A wildfire raging in central Portugal killed a man and destroyed several buildings, an official said yesterday.The victim had gone missing on Sunday. Paulo Fonseca, mayor of the municipality of Ourem, said he was killed by flames, but did not give details. The blaze also destroyed two residences, a plastic products factory and several uninhabited buildings, Fonseca said. Motorway traffic was temporarily disrupted in the area. More than 1,000 firefighters and soldiers were combating 19 wildfires countrywide, according to the civil protection authorities. Most of the fires were reported in the north and centre of the country. The man who died in Ourem was the third fatality claimed by wildfires in Portugal this summer.
