Jockey Tomas Lukasek and Selected combined to clinch the Sealine Cup at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s (QREC) fourth race meeting at the Al Rayyan Racecourse on Thursday.
The Mohamed Abdulhadi al-Hajri-owned four-year-old gelding, trained by Ibrahim Saeed al-Malki, raced to a half-length victory over the pair of Taxiwala and Faleh Bughanaim, who started as defending champions in the 1200m run for Thoroughbred Conditions race.
Finishing third behind Taxiwala in the QR100,000 race was Return To Senders, ridden by Marco Casamento. The victory marked second consecutive feature win for Lukasek, who won the Asherij Cup with Harab al-Naif on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Lukasek also bagged a win in Local Thoroughbred Handicap, guiding Aziza Al Zaeem – also trained by al-Malki – to fastest time in the 1750m race.
Meanwhile, Sharida bin Nasser bin Sharida al-Kaabi’s Shgarde was fastest in 1500m Purebred Arabian Handicap, claiming a half-length win over Akmar in day’s penultimate race carrying a prize purse of QR60,000. Alberto Sanna piloted the four-year-colt to win in an exciting race.
It was a successful day for jockey Hugo Besnier, who completed a hat-trick of wins by winning the three of first four races with Admiraal, Aajel and Kabeer. MHK al-Attiyah-trained AJS Medawi, with Szczepan Mazur in the saddle also stormed to victory in the Purebred Arabian Novice Plate, yesterday.
