Al Sadd's Akram Afif, Al Rayyan’s Mahmoud Abunada and Al Rayyan's Roger Guedes with their trophies at the QFA Awards ceremony held at Raffles Hotel Doha Monday. Afif won the Best Player award for the sixth time. Abunada won the Best Goalkeeper award while Guedes clinched the Mansour Muftah Award for being the top scorer (21 goals) in the 2025-26 season.

  Qatar Stars League champions Al Sadd will take on holders Al Gharafa in the final of the 54th Amir Cup today at Khalifa International Stadium, with Qatar’s most prestigious football title at stake.Having already secured qualification for next season’s AFC Champions League Elite by winning the league title, Al Sadd are aiming to complete a domestic double, while Al Gharafa hope to retain the trophy and secure a direct place in Asia’s premier club competition.Al Sadd are appearing in their 30th Amir Cup final and hold a record 19 titles, 10 more than nearest rivals Al Arabi. However, Al Gharafa have won both previous Amir Cup finals between the two sides - a 4-1 victory in 2002 and a 4-3 penalty shootout win after a goalless draw in 2012.Al Sadd have enjoyed an impressive run to the final. They defeated second division side Al Markhiya 2-1 in the Round of 16, overcame league runners-up Al Shamal 6-4 in the quarter-finals and then cruised past Al Duhail 4-1 in the semi-finals.Al Gharafa, seeking a ninth Amir Cup title, began with a 2-0 victory over Al Kharaitiyat before edging Umm Salal 2-1 in the quarter-finals. They booked their place in the final after beating Al Wakrah 3-2 on penalties following a goalless semi-final draw.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani attended the 2026 Amir Cup final Saturday as Al Gharafa defeated Al Sadd 4-1 at the iconic Khalifa International Stadium.Following the match, His Highness presented Al Gharafa players with the Amir Cup trophy and gold medals, while Al Sadd received the silver medals.The final was also attended by His Highness Personal Representative of HH the Amir Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Thani, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al-Thani, His Excellency Sheikh Jassim bin Khalifa al-Thani, His Excellency Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah al-Ghanim, along with a number of Their Excellencies sheikhs and ministers.Among those present were senior officials from friendly countries, heads of Arab and international sports federations, members of the media and football supporters.In what turned out to be a commanding performance, Al Gharafa completed a 4-1 win in front of 37,823 fans. Captain Yacine Brahimi, the Algerian veteran, scored a hat-trick of goals. He scored in the 27th, 63rd and 90 +1 minutes. The first goal for Al Gharafa was scored by Tunisian Ferjani Sassi.For Al Sadd, the only goal of the match was scored in the 89th minute by Javairô Dilrosun.Saturday's win was Al Gharafa ninth Amir Cup title glory. Al Sadd have won Qatar's most prestigious football title 19 times."It is an amazing feeling. Winning two times in a row is really amazing. This group of players was the main focus. We had a strong mentality for this game. We know nothing less than a win will do for our fans," Brahimi, the Man of the Match, said Saturday. "We came to the stadium to win the Amir Cup final. It was a tough game. I thought we did amazingly. We wanted to give something to our fans because we couldn't win the league (title) but we had to do something great and we did," he added.

