Al Rayyan returned to the top of the Qatar Stars League with a commanding 6-1 victory over Al Sailiya at Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium on Friday.The Lions moved to 17 points, two clear of defending champions Al Sadd, who had climbed to the summit with a 4-0 win over Al Shahania on Thursday. Rayyan have now regained the lead as the title race intensifies, while Sailiya remain rooted to the bottom with just one point from seven matches.Ahmed Alaaeldin scored twice while Gabriel Pereira, Khaled Ali and Youssef Ayman were also on target for Rayyan, who also benefited from an own goal by Al Sailiya defender Kellian Van der Kaap.Rayyan took the lead in the 20th minute when Brazilian Pereira burst into the penalty area, beat the goalkeeper and a defender, and slotted the ball into the net.They doubled their advantage just two minutes later through Alaaeldin, who headed home after the goalkeeper parried his initial effort.Sailiya's task became even harder in the 30th minute when Ibrahim Majed was sent off with a straight red card for bringing down Pereira as the Brazilian charged forward.Rayyan capitalised on their numerical advantage before the break, with Alaaeldin scoring his second goal in the 43rd minute. The forward finished off an assist from Roger Guedes to give the Lions a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time.The rout continued six minutes after the restart when Van der Kaap turned Pereira's cross into his own net while attempting to clear the danger.Sailiya managed to pull one back through Anwar El Ghazi in the 58th minute, but Rayyan quickly restored their four-goal cushion. Khaled Ali struck in the 67th minute before Youssef Ayman headed home from a corner three minutes later to complete the emphatic victory.The result was a timely response from Vicente Moreno's side after they were held to a goalless draw by Al Gharafa in the previous round, a result that had allowed Sadd to move above them following Thursday's win.In the other match on Friday, Qatar SC came from behind to beat Al Shamal 3-2 at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium. Joao Pedro gave Qatar SC the lead in first-half stoppage time, but Al Shamal fought back after the break through Pau Prim in the 50th minute and Riyad Mahrez, who converted a penalty in the 65th.Tiago Silva equalised for Qatar SC in the 74th minute before Yohan Boli struck in the 80th to complete the comeback and secure the visitors' first win of the season.The victory lifted Qatar SC to six points but they stay in second last spot in the table, while Al Shamal remained in fifth withnine points after suffering their second defeat of the campaign. Duhail face LusailAl Duhail will look to build on their victory over Al Sadd when they face QSL debutants Lusail on Saturday. Coach Djamel Belmadi said the 3-2 win over the defending champions had boosted the players' morale and confidence as they seek to maintain their unbeaten run.Duhail are fourth in the standings with 12 points from three wins and three draws while Lusail are ninth with six points.“The victory over Al Sadd gave the players a great morale boost and strengthened their confidence,” Belmadi said. “It is important that we approach the Lusail match with the necessary focus and seriousness.”Belmadi stressed the need to build on the team's recent performances, maintain their attacking effectiveness and remain focused throughout the match to secure all three points.Lusail coach Emmanuel Mesquita, meanwhile, said his team had prepared well during the week following their draw with Al Shamal in the previous round. “Al Duhail are perhaps the most prepared team in the league at the moment, which makes this a big challenge for us,” Mesquita said. “We will work to deliver a strong performance and achieve a positive result. The support of our fans will also be an important motivation for the players.” Saturday’s fixtures: Al Wakrah vs Al Arabi at Khalifa International Stadium | 5:30pm; Al Duhail vs Lusail at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium | 7:45pm

