Rescue workers search for bodies at the site of a collapsed bridge at Bijonbari village in the Darjeeling district of the eastern state of West Bengal yesterday. The bridge packed with festival crowds collapsed killing at least 32 people. Scores of people fell into a fast-flowing river about 30km from Darjeeling when the walkway broke apart on Saturday night at an event organised by the local Gorkha Janmukti Morcha party. A steel cable of the bridge snapped as crowds clamoured for a view of speeches and a cultural programme during the five-day festival. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a compensation of Rs200,000 each to the families of those killed.