Defending champions Al Sadd beat a dogged Al Shamal 3-2 on Monday to retain the Qatar Stars League (QSL) crown. Playing in front of a partisan crowd of 12,324 fans, captain Akram Afif and his powerful side dominated proceedings in both halves to clinch the QSL crown on home soil at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. It is Al Sadd’s 19th QSL title win and third in a row. Even a draw would have sealed the fate in favour of points leaders Al Sadd but they looked for goals from the get-go. **media[439768]** A plucky effort from Afif opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Al Sadd’s first goal was followed by a slick strike from Brazilian Roberto Firmino two minutes later. Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah scored the first goal for Al Shamal in the 65th minute. Brazilian left-back Paulo Otavio added Al Sadd’s third goal two minutes later. Colombian Jeison Murillo Ceron scored off a penalty for Al Shamal in the 85th minute. Al Sadd, who signed Italian coach Roberto Mancini last November, clearly looked like a much stronger side against Al Shamal in the final match of the 2025-26 season. Former AFC Champions League winners, Al Sadd - backed by a vociferous crowd Monday - ended a satisfying season with 45 points from 22 games. Al Shamal, who were seeking their first QSL title, finished the league in second spot with impressive 40 points. Al Rayyan (38 points) finished third followed by Al Gharafa (36) in fourth. **media[439766]** Speaking after the title triumph, Mancini, 61, said Monday: “First of all, I would like to congratulate the players, the technical and administrative staff, and Al Sadd fans on this important title. Winning the league for the third consecutive time is not easy; it is the result of daily hard work and great commitment from everyone within the team. From the beginning of the season, we knew the challenge would be difficult, but the players showed strong character and a winning mentality that helped us overcome every obstacle.” A TENSE START FOR BOTH TEAMS The match got off to a tense start for both sides. Qatar national team player Tarek Salem of Al Sadd made a poor clearance in the third minute, allowing the ball to go for the game’s first corner. As the battle gathered steam, Bounedjah got elbowed by his former Al Sadd teammate Boualem Khoukhi in the third minute. Qatar national team skipper Afif seconds later found Brazilian teammate Firmino with a long ball from the left flank but Al Sadd’s Brazilian import failed to connect from close range. In the eighth minute, keeper Meshal Barsham easily collected a weak header from Algerian star and Al Shamal skipper Bounedjah inside the Al Sadd box after an assist by Waad. Both teams looked a little rough in the first 10 minutes even as Al Sadd skipper Afif gestured to his players to calm down. In the 15th minute, Al Shamal’s Spanish midfielder Alex Collado controlled the ball for about 20 yards, then unfurled a powerful shot from the edge of the Al Sadd box but the ball missed the target. A minute later, Al Sadd’s Otavio drilled a low shot from close range, but Al Shamal keeper Babacar blocked his effort. Shortly afterwards, the script changed for Al Sadd. Al Sadd’s Afif opened the scoring in the 20th minute. After a short dribble past Musaab Khidir, Afif aimed at the goal with a low shot from inside the box but Al Shamal defender Omid Ebrahimi deflected the ball into his own net. With celebrations barely dying down in the stands after the first goal, Al Sadd doubled the lead through Firmino in the 22nd minute. Firmino latched on to a short pass from Claudinho and slipped a low ball to the right of Al Shamal keeper. Shortly after the half-hour mark, Al Shamal’s Mohamed Naceur Manai produced a slick bicycle kick from the edge of the box but Al Sadd keeper Barsham smartly collected the ball. In the 38th minute, Al Sadd could have scored their third goal but Claudinho’s powerful shot from inside the box hit the Al Shamal goalpost and ricocheted away. In injury time, Bounedjah was a fraction of a second late on a close-range shot, but Al Sadd’s Otavio blocked the move. **media[439767]** In the last move of the first half, Bounedjah’s header from very close range - following a set piece situation - went above the Al Sadd crossbar. Four minutes into the second half, disaster struck Al Shamal when Algerian defender Abdessamed Bounacer received a red card from 2026 FIFA World Cup-bound referee Mohammed al-Jassim for a tackle on Afif. In the 56th minute, Firmino rifled in a powerful shot that narrowly missed the Al Shamal crossbar. Seconds later, Brazilian forward Giovani also took a long-range shot that keeper Babacar smartly parried away. At the one-hour mark, Al Shamal’s Omar Mohammed aimed with a left-footed drive from an acute angle inside the box but his shot slipped past the Al Sadd goalpost from close range. Bounedjah, the untiring Algerian, reduced the deficit for Al Shamal with a solo run of about 30 yards into the Al Sadd box. With Agustin Silvera shadowing Bounedjah, the Algerian quickly took aim and slipped the ball past a charging Barsham in the 65th minute. Two minutes later, Otavio delivered a low left-footed drive that went past Al Shamal keeper Babacar much to the delight of coach Manicini and the Al Sadd dugout. Al Shamal scored their second goal when Jeison Murillo converted an 85th-minute penalty. In other results Monday, Al Rayyan cruised to a 4-0 victory over Al Arabi while Al Duhail narrowly edged out Qatar SC with a 2-1 win. Al Wakrah defeated Al Sailiya 3-1 and Al Ahli also won 3-1 on the road against Umm Salal. Meanwhile, the clash between Al Gharafa and Al Shahaniya ended in a 1-1 draw. 

League leaders Al Sadd moved within touching distance of retaining the Qatar Stars League title after securing a vital 3-1 victory over Al Sailiya, while Al Shamal’s hopes of a historic maiden crown suffered a significant blow following their 0-2 defeat to Al Shahania Wednesday.Al Sadd now have five-point advantage over Al Shamal, who will first take on Qatar SC on Monday in their rescheduled fixture before facing Al Sadd in the final round on April 28, a clash that could ultimately decide the destination of the title. Despite having the extra match to play, the defeat to Al Shahania has tilted the momentum in favour of the leaders.Akram Afif starred for Al Sadd with a brace in their win over Al Sailiya at Al Bayt Stadium, scoring in the 10th and 48th minutes, while Roberto Firmino added a third goal in the 70th minute to strengthen The Wolves’ grip at the summit. Al Sailiya, battling to avoid relegation, managed a late consolation through Anwar El Ghazi but remained rooted at the bottom.Earlier, Al Shahania delivered a disciplined performance to upset Al Shamal at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Goals from Francesco Antonucci in the 14th minute and Pelle van Amersfoort in the 76th minute secured three valuable points for Al Shahania, lifting them to 20 points and boosting their survival chances.Al Ahli boosted their survival prospects with a crucial 2-1 win over Al Duhail, courtesy of goals from Michel Vlap and Julian Draxler, while Qatar SC and Al Arabi settled for a 1-1 draw in a closely contested encounter.The fight to avoid relegation remains wide open heading into the final stretch of the season. Al Sailiya stay at the bottom with 19 points but still have two matches remaining, keeping their survival hopes alive. Just above them, Umm Salal and Al Shahania are level on 20 points, while Al Ahli have moved slightly clear on 23 points. With only a few points separating the bottom four teams, the relegation picture is likely to be decided in the final round.Elsewhere, Al Rayyan strengthened their push for a top-three finish with a convincing 3-0 victory over Umm Salal. Roger Guedes struck twice to take his league tally to 20 goals this season, while Rodrigo Moreno also found the net as Al Rayyan stay in third place.Al Wakrah staged a dramatic late comeback to draw 3-3 with Al Gharafa in one of the most entertaining matches of the round. Trailing 3-1 late in the game, Al Wakrah fought back through Luis Alberto and a stoppage-time equaliser from Almahdi Ali to salvage a point. 

Two matches will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, to kick off the Qatar Basketball Cup for men for the 2025-2026 season.The first match will be between Al Sadd and Al Ahli at Al Rayyan Sports Club Hall in the preliminary round.The winner will advance to face Al Arabi in the quarterfinals on April 11.The second match is the first of the quarterfinals, featuring Al Rayyan against Al Khor.Al Rayyan will be looking to bounce back from their league loss to Al Arabi, while Al Khor hope to pull off an upset and continue their journey in the tournament.The quarterfinals will continue on Thursday at Al Gharafa Sports Club Hall, with Al Wakrah facing Qatar SC and Al Gharafa taking on Al Shamal in two evenly matched encounters.
