Barcelona forecast €700m in sales from fresh VIP seat packages

Barcelona expect to generate about €700 million ($798 million) in committed revenue from 2,000 long-term VIP seat licences at the revamped Camp Nou stadium, the LaLiga club said in a statement on Friday.The VIP seats will be offered under 15- or 30-year licences, with buyers making an upfront payment. Barcelona expect all the seats to be sold over the next two-and-a-half seasons.The projected revenue would be generated over the duration of the contracts, Barcelona said, as the club seeks to turn its redeveloped stadium into a major source of income.In December 2024, Barcelona agreed deals covering 475 VIP seats for up to 30 years, valued at €100 million.Barcelona said they have commercialised nearly 5,000 VIP seats, representing more than €380 million in committed revenue, with contracts for those seats varying in length.Reuters reported on Thursday that Barcelona were exploring two new sources of financing amounting to €510 million to cover rising costs and a shortfall in revenue related to the renovation of their stadium. Work on the stadium is projected to be completed for the 2028-29 season.

Flick supporting 'self-confident' Yamal Ballon d'Or bid

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said Tuesday he will support teenage winger Lamine Yamal's bid to win the Ballon d'Or, noting the player's "self-confidence" on and off the pitch.The 19-year-old forward, who won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barca last season, said Sunday he believes he deserves the individual accolade.Yamal claimed in an interview with Movistar that he and Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe were the two best players in the world and that his teams' success should put him first, when the award is decided on October 26."I think he's honest, has the self-confidence and shows in the beginning of the season how good he is," Flick told reporters.Yamal has scored seven goals in Barca's last four games, helping the Catalan giants maintain a 100 percent start to the season.Flick said although he would have preferred the teenager not to have spoken about it, he accepts it as part of the winger's self-belief."He's exceptional and it's a part of this... I would not prefer this, but he's doing this. He has self-confidence, he wants to win the Ballon d'Or."As a player it's an important thing. He's honest, it's his feeling and we have to accept it. I will support him of course." EVERYONE GOES 'WOW'Flick said Yamal's confidence was also what makes him such a spectacular player to watch.The youngster made his debut for the club at 15 years old and finished as runner-up in last year's Ballon d'Or award behind Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele."He also shows his self-confidence on the pitch and for us this is important," continued Flick."We all want him to play how he plays, and this is a style of confidence. One against one, or two, or three... everyone in the stadium goes 'wow'. This is Lamine and I will support him."It's amazing to have a player like him. When he's of the opinion he deserves it, I think also he deserves it. He won two titles with us, the World Cup with Spanish national team, why not?"There's a lot of world class players on the list, so it's not easy. They will decide and I'll be very happy when it's finished." HARRY KANE ALSO AMONG FAVOURITESBayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane is also among the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or.La Liga leaders Barca welcome promoted side Racing Santander to Camp Nou on Wednesday as they bid to maintain their perfect start to the season.Barcelona's rebuilt stadium will host the Champions League final in 2029, European football governing body UEFA announced earlier Tuesday.Flick, whose contract with the club ends in 2028, said he did not know if he would still be managing Barca by then."I'm 100 percent there... as a coach or as a supporter of Barca," said the coach."We never know what happens. Football is very fast. I enjoy staying in Barcelona, coaching Barca, this is a fantastic team, but in the end you don't know what happens."

