Qatar University (QU) organised the National Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition 2022, that challenges Masters and PhD students to present their research within three minutes to the general public.
The first and second places were won by Zarwa Khan and Jack al-Twal, respectively from Texas A&M University at Qatar and the third place by Arwa al-Duails from Hamad Bin Khalifa University, a statement said.
QU has successfully conducted this event annually over the past eight years, and this year took the competition to the national level. All higher education institutions based in Qatar that offer thesis-based graduate programs were invited to participate.
In addition to the hosts, the other participants were Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Al Rayyan International University College, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, University of Calgary - Qatar, Oryx Universal College with Liverpool John Moores University, Qatar Finance and Business Academy - Northumbria University and Joan Bin Jassim Joint Command and Staff College.
In his speech on the occasion, QU president Dr Hassan Rashid al-Derham, stated that through the creation of scientific facilities and the growth of graduate programmes, QU has worked to build a solid infrastructure and increase the scope of its research.
"This competition is intended to explore and draw eminent students from graduate studies and scientific research, to recognise their potential, and to hone their inductive skills as our partners in Qatar work to develop solutions to the problems,” he explained.
In his keynote speech, Dr Abdullatif al-Khal, deputy chief medical officer and director of the Department of Medical Education at Hamad Medical Corporation explained that investing in research will lead to major changes and developments in the scientific infrastructure.
Official sponsor ConocoPhillips Qatar president Todd Creeger and QU vice president for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Mariam al-Maadeed spoke. The jury comprised Dr al-Khal, Dr Samer Adham (managing director, ConocoPhillips' Global Water Sustainability Center, Qatar Science & Technology Park), Ebtesam al-Mannai (executive director of finance, Qatar Investment Authority) and Hanan al-Emadi (Qatari broadcaster).
The 3MT competition was established by the University of Queensland in 2008. QU started organising this competition on its campus since 2015.