Al Rayyan seek winning return as Al Sadd fight to revive title defence

Al Rayyan will look to strengthen their grip on top spot when they face Al Sailiya in the seventh round of the Qatar Stars League on Friday, while Al Sadd aim to halt a run of four consecutive defeats across domestic and continental competitions when they take on Al Shahania on Thursday.Rayyan lead the standings with 14 points, two ahead of a chasing trio comprising Sadd, Arabi and Duhail, all on 12 points. Rayyan missed the chance to extend their advantage in the previous round after being held to a goalless draw by Al Gharafa despite creating several scoring opportunities.They will now be keen to return to winning ways against bottom-placed Sailiya, who gained a confidence boost after fighting back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Qatar SC and claim their first point of the season. Sailiya will hope to build on that result, although they face a formidable challenge against the league leaders. **media[507144]**Sadd, meanwhile, will be under pressure to respond when they meet Al Shahania in the opening match of the round at Khalifa International Stadium on Thursday. The defending champions have suffered successive 2-3 defeats against Arabi and Duhail in the league, leaving them second on 12 points, level with Arabi and Duhail but ahead on goal difference.Their recent struggles have been compounded by defeats to Iran's Esteghlal and Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal in the AFC Champions League Elite, increasing the pressure on coach Razvan Lucescu to turn the team's fortunes around.“The match against Al Shahaniya is very important for us. We must focus and give our best in order to return to winning ways,” the Romanian said ahead of the match.Lucescu called on his players to respond strongly, adding: “I expect a strong reaction from the players in order to achieve victory over Al Shahaniya. We must work, fight, and do our utmost to return to winning ways.”Shahania, however, will also be eager to recover after a 6-0 thrashing by Arabi in the previous round. They have seven points and are in eighth place and will need a much-improved defensive display to challenge the defending champions.In Thursday's other match, Al Gharafa host Al Ahli at Thani bin Jassim Stadium, with both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing results. Gharafa were held to a goalless draw by Rayyan in the previous round, leaving them with five points in 10th place. The Amir Cup holders have made a slow start to their league campaign and will be determined to get back to winning ways. Al Ahli, seventh with seven points, suffered a 3-0 defeat against Al Wakrah and will be equally keen to respond.Gharafa assistant coach Antonio Henriquez said preparations had proceeded normally despite the short turnaround between matches, adding that the team was accustomed to the demands of a congested schedule through its regular participation in the AFC Champions League.He stressed the importance of securing all three points and acknowledged the threat posed by an Ahli side with quality in both individual and collective play. Henriquez also noted that Ahli prefer to dominate possession, a tendency reflected in their statistics.Ahli coach Borja Jimenez, meanwhile, said his team needed to improve and restore its balance after the defeat to Wakrah. He acknowledged Gharafa's strength despite their recent results and urged his players to remain focused throughout the match.Jimenez said mistakes had cost Ahli against Wakrah and that the technical staff had worked to address them in training. He stressed that his side could not afford further lapses against a strong opponent, describing their approach for the match as one in which “no mistakes” would be allowed.On Friday, Al Shamal will look to revive their campaign when they face Qatar SC at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium. Last season's runners-up were held to a goalless draw by Lusail after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Duhail, leaving them fifth with nine points.Qatar SC, meanwhile, are still searching for their first victory. They let slip a two-goal lead against Sailiya to draw 2-2 and have collected three points from three draws, leaving them second from bottom.Saturday's meeting between Al Wakrah and Al Arabi at Khalifa International Stadium promises to be one of the round's most intriguing contests, with both teams showing encouraging form.Arabi followed their victory over defending champions Sadd with a commanding 6-0 win against Shahania. The results have lifted them to 12 points and third place, level with Sadd and Duhail but behind the champions on goal difference.Wakrah have also found their rhythm, recording a second consecutive victory with a 3-0 win over Ahli. They have eight points in sixth place and will aim to maintain their momentum against an Arabi side firmly involved in the title race.Duhail will close the round when they host Lusail at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium on Saturday. Back-to-back victories over Shamal, whom they defeated 4-0, and Sadd, whom they beat 3-2, have revived their title a Taawoun rally past Rayyan

