Qatar organizes awareness-raising programs, marking World Cleanup Day 2026

Qatar's Ministry of Municipality has arranged a series of awareness and community programs to mark World Cleanup Day 2026, designed to promote public cleanliness and environmental awareness and sustainability.The activities take place from September 13 to 19 and bring together government and private-sector organizations as well as volunteers and members of the community.As part of the program, the ministry's Public Cleanliness Department held an event attended by over 300 students from different education levels.The event featured interactive workshops, cultural competitions and gifts, focusing on waste sorting and recycling.Meanwhile, Al Dhaayen and Al Rayyan municipalities, in collaboration with the Public Cleanliness Department, have organized beach-cleaning campaigns at Semaisma and Abu Samra beaches. Organizers said the initiatives aimed to raise awareness of the importance of keeping beaches and public facilities clean, promote a culture of community responsibility and encourage people to take part in protecting natural resources.

‘Zero Waste’ campaign expanding to enhance circular economy

The Ministry of Municipality has intensified its efforts to spread public awareness on the “Zero Waste” campaign and enhance public engagement in waste sorting and recycling practices as part of the efforts to reduce waste and promote a culture of circular economy.However, a number of experts and activists in the field noted that the concerned entities should introduce some financial and regulatory incentives to further encourage households, businesses and industries to reduce waste and increase recycling.They suggested that such incentives could include grants for companies achieving high waste-reduction rates, simplified administrative procedures and preferential access to government programmes for businesses meeting zero-waste standards.They further recommended introducing a “Zero Waste Facility” certification to recognise institutions that demonstrate measurable progress in waste reduction, source segregation and recycling.Environmental expert Dr Yousef al-Kazem said that the initiative, launched by the ministry in 2022, helped promote environmental awareness and that it should evolve into a comprehensive institutional and community effort.He proposed expanding environmental competitions beyond schools to include categories such as “Best School”, “Best Home”, “Best Hotel”, “Best Restaurant”, “Best Factory” and “Best Company”.Such recognition, Dr al-Kazem said, could encourage positive competition and make sustainable practices part of everyday life.He stressed that zero waste should not be understood as the complete elimination of waste, but as reducing it to the lowest feasible level while maximising reuse, recycling and resource recovery.Hotels and restaurants could reduce food waste and separate organic refuse, Dr al-Kazem elaborated, while factories and offices could limit the use of paper, plastic and disposable products.Dr Mohamed Saif al-Kuwari highlighted the importance of involving children and young people in building a lasting culture of sustainability.The environmental expert said that waste reduction and environmental protection should become daily habits rather than temporary awareness activities.Hamad Abdullah al-Attiyah, chairman of a wood recycling factory, said that wood recycling could make a significant contribution to the circular economy by diverting timber from landfills and converting it into useful products.He pointed to earlier Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) data indicating that construction waste accounted for around 80% of Qatar’s solid waste, underscoring the potential for recovering materials from the construction sector.Discarded wood, al-Attiyah said, could be processed into sawdust, wood chips, compressed briquettes and other productsRecycling, he added, reduces demand for virgin materials, lowers disposal costs and can create employment across collection, sorting, processing, manufacturing and distribution.Rashid Hamad al-Suwaidi, owner of a paper recycling factory, called for closer co-operation between the private sector, government institutions and the wider community.He said that recycling businesses face challenges including the availability of suitable land and the high cost of electricity, water and gas.Amer Abdelhamid Mustafa, executive director of a wood-recycling factory, provided a practical example of the sector’s capacity.He said that his facility processes approximately 600 tonnes of used wood monthly, producing items including compressed wood blocks, hexagonal charcoal and sawdust for use in farms, restaurants and other markets.The plant’s output, Mustafa added, reaches about 450 tonnes of finished products per month.Meanwhile, Dr Abdullah al-Khater said that recycling could reduce the country's reliance on imported raw materials such as aluminum and iron.Reusing domestic resources, the economic expert argued, could lower costs, strengthen supply security and retain more money within the national economy.Meanwhile, Qatar continues to develop its waste-management and circular-economy infrastructure.In 2023, the Ministry of Municipality reported that around 54% of household, commercial and industrial waste was being recycled or converted into energy or fertiliser.During the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, authorities reported achieving 100% sorting and recycling of waste collected from stadiums and fan zones.

