Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said on Tuesday "no decision" had been made on Mykhailo Mudryk's future but added the winger could play in pre-season after returning from a doping ban.Ukrainian international Mudryk was suspended for four years after failing a 2024 drug test, but has won an appeal and was permitted on Friday to resume his football career.The 25-year-old has not played since November 2024 and there have been rumours that Chelsea could sanction a loan move to bring him up to speed, or even a permanent transfer.Asked about those possibilities in Hong Kong on Tuesday ahead of his side's friendly against Juventus, Alonso said: "No decision made."Everything has happened so quick, so the main thing is that we were thinking about the person, to feel that he was back in the group dynamic, part of the team."And we need to assess, but for sure... it is a special case with him, so we need to be sensitive."Mudryk's ban came after testing positive for a low concentration of the prohibited substance meldonium.He filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and rule changes in the interim mean that if his test produced the same result now, he would not have faced charges.Asked if Mudryk could play in Wednesday's game against Juventus, Alonso answered in the affirmative."Yesterday was more about the feelings, about the emotions to be back with the team, more than to assess the fitness level," the Spaniard said."But yes, he could play. Maybe 90 minutes (is) too early. But he can be selected."Mudryk took part in an open training session at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday evening, drawing a loud cheer from fans when he found the net in a drill.Alonso said he was also "looking forward to welcoming" Jordan Henderson after the England midfielder signed from Premier League rivals Brentford on Monday.However, "we need to assess because of the injury he had, how long it will take to be fit".Henderson broke his arm in a freak injury sustained while celebrating England's win over Mexico at the World Cup.The 36-year-old has followed international teammate Danny Welbeck, 35, to Stamford Bridge, in a shift from the Blues' long-held strategy of snapping up younger talent on lengthy contracts.Juventus are looking to improve on last season's disappointing sixth-placed finish in Serie A and announced the signing of Bosnian teenager Kerim Alajbegovic on Sunday alongside the return of French striker Randal Kolo Muani to the club."To have new players in our team, we are very (happy) about them. We have needed them for a long time," manager Luciano Spalletti told a news conference on Tuesday."We know they are strong, and we just need to make them settle," he said through an interpreter.Chelsea's pre-season tour so far has comprised two friendlies in Australia - a see-saw 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers and a 2-1 defeat to London rivals Tottenham.After Juventus, they play Italian giants AC Milan in Jakarta and Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia before heading home for a final warm-up against Spain's Real Sociedad.They face Fulham at Craven Cottage in their opening league game on August 24.Juventus travel to Australia for friendlies against fellow Italians Inter Milan and Palermo before kicking off the Serie A season with a trip to Frosinone on August 23. 

Brazil striker Richarlison scored a 90th-minute winner and club record signing Sandro Tonali got his first goal as 10-man Tottenham beat London rivals Chelsea 2-1 in a feisty pre-season friendly in Sydney on Saturday.Both sides fielded strong line-ups and Spurs struck first on 19 minutes through Tonali's deflected strike before Estevao levelled the scores barely two minutes later.Tottenham defender Kevin Danso was given a straight red card just three minutes after coming off the bench at the break for bringing down Joao Pedro, with Chelsea dominating proceedings in the second half.But in front of 80,363 fans at Stadium Australia, they failed to capitalise and Spurs stunned them with a late winner.The loss means new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will head to Hong Kong for a clash with Juventus on Wednesday on the back of his first defeat, following a 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers last week.The Spaniard has overseen a string of high-profile signings since being appointed, headlined by Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, as he bids to rejuvenate the club after their disappointing 10th in the Premier League last season.Spurs, who fared even worse, coming 17th to narrowly miss relegation, have also been on a spending spree with Matheus Fernandes arriving from West Ham and Tonali from Newcastle.They fly home after a 2-0 win over Auckland FC and 1-1 draw with Sydney FC.Most of Chelsea's close-season signings have yet to link up with the squad, including Rogers.But right-back Marco Palestra, who joined from Atalanta, got his first minutes while Cole Palmer and Estevao started after a slew of youngsters were used against Western Sydney Wanderers.Tottenham midfielder Fernandes, who missed the Sydney game with "fatigue in his calf muscle", was again absent, as was James Maddison with a "small problem". But Tonali made his maiden start along with fellow new recruit Andy Robertson.After a cagey start, tempers flared when Conor Gallagher hacked down Chelsea's Dario Essugo in the 10th minute with players pushing and shoving each other. Gallagher was shown a yellow card and Essugo continued.Spurs broke the deadlock after a nice break down the right from Manor Solomon, who fed Tonali on the edge of the box with his shot taking a deflection.But it was a short-lived lead as Estevao headed home at the far post after Romeo Lavia broke free from midfield and they went to the break at 1-1 with Spurs having the better half.Danso's brain-fade allowed Chelsea to dominate the second-half with Estevao rattling the crossbar among a slew of chances.But, in a worry for Alonso, they failed to make the most of the extra man and Spurs stole their thunder when Richarlison side-footed home at the death.  