Al Rayyan suffered their first defeat in the AFC Champions League Two as they went down 2-1 to Saudi Arabia’s Al Taawoun in their Group B clash in Buraidah on Wednesday.Ahmed al-Ganehi scored for the Qatari side, but Mohammed al-Kuwaykibi and Younes El Bahraoui struck for the hosts to help them climb to the top of the group with four points from two matches.Al Rayyan had opened their campaign with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Jordan’s Al Faisaly, while Al Taawoun began with a 1-1 draw against Oman’s Al Nahda.Al Taawoun looked the livelier of the two sides, with Marin Petkov firing wide from distance in the third minute before al-Kuwaykibi saw his long-range effort blocked.El Bahraoui then blazed over the bar in the 16th minute but the hosts’ pressure eventually paid off three minutes later when Abdulrahman Hindi recycled a corner kick into the path of El Mahdioui who set up al-Kuwaykibi, who drilled his shot past Al Rayyan goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada.Al-Kuwaykibi threatened again in the 29th minute, firing wide from Ibrahim Mahnashi’s pass, but Al Rayyan drew level three minutes later when Wesley teed up al-Ganehi to finish from the centre of the box following a swift counter-attack.Parity lasted just six minutes as al-Kuwaykibi turned provider for El Bahraoui, who restored Al Taawoun’s lead with a long-range strike.Al Taawoun continued to threaten after the break, with El Bahraoui’s close-range header from al-Ghamdi’s cross blocked in the 47th minute before Petkov forced Abunada into a low save eight minutes later.Al Rayyan introduced Aleksandar Mitrovic and Gregore for Wesley and al-Ganehi just before the hour mark, but the hosts remained on the front foot, with the Qatari side coming agonisingly close to an equaliser in the 87th minute.Andre Amaro rose highest to meet Otavios’s delivery of a set-piece situation, only for his headed attempt to smash against the bar as they finished empty-handed.Lucescu rues missed chances after Sadd defeat to HilalMeanwhile, Al Sadd coach Razvan Lucescu rued his side’s failure to capitalise on their chances after they suffered a second consecutive defeat in the AFC Champions League Elite, losing 2-0 to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal SFC at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Tuesday.Despite matching the Saudi giants for much of the contest, Al Sadd were let down by poor finishing and an impressive display by Al Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. The Qatar champions remain at the bottom of the West Zone standings without a point after two matches.“I saw my team working hard and diligently and they went toe-to-toe with the opposition,” said Lucescu. “We created significant, dangerous chances, but unfortunately, we didn't capitalise on those moments as well as we could have. We are also going through a peculiar phase following this long break, especially with some players returning from injury and not yet reaching peak physical fitness. Essentially, we are now resuming the work and effort we put in during the summer preparation period, albeit under different circumstances.”Al Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi, meanwhile, praised his players for securing a second successive victory despite limited preparation time following their Saudi Pro League match against Al Ittihad Club on Saturday.Goals from Ollie Watkins and Ruben Neves sealed the win for the visitors, who relied heavily on video analysis rather than on-field training sessions ahead of the encounter in Doha.“I am happy with the players' performance, we played a great match and controlled most of the proceedings,” said Inzaghi. “I witnessed a fantastic performance from the team. Given the limited time available, our preparations relied more on video analysis of the opponents than on on-field training sessions. This away match was by no means easy, and I thank our wonderful fans for their presence and continued support of the team.”

Rayyan survive late scare to beat Faisaly

Al Rayyan survived a spirited second-half fightback from Al Faisaly to secure a thrilling 4-3 win in their Asian Champions League Two Group C opener at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.The Qatari side looked in control after taking a 3-1 lead at the interval before Mohammad Haddad and Ahmad Ersan struck late to set up a tense finish.The match got off to a cagey start, with neither side able to establish an early rhythm before Al Faisaly’s Ahmad Ersan saw his effort from inside the box sail over the bar from a corner in the fourth minute.Al Rayyan’s free-flowing play almost produced the opener in the sixth minute, with Roger Guedes seeing his effort from outside the box blocked after being teed up by Otavio.The Qatari side, however, did not have to wait long, striking from the resulting corner when David García towered above the Al Faisaly defenders to steer Otavio’s delivery into the bottom left corner.Al Rayyan doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute when Drissa Diakite’s clever flick released Roger Guedes through the middle, with the Brazilian racing into the box before reacting quickest to tuck away the rebound after his initial effort had struck the left post.Guedes continued to torment the Al Faisaly defence, testing Al Abdallah Al Fakhorii with a long-range effort in the 27th minute, but the Al Faisaly goalkeeper could not prevent Al Rayyan from scoring in the 41st minute.Otavio delivered a perfect cross for Ahmed Alaa, who powered a diving header into the bottom corner beyond a rooted Al Fakhori to leave the Jordanian side with a mountain to climb.Al Faisaly, however, reduced the deficit in first half stoppage time when Saidou Simpore converted from close range after being picked out by Ahmad Ersan.Al Rayyan continued to dictate proceedings after the restart and restored their three-goal cushion in the 73rd minute with Hazem Shehata finishing from the centre of the box following Ahmed Al Ganehi’s cutback.The Jordanian side, however, refused to throw in the towel, with Haddad reacting quickest to fire the rebound into the top corner from a tight angle after Ersan’s initial effort crashed against the left post.Al Faisaly then set up a nail-biting finish in the 84th minute, with Ersan curling a superb right-footed free-kick into the top corner to reduce the deficit by one but Al Rayyan held firm to secure all three points.