Rampant Raphinha bags brace as Barcelona rout Feyenoord

Raphinha continued his superb goalscoring form with a brace as Barcelona demolished Feyenoord 5-1 to begin their Champions League campaign in perfect fashion.Karim Adeyemi curled home brilliantly from long range in between Raphinha's strikes and Lamine Yamal bent in a free-kick as Hansi Flick's team made light work of their Dutch visitors. After Sem Steijn pulled one back, Barca substitute Gabriel Jesus netted a fifth, the forward's first goal since joining from Arsenal this summer.The Catalan giants, who last won the competition in 2015, have triumphed in all five of their matches across all competitions this season – and scored five goals in four of them.Winger Raphinha has been playing up front after Barca sold Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, and has rapidly taken to his new position, plundering eight goals in five games."Playing in front of our fans we always have to show perfect football, or nearly perfect, and with the support of the fans it's a lot easier," Barca captain Raphinha said. "I think we were very good, from the start of the game, controlling the game and with the chances we had we were able to score and it gives us a lot of confidence."The Brazil international said that despite the club's excellent start, there was still a long way to go. "In a season as long as this, there are many ups and downs," added Raphinha. "Starting the season like this obviously gives us a lot of confidence and we have to continue like this. We have to hope the downs are as small as possible."Flick made five changes to the team that thrashed Valencia on Sunday in La Liga, although he maintained star attackers Yamal and Raphinha, as well as new arrival Rodri in his line-up.After days of baking weather in Barcelona, a storm broke ahead of the game, lashing rain down on the Camp Nou pitch and sending supporters scurrying for shelter. By the time it stopped pouring early in the first half, Barcelona were already ahead.Raphinha netted the opener after three minutes. The Brazilian was razor sharp to break into the box and cut inside, sending two defenders sliding the wrong way on the slick turf, before slotting home.Adeyemi, in for Anthony Gordon, doubled Barcelona's lead with a superb strike from outside the area, bent beyond Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst. Anis Hadj Moussa threatened for Feyenoord at the other end but Joan Garcia pushed out his shot at the near post.Barca kept generating openings and defender Joao Cancelo came close to adding a third when he skinned Givairo Read and crashed a shot against the outside of the post. Raphinha netted again before the hour mark for Barca's third, running on to Pedri's perfect through-ball and slotting home.The Dutch side thought they had pulled one back straight away when Nacho Ferri slotted home but it was disallowed after a VAR review for offside in the build-up. Yamal bagged Barca's fourth, direct from a free-kick which crept through the wall, his first such strike for the club.Feyenoord sent on Shaqueel van Persie, the 19-year-old son of former Dutch international Robin van Persie, to try and salvage some pride.Steijn eventually pulled one back for the visitors when he escaped Jules Kounde and Goncalo Borges picked him out with a dangerous low cross to the back post.It was the only blot on Barca's copy book on an otherwise strong start to their league phase, rounded off by Jesus's glancing header from Yamal's cross for the fifth. Demirovic hits hat-trick in Stuttgart's winMeanwhile, Ermedin Demirovic struck a 12-minute first-half ‌hat-trick to give VfB Stuttgart a ‌3-1 victory over ‌Viking Stavanger.In Stuttgart, Demirovic opened ‌the scoring after ‌20 minutes with a touch at the near post, but Viking, making their first appearance in the Champions League group phase, were level two minutes later when Zlatko Tripic finished a swift counter-attack with his left foot.Demirovic quickly re-established the lead in the 26th minute and then completed the hat-trick with a hooked volley six minutes later.

Barcelona star Yamal says will not beg for Ballon d'Or

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal said he will not beg for the Ballon d'Or trophy after winning the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with the Catalan giants.On Monday, Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe made his case to win the trophy, highlighting his World Cup Golden Boot win, which also saw him become the competition's all-time top goalscorer. Yamal, 19, thought he had played very well while winning trophies for club and country but said he was happy to let others decide whether he deserved the prize.The teenager, Mbappe, Harry Kane, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are the main candidates to win the award at the ceremony in London on October 26."I don't think I need to (make a campaign for it), I'm not thinking about what I deserve, everyone can think what they like," Yamal told reporters. "I'm proud of everything I've done this year with my club and with the national team. We've become world champions, we've won the league again. I can't ask for anything more. I think... I've shown an incredible level, it's (the media's) job and I will not beg for anything."Yamal came second in last year's Ballon d'Or voting behind PSG star Dembele. France forward Dembele recently said that Kvaratskhelia, Kane and Mbappe would be in his top three to win the award."He's a friend of Kylian, right?" joked Yamal of the French winger, formerly of Barcelona. "The truth is I don't care, I'm very happy with the year I had, when I played against both of them together I must have annoyed them."Spain knocked out France in the World Cup semi-finals with a convincing 2-0 victory. Yamal suffered a hamstring injury in April and has only just returned to his best level.The winger appeared unhappy at the start of the season but seemed far more cheerful as he netted two goals against Rayo Vallecano and Valencia in his last two outings. "In the end, I'm 19, coming off winning a World Cup, having had the best holidays of my life," said Yamal. "I've never been happier at any point in my life than I am now."The teenager said a key ambition this season was to aim for the "very special" Champions League trophy, with Barcelona beginning their campaign today at home against Dutch side Feyenoord.Barca last won the trophy in 2015, led by the Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar attacking trident. Under coach Hansi Flick they reached the semi-finals in 2025 and then the quarter-finals last season."Every big club is dreaming about this because this is the best competition," said the German. "We have the quality to win this, but there's a long way (to go)."Flick hailed Yamal and said the most important thing was that the Spaniard is enjoying himself on the pitch. "Lamine is a player who can decide games on his own, fantastic quality," added Flick. "It's great, you can see it every day how he is enjoying playing football. For me the best thing is that he enjoys this game and then he's on a top level."Yamal will be the favourite to win a third consecutive best young player award at the Ballon d'Or ceremony. He was one of 10 players nominated, including Johan Manzambi, Yan Diomande and Ayyoub Bouaddi, who all impressed at the World Cup and were then the subject of big-money summer transfers.