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso on Monday said Morgan Rogers was "a great signing" who would make the club more competitive and expected the England midfielder to "link really well" with Cole Palmer.The versatile Rogers was signed from Aston Villa last week for £117mn ($157mn), a record for a British player.Alonso said he was "delighted" to lure the 23-year-old to Stamford Bridge ahead of his first match in charge, a pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday."It's a great signing. I think that in that position, we needed an important player, and I'm sure that there were not many more better options than Morgan," the Spaniard told reporters."So we are delighted. It means a lot for everyone."The swoop is a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season and missed out on Europe.Alonso will have to find a way to accommodate Rogers, Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and another close-season signing, Geovany Quenda, into his attacking midfield positions."I have a plan. I have an idea. I can see them linking really well," Alonso said on how Morgan could fit in alongside Palmer. The pair are close friends who have similar playing styles."You need to have a good mix, good stability players, and players that can play with more freedom," Alonso added."And if we get that balance right, and we get those special players in the right positions, with good control, I think that we will be more competitive with the ball and against the ball."Chelsea had reportedly been chasing Rogers for two years and beat Arsenal to his signature after the Premier League champions refused to match the eye-watering fee demanded by Villa.His transfer surpassed the previous record fee for a British player set by Manchester City when they signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million earlier this month."I think that one of his best qualities is that he's flexible," Alonso said of Rogers, who is not on their pre-season trip to Australia after helping England to finish third at the World Cup."I think that he can play in that pocket position, close to the striker, close to the turn, but he's played as well on the right. But I think more coming from the left."We (will) play him where he feels he is enjoying his game, that he feels his flow. I'm sure that he will have good connections with the other players that he can have around him."So if we get those connections right, those little associations between them that they look for each other and they connect well, I think that it will be a great step forward in the quality of our game."Chelsea will also play fellow London club Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in Sydney, before flying to Hong Kong for a match against Juventus on August 5. 

