Sadd stunned by Esteghlal as Shamal denied famous win by Ittihad

Al Sadd endured a disappointing start to their AFC Champions League Elite campaign, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Esteghlal of Iran at Basra International Stadium in Iraq on Monday, while Al Shamal were denied a famous victory by a stoppage-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia’s Al Ittihad at Al Bayt Stadium.Jasir Asani capitalised on a defensive error to fire Esteghlal ahead in the ninth minute before Saeid Saharkhizan extended their lead two minutes after the break and Esmaeil Gholizadeh sealed the match five minutes into injury time.In a match largely dominated by the 19-time Qatar Stars League champions, Al Sadd side were let down by poor finishing, with only one shot on target and a goal overturned by VAR.Razvan Lucescu’s men made the stronger start but it was Esteghlal who struck the opening blow in the ninth minute when a wayward pass by Claudinho gifted the ball to Asani, who rounded defender Boualem Khoukhi and lashed the ball beyond Meshaal Barsham.The 2011 champions gradually regained their composure, with Roberto Firmino connecting to Hashim Ali’s cross and looping his header over the bar in the 19th minute. The Brazilian then set up Claudinho 10 minutes later but the striker fired just wide of the right post after weaving past the defence.The ever-threatening Firmino’s shot from the edge of the area in the 35th minute forced keeper Habib Abbasi into a diving save as Al Saad pushed forward in search of the equaliser only to be frustrated at the last.A counterattack by the nine-time IR Iran champions in the 42nd minute had Barsham twisting in mid-air to deny a powerful strike by Amir Mohammad Razzaghinia from the edge of the box before Firmino closed the action in the first half by heading wide of the left post.Saharkhizan gave Esteghlal the perfect start to the second half when he latched on to a through ball from Asani two minutes in, evaded a tackle from Paulo Otavio and drilled the ball through Barsham’s legs into the left corner.Al Saad thought they had reduced the scoreline in the 57th minute when Firmino struck from point-blank range but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for a handball by Yusuf Abdurisag.Gholizadeh put the match beyond Al Saad’s reach five minutes into stoppage time when he picked up Mohammadhossein Eslami’s cross, snuck in between two defenders and booted the ball past Barsham. Wijnaldum breaks Shamal's heartsAl Shamal, meanwhile, looked set to mark their first appearance in the continental championship with a memorable victory after Baghdad Bounedjah put them ahead in the 63rd minute. However, Georginio Wijnaldum struck with virtually the last kick of the match to earn Al Ittihad a point.Al Shamal, who qualified for the AFC Champions League Elite for the first time with a runners-up finish in the QSL last season, had been forced to defend desperately in the dying moments against the 2004 and 2005 champions and Wijnaldum eventually struck.The visitors had made a positive start with Babacar Seck shovelling Dion Lopy’s early strike from outside the area to partial safety, forcing Musaab Khidir to knock the ball out for a corner while the Al Shamal goalkeeper gathered Ahmed Al Ghamdi’s weak shot soon after.It was the home side that went closest to opening the scoring in the 16th minute when Mohamed Ben Romdhane received possession inside the penalty area from Alex Collado, quickly turning to unleash a rising right-foot shot that clipped the top of the crossbar.Al Shamal hit the frame of the goal again with 12 minutes remaining in the half, Baghdad Bounedjah’s crossing from the right towards the near post from where Wesley Said threw himself at a header that thumped against the woodwork.Steve Bergwijn tested Seck from distance two minutes from the end of the half with a low shot that the Al Shamal goalkeeper was fortunate to push to safety after miss-timing his intervention.Al Shamal’s Callado was denied by Predrag Rajkovic eight minutes after the restart when the Spanish midfielder cut back onto his right foot to shoot towards goal but, by the 63rd minute,Georgin the home side had gone ahead.Bounedjah shuttled possession to Ben Romdhane and, after surging into the penalty area, the Al Shamal captain received a return pass that set him up to fire the ball beyond Rajkovic.Wijnaldum and Bergwijn both went close to pulling Al Ittihad level while Ben Romdhane had the ball in the Al Ittihad net again only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.But Wijnaldum calmly stroked in the equaliser from just inside the penalty area in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Bergiwjn’s cutback from the left side to salvage a point for Jens Wissing’s side.

