The first edition of the Hyatt Plaza Chess Championship, which was held over two days, has ended. During the first day, under-14 competitions were held with the participation of 140 male and female players over seven rounds, while the second day was held for all ages with the participation of 110 male and female players with 9 rounds. Sheikh Suhaim bin Khalid al-Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hyatt Plaza, watched players in action.
On the first day’s U-14 competitions, Rayan Irfan succeeded in clinching first place ahead of Indian youngster Albin Sagan who secured second place while his compatriot Abel Sajjan finished third.
Mohamed Salah al-Malik won the best Qatari player award (under 12 years) while the best player in under 10 was Mohamed Saleh al-Qahtani. Khaled al-Jamaat won the award for the best Qatari player under 8 years.
In girls’ competitions, Indian player Shivabria Jareesh won the title while the best Qatari player award in under 12 years was won by Moza al-Khulaif. Haya al-Hussein won the award for the best Qatari player (under 10 years), while Asma al-Hammadi was able to get the award for the best Qatari girl under 8 years old.
On the second day, which came with the participation of all ages, Egyptian player Mahmoud Badr succeeded in winning the title after a fierce and strong competition that extended until the last round.
Argentine Christian finished in second place while the player position was achieved by Youssef Mohamed al-Mutawa, who also succeeded in obtaining the Best Qatari Player award.
The Best Qatari Player award was won by Kholoud al-Khelaifi.
The winners were crowned during the closing ceremony headlined by Mohamed al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation (QCF), Yousef Mohamed al-Mutawa, secretary-general of the Federation, and Mohamed al-Hawamdeh, Head of Marketing at Hyatt Plaza. Al-Mutawa, secretary-general of QCF, said: “We are happy to cooperate with Hayat Plaza and organize the first edition. We hope to continue holding it in the future also.”