Chelsea signed England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on Tuesday in a deal British media valued at £117mn ($157mn), a price that smashed the transfer record for a British player."The 23-year-old forward has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2033," the London club posted on their web site.Rogers passed a medical on Monday following his return from the World Cup in North America."I'm so excited," said Rogers. "For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I've always admired since I was a kid," Rogers was quoted as saying by the club."I'm really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we've got and where the club is heading. That's why I'm here and I can't wait to get started."The transfer surpasses the previous record fee for a British player set by Manchester City when they signed England midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116mn earlier in July.Rogers is the most expensive signing in Chelsea's history, eclipsing the £107mn paid to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.The swoop is a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, who convinced Rogers to leave Villa even though - unlike his former club - the west Londoners will not play in the Champions League in the coming season.Chelsea had been chasing Rogers for two years and beat Arsenal to his signature after the Premier League champions refused to match the eye-watering fee demanded by Villa.Rogers' departure is another blow for Villa boss Unai Emery after Youri Tielemans' move to Manchester United and Lucas Digne's expected switch to Paris Saint-Germain."A player with impeccable behaviour and commitment, Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the football club for both his service to the club and for his future career," said Villa on their website.Championship side Middlesbrough will receive 20 percent of the fee due to a sell-on clause in the deal when they sold Rogers in Villa in 2024.Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa and was a key figure in their Europa League final victory over Freiburg in May.'Cold' celebrationHe enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, netting 14 times and producing 11 assists in 55 appearances."He will always remain a core part of our recent great moments and memories," said Villa.Chelsea's new manager Xabi Alonso will have to find a way to fit Rogers, Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Estevao Willian and another close-season signing Geovany Quenda into his attacking midfield positions.Following Rogers' arrival at Stamford Bridge, Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho is expected to be sold by Chelsea before the transfer window shuts.Rogers is close friends with Palmer after their time together in Manchester City's youth academy.Palmer's famous 'cold' celebration was inspired by Rogers, who first struck the pose as a Middlesbrough player.Rogers' signing shows Chelsea can still attract top-class signings despite their failure to qualify for Europe after a dismal 10th place finish in the Premier League last season.Rogers will link up with Chelsea after taking a break following his role in England's run to the World Cup semi-finals. 

Chelsea appointed Xabi Alonso as the club's manager on Sunday on a four-year deal from next season with the Spaniard the latest coach tasked with turning around the club's fortunes. The Blues lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City on Saturday and lie ninth in the Premier League with two games of the campaign to go. Alonso rose to prominence as one of Europe's brightest coaches by guiding Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten German league and cup double in the 2023/24 season. However, he lasted just seven months in the Real Madrid hotseat. Appointed last year, he departed the Spanish giants in January. "Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager of the men's team," Chelsea said in a statement. "The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge." Alonso faces a huge task to get Chelsea back in the running for major honours. Chelsea did win the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League last year but have little else to show for well over one billion pounds ($1.35 billion) of spending on players since US consortium BlueCo took over in 2022 following Roman Abramovich's trophy-laden ownership of the club. Defeat at Wembley on Saturday means they have now gone eight seasons without a domestic trophy. "Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club," said Alonso. "From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies. There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies." Fans have continuously protested against BlueCo, who have embarked on a scattergun approach to hoovering up young talent from across the globe. That policy has secured some notable successes such as England international Cole Palmer. But a lack of experience in both the playing squad and the coaching staff has been blamed for a lack of consistency. Alonso becomes the sixth permanent manager to take charge at Stamford Bridge in the past four years after Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior. Rosenior was sacked after less than four months in charge in April after Chelsea lost five consecutive league games without scoring for the first time since 1912. Interim boss Calum McFarlane guided them into the FA Cup final, but Chelsea are winless in seven league games and at risk of missing out on European football entirely next season. Alonso has a point to prove after a turbulent short spell in Madrid, but his arrival is a coup for Chelsea's much-criticised owners. Many Liverpool fans were desperate for him to return to Anfield, where he starred for five years as a player between 2004 and 2009, to succeed the under-fire Arne Slot.

Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella believes former manager Enzo Maresca’s departure and the club’s policy of signing young players is behind the London side’s recent struggles. Maresca left Stamford Bridge by mutual consent on New Year’s Day after just 18 months in charge following a breakdown in his relationship with the London side’s hierarchy. Chelsea were then fifth in the Premier League table – 15 points adrift of leaders Arsenal. The Italian was initially replaced by Under-21s coach Calum McFarlane before current manager Liam Rosenior arrived from Strasbourg – a club also owned by Blues supremo Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Chelsea, however, have won only four of their last 12 matches, suffering a humiliating 8-2 aggregate defeat by holders Paris Saint-Germain as they crashed out of the Champions League and slipping to sixth in the Premier League. While Chelsea and Spain defender Cucurella said Rosenior’s “football ideas are good”, he believes changing managers in mid-season has caused “instability” at Stamford Bridge. “These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision,” the 27-year-old told the Athletic. “To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season. The instability around the club comes from this, in a nutshell. We had a caretaker manager first, then a new manager, with new ideas and no time to work on them. It is what it is.” Cucurella also believes Chelsea’s policy of primarily recruiting younger players has left them lacking the experience to compete for trophies “We have a good core of players,” he added. “The foundations are there. But to fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or the Champions League, you need more. Signing young players only might complicate achieving those goals. Against PSG, we lacked players that had gone through situations like that.” 