Barcelona holding out hope for Alvarez as Atletico resist sale

Barcelona remain hopeful of signing Julian Alvarez before the transfer window closes, club president Joan Laporta said, but Atletico Madrid continue to resist attempts to prise away the Argentina forward.Barca coach Hansi Flick acknowledged that the club could end the summer without signing a new striker if their pursuit of Alvarez ultimately fails.The Catalan giants have made Alvarez their prime target, with Spanish media reporting Laporta's stance is effectively "Alvarez or nobody" as Barca seek to strengthen their attack following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.Atletico, however, have repeatedly stated the 2022 World Cup winner is not for sale. Asked by AFP for comment, an Atletico source said the club had made their position clear already on multiple occasions.Alvarez, 26, missed Atletico training on Wednesday due to illness, days after being jeered by some of his own supporters during Sunday's 2-2 La Liga draw against Villarreal.Barcelona's interest in Alvarez has been public for months, and the player said during the World Cup that he would like to leave.In July, Laporta revealed that Barca had submitted a bid for the striker and said the offer would remain on the table even after Atletico informed them the player was not available.Speaking again, Laporta reiterated that Barcelona have not abandoned hope of reaching an agreement with Atletico."It seems that the player wants to come to Barca, and therefore we continue to hold on to our hope, our intention – always with the utmost respect for Atletico Madrid – of being able to sign the player," Laporta said in a video published by the club.Laporta also said Barcelona had received "information" indicating Atletico had held discussions with other clubs about a possible sale, strengthening the club's belief that a transfer could still happen.Arsenal have been linked with Alvarez in recent days, while Real Madrid made an approach earlier in the summer, although it was not considered a serious attempt to secure the striker's signature."We would like to reach an understanding with Atletico Madrid – we maintain our proposal, our offer to Atletico Madrid," Laporta said. "Hopefully there will be an understanding between the two clubs, between all of us, so that if they sell the player Barca will be the ones that can acquire the services of Julian Alvarez."Flick avoided discussing the player directly when asked about Barcelona's interest but admitted the club's plans must balance short-term ambitions with long-term stability."I don't want to speak about Julian. I only want to (speak) about the situation of the club. We made some really good, good transfers now in this market," Flick told reporters ahead of Thursday's match against Athletic Bilbao."Our goal is clear, but in the end also the club has to think about the future. Not only the present now. Of course as a coach I will say 'OK, give me the best you can have, and more and more and more', maybe it works or maybe not. I have total confidence with the quality we have now."The only recognised centre-forward in Barca's squad is Egyptian teenager Hamza Abdelkarim, who impressed in pre-season but has yet to make his official debut.Barcelona began their La Liga campaign with winger Raphinha leading the line in a 5-0 victory over Elche, and Flick admitted alternative solutions may be needed if Alvarez does not arrive.Midfielders Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo, as well as new arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi could be used in a false nine role. "Of course we have to manage something, we have to maybe find solutions for some situations and some games, but the quality we have now is huge," said Flick."For me the club is doing a great job. Deco is doing a great job. We're looking at the future, not just for this moment but we're looking at the next three, four, five years. I think the club is stabilised and this is what we all want."

