The College of Medicine (CMED) at Qatar University (QU) organised the annual White Coat Ceremony to highlight the responsibility that students will feel towards their work and their patients while performing in medical field.
The event was aimed at celebrating the second-year medical students who successfully completed their transition year and entered the Medicine programme.

It was designed to acknowledge the students’ commitment to the medical profession and reassert values of compassion, professionalism and dedication to patient care.
The number of honoured students was 97, of whom 60 were Qataris.
Prof Asmaa al-Thani, QU vice-president for Medical Sciences, congratulated the students in a message presented during the ceremony, in which she recommended that the students arm themselves with science, perseverance, hard work, patience and the pursuit of excellence.
“This celebration aims to transfer students of the College of Medicine from the first-year stage to the second-year stage in the medical programme,” CMED dean Dr Marwan Abu Hijleh said in a statement. “It is an affirmation of the students’ commitment to the values of the medical profession and patient care.”
"Wearing the white coat for the first time means a lot in the lives of medical students, because it signifies the students’ responsibility to become future doctors and devote their lives to practising the profession in accordance with the highest international and humanitarian standards,” he added.
CMED associate dean for Academic Affairs Dr Mubarak Bidmos said: “Dear students, I would like to remind you that you must balance your expertise in science with compassion and empathy.”
“You will wear white coats in your clinical education training period such as: clinical skills sessions, PHCC (Primary Health Care Corporation) visits, and clinical rotations in hospitals,” he said. “Therefore, wearing a white coat during these activities gives you a sense of responsibility and privilege.”
“First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your acceptance into the College of Medicine at Qatar University,” CMED assistant dean for Student Affairs Dr Halema al-Faris said. “Qatar University proudly completed its progress at a steady pace, to be on the verge of entering the list of the best 200 universities in the world, according to the QS rankings.”
“Qatar University ranked 224, jumping from 245th in the previous classification, achieving an increase of 21 positions over its version last year of the same classification,” she pointed out.
Dr al-Faris noted that the CMED is striving to occupy advanced positions internationally and globally, and so far, has graduated two batches of doctors who are currently working at Hamad Medical Corporation.
The College of Medicine aims to make contributions to medical education, patient care, medical research and community outreach, and is fully aligned with Qatar’s national strategies in education and health, as well as the QU’s strategic plan.