MoPH and healthcare entities launch awareness campaign on blood cancer

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), along with other healthcare entities in the country, has launched a month-long campaign to raise awareness of the various types of blood cancer as August is observed as Blood Cancer Awareness Month.  The ministry has advised the public to watch for the disease’s symptoms while highlighting the treatment options available in the country.  Furthermore, other healthcare entities, such as the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) and Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), have highlighted the importance of raising awareness of the disease.  The HMC noted that the awareness campaign aims to educate the public about risk factors, warning signs, and the importance of prevention, and to encourage people to get tested and adopt a healthy lifestyle to reduce risk.  The MoPH has highlighted through a number of social media posts the importance of early diagnosis and necessary treatment for various types of blood cancer.  The ministry said that blood cancer is a group of cancers that affects how blood cells are produced and function and usually begins in the bone marrow or in the lymphatic system.  The main types of blood cancer are myeloma, leukaemia, and lymphoma, and the MoPH has said that people should take the early warning signs seriously.  Leukaemia is the most prevalent type of blood cancer in the country as per the national records at the ministry.  The most common symptoms of blood cancer are frequent or severe infections, unexplained weight loss and swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin.  Other major symptoms include bone pain or back pain, especially in myeloma, persistent fatigue or weakness and easy bruising or bleeding. The MoPH highlighted that age, genetic factors and family history, previous chemotherapy or radiotherapy, exposure to high radiation, long-term exposure to certain chemicals, weakened immunity, viral infections or autoimmune disease are the major risk factors for blood cancer. Blood tests, bone marrow biopsy, image tests such as CT, PET and MRI, among others, and specialised laboratory tests to identify the exact type and genetic features are some of the ways used to diagnose blood cancer. Three key drivers for better health outcomes in case of blood cancer are: awareness of blood cancer symptoms, timely diagnosis, and access to specialised care.  To reduce the risk of the disease, the MoPH has suggested that the public maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active; follow a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables; avoid smoking and limit exposure to harmful chemicals and unnecessary radiation; and seek medical attention for persistent symptoms.  The ministry underlined that Qatar provides very advanced and specialised treatment for all types of blood cancer cases.Treatment options in the country vary according to the type and stage of the disease.  They include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and stem cell (bone marrow) transplant.A routine blood test may help detect cancers at an early stage when they are more treatable.  People can contact the HMC through Nesma’ak at 16060 and PHCC Hayyak at 107 for more information and assistance.

PHCC launches breastfeeding awareness campaign

Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign to mark this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, observed at the beginning of August under the theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.” The campaign aims to raise community awareness on the importance of breastfeeding for the health of both mothers and children and to promote healthy practices from the earliest stages of a child’s life.As part of its commitment to supporting maternal and child health and reinforcing global initiatives that encourage breastfeeding—most notably the Baby-Friendly Hospital and Health Centre Initiative—the campaign includes a range of educational activities and community outreach programmes both within PHCC health centres and across the wider community.Dr Sadriya al-Kohji, assistant director of medicine, Child and Adolescent Health Services at PHCC, said that the campaign includes publishing awareness messages through social media platforms highlighting the importance of breastfeeding and continuing it beyond birth. It also features a live Instagram session to discuss the benefits of breastfeeding and provide guidance on maintaining breastfeeding after delivery. In addition, PHCC is organising awareness booths at all health centres, where educational brochures in both Arabic and English are distributed. These materials explain the benefits of breastfeeding, outline the essential nutrients found in breast milk, and highlight its role in strengthening children’s immunity and protecting them against a range of common childhood illnesses and infections.Breastfeeding supports children’s health in both the short and long term. Breast milk contains natural antibodies that help protect infants from common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea and various infections. Through its services, PHCC recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life without introducing any additional food or liquids, including water. After six months, breastfeeding should continue alongside the gradual introduction of appropriate complementary foods until the child reaches two years of age. Dr al-Kohji added that the benefits of breastfeeding extend to mothers as well. It helps reduce certain complications during the first weeks after childbirth and lowers the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and type 2 diabetes. It may also help reduce stress and anxiety associated with the postpartum period and contribute to preventing chronic conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and high blood lipid levels. Beyond its health benefits, breastfeeding provides infants with safe, clean, and naturally temperature-appropriate nutrition while also saving families both time and money.Al Waab, Al Mashaf, and Leabaib Health Centres have been designated as Baby-Friendly Health Centres by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF in recognition of their commitment to providing breastfeeding support services.

Growing sustainability awareness is encouraging more consumers in Qatar to repair, alter and reuse clothing instead of replacing it, according to the founder of Stitch by Salma. Speaking to the Gulf Times, Umme Salma said the trend reveals a growing preference for quality, durability and better value, even as fast-fashion retailers continue to expand. She explained that sustainability increasingly complements practical considerations such as affordability and long-term value when consumers decide whether to repair, alter or commission their garments. “Many customers appreciate that repairing or altering a garment reduces waste and extends its lifespan. When commissioning bespoke garments, customers can also choose fabrics, designs and finishes that align with their preferences, resulting in pieces that are worn and valued for much longer,” Salma said. She stressed that mindful spending, quality craftsmanship and durable garments are helping drive a more sustainable approach to fashion consumption. Tailoring and bespoke services, she added, are playing an increasingly important role in reducing textile waste while enabling consumers to get more value from their wardrobes. Salma said fast-fashion brands have not undermined tailoring businesses. “We do not necessarily view fast-fashion brands as direct competitors. In many ways, they create additional demand for tailoring and alterations,” she said. She explained that affordable ready-made clothing often requires resizing, hemming or customisation, particularly in the Gulf, where appearance, comfort and modesty are important considerations. Garments purchased online also frequently require adjustments, allowing tailoring businesses to add value beyond the original purchase. Salma also noted a shift in consumer behaviour, with shoppers becoming more selective and placing greater emphasis on craftsmanship, longevity and value. “While there will always be demand for affordable fashion, many consumers are looking for garments that offer better quality, comfort and longevity. Customers are increasingly aware that investing in a well-made piece can provide better value over time than repeatedly replacing lower-quality items,” she said. According to Salma, this trend is especially evident among professionals, families and customers buying occasion wear, for whom craftsmanship remains a key consideration. Rising living expenses have prompted more consumers to extend the life of their wardrobes by repairing, resizing and updating current garments. “Customers are finding practical ways to refresh existing pieces at a fraction of the cost while maintaining a polished appearance,” Salma said.

The workshop aimed to enable taxpayers to better understand the regulatory frameworks and approved valuation methodologies.
