The College of Business and Economics (CBE) at Qatar University (QU) is partnering with Metavisionaries to hold a 'Global Sustainability Space Challenge, in conjunction with the preparations for Qatar's hosting of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
The competition is organised by international partners including ICE Cubes and Space Applications Services, CBE dean Prof Rana Sobh told a press conference. Financed by Nasa, the European Space Agency, and the International Space University, the competition is sponsored locally by several organisations and agencies, including the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
"The competition emphasises the value of making use of space's boundless resources and what can be done to create a space economy and protect the environment," she explained.
The competition also offers young people a unique opportunity to learn about the significance of space exploration as the driving force behind international efforts to address the major problems threatening the sustainability of life on Earth.
Prof Dr Adam Fadlallah, associate dean for Academic Affairs, said the CBE has a number of achievements, most notably: introducing two Executive Masters Degrees for the first time at QU and a minor in taxation. The Department of Accounting at the CBE offers a minor in the field of business analytics.
Prof Dr Mostafa Hassan, head of the Accounting and Information Systems Department at CBE, announced the obtaining of specialised academic accreditation for accounting programmes from the International Association for the Advancement of Colleges of Business Accounting.
The department, the first in Qatar and among the one percent of all similar accounting programmes around the world that have this specialised accreditation, has renewed the professional accreditation from CPA Australia and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Management Accountants and another with the Qatar Association of Certified Accountants.
Prof Dr Muhammad Qaid, head of the Department of Finance and Economics, pointed out that the Finance and Accounting major has entered the ranks of the best 201-250 universities in the world according to the QS classification of universities for academic majors, in addition to entering the economics and econometrics majors among the best 401-450 universities.
The department has signed a MoU between QU and the Doha Chartered Financial Analysts Association and is applying for certification from the Chartered Management Institute, according to Dr Ibrahim al-Nawas, head of the Department of Management and Marketing at the institution.
The department will launch a new major in human resource management and is also applying for accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the largest organisation in the world for the development of professional marketers.
Dr Said al-Banna, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Academic Excellence, spoke about its role inside and outside Qatar and its work with QU’s partners in the public and private sectors and signing partnerships with relevant institutions.
The CBE's graduate students have participated in 31 research papers accepted and published in accredited international scientific journals, and the faculty members have published 149 articles in indexed scientific journals.
In addition to the faculty members receiving a large number of internal grants, they have also received 10 external grants granted by the Qatar National Fund for Scientific Research.
Prof Dr Belaid Aouni, associate dean for Research and Graduate Studies, stressed that the high-quality research outputs of faculty members and graduate students at the CBE contribute to the continuous enrichment and development of knowledge, and a positive impact on the business community.
In this context, Prof Sobh pointed out that within the vision of activating the role of scientific research and its practical applications to make a tangible impact in society, the first startup company Genesis Technologies was established in 2020 with a grant from Qatar National Research Fund.
Dr Karim El Yafi, one of the lead researchers on the project, explained that the company has developed a unique type of blockchain technology called “MaxYa” that aims to recycle the power of computational power in securing blockchain data to contribute to solving difficult mathematical problems. It has a direct application in the business world, for example, supply chain management and improving logistics operations in various fields.
Dr Mazen al-Masry, one of the main researchers in the project, said that this technology is environment friendly and is designed for sustainability and ease of joining the network without the need for advanced devices with a high carbon footprint.