The match against Al Faisaly marks Al Rayyan’s first appearance in the AFC Champions League Two, with the Qatari club last featuring in the AFC Cup in 2010.

Moreno demands best from Al Rayyan against Al Faisaly

Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno has urged his players to produce their best as they begin their AFC Champions League Two campaign against Jordanian side Al Faisaly at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Wednesday night. “We are eagerly looking forward to playing against Al Faisaly tomorrow in the AFC Champions League Two,” Moreno said at the pre-match press conference. “We know we are facing a good team and that it will be a very difficult match, but we are playing at home and are determined to secure a win in our opening game.” The match marks Al Rayyan’s first appearance in the AFC Champions League Two, with the Qatari club last featuring in the AFC Cup in 2010. Their opponents, two-time AFC Cup winners Al Faisaly, finished runners-up in the Jordanian Pro League last season. Al Rayyan have made a strong start to the Qatar Stars League and sit second after four matches, just two points behind leaders Al Sadd. Moreno believes that form can provide confidence, but stressed that his players must remain focused on the task ahead. “Past results give us great confidence heading into tomorrow’s match. It is very important for us, but our focus right now is solely on tomorrow’s game. Previous matches are over; right now, we know we must think only about tomorrow’s match,” he said. Moreno acknowledged the challenge of facing an opponent from a different league, saying Al Rayyan did not have a complete picture of Al Faisaly’s level. “It is a different competition. We are ready to play in the league, ready for the Qatar Cup, and ready to face Al Faisaly in the Champions League,” he said. “However, it is true that sometimes I do not know the opponent’s exact level because they play in a different league. We are entering tomorrow’s match without knowing their precise level, which is a challenge for us. But I repeat: we are ready, we respect the opponent greatly, and I have immense confidence in my players. I told them that if we want to win tomorrow, we must be at our very best.” Al Rayyan have conceded only two goals in their four league matches, and Moreno was pleased with the team's defensive solidity while calling for greater efficiency in attack. “We have a very good defence, and certainly a very good attack as well, because we are Al Rayyan, and Al Rayyan possesses very talented players,” he said. “However, we always want to improve our performance. Ideally, we would not concede any goals, though that is very difficult to achieve. We want to improve and score more goals. In recent league matches, we created plenty of scoring opportunities, and we need to capitalise on those situations.” Moreno also provided an update on striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who remains sidelined as he continues his recovery. “Mitrovic is currently sidelined. While he did begin training with us last week, he is only performing specific drills. He needs more training time to get up to speed, and I believe he could start playing after the upcoming break,” he said. “We also have a few players dealing with minor issues, and we will decide on their status tomorrow. It is normal to have players managing slight knocks from time to time.” Midfielder Julien De Sart said Al Rayyan were determined to make a strong start to their continental campaign. “We expect a tough match. We know we must give our best in every game to stand a chance of winning,” he said. “As the coach mentioned, we are entering this tournament with great ambition. It is an honour to play in the AFC Champions League Two. We will take it one match at a time and aim to go as far as possible.” De Sart, who has had to contend with injuries and time on the bench, said he was ready to contribute whenever called upon. “That’s football. I believe that throughout your career, you go through periods of injury or time on the bench, and you simply have to adapt to the circumstances,” he said. “I feel I am constantly improving; the more I play, the better I feel. So, if the coach needs me tomorrow, I am ready, and if I’m on the bench, well, that’s just football. Regardless of how long I play, I will try to give my best in training and in matches. As I said, I am ready for however many minutes I play, whether it’s 10 minutes or 90. I will give my all, and the rest will follow.”