Arsenal moved a step closer to the Premier League title as Max Dowman became the competition’ youngest ever goalscorer in a dramatic 2-0 win against Everton, while Chelsea’s top four bid was dented a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle. Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to break down obdurate Everton until the closing moments at the Emirates Stadium. But Sweden forward Viktor Gyokeres finally found a way through in the 89th minute, with a helping hand from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Pickford completely missed Dowman’s cross and Piero Hincapie bundled the ball back into the six-yard box for Gyokeres to tap into the empty net. The ensuing scenes of delirium on the pitch and in the stands underlined the significance of Arsenal’s fourth successive league win. There was still time for Dowman to run the length of the pitch and slot home with Pickford nowhere to be seen after coming up for an Everton corner that ended in a rapid Arsenal counter-attack in the final seconds. Dowman, aged just 16, is the youngest scorer in the history of the Premier League, as well as Arsenal’s youngest scorer. Gyokeres on Dowman’s said: “It’s incredible. You can see how he plays. He stays so calm and without fear every time he gets the ball. He takes the right decision most of the time as well and with the goal, he definitely took the right one. He’s an amazing player, it was a great goal for him and I’m so happy for him.” The Gunners are now 10 points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who were facing West Ham at the London Stadium in the day’s late kick-off. Arsenal, trophyless since 2020, are hunting a first English title in 22 years. The quadruple chasers rode their luck to beat Everton despite a disjointed performance, adding to the mounting feeling that they will be one of the least stylistically impressive champions in recent memory if they do take the crown. But Arteta and company won’t care about that ahead of a huge week. The Gunners have a Champions League last-16 second leg against Bayer Leverkusen next week with the tie level at 1-1 before heading to Wembley to face City in the League Cup final. Arsenal don’t play in the league again until April 11 when they meet Bournemouth. City’s clash with West Ham is the first of their two games in hand on Arsenal, with Pep Guardiola’s men also hosting the leaders in April. City must bounce back from their midweek Champions League last-16 first leg defeat at Real Madrid in a match of significance at both ends of the table. West Ham sit in the relegation zone but can leapfrog Nottingham Forest and Tottenham with victory over City. Fifth-placed Chelsea were beaten by Anthony Gordon’s goal at Stamford Bridge to round off a painful week. Thrashed 5-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 first leg, Liam Rosenior’s side were breached in the 18th minute when Tino Livramento’s pass allowed Joe Willock to burst clear and tee up Gordon for a composed finish. Chelsea trail Aston Villa and Manchester United by three points having played a game more than their top-four rivals. Brighton beat Sunderland 1-0 to climb into the top half of the Premier League, while second-bottom Burnley held Bournemouth in a 0-0 draw. Sunderland were unbeaten in their first 11 home games back in the top flight but have now lost their last three at the Stadium of Light to slip to 12th. Yankuba Minteh scored the only goal when his shot somehow squeezed past goalkeeper Melker Ellborg at his near post. Brighton move above the Black Cats on goal difference and into 10th. The stalemate at Turf Moor did little for either side as Burnley slip closer to relegation and Bournemouth failed to move in on the European places. The Clarets are eight points adrift of safety with eight games remaining. Bournemouth remain in ninth, three points behind Brentford in what is likely to be the final European spot in seventh. 

