx Cup crown, starting with the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, this week."I almost try to view the playoffs as one big, long tournament, like a 12-round event," McIlroy told reporters Wednesday as he prepared to tee it up at TPC Southwind after skipping the first playoff event last year."You've got to pace yourself," he added. "It's three long weeks. We're going from here to St. Louis to Atlanta ... I've tried to treat it like one big long golf tournament and sort of get into the rhythm of it and go from there."I've been lucky enough to do pretty well on these things over the years. So try to add another one to the list."McIlroy is 12th in the playoff standings and assured of playing the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta, where the field is winnowed to the top 30 on the list.He was ranked second in the playoff standings at this time last year when he opted out of the opening event and said "a few different things" went into making a different decision this year."I think having four weeks off going into the last two events of the year was probably going to be a little too much for me in terms of wanting to be competitive," he said."I think it's important to be here," he added. "It's the Tour's playoffs, and I think it's important for all the players to be here."World number one Scottie Scheffler tops the FedEx Cup standings and will be looking for a hot start in Memphis, where has finished in the top five in his past two starts."I have three tournaments, three good starts to kind of end the year. Definitely excited to get this week going," Scheffler said.He will tee off on Thursday alongside McIlroy, who hasn't played since he finished with a share of 40th in the British Open at Royal Birkdale in July.In fact, since winning a second straight Masters title in April, McIlroy has played just six PGA Tour events to take his total to 11 for the year.He is projected to come up one start short of the 15 US PGA events required to maintain his dual PGA Tour and DP World Tour membership.McIlroy said he was confident he would reach an agreement to maintain his membership without cramming another PGA Tour stop into a late-season schedule that includes half a dozen global events.He said he had had "productive" talks with PGA Tour commissioner Brian Rolapp on the matter."I think we've built up a really good relationship and we've had a couple of conversations last week about what I can do with the tour going forward to fulfill the obligation to keep my membership," he said.

Nouran Gohar is set to make her return to the PSA Squash Tour at this year’s QTerminals Qatar Classic, following a year away from competitive action after giving birth to her first child in April.