Al Gharafa and Al Shamal will renew their rivalry when they meet at Khalifa International Stadium today, with both sides looking to make an early statement in the Qatar Stars League.The second round comes after an exciting opening week, with Al Gharafa among the teams making a winning start. The Cheetahs defeated Al Shahaniya 2-1, with new signing Franck Magri scoring both goals, and will be aiming to build on that performance and maintain their place among the early leaders.Seven-time champions Al Gharafa go into the game with three points, level with Al Sadd, Al Duhail and Al Rayyan, and coach Pedro Martins will be keen to see his side produce another disciplined performance."The victory gave the players a morale boost and great confidence, and we seek to continue winning," Martins said. "All the players are in good condition and there are no injuries."Martins expects a difficult and open contest against Al Shamal and stressed the need for his players to remain focused and avoid mistakes.Al Shamal, meanwhile, will be chasing their first victory of the season after opening their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Al Arabi. The side coached by Spanishman David Prats finished strongly last season and will also have one eye on their upcoming AFC Champions League campaign. Prats knows his team will have to be at their best against an experienced Al Gharafa side."We are expecting a tough match against a formidable team like Al Gharafa, which will require a hard-fought effort from us to achieve the best possible result," Prats said. "We are aware of Al Gharafa's strength and know that facing them will not be easy. It is almost the same core group of players they have fielded for the past two seasons, and they are also the reigning Amir Cup champions."With both teams possessing quality in midfield and attack, the battle for possession could prove decisive. Al Gharafa will again look to Magri to provide the cutting edge, while Al Shamal will rely on the experience of Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah as they seek to move up from eighth place.The other major fixture today sees Al Wakrah take on Al Rayyan at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Al Wakrah began the season with a 2-2 draw against Qatar SC and will be seeking their first win under Chilean coach Jose Luis Sierra. Al Rayyan, meanwhile, defeated Lusail 1-0 in their opening game and will be looking to make it two wins from two.The match has added intrigue because Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno worked with Al Wakrah last season before taking charge of the Lions. "For me, playing against Al Wakrah is always a special match because Al Wakrah is like family to me," Moreno said. "But we need to win, especially if we want to win titles. We need to win every week."Moreno confirmed that Mitrovic is the only absentee but said he was confident in the players available to him. Sierra believes Al Wakrah have what it takes to challenge Al Rayyan. "Regardless of the opponent, I think my team is in good shape," he said. "With this level of performance, I think we have a real chance of beating Al Rayyan."Al Rayyan currently have three points, while Al Wakrah have one.Defending champions Al Sadd will also be in action tomorrow when they visit Qatar SC at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. Al Sadd opened their title defence with a 3-1 victory over Al Ahli and currently lead the standings on goal difference. Qatar SC, meanwhile, are looking for their first victory after drawing 2-2 with Al Wakrah.The second round will conclude on Saturday, when Al Duhail host Al Arabi at Al Bayt Stadium and Al Shahaniya face Al Sailiya at Lusail Stadium. Al Duhail made a winning start by beating Al Sailiya 2-0, with Edmilson Junior scoring both goals, while Al Arabi will be looking for a response after their 2-2 draw with Al Shamal.Both Al Shahaniya and Al Sailiya will be seeking their first points after suffering defeats in the opening round. FixturesToday: Al Gharafa vs Al Shamal at Khalifa Stadium | 5:15pm; Al Wakrah vs Al Rayyan at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium | 7:30pmTomorrow: Al Ahli vs Lusail at Al Thumama Stadium | 5:15pm; Qatar SC vs Al Sadd at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium | 7:30pmSATURDAY: Al Duhail vs Al Arabi at Al Bayt Stadium | 5:15pm; Al Shahania vs Al Sailiya at Lusail Stadium | 7:30pm

