Oil prices extended gains and Asian stocks mostly fell on Tuesday as a US-Iran deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remained distant, a day after the deadline for a truce expired.In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 closed down 2.5% to 67,460.73 points; Hong Kong - Hang Seng Index ended up 0.1% to 25,471.15 points; and Shanghai - Composite closed up 0.2% to 3,990.30 points yesterday.While soft US data this month has eased concerns that the Federal Reserve will hike interest rates soon, traders still expect inflation to remain high for some time as the Middle East crisis drags on and crude stays stuck around $90 a barrel.That has pushed up long-term Treasury yields to levels not seen since June 2007 -- just before the global financial crisis exploded -- compounded by rising US borrowing and massive corporate bond issuance to fund AI investments.The chances of an agreement between Washington and Tehran remain thin after Donald Trump said he would not extend a 60-day truce -- part of a June memorandum of understanding -- and Iran called it "irrelevant" because the United States had violated it early on.The US president's envoy and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, said the two sides were having "very positive and active conversations" but noted that "there's really not a lot of trust between America and Iran after all these years"."President Trump is going to be very patient... he doesn't want to rush to a deal," Kushner told Fox News."He'll make the right deal when the right deal is ready," he said.Trump said earlier Iranian officials "want to make a deal, but they're not going to make the kind of a deal that I feel is necessary".He also threatened to bomb Oman if it "gets in the way" of an agreement, referring to ongoing talks between Muscat and Tehran on control of the Strait of Hormuz.Washington appears happy to play a long game, which investors fear could mean prices will stay higher for some time.Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent threatened last week to hit Tehran with economic isolation "like the world has never seen before", adding that new measures were expected next week.That came after Trump had said "we are low-keying it", adding that "we are just watching Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have no money".Both main crude contracts rose on Tuesday, following gains of more than two percent the previous day, with Brent sitting above $91.Equities mostly fell following Wall Street's losses.Tokyo was off more than two percent, while Seoul and Taipei were down more than one percent. Sydney, Singapore and Mumbai were also lower.However, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Manila, Wellington and Jakarta rose.London edged higher but Paris and Frankfurt retreated."For weeks, investors had been willing to treat the Iran war, oil volatility and the pressure building in the long end of the Treasury curve as separate irritants," said Stephen Innes, global strategist at Quintex Intel."Diplomacy was supposed to contain the geopolitical risk, oil was supposed to remain manageable, and strong earnings were supposed to keep the equity engine turning."That calculus becomes less comfortable once those risks begin to converge." 

 A delegation from the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) participated in a ceremony held to announce that the search and rescue team of the General Directorate of Civil Protection at Egypt’s ministry of interior had obtained international classification at the “Medium” level from the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), affiliated with the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).  The delegation was headed by Lekhwiya assistant commander (Administration and Supply) Staff Brigadier Mubarak Sherida al-Kaabi.  This achievement reflects the outcomes of joint co-operation in the field of search and rescue, with the Qatari International Search and Rescue Group contributing to the training and qualification of the Egyptian team in accordance with approved international standards.  Accordingly, the Qatari International Search and Rescue Group became the first Arab international team to train and qualify another Arab team to achieve international classification.  The ceremony was attended by Egypt’s Assistant Minister of Interior Major-General Amr Mustafa El-Baily, along with security leaders from both sides and INSARAG representatives.  On the sidelines of the announcement ceremony, al-Kaabi held a meeting with El-Baily.  During the meeting, they reviewed aspects of co-operation in the fields of security training and search and rescue, and discussed ways to further enhance and develop this co-operation.  El-Baily commended the prominent role of the Qatari International Search and Rescue Group, as an internationally accredited mentor, in training and qualifying the Egyptian team to obtain international certification.  He also emphasised the importance of continued co-ordination and co-operation in strengthening the joint Arab search and rescue system. –

