Iran set up a final showdown with France at the U17 World Volleyball Championship Doha 2026 after beating Argentina 3-0 in the semi-finals on Friday.  In what was an entertaining clash, Iran won 25-19, 29-27, 25-13.  Iran dominated the opening set before the second set produced a fiercely contested battle that extended into extra points, with Iranians eventually edging it.  Iran then maintained their superiority in the third set, winning it by a wide margin to confirm their place in the final.Iran have continued their impressive run in the tournament with an unbeaten record.  They topped Pool E with a perfect nine points from three consecutive victories before defeating Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the Round of 16.  They then secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Pakistan in the quarter-finals in a marathon encounter that went to the deciding set.Argentina's campaign, meanwhile, came to an end in the semi-finals after they produced a strong run in the tournament.  They eliminated Italy, the champions of the inaugural edition, before overcoming Poland 3-0 in the quarter-finals.  France had already secured the first spot in the final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-finals, coming from behind after losing the opening set.  France reached the final after topping Pool A with a perfect record of three wins against Tunisia, Qatar and Venezuela.  They then defeated Spain in the Round of 16 and Romania 3-0 in the quarterfinals.The final of the second edition of the championship will be played on Saturday at 5pm at the Women's Sports Hall in Aspire Zone.  The third-place playoff between Brazil and Argentina will take place at 2pm.  The final day of competition will also be attended by Fabio Azevedo, President of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), who is visiting Qatar as part of the strong relations and ongoing cooperation between the FIVB and the Qatar Volleyball Association.

Midfielder Leandro Paredes and several Argentina team-mates have received bans and fines for their part in clashes with Spain players at the World Cup final, FIFA said on Friday. In the strongest punishment handed down by world football's governing body, Paredes was banned for 10 international games and fined $90,000.He grabbed Eric Garcia by the throat and wrestled Spain's Gavi to the ground while holding his substitute's bib, which led to an escalation in the incidents on the field after the final that Spain won 1-0 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.Paredes' teammate Nahuel Molina received a seven-match ban and must also pay a fine of $90,000, while Thiago Almada was suspended for one match and fined $30,000. Roberto Ayala, a member of Argentina's coaching team, was given a three-match suspension and a fine of $30,000.Gavi was banned for a match and also fined $30,000 for his role in the fracas that erupted after holders Argentina were defeated thanks to Ferran Torres' goal in extra time.Argentina have also been ordered to play their next two home matches with capacity reduced to 50 percent, though one match of that sanction is suspended.Additionally, the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has been fined $321,000 for breaches of FIFA's disciplinary code relating to using a sports event for making demonstrations of a non-sporting nature, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures by its supporters.After Lionel Messi's Argentina beat England 2-1 in a tense World Cup semi-final, several Argentina players held up a banner saying: "The Falklands are Argentine". Argentine forces invaded the British overseas territory in the southwest Atlantic Ocean in 1982, which resulted in then-British prime minister Margaret Thatcher sending a naval task force to reclaim them.The resulting conflict, which lasted for 74 days from April to June 1982, led to the deaths of 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen. Three people from the islands also died. The AFA said it would appeal the suspensions and fines. The AFA said in a statement it would "request from FIFA the grounds for the rulings that are subject to review in order to file appeals before the Appeals Committee".FIFA had appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents after the final whistle. 

Spain head coach Luis De la Fuente has blasted the "unacceptable" behaviour of several Argentina players and their coaching staff after losing the World Cup final.Some Argentina players and staff confronted their Spanish rivals after the final whistle of last Sunday's game in New York which Spain won 1-0 after extra time.Argentina players including Atletico Madrid defender Nahuel Molina and former Paris Saint-Germain player Leandro Paredes were involved in the incidents."At the time, I didn't realise it. I was celebrating, hugging teammates," De La Fuente told Spanish television."But in any case, it is intolerable, unacceptable, it cannot be allowed. Players of that stature, whom I praised in the days leading up to the match and continue to praise, who are great players with a tremendous coach, surely they must have felt just as bad as we did seeing those reactions."De La Fuente praised the exemplary behaviour of his own players faced with these "acts of aggression" and "provocations" which he believes could have escalated into more serious incidents.Although the scenes were filmed and widely shared on social media, they have not yet resulted in any sanctions against the Argentina players.FIFA has opened an investigation into the incidents to determine whether there may have been violations of the world football governing body's disciplinary code. 