Mikel Arteta has hit back at critics of Arsenal's dependence on set-pieces, saying he is disappointed the Premier League leaders do not score even more goals from dead-ball situations.Arteta's side have established a five-point lead at the top of the league thanks in large part to their success from set-pieces. They equalled the Premier League single-season record for goals from corners with two in Sunday's 2-1 win over Chelsea to reach 16 for the campaign.But Arsenal's excellence since Nicolas Jover took over as set-piece coach has sparked criticism of their reliance on the tactic. The debate on whether set-pieces are ruining football as a spectacle is raging, with Liverpool boss Arne Slot revealing he no longer enjoys watching some Premier League matches.Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton, a Premier League title winner with Blackburn, said Arsenal will be the "ugliest" Premier League champions if they go on to clinch the title.Arteta is unrepentant, insisting his only concern about the use of set-pieces is making sure Arsenal are even more efficient with them. "I'm upset that we don't score more, and that we concede as well," he told reporters, on the eve of a trip to Brighton. "We want to be the best and the most dominant team in every aspect of the game, and that's the trajectory and the aim of this team, and as a club, we want to be the same. So we try to do that."Asked if he was surprised at the criticism aimed at his side, Arteta replied: "Part of the job."City manager Pep Guardiola believes teams should focus on adapting to the set-piece strategy rather than complaining about the issue. Arteta, who worked under Guardiola at City before joining Arsenal, agrees with his fellow Spaniard's assessment."Now teams are adapting. Chelsea, look at the quality that they have, the amount of set-pieces they score. Manchester United as well. I was at Man City, I used to work a lot on them," he said.Undeterred by the claims that Arsenal will be "ugly" champions, Arteta said: "I don't know how you celebrate one goal different to another one. Maybe for YouTube it's nicer one or another. I don't know."I would like to play with three players extra in my own half to get some beautiful football. This is not the reality of football. If you want to watch that football, you have to go to a different country because in the Premier League, for the last two seasons or three seasons, this is not the case." 

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique admitted that his side still had considerable room for improvement after they edged past Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday to set up a last-16 showdown against Barcelona or Chelsea. “We had the toughest draw in the league phase, and we are used to playing games like these against anyone,” the Spaniard said after Wednesday’s 2-2 draw in the all-French knockout phase play-off tie that allowed PSG to squeeze through 5-4 on aggregate. PSG led 3-2 from last week’s first leg but Maghnes Akliouche gave Monaco the advantage on the night at the Parc des Princes to level the scores on aggregate. The sending-off of Monaco’s Mamadou Coulibaly early in the second half paved the way for PSG to equalise through Marquinhos and then go 2-1 up in the second leg through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. But with a man fewer, the principality team still scored again through Jordan Teze and Wout Faes missed a glorious chance to force extra time. “Of course we can and want to improve, but there is also always an opponent and we knew how difficult it would be,” said Enrique. “The next one will be easier, no? Chelsea or Barca – not bad. But if any team is ready, it is us.” PSG lead Ligue 1 and remain in the running to retain the Champions League title they won for the first time last season. They have also won the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the French Champions Trophy in this campaign – all on penalties. There is a sense that the Qatar-owned club are a long way short of the form they showed in the second half of last season when they blew away their continental rivals on the way to thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final in Munich. “We knew how difficult it would be and we were not surprised by Monaco,” Enrique added. “We showed our resilience and our ability to overcome problems, but this competition is difficult. It is important to improve and that is what we will try to do.” He will also hope to get last year’s Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele back fully fit – the 28-year-old scored 35 goals last season but has just 11 this season and has started only 14 games out of 38. PSG will find out on Friday their path to this season’s final in Budapest, beyond the identity of their opponents in next month’s last 16. They beat Barcelona 2-1 away during the league phase in October and have faced the Catalans in five knockout ties since 2013. Paris also played Chelsea in knockout ties in three straight seasons from 2014 to 2016 and lost to the Blues 3-0 in last year’s Club World Cup final. Asked how his team can get back to the levels of last year, Enrique said: “Just keep doing the same things. We are ready to play any opponents in any competition. We have had a lot of injuries, but that is not an excuse. There are still more or less three months of the season to go and we have the same mentality. The objective is to win every competition.” Meanwhile, Monaco are left to focus on trying to qualify for Europe again next season after being knocked out in the Champions League play-offs for the second year running. “We could have done more in this campaign but it has still been satisfying,” said Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli, whose side are eighth in Ligue 1. “Let’s hope this experience helps us progress more quickly in the future.” 