 Qatar National Library (QNL) participated in the 90th IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) held in Busan, South Korea.QNL was represented by a high-level delegation of experts and specialists led by Ms. Tan Huism, Executive Director of Qatar National Library and Chair of the IFLA National Libraries Section.In a statement issued today, the Library stated that, as part of this participation, it organized the "Arabic Caucus" under the theme "Voices from the Region: Shared Priorities and Prospects for Future Cooperation," in its capacity as the IFLA Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa.The opening session of the caucus featured an address by the Qatar National Library delegation, followed by a speech from the Regional Committee for the Middle East and North Africa, a brief presentation of survey results regarding the current state of libraries in the region, and an open discussion on prospects for future collaboration.The caucus also witnessed the announcement of a list comprising 52 members from the Arab region appointed to various positions and committees within the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) for the 2025-2027 term. This reflects a remarkable professional presence for Arabs and a geographic and specialized diversity that enhances the region's role in shaping the global future of the library and information profession.During the Arab Librarians Forum in Busan, the two winners of the QIMAM 2026 Award -granted by Qatar National Library- were honored. The award was won by Ruaya Al Kharusi from the Sultanate of Oman and Ms. Nour El Ayoubi from Lebanon, in recognition of their outstanding leadership capabilities and unwavering commitment to advancing library and information services. This step reaffirms Qatar National Library's dedication to supporting young talent and investing in the future of the library and information profession in the Arab region.The award is granted to emerging library specialists aged 20 to 30 with no less than four years of experience, in recognition of their leadership capabilities and tangible impact in serving the community. A high-level judging panel of regional experts was formed to evaluate candidates based on criteria of professional achievement and commitment to library development.Regarding the regional impact of this initiative, Acting Manager of National Collections at QNL and Manager of the IFLA MENA Regional Office, Dr. Eiman Al Shammari stated: "At the Regional Office, our goal is to create a vibrant and interconnected network of professionals capable of driving positive change. By exposing exceptional talents in the library field to international best practices and providing them with the opportunity to connect with a broad network of peers in the field, we are preparing them so they can return to their countries and elevate the standard of library services and information provision across the region."The two winners - Ruaya Al Kharusi, Senior Information Specialist at the Music Library of the Royal Opera House in Oman, and Nour El Ayoubi, Specialist at the Medical and Health Sciences Library at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon- expressed their profound happiness upon receiving the award and being given the opportunity to attend the IFLA Congress, interact with professionals from around the world, and gain valuable insights from international experiences. 

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE) announced that 3,793 places are available for Qatari students at 17 private schools under its social responsibility initiative, with parents paying no additional tuition fees beyond the value of the education voucher.During a presentation on the initiative, the ministry said the education voucher is valued at QR 28,000 annually, in line with the approved regulations.Dr. Rania Yousry Mohamed, Director of the Private Schools and Kindergartens Department and Acting Director of the Private Schools Licensing Department, said the ministry covers the value of the education voucher, while schools cover any tuition fees exceeding the voucher amount, based on their approved fee schedules. As a result, parents will not have to pay any additional tuition fees for their children.She added that the ministry has reopened applications for all Qatari students wishing to benefit from the initiative, with parents able to apply directly for a place through the Private Schools Licensing Department to facilitate the process.The ministry has also removed the previous QR 35,000 monthly income limit, which had been an eligibility requirement. All Qatari parents can now apply for a place regardless of their income, while applications previously rejected solely because of income have been reviewed and the applicants have been offered places.She explained that the list includes 17 private educational institutions across the country offering Qatari students places fully covered by the education voucher, with no additional fees charged to parents, across a range of curricula and grade levels.The participating schools include Al Andalus Private Schools for Boys (Evening) and Al Andalus Private Schools for Girls (Evening), Al Arqam Academy for Girls, The Cambridge School Doha, Cambridge International School, American Academy School - Al Thumama Branch, Etqan Global Academy, Alpha Cambridge School, Awfaz Global School and its Al Gharafa branch, Beta Cambridge School, Al Koon International Private Academy and its Evening and Muaither branches, Afaq Private Primary School, and Loydence Academy - Al Aziziyah Branch.The Ministry of Education and Higher Education said the initiative is part of efforts to support Qatari families and provide diverse and competitive educational options, ensuring access to high-quality education across various approved curricula and in different parts of the country. 