Thousands of fans braved the cold and rain Monday to give a rapturous welcome to the Argentine football squad who landed back home without star Lionel Messi, after their World Cup final loss to Spain.It was not the homecoming Argentines had hoped for, four years after millions celebrated their team's tournament victory in 2022, but fresh scenes of joyful chaos filled the street as they danced, sang and set off fireworks to thank the players.The Argentine Football Association (AFA) said earlier that some squad members would not be on the flight, and iconic team captain Messi was not seen descending from the aircraft in images broadcast on local television.Coach Lionel Scaloni and the rest of the team were welcomed with a red carpet outside the aircraft and a military band.They then boarded a bus, waving to frenzied fans along the way.Despite falling short of a second straight championship, "Argentines will celebrate anyway," said housewife Marga Ledezma. The 36-year-old thanked Messi for "all the years he made us happy," urging him not to quit playing for Argentina, but admitting this would be difficult as he was 39.Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in a game that has been criticized in international media for a plethora of fouls and displays of poor sportsmanship from the Albiceleste."I think they criticize us because we know what it's like to suffer, that we get up, we fall down again, and we keep going," said Ledezma.Many fans highlighted that the real victory for Argentina was the 2-1 semi-final win over England, played against the backdrop of a lingering dispute between the countries over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.Some carried flags declaring "The Falklands are Argentine." FIFA is investigating the Argentine team after players held up a banner bearing the phrase after their win against England which sparked a backlash from London.'The pain is immense'"This team united us all, and we should be grateful for that. We will always be there for them, rain or shine. I would say thank you to Messi and that he gave it his all," said Leonardo Barrientos, 36, who works in a textile workshop.Maria Ortiz, 28, came to welcome the team with her two-year-old, and said Spain "deserved the win" but she was "happy for what the team gave us."Messi wrote on Instagram on Monday that "the pain is immense and it's going to take a long time for this wound to heal.""I'll also hold on to all the good memories," he wrote alongside a photo of himself. "Today it's hard to appreciate what we achieved, but this squad reached two consecutive World Cup finals."With the tournament over, President Javier Milei announced that a future date agreed with the team would be set as a public holiday to celebrate their performance in the World Cup. No further details have been announced.While crestfallen after the loss, thousands of Argentines headed to the traditional celebration point at the Obelisk in Buenos Aires where they partied for hours on Sunday evening.Late at night, brief clashes broke out at the monument and police used water cannons, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse revellers. Fifteen people were detained, according to police sources. 

Lionel Messi could have ended all debate over who is the greatest player of all time by winning another World Cup with Argentina on Sunday, but he was left in tears following Spain's 1-0 win.Messi, now 39, dragged the holders to another final, scoring eight goals and also providing two assists in the dramatic late comeback against England in the semi-finals.But the dream of lifting the trophy again, four years after he inspired Argentina to victory in Qatar, ultimately proved too good to be true.Ten-man Argentina did not lay a glove on Spain at the MetLife Stadium, and were lucky to survive until the 106th minute, when Ferran Torres finally broke the deadlock.The blunt South Americans struggled throughout the match and faced a huge challenge when Enzo Fernandez was sent off in stoppage time.The final passed Messi by, and as he broke down in tears it was easy to think that he might have been much better off bowing out on that glorious night in Doha in 2022.That victory allowed him to emulate Diego Maradona, who dragged Argentina to glory in 1986. But this time he emulated his legendary predecessor in a different way.Maradona's Argentina returned to the final as holders in 1990, only to deliver a dreadful, cynical display in losing 1-0 to West Germany, a game they finished with nine men.They fouled their way through this game too, appearing to have no tactic other than to try to get under Spain's skin.Messi touched the ball only 54 times, with almost half of those coming in extra-time, and never looked like scoring the goal that would allow him to equal Kylian Mbappe's overall World Cup record tally of 22.EQUALLING CAFUIt was hard not to come to the conclusion that he ended up hindering his side once they were down to 10 men -- he was left as their lone forward, when in any other circumstances coach Lionel Scaloni would surely have sent on the fresh legs of Lautaro Martinez in attack.Argentina failed to become the first team to retain the World Cup since Brazil in 1962, but this was still a momentous day for Messi.He became only the second player to appear in three World Cup finals, matching the achievement of Brazil great Cafu.Pele won three World Cups, but did not play in the 1962 final due to injury. Maradona played in two finals.If Messi does still have any doubters, they may point to the fact that he has now lost two of his finals, with this defeat following the loss to Germany in 2014.Sunday's final took place back at the same stadium where he sensationally announced his retirement from international football aged 29 in 2016.He had won more than 100 caps by then, and was already regarded as one of the greatest players of all time thanks to his achievements with Barcelona.A GAME TOO FARBut with Argentina he had already lost three major finals, including the 2014 World Cup final, when he came to the MetLife Stadium for the Copa America Centenario decider against Chile in 2016.The game ended 0-0, before Messi missed his penalty in the shootout as Argentina lost again. "For me the national team is over," he said then.He went on to enjoy an incredible late career revival with his country, winning the Copa America back-to-back in 2021 and 2024, either side of the 2022 World Cup.The 2026 tournament in North America felt at first like a victory lap for Messi, as he scored a hat-trick in the opening game against Algeria and the goals kept flowing.He now has more than 200 caps, and has played a record 34 World Cup games across a joint-record six tournaments.Surely this will bring the curtain down on his World Cup career, given he will be into his 40s in 2030.There may, however, be calls for him to keep playing for his country a little longer, especially as he has a contract with Inter Miami until 2028.It has been a glorious career, but Sunday's final was a game too far for Messi and Argentina. 

