HE the Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri met on Thursday with the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Gilbert F Houngbo in Geneva. During the meeting, the progress made during the four years of continuous technical co-operation program between the ILO and Qatar was reviewed.
The progress made during the program so far includes the adoption of new legislation and regulations related to the labour sector, as indicated in the latest ILO report issued earlier this week. In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue work in the areas of the labour sector, including occupational safety and health, and to support companies to review their policies and procedures in line with new legislation in the labour market.
This also includes areas of joint and continuous work to enhance international co-operation, exchange experiences, and develop effective and comprehensive policies for the labour market that contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the knowledge-based economy. HE the Minister of Labour affirmed the perpetuation of the joint technical co-operation between the Ministry of Labour and the ILO to underpin the labour sector in the country, stressing the sustainability of joint projects between both sides in the forthcoming years. He stressed that Qatar appreciates the joint efforts made through the distinguished partnership with ILO during the past four years, which appraised the reforms of the labour sector in Qatar.
He highlighted that Qatar is moving at a steady pace with labour sector reforms to achieve Qatar Vision 2030 and a commitment to building a modern and dynamic labour market. HE Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri extended his congratulations to Gilbert Houngbo on his election as ILOs Director-General, and invited him to visit Qatar during the coming period.
The recent labour reforms by Qatar have induced positive results, ILO Director-General Gilbert Hongbo stated, and thanked HE Dr al-Marri for his commitment to pursuing and implementing these reforms, in line with Qatar Vision 2030. He noted that ILO is ready to continue supporting Qatar, to achieve further improvements that benefit all workers.
