The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs mourned the death of Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the founding chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, the official Qatar News Agency reports.
"The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs in the State of Qatar mourns the loss of preeminent Muslim scholar Sheikh Dr Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the former chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, who passed away on Monday," the ministry said in a statement Monday.
The statement added that the "Arab and Islamic nation has lost one of the most venerable religious scholars, who always defended Islamic causes and had an effective impact in spreading the Shariah message and Islam with wisdom and through the approach of moderation".
The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs extended sincere condolences to the bereaved family and to the Arab and Islamic nation, "praying the Almighty Allah to have mercy upon him, make paradise his last abode, and grant his family and the Arab and Islamic nations solace and fortitude".
A number of Qatari dignitaries also mourned the death of Sheikh al-Qaradawi and expressed condolences through tweets, including HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee; HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al?Kawari, State Minister and President of Qatar National Library; and Lolwah bint Rashid AlKhater, Assistant Foreign Minister, among others.