Xavi named first foreign Netherlands coach since 1978

Xavi Hernandez has been named as the successor to Ronald Koeman as head coach of the Netherlands national team, becoming their first foreign boss in 48 years, the country's football association announced.The Barcelona great, who won the 2010 World Cup with Spain as a player, has not held a head coaching job since leaving the Camp Nou in 2024.Xavi has signed a four-year deal, which means he will lead the Oranje's Euro 2028 and 2030 World Cup campaigns. "As someone who received his training at the Barcelona academy, with strong influences from Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, among others, I feel a special connection to Dutch football," said the 46-year-old former midfielder."You could say that I am a bit of a son of Dutch football. Other great coaches, especially Louis van Gaal, under whom I made my debut at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard, also played an important role in shaping me as a player and coach."Koeman stepped down after his second spell in charge of the Dutch ended with a last-32 defeat on penalties against Morocco. Ex-Liverpool manager Arne Slot reportedly held initial talks with the Dutch association, but preferred to stay in club football.Xavi's first match at the helm will be a Nations League clash with rivals Germany at the Johann Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam on September 24. He is the Netherlands' first foreign boss since Austrian Ernst Happel, whose side reached the 1978 World Cup final before losing to Argentina."The Netherlands has a rich football culture and a clear vision that also appeals to me enormously – attacking football, based on possession, with creativity, passion, and conviction," Xavi added."Of course, the most important goal is and always will be to win, but I prefer to do so in a way that reflects those characteristics and that people can enjoy. The potential for this is there, as well as a solid foundation to build upon."Xavi, whose first coaching role was with Qatari club Al Sadd, won the 2023 La Liga title with Barca but was sacked at the end of the following season and replaced by Hansi Flick. He won four Champions Leagues with the Catalan giants during an illustrious playing career, and sits second on their all-time list of most appearances, behind only Lionel Messi."As a player alone, Xavi has experienced and won everything, with a World Cup, multiple national titles, and Champions League titles to his name," the Netherlands' football director Nigel de Jong, who famously kicked Xavi's then-teammate Xabi Alonso in the chest during the 2010 World Cup final, said."As a coach, he has been shaped by years of working with top coaches who espouse a football vision that aligns very well with the way we want to play with the Dutch national team -- taking initiative, dominant and attractive football, combined with the flexibility that modern elite football demands."The Netherlands are still attempting to shed their nearly men tag in international football. They have lost three World Cup finals, the most of any nation in history to have never lifted the trophy.A Euro 1988 triumph remains the Netherlands' only major title, losing four Euros semi-finals, including two years ago to England, since. Xavi played a major role as a player in turning Spain from perennial underachievers into a dominant side which romped to three consecutive major international titles, also including Euro 2008 and Euro 2012.Now, he gets a chance to repeat the feat from the touchline.

Ferran Torres said his World Cup-winning goal for Spain on Sunday belonged to "47 million people, not just me or the 26 players".The Barcelona forward scored in the second period of extra-time as Spain finally broke down 10-man Argentina to win 1-0 at the MetLife Stadium."Ultimately, the goal belongs to 47 million people -- not just me or the 26 players," said Torres, referring to Spain's approximate population."It was written in the stars that we would win far away from our people, yet we made them feel as close as possible," added Torres, who was named player of the match despite coming off the bench."It's a huge sense of relief. I faced a lot of criticism during the World Cup, but destiny is written. Thank God, who always gives me the strength to keep going."He admitted it had been tough to win Spain's second World Cup to add to their first triumph in 2010."At the end of the day, all finals are tough. When you're up against (Lionel) Messi, there's a certain nervousness, but we always believed in our football and in ourselves."

