With its multi-hued buildings, gardens with lush green lawns and granite pavements, the Old Doha Port is wearing a new look to welcome tourists during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported that the works to develop the port area into a tourist marina were completed by replacing the asphalt layer on the street with granite and setting up a park.
The works included the construction of the port neighbourhood while providing visitors with many services, including a commercial market, a fish market, retail stores, restaurants and cafes, a hotel, mooring berths for boats and ships and bicycle and walking paths. Also, the port has a terminal for receiving large cruise ships.
At an estimated cost of QR 2bn, the Doha Port development project aims to attract the local and international tourists coming from neighbouring countries in cruise ships. Aimed to become a pioneering facility with the highest international standards, the port is expected to secure Qatar’s position as a tourist destination while facilitating the expected growth in the number of cruises during the World Cup.
It’s expected that the Doha Port will soon turn into a permanent facility to receive cruise ships while becoming a tourist attraction in Central Doha. With the completion of the development project and the increase in the port's capacity to allow the reception of two giant ships at the same time, Qatar is expected to attract 500,000 visitors through cruise ships by 2026.