AFC announces draw mechanism for Champions League Elite

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the draw mechanism for the league stage of the AFC Champions League Elite 2026-27, with the draw scheduled for August 18 at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.The new season will feature 32 clubs in an expanded format for the first time since the competition was restructured, with 16 teams from the West region and 16 from the East. The clubs in each region will be divided into four levels, with each team playing eight matches against eight different opponents, including four at home and four away.The top eight teams from each region will advance to the round of 16, which will be held from March 1 to 17. The competition will then move to Saudi Arabia for the combined finals, featuring the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final from April 23 to May 1.In the West region, the first level includes defending champions Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia, Al Ain of the UAE, Qatar's Al Sadd and Iran's Esteghlal.The second level features Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, Uzbekistan's Nasaf Qarshi, Iraq's Al Quwa Al Jawiya and UAE side Shabab Al Ahli.The third level consists of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal, Qatar's Al Gharafa, Iran's Tractor and UAE side Al Wasl.The fourth level includes Saudi Arabia's Al Qadsiah and Al Ittihad, Qatar's Al Shamal and Uzbekistan's Pakhtakor.According to the AFC's draw mechanism, clubs will not be assigned eight opponents individually. Instead, the draw will use a fixed grid comprising four columns - A, B, C and D - in the West region.The four first-level clubs will be drawn into positions A1, B1, C1 and D1, followed by the second-level clubs into A2, B2, C2 and D2, and the same process will be applied to the third and fourth levels.The AFC said the draw will protect clubs from the same national association by ensuring they are not placed in adjacent columns, preventing them from facing each other in the league stage.The principle of sporting fairness will also be applied to limit the repetition of home or away match patterns between clubs from specific national associations.An electronic draw system will apply these restrictions and prevent any conflicts that could interrupt the draw process.

Football giants Al Sadd retain QSL title

Defending champions Al Sadd beat a dogged Al Shamal 3-2 on Monday to retain the Qatar Stars League (QSL) crown. Playing in front of a partisan crowd of 12,324 fans, captain Akram Afif and his powerful side dominated proceedings in both halves to clinch the QSL crown on home soil at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. It is Al Sadd’s 19th QSL title win and third in a row. Even a draw would have sealed the fate in favour of points leaders Al Sadd but they looked for goals from the get-go. **media[439768]** A plucky effort from Afif opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Al Sadd’s first goal was followed by a slick strike from Brazilian Roberto Firmino two minutes later. Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah scored the first goal for Al Shamal in the 65th minute. Brazilian left-back Paulo Otavio added Al Sadd’s third goal two minutes later. Colombian Jeison Murillo Ceron scored off a penalty for Al Shamal in the 85th minute. Al Sadd, who signed Italian coach Roberto Mancini last November, clearly looked like a much stronger side against Al Shamal in the final match of the 2025-26 season. Former AFC Champions League winners, Al Sadd - backed by a vociferous crowd Monday - ended a satisfying season with 45 points from 22 games. Al Shamal, who were seeking their first QSL title, finished the league in second spot with impressive 40 points. Al Rayyan (38 points) finished third followed by Al Gharafa (36) in fourth. **media[439766]** Speaking after the title