Racing against Vingegaard is spectacular, says Pogacar as Tour approaches

Slovenia's Tadej Pogacar is looking forward to continuing his "spectacular" rivalry with Jonas Vingegaard when they meet again as the ‌main contenders in the Tour de France which begins on Saturday in ‌Barcelona."The competition between me and Jonas for the last ‌few years was spectacular," ‌Pogacar told a press conference ‌on Thursday."I think it will continue for a few more years, I hope. We push each other to new heights every year. So we will see how far we go this year."The two men are the finest Grand Tour riders of their generation and without a doubt among the best in the sport's history.Pogacar is chasing a record-equalling fifth Tour title, while Dane Vingegaard is bidding for a third victory following his triumphs in 2022 and 2023.UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider Pogacar, however, ‌does not consider Vingegaard his only opponent."I do not think that he is the only one who can come close. I think there are quite a few guys here who can aim for the victory," he said.France's Paul Seixas, Belgium's Remco Evenepoel and Germany's Florian Lipowitz are three podium contenders for the three-week race.Pogacar, who has won the last two editions, is inevitably the race favourite after his dominant start to the season. MODIFIED BUILD-UP TOWARDS TOURThe world champion has modified his build-up towards the Tour, ‌with only 16 days of ‌racing. His wins this season include a maiden Milan-San Remo title, a third Tour of Flanders, a fourth Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Strade Bianche and, more recently, the Tour de Romandie and the Tour de Suisse."Pretty good," Pogacar replied when asked about his current form. "Only 16 days of racing but the training kilometres are also counting. There has been a lot, so I think we are ready."The four-time Tour de France winner will be supported by a formidable team including Mexico's Isaac del Toro, winner of the recent Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, and Britain's Adam Yates, a third-place finisher in 2023."I think we have had a great team all these years. This year, I think it is about the same as last year," Pogacar said."It will not ‌be an easy race but we have a lot of tactics."

Hamilton claims his first Ferrari win at Barcelona Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory for Ferrari on Sunday at the Barcelona-Catalunya Formula One Grand Prix, ending championship leader Kimi Antonelli's five-race winning streak. The seven-time world champion finished ahead of George Russell and Lando Norris, while Antonelli was forced to abandon in the final stages because of a technical problem. Hamilton, 41, cut down Antonelli's title lead to 41 points by triumphing on a Sunday nearly two years after he last won a race. "It's not over, that's for sure," said Hamilton of the championship race. Mercedes polesitter Russell came in 19 seconds behind Hamilton, with Norris completing an all-British podium, the first since the 1968 United States Grand Prix. "You have helped me so much to achieve this dream, I cannot thank you enough," said Hamilton over team radio. "To the fans, thank you for reminding me who I am. I couldn't have done this without you." Russell, pre-season favourite for the championship, arrived in Barcelona bemoaning bad luck for his recent struggles but after team-mate Antonelli edged in front of him late on he had some good fortune to cut the gap on the teenager to 53 points after the Italian abandoned. "Good to be back on the podium and have a clean race, but Ferrari were mighty today so we need to keep pushing," said Russell. "The last stints were difficult, but it's good to be back here. The pace today was insane from Lewis, they are coming I think." With track temperatures up at 51 degrees Celsius, Hamilton opted for a three pit-stop strategy and it worked to perfection, with the third of those fortuitously coming while the virtual safety car was deployed. Ferrari's heavily upgraded car may well have been fast enough for Hamilton to triumph anyway, as he recorded the 106th victory of his career. Red Bull's Max Verstappen came in fourth, ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Isack Hadjar in the other Red Bull. Russell got off to the perfect start from pole, holding off Hamilton on softs, with the Ferrari driver cutting off Antonelli. Hadjar, who started in position six, was slow off the line and overtaken by eight cars. Charles Leclerc, in the second Ferrari, admitted he was "ashamed" by his crash in qualifying which left him starting in 10th but expertly weaved his way up to sixth, although he was later forced to retire. Early stop Hamilton took an early pit stop on lap 12 to swap his softs for hards, with Mercedes responding on the following lap with hards for Russell. Russell was worried his stop "exposed" him to Antonelli but retook the lead from Hamilton with his teenage team-mate back in third after his own stop to bolt on the hards.With Hamilton 2.3 seconds behind Russell he said "we are on Plan C" over team radio. The seven-time champion pitted for the second time in the 28th lap, indicating a three-stop strategy, with Mercedes deciding not to follow suit because of the threat of 2025 champion Lando Norris, who was on a two-stop plan. Antonelli moved right behind Russell, who was forced to fend off his team-mate. Russell was called in for fresh hards before Antonelli followed suit, allowing Hamilton into the lead, with Ferrari telling the Briton this was the "critical time" for his race. Home favourite Alonso, in what he said was probably his final appearance in Barcelona, was forced to retire because of a suspected battery issue. It brought out a yellow flag with the virtual safety car deployed, offering Hamilton an ideal chance for a cheap stop. That worked brilliantly for Hamilton who emerged from his third stop with fresh rubber 2.6s ahead of Russell with 24 laps remaining. With clean air Hamilton was able to stretch his lead comfortably to triumph in style. The victory was sweetened further by late drama as Antonelli retired from second place in the 62nd lap to blow open the championship.