Gohar’s return takes centre stage as Asal hunts elusive Qatar Classic title

Former World Champion and World No.1 Nouran Gohar is set to make her highly anticipated return to the PSA Squash Tour after a year away from competitive action at this year’s QTerminals Qatar Classic following the birth of her first child in April this year. The draws for the first Platinum event of the new season have been released with Hania El Hammamy and Mostafa Asal topping the draws. El Hammamy is a two-time champion of the event, whilst Asal has never won in Qatar, falling in the final in each of the last two seasons. The event will once again take place at the famous Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex in Doha, an iconic venue in the professional squash world, from September 12 to 18. 2023 & 2025 champion El Hammamy will be looking to move to outright second in the most decorated female players in the event’s history with three titles with a win this season. She’s seeded to face Gohar in the quarter-finals, reigniting a rivalry that has produced some of the most intense and memorable matches in women’s squash history. El Hammamy will also be desperate to defend her title to hold off the advances of World No.2 Amina Orfi who is chasing down the World No.1 spot.Orfi, the reigning World Champion, found the form of her career at the end of last season, winning the World Championships and British Open back-to-back. Orfi has won all levels of title from Bronze up to the World Championships but has never won a Platinum level event. She’ll be looking to change that at the first opportunity in Doha and give herself a chance at becoming the No.1 ranked player in the world.Four-time finalist Nour ElSherbini and USA No.1 Olivia Weaver occupy the third and fourth seeding positions this year. ElSherbini is situated in the bottom half of the draw, therefore seeded to play Orfi in the semi-finals, which would see a repeat of the World Championships final, a final that will go down in history as one of the best ever. The top-half semi-final is seeded to see Weaver take on El Hammamy, a repeat of the Tournament of Champions final, in which the Egyptian recovered from 9-3 down in the fifth game to steal a first major title away from Weaver.On the men’s side, World No.1 Mostafa Asal once again leads the field as he targets the one major title that has so far eluded him. The Egyptian has finished runner-up in each of the last two editions of the Qatar Classic and will be determined to go one step further in 2026 as he bids to lift the prestigious trophy for the first time.Defending champion Paul Coll also returns to Doha looking to retain his title, but the New Zealander faces one of the toughest opening assignments in the draw. Coll has been handed a first-round clash with four-time Qatar Classic champion Mohamed ElShorbagy, setting up one of the standout matches of the opening round between two of the sport's biggest names.Former champions Diego Elias and Karim Gawad pose direct threats to the world’s No.1 and No.2. After missing a large portion of the 25/26 season, Elias still managed to win the El Gouna International Platinum event as well as a first Squash Tour Finals title. He’s seeded to play top seed Asal for the fifth time this year if the pair progress to the semi-finals. The four matches played in 2026 have an average match time of 93 minutes, meaning that the Doha crowd are likely to be in for another monumental clash.2016 champion Gawad features in the bottom half of the draw with No.2 seed Coll. However, to face Coll, Gawad will need to get past a potential meeting with World Junior Champion and World No.7 Mohamad Zakaria. The Egyptian has got the better of Gawad in their last three meetings and will be confident of scoring another victory over the former World Champion to reach another major event semi-final. Gawad will be fearful of his first round opponent, who will certainly have the home crowd behind him. Abdulla Al-Tamimi ruptured his achilies tendon in last year’s event but is back in action this season, looking to produce his best squash on his home court in his home city.Men’s Draw [1] Mostafa Asal (EGY) vs Nicolas Mueller (SUI)Yannick Wilhelmi (SUI) vs Greg Lobban (SCO)Juan Vargas (COL) vs Baptiste Masotti (FRA)Declan James (ENG) vs [8] Jonah Bryant (ENG)[7] Marwan ElShorbagy (ENG) vs Yahya Elnawasany (EGY)Curtis Malik (ENG) vs Mohamed Abouelghar (EGY)Miguel Rodriguez (COL) vs Gregoire Marche (FRA)Timothy Brownell (USA) vs [3] Diego Elias (PER)[4] Karim Gawad (EGY) vs [WC] Abdulla Al-Tamimi (QAT)[WC] Salem Al-Malki (QAT) vs Melvil Scianimanico (FRA)Youssef Soliman (EGY) vs Eain Yow Ng (MAS)Aly Abou Eleinen (EGY) vs [6] Mohamad Zakaria (EGY)[5] Victor Crouin (FRA) vs Fares Dessouky (EGY)Kareem El Torkey (EGY) vs Noor Zaman (PAK)Abhay Singh (IND) vs Dimitri Steinmann (SUI)Mohamed ElShorbagy (ENG) vs [2] Paul Coll Women’s Draw[1] Hania El Hammamy (EGY) vs Hana Moataz (EGY)Lucy Turmel (ENG) vs Tinne Gilis (BEL)Aira Azman (MAS) vs Malak Khafagy (EGY)Kenzy Ayman (EGY) vs [6] Nouran Gohar (EGY Michael Thorbjornsen sank a 26-foot putt on the final green to secure his first PGA Tour victory at the Rocket Classic on Sunday, pulling clear of a crowded field including Xander Schauffele to win by two shots.American Thorbjornsen, 24, started the final day in Detroit four shots off the lead, but made a string of birdies on the back nine for a day's-best round of seven-under par 63 as those around him spurned chances."I don't know how to feel right now. It was such a battle out there, playing with some great players. Everyone, I feel like, was in the mix after nine holes," said Thorbjornsen."Just really happy I stuck to the process, committed to hitting certain shots, and just very, very happy with how I played."Having reached the turn two behind co-leader Schauffele, Thorbjornsen birdied 10 with a pinpoint wedge, chipped in from the rough on 12, and birdied 14 after a fine pitch to within inches of the hole.His tee shot on par-three 15 set up a tap-in birdie. But he saved the best for last, with a superb long right-to-left putt that curled in on the final green to seal the tournament.Thorbjornsen finished on 18-under 262, followed by Schauffele on 16-under with a highly respectable final round of 65.The two-time major winner and Olympic gold medallist had surged early on Sunday but left several putts short down the closing stretch, including an eagle chance on 14 that would have restored his lead.Overnight leader Davis Riley had an up-and-down final round, recovering from three bogeys on the front nine to climb back within a shot of Thorbjornsen before bogeying 17.He finished third on 15-under, with Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard - who had tied the course record with a 61 on Saturday - fourth on 14-under.Despite his final-hole heroics, it was ultimately comfortable for Thorbjornsen in his first PGA Tour win after having twice finished as runner-up since turning pro in June 2024.The former college star at Stanford University had also come close to winning the Travelers Championship as an amateur in 2022."I feel like I've been out here for a few years now. You just have to block it all out," he told CBS Sports."Junior golf to amateur golf, amateur golf to professional golf, they're completely different stages, and it's going to take some time to get used to playing where you're playing at."

Molinari leads Dubai Desert Classic as McIlroy struggles

Francesco Molinari powered into a two-shot lead after the first day of the Dubai Desert Classic Thursday, as four-time champion Rory McIlroy stumbled to an over-par round.Former British Open champion Molinari, now 418th in the world rankings, made eight birdies in a seven-under par 65.The 43-year-old Italian is two shots clear of Sweden's Mikael Lindberg, with Swiss player Joel Girrbach and South African JC Ritchie a stroke further back.It was Molinari's lowest round on the European Tour since January 2024."It's been a long time. I've changed everything and then I've changed back," said the 2018 Ryder Cup winner, who has not won a professional title since the Arnold Palmer Invitational seven years ago."Not super unexpected but I wasn't expecting a score like that. Last week I felt very rusty, so I was hoping it would be very good prep for this week."Molinari will have plenty of work to do to hang onto his lead with a host of top players in the field this week.Shane Lowry and defending champion Tyrrell Hatton, who played starring roles in Europe's Ryder Cup triumph at Bethpage Black last year, both made solid starts with two-under rounds of 70."Standing here right now, I'm very happy with that score," said England's Hatton after his first competitive round of the year."It was pretty tough this morning. Feel like I hit some pretty scruffy golf shots, which in some ways is to be expected."It was a disappointing day though for McIlroy, who hit his approach shot on the par-five 18th hole into the water en route to a closing double-bogey.The Masters champion had earlier mixed three birdies with two bogeys.McIlroy will need to make a move on Friday to get into contention for a fifth title in the event, as will world number three Tommy Fleetwood who also carded a one-over 73.