triumph, Mancini, 61, said Monday: “First of all, I would like to congratulate the players, the technical and administrative staff, and Al Sadd fans on this important title. Winning the league for the third consecutive time is not easy; it is the result of daily hard work and great commitment from everyone within the team. From the beginning of the season, we knew the challenge would be difficult, but the players showed strong character and a winning mentality that helped us overcome every obstacle.” A TENSE START FOR BOTH TEAMS The match got off to a tense start for both sides. Qatar national team player Tarek Salem of Al Sadd made a poor clearance in the third minute, allowing the ball to go for the game’s first corner. As the battle gathered steam, Bounedjah got elbowed by his former Al Sadd teammate Boualem Khoukhi in the third minute. Qatar national team skipper Afif seconds later found Brazilian teammate Firmino with a long ball from the left flank but Al Sadd’s Brazilian import failed to connect from close range. In the eighth minute, keeper Meshal Barsham easily collected a weak header from Algerian star and Al Shamal skipper Bounedjah inside the Al Sadd box after an assist by Waad. Both teams looked a little rough in the first 10 minutes even as Al Sadd skipper Afif gestured to his players to calm down. In the 15th minute, Al Shamal’s Spanish midfielder Alex Collado controlled the ball for about 20 yards, then unfurled a powerful shot from the edge of the Al Sadd box but the ball missed the target. A minute later, Al Sadd’s Otavio drilled a low shot from close range, but Al Shamal keeper Babacar blocked his effort. Shortly afterwards, the script changed for Al Sadd. Al Sadd’s Afif opened the scoring in the 20th minute. After a short dribble past Musaab Khidir, Afif aimed at the goal with a low shot from inside the box but Al Shamal defender Omid Ebrahimi deflected the ball into his own net. With celebrations barely dying down in the stands after the first goal, Al Sadd doubled the lead through Firmino in the 22nd minute. Firmino latched on to a short pass from Claudinho and slipped a low ball to the right of Al Shamal keeper. Shortly after the half-hour mark, Al Shamal’s Mohamed Naceur Manai produced a slick bicycle kick from the edge of the box but Al Sadd keeper Barsham smartly collected the ball. In the 38th minute, Al Sadd could have scored their third goal but Claudinho’s powerful shot from inside the box hit the Al Shamal goalpost and ricocheted away. In injury time, Bounedjah was a fraction of a second late on a close-range shot, but Al Sadd’s Otavio blocked the move. **media[439767]** In the last move of the first half, Bounedjah’s header from very close range - following a set piece situation - went above the Al Sadd crossbar. Four minutes into the second half, disaster struck Al Shamal when Algerian defender Abdessamed Bounacer received a red card from 2026 FIFA World Cup-bound referee Mohammed al-Jassim for a tackle on Afif. In the 56th minute, Firmino rifled in a powerful shot that narrowly missed the Al Shamal crossbar. Seconds later, Brazilian forward Giovani also took a long-range shot that keeper Babacar smartly parried away. At the one-hour mark, Al Shamal’s Omar Mohammed aimed with a left-footed drive from an acute angle inside the box but his shot slipped past the Al Sadd goalpost from close range. Bounedjah, the untiring Algerian, reduced the deficit for Al Shamal with a solo run of about 30 yards into the Al Sadd box. With Agustin Silvera shadowing Bounedjah, the Algerian quickly took aim and slipped the ball past a charging Barsham in the 65th minute. Two minutes later, Otavio delivered a low left-footed drive that went past Al Shamal keeper Babacar much to the delight of coach Manicini and the Al Sadd dugout. Al Shamal scored their second goal when Jeison Murillo converted an 85th-minute penalty. In other results Monday, Al Rayyan cruised to a 4-0 victory over Al Arabi while Al Duhail narrowly edged out Qatar SC with a 2-1 win. Al Wakrah defeated Al Sailiya 3-1 and Al Ahli also won 3-1 on the road against Umm Salal. Meanwhile, the clash between Al Gharafa and Al Shahaniya ended in a 1-1 draw.