Al Sadd will look to maintain their perfect start and stay at the top of the Qatar Stars League when the fourth round gets under way today, with Al Shamal and Al Rayyan hoping to keep the pressure on the defending champions.The six matches will be played over three days, with Al Sadd facing Al Sailiya at Lusail Stadium today, in what appears to be a favourable fixture for the league leaders.The three-time defending champions have won all three of their matches, scoring 13 goals in the process. Their latest success was a 4-1 victory over Al Gharafa, which left them alone at the summit. They have also reached the Qatar Cup final after beating Al Gharafa 2-1 in the semi-final.Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu, however, is taking nothing for granted as Al Sadd begin a busy period of the season. "Every match in the league is difficult, so we must be prepared for it in the best way possible. We need focus and mental discipline, along with the desire to continue working hard, to be ready in all aspects, and to treat the match as if it were a final," Lucescu said yesterday."This is the beginning of a very busy period for us, but we have to adapt to these circumstances and deal with them in the right way, especially since we have a group of players ready to give their all in order to win."Al Sailiya, meanwhile, are still searching for their first points of the campaign after losing their opening three matches. Their latest setback was a 2-0 defeat to Al Arabi, leaving them at the bottom of the table.Coach Mirghani al-Zein acknowledged the size of the challenge but said his team would be determined to produce a response. "Al-Sadd is the strongest team in the league, but Al-Sailiya will enter the match with the aim of giving their best and achieving a positive result," al-Zein said."We know that facing Al Sadd will not be easy, so we must be at the peak of focus and discipline throughout the match, and play to our full potential and maintain organization and cohesion in all lines of the team."Al-Zein added that Al Sailiya's performances had shown clear improvement from one match to the next, although the results had fallen short of expectations.Second-placed Al Shamal, meanwhile, will aim for a third consecutive victory when they host Al Wakrah at Al Bayt Stadium today. Al Shamal have collected seven points from their opening three matches, following wins over Al Gharafa and Al Shahaniya and a draw in their opening game. A victory would keep them firmly in the title race and increase the pressure on Al Sadd.Al Wakrah, on the other hand, are looking to recover from a damaging 4-0 defeat to newly promoted Lusail in the previous round. They have just one point and sit 11th, second from bottom.Chilean coach Jose Luis Sierra said his side must learn from their mistakes and restore their confidence. "I apologise to the fans and the club for the previous match, and I believe that although we have not yet achieved victory, we are performing well technically and in terms of the level of football," Sierra said."Our goal is to bring the team back to its previous level and correct the mistakes. We hope that in the next match we can rectify the situation, change the image, and achieve a positive result."Al Shamal coach David Prats expects a difficult encounter despite Al Wakrah's poor start. "Our match against Al Wakrah will be difficult because, in my opinion, they are one of the best teams in the league, even though they are not at their best during this period," Prats said."We are excited for the match and are looking forward to winning the three points, which is always our goal in every match we play."Al Rayyan, also on seven points and behind Al Shamal on goal difference, will host Al Ahli at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium tomorrow. Al Rayyan were held to a 1-1 draw by Al Duhail in the previous round after winning their opening two matches. They will be keen to return to winning ways, having also reached the Qatar Cup final at the expense of Al Shamal.Al Ahli, meanwhile, picked up their first victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Qatar SC. The result took them to four points and seventh place.Elsewhere tomorrow, Al Gharafa will face Lusail at Khalifa International Stadium in a meeting between two sides heading into the game with contrasting momentum.Al Gharafa have lost their last two matches and slipped to ninth with three points following their 4-1 defeat to Al Sadd. Lusail, by contrast, will be full of confidence after recording their first-ever top-flight victory, a 4-0 demolition of Al Wakrah that lifted them to sixth with four points.Saturday's programme begins with Al Arabi taking on Qatar SC at Al Thumama Stadium. Al Arabi earned their first victory of the campaign with a 2-0 win over Al Sailiya, taking their tally to five points and moving them into fourth place. Qatar SC have endured a difficult start, with two defeats and a draw leaving them with one point in 10th place.The round concludes with Al Duhail hosting Al Shahaniya at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Al Duhail are fifth with five points after their 1-1 draw against Al Rayyan and will be seeking their second victory of the campaign. Al Shahaniya, meanwhile, have three points after losing 2-0 to Al Arabi in the previous round. FixturesToday: Al Shamal vs Al Wakrah at Al Bayt Stadium | 5:00pm; Al Sailiya vs Al Sadd at Lusail Stadium | 7:15pmTomorrow: Al Gharafa vs Lusail at Khalifa International Stadium | 5:00pm; Al Rayyan vs Al Ahli at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium | 7:15pmOn Saturday: Al Arabi vs Qatar SC at Al Thumama Stadium | 5:00pm; Al Duhail vs Al Shahania at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium | 7:15pm

