The opening of the Hamad International Airport (HIA) expansion project will take place in October as per schedule, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive HE Akbar al-Baker has said.
He made the observation while speaking at the Global Tourism Forum in Brussels.
“At Hamad International Airport, we are preparing to inaugurate a key expansion that will fascinate travellers, and ensure an unparalleled experience at every touchpoint," HE al-Baker said, as tweeted by Qatar Airways.
He stressed that Qatar is fully prepared to host the largest international sporting event, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
"Qatar has ensured its readiness to host the FIFA World Cup, it has delivered eight stadiums ahead of schedule. We are excited to showcase our second-to-none sports infrastructure to the world," HE al-Baker said.
Regarding the forum, Qatar Airways said: "Aviation and tourism complement one another, and at the Global Tourism Forum, we witnessed joint efforts from industry leaders to explore opportunities and overcome challenges."
As Qatar prepares to welcome the world for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, HIA is at the peak of its ongoing preparations. HIA recently opened Oryx Garden Hotel, the second airport hotel within its award-winning terminal. Situated in the North Plaza, this is the latest venue where passengers can unwind during a layover.
The expansion project is set to increase airport capacity to over 58mn passengers. The growth of HIA will further continue post-FIFA World Cup where a second expansion is set to take the capacity to over 60mn passengers.