Al Sadd inch closer to title as Al Shamal suffer setback

League leaders Al Sadd moved within touching distance of retaining the Qatar Stars League title after securing a vital 3-1 victory over Al Sailiya, while Al Shamal’s hopes of a historic maiden crown suffered a significant blow following their 0-2 defeat to Al Shahania Wednesday.Al Sadd now have five-point advantage over Al Shamal, who will first take on Qatar SC on Monday in their rescheduled fixture before facing Al Sadd in the final round on April 28, a clash that could ultimately decide the destination of the title. Despite having the extra match to play, the defeat to Al Shahania has tilted the momentum in favour of the leaders.Akram Afif starred for Al Sadd with a brace in their win over Al Sailiya at Al Bayt Stadium, scoring in the 10th and 48th minutes, while Roberto Firmino added a third goal in the 70th minute to strengthen The Wolves’ grip at the summit. Al Sailiya, battling to avoid relegation, managed a late consolation through Anwar El Ghazi but remained rooted at the bottom.Earlier, Al Shahania delivered a disciplined performance to upset Al Shamal at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Goals from Francesco Antonucci in the 14th minute and Pelle van Amersfoort in the 76th minute secured three valuable points for Al Shahania, lifting them to 20 points and boosting their survival chances.Al Ahli boosted their survival prospects with a crucial 2-1 win over Al Duhail, courtesy of goals from Michel Vlap and Julian Draxler, while Qatar SC and Al Arabi settled for a 1-1 draw in a closely contested encounter.The fight to avoid relegation remains wide open heading into the final stretch of the season. Al Sailiya stay at the bottom with 19 points but still have two matches remaining, keeping their survival hopes alive. Just above them, Umm Salal and Al Shahania are level on 20 points, while Al Ahli have moved slightly clear on 23 points. With only a few points separating the bottom four teams, the relegation picture is likely to be decided in the final round.Elsewhere, Al Rayyan strengthened their push for a top-three finish with a convincing 3-0 victory over Umm Salal. Roger Guedes struck twice to take his league tally to 20 goals this season, while Rodrigo Moreno also found the net as Al Rayyan stay in third place.Al Wakrah staged a dramatic late comeback to draw 3-3 with Al Gharafa in one of the most entertaining matches of the round. Trailing 3-1 late in the game, Al Wakrah fought back through Luis Alberto and a stoppage-time equaliser from Almahdi Ali to salvage a point.

The Qatar Stars League will resume Thursday following a short suspension since March 1 due to the ongoing regional conflict, with several crucial encounters lined up as the competition enters a decisive phase of the season.The pause had led to the postponement of two Round 17 matches – Qatar SC against Al Shamal and Al Arabi versus Al Sailiya – which have now been rescheduled for April 7. With the league returning to action, attention now shifts to Week 18, where teams will look to regain momentum and strengthen their positions in the standings.Three matches will kick off simultaneously at 9.30pm tonight. Al Sailiya will face Al Duhail at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, Al Wakrah will meet Al Shamal at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, while Qatar SC will take on Al Gharafa at Al Thumama Stadium.The remaining fixtures of the round will be played Friday, with Al Ahli facing Al Arabi at Al Thumama Stadium, Al Rayyan taking on Al Shahania at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium and leaders Al Sadd hosting Umm Salal at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium.Al Sadd sit at the top of the standings with 38 points, maintaining a four-point advantage over closest challengers Al Gharafa, while Al Shamal occupy third place with 31 points as they continue their impressive campaign.Among the most anticipated matches Thursday will be the clash between Al Gharafa and Qatar SC. Gharafa are determined to keep pace with leaders Al Sadd as they continue their pursuit of the title. The Cheetahs know that any slip-up at this stage could allow their rivals to widen the gap at the top.Gharafa coach Pedro Martins confirmed that his players are fully prepared for the challenge despite the unusual circumstances surrounding the recent break in the league schedule. “Facing Qatar SC is important and we must make the necessary effort to achieve victory,” Martins said ahead of the match.He added that the stability in Qatar had helped the team maintain its preparations despite the regional situation. “Despite the circumstances in the region, the stability in Qatar has allowed the players to continue following the training programmes set by the coaching staff,” he explained.Martins also noted that several players have shown improved physical condition after the brief pause in competition. “Over