Raheem Sterling left Chelsea by mutual consent as the former England forward finally ended his nightmare spell at Stamford Bridge. Sterling had been training away from the rest of his Chelsea team-mates after failing to secure a move in the summer transfer window."Raheem Sterling has today departed Chelsea Football Club by mutual agreement, bringing to an end three-and-a-half seasons as our player," a Chelsea statement said. "We thank Raheem for the contribution he made while a Chelsea player and wish him well for the next stage in his career."The 31-year-old was regarded as one of England's leading wingers when he joined Chelsea from Manchester City in a £47mn ($64mn) deal in 2022. But the four-time Premier League winner's move to west London quickly turned sour as he failed to replicate his City form.Even the departure of Enzo Maresca, who had consigned Sterling to the so-called "bomb squad" of unwanted Chelsea players, was unable to resuscitate the former Liverpool star's career at Stamford Bridge. A season-long loan spell at Arsenal last season was a disappointment, with Sterling struggling to break into Mikel Arteta's side.Sterling had reportedly been kept apart from the rest of the Chelsea players this season, arriving and leaving at a different time to the squad and using a different building. Liam Rosenior, hired as Maresca's successor on January 6, did not pick him in any of his five matches in charge to date.Sterling, who was signed in Thomas Tuchel's reign as Chelsea manager, last played for the club in a competitive game in May 2024, making a total of 81 appearances. He had 18 months remaining on a contract worth a reported £325,000 per week.The man capped 82 times by England, had been linked with Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen and Fulham before the start of this season, but a move never materialised. He is now able to join any club as a free agent even after Monday's transfer deadline.Paqueta signs for Flamengo in record South American dealBrazil's Flamengo have signed West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta, the English club confirmed, in a record transfer in South American football which local media said was worth 42mn euros. The Brazilian Paqueta, 28, was cleared in July of spot-fixing allegations that have hung over him and were seen as costing him a likely move to Manchester City two years ago.West Ham said they had tried their best to convince him to stay, but "reluctantly" agreed to the transfer. "Lucas has made it clear that, for personal and family reasons, he wishes to return home to Brazil and make a fresh start," said the statement. The club confirmed that Paqueta "has been given permission to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Brazilian club Flamengo, after a fee was agreed for his permanent transfer."The record sale brings Paqueta back to Flamengo where he began his career before taking the leap to Europe in 2019. Previously with AC Milan and Lyon, Paqueta played 18 matches for West Ham in the Premier League this season, scoring four goals.Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista told journalists on Sunday he was focused on closing "the biggest transaction ever made by a football club" in South America. Flamengo are one of Brazil's most successful and richest clubs, and last year won the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian title.Brazilian media reported Paqueta had been signed for 42mn euros, before tax. Last year, Flamengo paid 31.6mn euros for winger Samuel Lino from Atletico Madrid, according to their financial statements. Brazilian clubs have a combined revenue approaching $2bn, according to the latest annual report from the investment firm Galapagos Capital, thanks to a massive domestic market of more than 200 million people.This financial power gives Brazil a significant advantage in the region. Paqueta – who was part of the 2022 World Cup team – hopes to represent Brazil again this year at the tournament held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada between June 11 and July 19.The midfielder is emerging from a two-year cloud of suspicion as England's Football Association (FA) investigated whether he was deliberately getting yellow cards after a series of suspicious betting patterns were noted. The player maintained his innocence and after his acquittal, said he could "play football again with a smile on my face." 

