Doctors treating sick spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba, one of the country’s most famous gurus, said yesterday he was continuing to show improvement.
However the 85-year-old remained on a ventilator, according to a statement issued by the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences in Sai Baba’s hometown, Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh.
The guru, who has a following of millions across the world, has been in hospital for nearly two weeks suffering from multiple problems including a heart condition, lung congestion and kidney failure.
There was “a perceptible improvement in the condition of his kidneys” and his lung infection has partially cleared, the statement said.
“Doctors attending upon him are on the whole satisfied with his stable condition of health and response to treatment,” the medical bulletin said.
Sai Baba is credited with many supernatural powers by his followers, including an ability to conjure objects out of thin air, remember past lives and cure terminal diseases.
He counts former prime ministers and presidents, top businessmen and even cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar among his followers, who are thought to number tens of millions in more than 100 countries.
Well-wishers have converged on Puttaparthi from nearby areas and abroad, many of them sleeping out in the open on pavements because of a lack of hotel rooms.