the last few days training has become more regular for the team as a whole. Some players were feeling fatigue after the break, but from what I have seen they are now in better physical condition than they were about 10 or 12 days ago,” he said.Qatar SC currently occupy fifth place with 24 points and remain firmly in the hunt for a top-four finish. A victory against Gharafa would not only boost their position but also strengthen their confidence heading into the final stretch of the competition.Qatar SC assistant coach Miguel Andreu acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge but expressed confidence in his team’s preparations. “Our match against Al Gharafa will be difficult and we have prepared for it in the appropriate manner,” Andreu said. “I have confidence in our players and our ambition is to win in order to continue our winning streak.”He emphasised the importance of each match as the league approaches its final stages. “Every match during this period is of great value to us, so we strive to deliver good performances and achieve the results we are looking for because our goal is to continue moving forward in the standings,” he added.At Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, another intriguing contest awaits as Al Wakrah host Al Shamal. Wakrah are in seventh place with 23 points and are eager to return to winning ways after recent mixed results. The Blue Wave suffered a 1-3 defeat to Al Sadd in Round 16 before playing out a 2-2 draw with Umm Salal.Head coach Vicente Moreno believes his players are ready to resume the league campaign after the brief interruption. “The team has prepared well for the match and the objective is naturally to collect the three points,” Moreno said.He also acknowledged the quality of the opposition and the challenge his side will face. “We know very well that we are playing against a strong team that has strong elements in all lines. Their position in the standings is clear proof of their strength, so overcoming them requires maintaining the highest level of focus throughout the match.”Shamal, meanwhile, have been one of the standout teams this season and currently occupy third place with 31 points from 16 matches. A victory would allow them to maintain pressure on the top two while further consolidating their position among the league’s leading contenders.Coach David Prats expects a demanding encounter. “We are expecting a tough match against a strong team which, in my opinion, is one of the best teams in the league,” Prats said. “They have top-level players with excellent abilities and are guided by a competent coaching staff. We have trained hard over the past period and are ready for the match, which we know will not be easy, like all league matches.”Meanwhile, Al Duhail will be looking to rediscover their form when they take on Al Sailiya. The former champions have endured a difficult spell, failing to win their last four matches and dropping to eighth place in the standings with 21 points. The team will be eager to secure a positive result to revive their campaign and regain momentum in the closing stages of the season.Duhail coach Djamel Belmadi emphasised the importance of the match for his side. “The match against Al Sailiya is crucial for us and we need the three points to climb the standings,” Belmadi said. “We know very well that the match will not be easy given the circumstances our opponents are facing in their fight against relegation, and they are also determined to win.”He added that the team will continue to work hard in training to deliver the performance required. “We will strive to give our best and secure the three points,” he said.Al Sailiya, for their part, enter the match determined to improve their position as they battle to avoid the relegation zone. The side currently sit in 10th place with 15 points from 16 matches, level on points with Al Ahli but ahead on goal difference and just one point above bottom side Al Shahania.Coach Mirghani Al Zain believes his players are ready for the challenge and capable of delivering a strong performance. “The team is entering the match with high morale and complete preparations,” Mirghani said. “Training sessions have gone well, characterised by great discipline and clear commitment from the players. Our main objective in this match is to achieve victory and secure the three points.”He added that he has full confidence in his squad’s ability to compete against one of the league’s strongest teams.FIXTURES Week 18 (kick-off s at 9:30pm)Thursday: Al Sailiya vs Al Duhail at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium; Al Wakrah vs Al Shamal at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium; Qatar SC vs Al Gharafa at Al Thumama StadiumFriday: Al Ahli vs Al Arabi at Al Thumama Stadium; Al Rayyan vs Al Shahania at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium; Al Sadd vs Umm Salal at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium
