A Siberian tiger lies shot dead in a forest hours after it escaped from the local zoo of Sibiu (300km northwest from Bucharest), central Romania. The tiger was shot when it attacked the hunters who were trying to tranquillise it, Mirela Gligore, spokesperson for the Sibiu townhall, said. The big cat, a female, had escaped from the zoo in the morning, after the keeper apparently left the gate ajar. It was first seen in the forest sheltering the zoo but attempts to capture it failed when it managed to jump over the 1.8m fence. The feline then headed to the outskirts of the city, forcing local police to go from door to door to ask people to stay indoors for their own safety. It was eventually tracked down in a nearby forest and shot in the head