* Spain are unbeaten in 38 matches across all competitions, a Europe-South America record* De la Fuente became oldest coach to win a World Cup at 65* Argentina played with 10 men after Fernandez's stoppage-time second yellow  Spain coach Luis de la Fuente lavished praise on his players after they beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time on Sunday to win the World Cup for the second time and establish themselves as the dominant team in international football.De la Fuente, who at 65 became the oldest coach to guide a team to a World Cup triumph, led Spain to the Euro 2024 title and his team are now unbeaten in 38 matches in all competitions -- a record for any team from Europe or South America. "I’m so proud of this generation of footballers who have grown up with this philosophy, remained true to it, made it even better, and set an example as a team and a family - they’re excellent, world-class footballers with exceptional talent," he told reporters."I’m very moved. Looking back and thinking about them, we’ve won everything, absolutely everything, with this generation of players."Spain conceded only one goal in the tournament but struggled to find a cutting edge in front of goal for the first 115 minutes against an obdurate Argentina team, who were reduced to 10 men when Enzo Fernandez was dismissed for a second yellow card in stoppage time at the end of 90 minutes."The match should have been decided much earlier ... but this is a World Cup final and you have to dig deep even against ten men, and we’re prepared for anything," De la Fuente added.Matchwinner Ferran Torres said his goal belonged to the whole of Spain and expressed his relief at finally coming through for the team after criticism of his performances in the tournament."It was a goal scored by 47 million people - it wasn’t even mine or from the 26 players’. It was destined to happen; it was meant to be a winner," he said."Whilst all finals are tough, when you’re up against (Argentina's Lionel) Messi, you do get a bit nervous. We played better football. I’ve been heavily criticised throughout the World Cup. Thank God, who always gives me the strength to carry on. God gives things to those who deserve them most." 

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni admitted Spain were the better team following his team's 1-0 extra-time defeat in the 2026 World Cup final on Sunday.Substitute Ferran Torres scored in the second period of extra-time as Spain finally broke down 10-man Argentina to win 1-0 at the MetLife Stadium.The South American champions, featuring star player Lionel Messi, had been seeking to become the first team since 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups."They were the better side -- that's the truth -- but I'll cherish the memory of them (his side), of what they achieved, and of the value of making it this far," Scaloni said."We have to place immense value on this because it takes so much effort."Scaloni said his team must accept defeat with the same grace they showed when celebrating recent successes."We are gracious in victory, and we must be gracious in defeat. Today, we are showing that we know how to lose," he said."We lost the match and we accept it, but that doesn't mean we stop living or forget everything we did to get here."He thanked the fans for their incredible support throughout the 2026 tournament."To the people, my players, and the country, I want to say that we gave it our all," he said."We arrived here facing a realistic situation, but if the players leave everything on the pitch, as they did today, it sets a great example for our people and our country."We have to pick ourselves up again, there is no other way," he added.Scaloni, 48, said the side's achievement in reaching a second successive final should be appreciated."I certainly value the runners-up spot because it takes so much to get here, and I think it deserves huge recognition," he said."Naturally, we would have liked to win, but ultimately, I feel gratitude. That is the only word I have, along with sadness, of course."But when you give everything like that, regardless of whether you play well or poorly, it's very hard to find fault."