The State of Qatar participated Thursday in the 18th Arab Conference for Heads of Borders, Airports and Port Security, held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers in the Republic of Tunisia.The Ministry of Interior delegation was headed by Director of the Maritime Ports Security Department Major General Dr. Abdulhadi Mohammed Zaben Al Dosari.The conference discussed a number of items on its agenda and addressed the efforts of Qatar's ports in securing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. 

Registering a home business in Qatar now costs QR300 — down from QR1,500 — and the list of activities a family can legally run from its own address has grown from 15 to 63, taking in everything from date roasting and jewellery design to computer programming and website design.The Ministry of Commerce and Industry's permanent fee cut and expanded registry mark how far the productive families sector has travelled. What began as a social empowerment initiative aimed at topping up household incomes has become a working contributor to economic diversification, local production, women's entrepreneurship and small business development — a shift more than three decades in the making.Ministry of Social Development and Family (MSDF) figures show its flagship Min Al-Watan (Home-Grown) initiative supported more than 708 productive families during 2025 — roughly 620 women and 78 men — and helped launch 75 new production projects, many of them run by beneficiaries of social support programmes. Over the years, more than 1,000 families have received official backing through empowerment, marketing and training schemes; direct beneficiaries currently exceed 680.This year has been a busy one for the sector. On May 13, the MSDF Family Empowerment Department opened the Old Market Bazaar at Tawar Mall, featuring 10 selected family-run projects and running to the end of June, with handmade crafts, perfumes, clothing and traditional food sold direct to the public. The ministry followed with the Made at Home exhibition at Katara Cultural Village from May 28-30, where selected projects across organic personal care, food production and fine art tested consumer response and looked at scaling up. Crucially, all revenue generated at these markets goes straight back to the families, with no fees or deductions — a direct route to liquidity and self-sufficiency.In July, MSDF opened a fresh registration wave on the Min Al-Watan portal for Qatari citizens with home-based businesses or distinctive handicrafts, under quality criteria that include health certificates for food projects and proof of local production. On July 8, it opened nominations for Qatar's Best Small Business Award, part of the 13th GCC Recognition Ceremony for Small Business Owners, pushing home projects towards regional standards.Women account for the majority of home-based business owners, working across food production and confectionery, fashion design, handicrafts, perfumes, cosmetics, event planning and home décor. The model offers income, a brand and an economic footprint without surrendering the flexibility of working from home — and successful ventures frequently graduate into registered commercial enterprises that go on to hire.The wider small business environment has become more accommodating in step. Qatar Development Bank reported supporting more than 2,000 companies during 2025, with around QR2bn in financing and investments exceeding QR350mn. It also facilitated more than 445 localisation deals worth over QR2bn, tying smaller producers into larger economic sectors.Digital commerce has done the rest. Social media and online storefronts let productive families reach customers across the country without the overheads of a retail unit, building loyal followings on personalised service and locally rooted products.Experts note that home-based enterprise remains one of the most accessible entry points into the economy — low capital, high flexibility, and room for innovation and family empowerment. Food is still the strongest performer, with steady demand for homemade meals, traditional sweets, specialty desserts, catering and customised orders. Fashion and tailoring follow, alongside handicrafts and gifts.