Barcelona sign Gordon from Newcastle

Barcelona confirmed the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, for a fee that could rise to 80mn euros ($93mn). Gordon will sign for "the next five seasons, until June 30, 2031," Barcelona said in a brief statement.The 25-year-old left winger netted 17 goals for Newcastle this season, 10 of those in the Champions League, and was the club's top scorer. Gordon, part of England's World Cup squad, bolsters a Barcelona attack losing Polish veteran striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of his contract, and possibly Marcus Rashford after his loan spell from Manchester United. La Liga champions Barcelona still hope to strengthen further in the coming weeks, with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez linked with a switch to Catalonia, while the club have not ruled out a new move to keep Rashford. After three years of reduced expenditure and with their partially rebuilt Camp Nou stadium reopened, Barca have more economic breathing room within La Liga's strict financial fair play rules than previously. Lewandowski departure and the end of Rashford's loan give Barca margin to spend and other players including Roony Bardghji, Ansi Fati and Marc-Andre ter Stegen may also leave. Gordon's transfer is Newcastle's second largest sale in their history after Liverpool paid £125mn ($168mn) for Alexander Isak last summer. The Premier League side may move for Real Betis winger Ez Abde as a replacement, according to reports. Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton for £45mn in 2023, with the Merseyside club set to receive 15 percent of profits from the winger's departure from St James's Park.