Al Rayyan edge Al Shamal on penalties to set up Qatar Cup final against Al Sadd

Al Rayyan held their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout to defeat a resurgent Al Shamal 5-4 and book their place in the Qatar Cup final, where they will face Al Sadd. The thrilling semi-final at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium yesterday, finished 3-3 after extra time before Al Rayyan prevailed from the spot in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd.The decisive moment in the shootout came when Al Shamal’s Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane sent his penalty over the crossbar. Al Rayyan goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada had earlier produced a crucial save to put his side in control. Al Shamal goalkeeper Babacar Seck also made a save during the shootout, but it was not enough to prevent Al Rayyan from securing their place in the final.The contest had already produced a dramatic finish in regulation time. Al Rayyan appeared to have snatched victory when Julien De Sart scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time, putting his side ahead. However, Al Shamal responded almost immediately, with Baghdad Bounedjah finding the net in the seventh minute of added time. The goal was subsequently ruled out by VAR following a foul in the build-up, sending the match into the penalty shootout.Roger Guedes scored a brace for Al Rayyan (24th minute & 74’ penalty) while Wesley Said (64th minute and 27th minute) and Romdhane (54th minute) had scored for Al Shamal. It was goals galore as both teams played attacking football while severely testing the two goalkeepers. Bounedjah’s strike added more drama and thrill for fans before the goal was struck down and penalties were called for.In the shootout, Alex Collado, Nassim Mubarak, Musaab Khidir and Abdelkarim Fadalla scored for Al Shamal while Fahad Waad and Romdhane missed. For Al Rayyan, Julien Sart, Wesley Said, Hisham Ali, Guedes and Andre Amaro scored while Gregore De Magalhaes missed. Al Sadd fight from being a goal down to beat Al Gharafa At the Khalifa International Stadium, holders Al Sadd sailed into the Qatar Cup 2026 final with a spirited comeback to defeat Al Gharafa 2-1 in the first semi-final. Al Gharafa took the lead in the 14th minute when Frank Magri finished clinically after being picked out by a perfect pass from Yacine Brahimi.The Wolves responded strongly, piling pressure and finding the equalizer in the 26th minute. Hashim Ali unleashed a stunning long-range strike after Al Gharafa had initially cleared a set-piece delivery. Al Sadd completed the turnaround two minutes before half-time as Akram Afif, who has been in superb form this season, produced a sublime assist for Mohamed Manai, who finished with an exquisite backheel flick.Al Gharafa's task became tougher in the 87th minute when Rayyan Al Ali was sent off for pushing goal-bound Hasan Al Haydos. Al Sadd almost added a third goal late on, but Seydou Sano produced a crucial goal-line clearance to maintain Al Gharafa’s deficit. With both sides surviving dramatic semi-finals, the final promises another highly anticipated encounter for the Qatar Cup crown.