The Cultural Council of the Majlis of Seniors, affiliated with the Ehsan Centre for Empowerment and Elderly Care, is hosting a lecture today ( Sunday) by veteran Qatari researcher and cultural journalist, Saleh Gharib al-Obaidli titled ‘Place Memory in Folk Songs’. The lecture forms part of the council’s cultural programme, which seeks to enrich the intellectual and cultural engagement of older people while creating a space for dialogue around Qatar’s folk heritage and collective memory. Al-Obaidli will examine the close relationship between traditional songs and the places from which they emerged, highlighting how folk music represents far more than entertainment or artistic expression. In many cases, these songs serve as an oral archive, preserving details of everyday life and documenting the social and geographical environments in which communities lived. Drawing on his extensive research into Qatari heritage, al-Obaidli is expected to present examples of folk songs associated with specific places, exploring references to cities, neighbourhoods, the sea, markets, traditional occupations and social customs. He will examine how lyrics and melodies helped preserve images and names of places in the popular memory and transmit them from one generation to another. The lecture will also explore how some of these places have changed over time, while their original images have remained alive in the collective consciousness through songs and oral traditions. This gives folk music a significance that extends beyond its artistic value to encompass important historical, social and cultural dimensions. Al-Obaidli is one of Qatar’s prominent figures in cultural journalism and heritage research, with a career spanning several decades. His professional journey began with the Qatari Theatre Troupe in Al Najma, where he was involved in theatrical activities during the summer season. He later worked for several newspapers before joining ‘Al Raya’ at its establishment in 1979, following the publication of a widely discussed cultural article on theatre. At ‘Al Raya’, al-Obaidli became a prominent cultural journalist and headed the culture and arts page, before expanding his work into social investigations and field reporting across Qatar. In 2003, he joined ‘Al Sharq’, initially as an arts editor, later becoming head of both the cultural and local affairs sections, a position he held until 2020. His major contribution, however, has been in documenting Qatar’s intangible heritage. As a heritage researcher, he has written extensively on traditional architecture, pottery, folk tales, crafts and traditional industries. Among his notable publications is ‘Henna: The Adornment of Gulf Women’, published in 1989, alongside numerous studies and articles on social customs, theatre and popular heritage. Al-Obaidli has also worked since 1982 with the Popular Heritage Centre of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), further cementing his contribution to documenting and preserving the region’s cultural heritage. The lecture reflects the council’s broader commitment to drawing on the expertise of researchers and heritage specialists while providing older generations with opportunities to share knowledge, memories and experiences.

England cricket chief Rob Key has left the door open for a dramatic international comeback by former Test captain Ben Stokes, who announced his shock retirement in late June.Key, the managing director of men's cricket for the England and Wales Cricket Board, was speaking a day after the ECB confirmed Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of the Test team.The appointment of the former New Zealand skipper, alongside a return to the Test captaincy for Joe Root, comes after a turbulent few weeks for England.First, Stokes announced he was quitting international cricket during play in the third Test against New Zealand -- the visitors won the match to clinch the series 2-1.The Durham all-rounder, 35, had been dropped for the second Test after breaking a team curfew at a London nightclub, the latest in a series of off-field incidents involving England players.Two weeks later coach Brendon McCullum was axed as the red-ball coach, bringing the curtain down on the "Bazball" era of ultra-attacking Test cricket he had led alongside Stokes.McCullum, another former New Zealand captain, remains in charge of England's white-ball teams. HEADLINE-GRABBING RETURN FOR STOKESSpeaking at Lord's on Friday, Key said he would not rule out a headline-grabbing return for Stokes, with a home Ashes series against Australia looming in 2027.Asked if Fleming had floated the idea, he said: "We haven't got round to that at the moment, but it would be a great story."Pressed on Stokes giving any indication of a change of heart, Key added: "No, he hasn't but I wouldn't be surprised. Anything's possible with Ben."No (bridges have been burned)... not at all. Not as far as I'm concerned."Fleming will not arrive in Britain until September, meaning he will not take charge of the three-match Test series against Pakistan, that starts in August.But Key played down concerns over Fleming's delayed start."My job is to get the best person," he said. "It wasn't a stipulation for any of the candidates that you had to be there for Pakistan."Had that been the case, that would have limited the field drastically." 

In implementation of the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani a team from the Qatar International Search and Rescue Group departed Doha Thursday for Torrejon Airport to support efforts to combat wildfires in Spain. The team comprises 129 wildfire specialists and will provide technical and logistical support. It is equipped with advanced firefighting vehicles, trucks, and equipment, as well as one helicopter dedicated to firefighting operations and another for evacuation missions. The mission reflects Qatar's longstanding approach of supporting and assisting sisterly and friendly countries and underscores its commitment to backing international efforts to ensure a rapid response to disasters and crises, thereby helping to protect lives.

His Excellency the Minister of Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani presented certificates Thursday to the second batch of graduates of the Security Command and Staff Programme.  The minister, who is also chairman of the Supreme Council of the Police Academy, handed the certificates to participants who completed the requirements of the programme, which is run by the academy's College of Graduate Studies. Heads and commanders of military and security agencies attended the ceremony.
