The implementation of a smart irrigation system by Public Works Authority (Ashghal), in partnership with Al Khor and Al Thakhira Municipality, has been widely welcomed by members of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) and environmental experts as a major step towards strengthening water security, reducing irrigation water consumption, and advancing environmental sustainability. The pilot project, introduced at Al Tawasul Park and Al Khor Municipality Park, uses treated wastewater, smart control systems and soil moisture sensors to optimise irrigation. According to Ashghal, the system has reduced irrigation water consumption by 25%, improved irrigation efficiency, lowered operating costs, and supported the sustainable management of natural resources. Experts described the initiative as a successful national model showing how smart technology and circular economy principles can simultaneously advance environmental protection and economic development. They said it aligns with the Third National Development Strategy (2024-2030), particularly its goals of enhancing water security, improving resource efficiency, accelerating digital transformation, promoting the circular economy, strengthening public infrastructure management, and supporting Qatar’s long-term carbon neutrality ambitions. Dr Mohamed Saif al-Kuwari, sustainability consultant, international researcher and expert in sustainability applications, said the project represents “a qualitative step in Qatar’s journey towards sustainable management of natural resources and a practical embodiment of the transition towards smart technologies in managing public facilities and services.” “It presents an integrated model for employing innovation and technology to address one of the most important environmental challenges facing arid countries, namely rationalising water consumption and enhancing water security,” he said. Al-Kuwari explained that the system combines treated wastewater with smart controllers and soil moisture sensors to supply plants with only the amount of water they require. He added that the initiative also supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including sustainable water management, resilient infrastructure, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, and climate action. Mohamed bin Ali al-Athba, chairman of the CMC, described the adoption of smart irrigation technologies as “an important step towards rationalising water consumption, reducing waste, and enhancing water resource management efficiency in line with Qatar’s environmental sustainability goals.” He said the system adjusts irrigation according to plant requirements and weather conditions, reducing unnecessary water use while maintaining high-quality green spaces. Al-Athba also called for wider use of treated wastewater in parks and landscaped areas and the expansion of smart irrigation technologies across green projects nationwide to maximise water efficiency. CMC vice-chairman Mubarak Fareesh al-Salem described the project as “a qualitative leap in Qatar’s sustainable development journey” that reflects the country’s commitment to adopting advanced technologies to conserve natural resources and improve municipal services. Al-Salem added that the system would also reduce operating costs by limiting reliance on water tankers, ease traffic through fewer tanker movements, enhance the urban landscape, and enable precise electronic control of irrigation schedules based on plant requirements and climatic conditions. Dr Mohsen al-Ansi al-Yafei, a professor of environmental sciences at Qatar University (QU), said smart irrigation could save nearly 50% of water currently wasted, based on his practical experience. He noted that studies conducted by QU in collaboration with Ashghal on treated wastewater have produced encouraging results and advocated expanding the system across public parks. Reserving potable water for human consumption while using treated wastewater for irrigation, he said, would deliver significant environmental and resource management benefits. Environmental researcher Ali al-Hanzab welcomed the pilot project, saying it would help conserve groundwater, increase the use of treated wastewater, and reduce water wastage. However, he stressed the need to closely monitor trees and plants during implementation to ensure they adapt successfully to the new irrigation method. “Even if the saving is less than 25%, achieving just 5% would still be valuable because water is an essential environmental resource,” he said, urging authorities to expand the programme if the pilot proves successful.CMC member Saeed al-Marri described smart irrigation as “a practical demonstration that sustainability is an operational approach.” He said wider deployment would strengthen water security, reduce operating costs, and support the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030. Environmental researcher Hamad al-Khelaifi also welcomed the initiative, saying Qatar’s expanding green spaces require The Ministry of Municipality announced the arrival of two Asian elephants at Al Khor Park. The elephants are a gift from the government and people of Nepal, which embodies the depth of bilateral relations and the bonds of friendship and co-operation.The ministry said the male elephant, Khagendra Pradsad, is six years old and weighs 1,190kg, while the female, Rudra Kali, is seven years old and weighs 1,200kg. They were born and bred in the Elephant Breeding and Training Centre, Sauraha, Chitwan National Park, Nepal.The couple were seen off from Chitwan National Park on December 17, according to a The Himalayan Times report. The paper cited Dr Haribhadra Acharya, Information officer at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, who said the calves would be transported to Qatar via a chartered cargo plane from Bhairahawa International Airport. The preparations were underway to move the calves from Sauraha to Bhairahawa a day earlier to meet the flight schedule and road conditions.**media[396061]**According to Acharya, two mahouts are accompanying the elephants under the supervision of park animal technician Dinesh Dhakal, who will return to Nepal after ensuring the proper management of the elephants. Nepal has previously gifted elephants to friendly nations as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and highlight the country's biodiversity internationally.The Elephant Breeding and Training Centre initially received 16 elephants from India, two from Myanmar, and two from Thailand. To date, the centre has bred and raised 68 elephants, six of which have died, while 61 have undergone formal training.The decision to gift elephants to Qatar was first announced during the official visit of then Nepal president Bidya Devi Bhandari in 2018. The ministry explained, via X, that the public can visit the Asian elephants at the Al Khor Park by booking through the Aoun app or the ministry's website.

The American School of Doha (ASD) hosted its fourth annual Sing Out Primary Choral Festival recently, bringing together young singers from schools across Qatar for a day of music, unity, and celebration.This year’s festival highlighted the power of collective singing as one voice and the joy that comes from making music together, a statement saidThe festival showcased mass choir performances conducted and led by Brita Fray, featuring over 300 students from Doha English Speaking School, Al Khor International School, Park House English School, Dukhan English School, Qatar International School, GEMS Wellington School, and the American School of Doha.Supporting them were ASD Lower and Upper Elementary music teachers Sanae Yamaura, Jennie Andreasen, and Lisa Cheung. Guided by their dedicated music educators, students filled the theatre with uplifting choral repertoire that reflected collaboration, harmony, unity, and shared purpose.The event also featured an ensemble of guest musicians whose artistry elevated the performances and added vibrant energy to the festival.The event was supported by ASD's administration comprising director Dr Victor Guthrie; Upper Elementary School principal Brian Donaldson; Upper Elementary associate principal Selina Peay-Collins; Lower Elementary principal Craig Campbell; Lower Elementary associate principal Abigail Kasky; and associate director of athletics and activities Trent Howell. 

Robert Firmino registered a hat-trick as Al Sadd humbled Umm Salal 8-3 in the Qatar Stars League at the Al Khor Stadium. The big margin win was Al Sadd’s fourth of the league and took their tally to 14 points to prop them two places up into 5th while Umm Salal remain 11th with six points after a seventh loss.Al Sailiya rally to hold Duhail 2-2Al Duhail threw away a two-goal lead and were held to a 2-2 draw by Al Sailiya at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium. The Red Knights were in cruise control in the first half with two superb goals, a stunning opener from Krzysztof Piątek in the 38th minute and another great goal by Edmilson Junior in the 43rd minute, before Al Sailiya turned the situation around in the second half through Khaled Ali who secured the equalizer within three minutes (58th minute) and (61st minute).Al Duhail, who advanced to 12 points to be 7th in standings, were guilty of several missed opportunities, while Al Sailiya, who have been suffering from inconsistent performances, count themselves lucky to have escaped with a point that moved them to 7 points and 10th place in the standings.