Global leftists rally in Spain hoping to spark resurgence against far-right

From reforming the UN Security Council to taxing billionaires, thousands of leftists gathered in Barcelona over the weekend to brainstorm ways to halt the rise of authoritarianism ‌and win back voters who have drifted rightwards.The gathering, which drew more than 6,000 people from over 40 countries, comes as far-right and nationalist forces have gained ‌ground globally, eclipsing the left with messaging that pins cost-of-living concerns on immigration, outdated institutions and out-of-touch political elites.Spearheaded ‌by Spain’s Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, whose outspoken opposition to ‌US President Trump’s foreign policy has boosted his image, the summit ‌was buoyed by hopes that the far-right surge may have peaked, with Trump's polling numbers falling, Hungary's Victor Orban ousted after 16 years in government and the French far-right underperforming in last month's municipal elections.Leaders including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazil’s Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva rallied the crowd with calls to reform international organisations and cement new left-leaning alliances, as the shadow of Trump’s attacks on multilateral institutions loomed large."To be progressive is to defend a reformed multilateralism, where the rules work for everyone,” said Lula da Silva, addressing a packed closing plenary of supporters waving red flags, sporting ‘Make Science Great Again’ caps and periodically chanting Spanish anti-fascist anthems.Left-wing parties hoping for a resurgence need to address kitchen table issues such as the cost of living, said Marcus Roberts, CEO of political strategy consultancy Mandate Research.A 30-country Ipsos survey published last month showed voters were far more worried about unemployment, inflation, poverty and inequality than the rise of extremism or moral decline.Indeed, anger at rising fuel prices due to the war in the Middle East has seen Trump’s approval ratings tank, ‌polls show, in what Democrat strategists have described as a window of opportunity to make convincing arguments on the economy ahead of midterm elections in November.Economist Gabriel Zucman took the stage to advocate for higher wealth taxes on millionaires and billionaires, a policy which is hugely popular in polls across Europe and the US but was rejected by lawmakers in his native France."It's hard for people who can't afford eggs to be concerned about democracy," said Neera Tanden, former advisor in Joe Biden, Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama's administrations and director of the Center for American Progress think tank.Isabel Allende, former Senate president of Chile and daughter of Salvador Allende, Latin America’s first Marxist leader who was ousted in 1973 by a US-led military coup, warned that the left had become disconnected from citizens' concerns."It’s unimaginable to fight against the right if we can’t get closer to ordinary people,” she said.Attendees returning from the Spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank said discussions in Barcelona reflected a similar urgency for reforming the balance of power in global institutions, though specifics on what would come ‌next remained unclear."The institutions are still standing but ‌the logic inside them is shifting,” said Mariana Mazzucato, a professor of economics advising governments and policymakers on how states can use public investment to foster growth."Trump is accelerating the crisis of the old order... but if progressives do not offer a credible alternative framework, someone else will fill that vacuum,” she said.Studies like Freedom House’s "Freedom in the World" index show the number of authoritarian governments swelling in the past two decades, as a rise in conflicts, coups, and crackdowns on freedoms has coincided with a pivot away from foreign aid programs by wealthy democracies, whose populaces have grown weary of sending funding abroad while facing cost-of-living challenges at home.While organisers were adamant the event, hosted by several left-wing political networks and Spain’s Socialist Party, was not a mobilisation against Trump, they also said the left could not afford to sit tight and wait for a new US administration, with many echoing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s call for "middle powers" to coalesce."Trump has become a symbol for the extreme right. But this is about social democrats coming together. The fact that US Democrats are so well represented is a first and shows that this movement is growing,” Lars Klingbeil, vice-chancellor of Germany and head of the German Social Democrats, told reporters on the sidelines.The American left and centre-left featured heavily in the closing plenary of the two-day gathering, with former vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz urging crowds not to give up on Democrats and voices from Bernie Sanders to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Hilary Clinton sending video messages in support."The reality is that the tools that the right wing are using to try to destroy our democracy are similar from ‌country to country," US Democratic Senator and Foreign Relations Committee member Chris Murphy said in an interview with Reuters."We need to share experiences to understand how we can fight back,” he said.

Yamal says comeback is not impossible as Barca chase history at Atletico

Lamine Yamal insisted Monday that Barcelona must not treat a Champions League fightback at Atletico Madrid as something that is insurmountable.Barca travel to ‌the Metropolitano today trailing 2-0 from the first leg of their quarter-final, ‌a deficit that leaves them staring at an exit ‌from the competition unless ‌they can conjure something extraordinary away ‌from home."We mustn't think of a comeback as a miracle," Yamal told a press conference."I've been lucky enough that, ever since I was a child, I've had to take on more responsibility than I should have. I'm used to it."I just focus on enjoying it, on not seeing it as a problem, but as a strength. I'm grateful for everything that's happening to me."More than half of the side set to step out in Madrid emerged from La Masia, Barcelona's youth academy, with 18-year-old Yamal widely ‌viewed as the most dazzling product since Lionel Messi.He burst onto the international stage by helping Spain win the 2024 European Championship and finished second in the 2025 Ballon d'Or vote."It's very important to have lots of La Masia players on the pitch for matches like tomorrow's. We're all home-grown, we all love Barca. We know what a moment like this means. We'll give it our all right to the end," he said.History offers slim comfort. Only once in the Champions League has a team overturned ‌a 2-0 first-leg home ‌defeat, when Manchester United beat Paris St Germain 3-1 in Paris in 2019.Barcelona themselves have managed just one greater escape in knockout competition, erasing a 4-0 loss to PSG with a 6-1 victory at Camp Nou in the 2016-17 last 16.The task looks even steeper given recent history. Last month Barca were knocked out of the Copa del Rey semi-finals by Atletico after losing 4-0 in the first leg at the Metropolitano.A 3-0 win in the return proved insufficient, sending Atletico into Saturday's final against Real Sociedad.Yamal, however, is adamant Barcelona will not give up without a fight."We promise that, if we're knocked out, we'll fight right to the end. We'll give our all for this badge. It'll be a match lasting 90 minutes or more; this isn't over ‌yet. A comeback is very much possible, which is why we're here," Yamal said.