Liam Rosenior was confirmed Tuesday as Chelsea’s new head coach on a six-and-a-half-year deal, saying the opportunity to succeed Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge was too good to turn down. The 41-year-old Strasbourg boss told a press conference earlier in the day at the Ligue 1 club that he had “verbally agreed” on the move. Chelsea officially announced that Rosenior, who will take charge of his first match in the FA Cup at the weekend, had signed a deal until 2032. “I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed head coach of Chelsea Football Club,” he said in a statement on the Premier League team’s website. “This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies. My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies.” Rosenior has just three years’ experience as a manager, with Hull City and French club Strasbourg, and has never coached in the Premier League. But he had been widely touted as the frontrunner to succeed Maresca since the Italian left Chelsea last week. Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo multi-club ownership group that also controls Chelsea. Rosenior is Chelsea’s fourth permanent managerial appointment since BlueCo took control of the club previously owned by Roman Abramovich in 2022. The club said the Englishman had shown “he can build teams with a clear way of playing while setting the highest standards with players on and off the pitch”. “While there will continue to be a focus on player development, the club’s expectations and ambitions remain high,” Chelsea added. Rosenior said he had wanted to announce the news himself in Strasbourg because of his deep feelings for the French club. The former defender, whose father, Leroy Rosenior, was also a player and a manager, told reporters the chance to manage Chelsea was “an opportunity I cannot turn down”. “I’m so excited about the future. I cannot lie. My whole life I’ve worked to be a coach,” he said. “To be presented with this opportunity to manage a world-class football club is something I’ve always dreamed of. With that is a mixed emotion of sadness of what I’m leaving behind.” Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane told reporters that he would remain in charge for today’s Premier League match against Fulham. McFarlane said he had spoken briefly to the club’s new boss. “He’s obviously really excited about taking the role,” he said. “It’s a brief conversation, so my understanding is he’s going to be at Cobham (Chelsea’s training ground) later on today.” Rosenior played in the Premier League and the second-tier Championship in England. His clubs included Fulham, Reading and Hull. He had a variety of coaching roles at Derby, which included 12 matches as caretaker manager at the start of the 2022/23 season. Later in 2022 Rosenior took over as manager of Championship team Hull. He was sacked after 18 months and in July 2024 was appointed by Strasbourg, who he guided to seventh place in Ligue 1 last season. McFarlane said Rosenior’s teams played “aggressive, front-foot football” and that his appointment would inspire English managers. Since the formation of the Premier League in 1992, not a single English manager has won the title. 

Liam Rosenior is a little-known English coach who looks certain to be thrust into a fierce spotlight as Chelsea’s new manager. If Rosenior becomes the latest coach on the Chelsea carousel to replace the departed Enzo Maresca, he will have benefited from the Blues’ owners’ multi-club model to earn promotion from Ligue 1’s Strasbourg to the upper echelons of the Premier League. And while he may never have coached in the Premier League, he comes with a glowing reference from former Manchester United and England great Wayne Rooney. After a short spell in charge of Brighton’s under-23s, Rosenior, 41, began his senior coaching career in 2019 at Derby County, first under Philiip Cocu and then as assistant to Rooney. “He’s taken chances, and hopefully that pays off because I think Liam is as good a coach as I’ve ever worked with,” Rooney said on his BBC podcast. “He was incredible in his coaching ability,” added Rooney, highlighting Rosenior’s attention to detail. Rosenior briefly replaced Rooney on an interim basis in 2022 and later that year took over as manager of Hull City in the Championship. After just over 18 months in charge, he was sacked and in July 2024 was appointed by Strasbourg, the French club who are owned by Chelsea’s parent company BlueCo, That link appears to be the main reason the west Londoners are considering Rosenior, given his relative dearth of top-flight experience. Strasbourg are currently seventh in Ligue 1. But according to Rooney, “he’s done his apprenticeship... so he’ll have no doubts in his mind that he’s capable of doing that job.” He would become only the fourth English manager in the current Premier League. In an interview with AFP last year, Rosenior spelled out his coaching philosophy. “For me, regardless of style of play, tactics, systems, how fit your team is, I think football is played by people,” he said. “People have emotions and are complex. They have good days and bad. My job is actually to get the best out of people.”
