Qatar-Egypt relations are deep-rooted and historic, built on co-operation and mutual respect, Egyptian ambassador to Qatar Amr El-Sherbini has stressed.
He said the relations are currently undergoing a new phase, witnessing quick developments after a number of high-level visits between the two friendly countries that were crowned by the visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to Cairo in June.
Accordingly, the two sides are having great aspirations to take these mutual relations to even higher levels and broader horizons to further expand the fields of co-operation.
"There are many key priorities that we are keen to push forward, including commercial exchange and investment co-operation, to reflect the directives of the leaderships of both countries. Also, Qatari officials welcome the enhancement of co-operation with Egypt in all fields and the easing of hurdles and challenges in this regard," added El-Sherbini.
Accordingly, he referred to the successful official visit of the Egyptian Minister of Transport to Doha in April and the visit of the Egyptian Finance Minister, which saw the signing of different co-operation agreements in relevant fields. In addition, a good number of high-level Egyptian officials have visited Doha in the recent period and met with Qatari officials, investors and businesspersons to attract more Qatari investments to Egypt, and discuss the challenges and difficulties involved and resolve them.
The ambassador said a unit has been created to follow up and communicate with business owners to address their difficulties and the issues involved, in addition to the launch of the Egypt Digital Portal, which provides many services and digitalises around 90% of the public services provided to Egyptians and foreigners through easy access in order to avoid bureaucratic procedures.
He said Qatar ranks 10th among the major counties investing in Egypt and Qatari investments in the Egyptian market include around 231 companies with a total capital amounting to $4.6bn, with the Qatari participation amounting to about $2.2bn. These investments cover the petroleum and banking sectors and a number of hospitality and real estate companies. Further, an additional sum of $5bn of investments was announced during the visit of HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar to Cairo in March.
Meanwhile, El-Sherbini pointed out that there is active co-operation between Qatar and Egypt in the education, sports and culture sectors. For instance, some 36 Egyptian publishers took part in the Doha International Book Fair in January. He also stressed the keenness of Egypt to facilitate the travel of as many Egyptian fans as possible to take attend the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, adding that Egypt is keen to offer all possible support to make this event a great success for Qatar and the Arab world.
Further, the ambassador noted that the Egyptian expatriate community in Qatar plays a great role in enhancing bilateral relations, especially as Qataris highly appreciate their contributions to the progress and development of the country in different fields. He said the embassy is working hard to address any difficulties faced by the Egyptian community in co-ordination with the entities concerned in Qatar, who also offer their timely co-operation in this regard.
The envoy said Egypt have a variety of unique investment opportunities with a positive outlook in spite of the global challenges, especially in clean energy, transport, infrastructure and many other fields with great incentives for foreign investors.
