*Turkish people defeated the coup attempt six years ago and today Türkiye has emerged stronger in all fields: Ambassador Göksu Qatari-Turkish relations are 'distinctive'; Qataris urged to visit Turkish tourist centres
The Turkish embassy in Doha marked the 6th anniversary of the failed coup to overthrow the Turkish government, with a reception hosted by the Turkish Ambassador Dr Mustafa Göksu and attended by senior diplomats and members of the Turkish community in Qatar.
On the 6th anniversary of the Democracy and National Unity Day on July 15, Dr Göksu stressed that “the coup attempt was targeting the Turkish people, democratic gains and their capabilities, and the terrorist organisation (FETO) tried to overthrow the legitimate government of the Turkish state on July 15, 2016. However, their plan failed thanks to the vigilance of the Turkish people.”

He said that after Türkiye has “nipped this strife in the bud”, it was able to rebuild the state's apparatus to ensure that this crisis would not be repeated, so that Türkiye would remain a country enjoying democracy and peaceful transfer of power through elections and ballot boxes, and not ammunition boxes. Ambassador Göksu stressed that his country will not forget the stand of the brothers in Qatar with Türkiye, and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, was the first leader to condemn the coup among world leaders.

He also praised Qatar's supportive and solidarity stance with his country, and its condemnation and denunciation of the failed coup attempt that took place in Türkiye six years ago.
He further stressed that, in every situation and occasion, Türkiye has always praised the position of Qatar, which was one of the first countries to announce its solidarity with the constitutional legitimacy of Türkiye, and rejected the coup attempt that took place. At the same time, he noted the popular solidarity expressed by the Qatari people with Türkiye by various means at that time.

He described the Qatari-Turkish relations as “distinctive”, and said: “There is great co-operation between the two countries in various fields, and we will not forget the Qatari stance in support of constitutional legitimacy in Türkiye.”
Regarding Qatar's organisation of the World Cup, ambassador Göksu said: “We are closely following the process of organising the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Qatar.”
“We are waiting for the World Cup to start in Qatar, and put all our capabilities at the service of our brothers to achieve an exceptional tournament.
"We welcome the first World Cup to be held in an Islamic country, and we believe that this event, hosted by Qatar, will be successful, and the tournament will enhance Qatar's position on the world sports map as a major destination for major sporting events.”
He noted: “Türkiye is experienced in hosting international sporting events, so I would like to announce that we are ready to help in any way possible, and I am confident that Qatar will organise an exceptional tournament like never before.”
He said: “HE President Erdogan gave us the green light to put all our efforts and capabilities in the service of the success of this event. Türkiye is co-operating with Qatar in contributing to the success of the World Cup through co-operation in the security field and organising major events. We are like a brother waiting for his brother's wedding.”
On the economic situation in his country, ambassador Göksu said: “The performance of the Turkish economy appeared in a strong manner with the lifting of restrictions related to the Corona pandemic, and the national income grew by 21.7% in the second quarter of this year”.
He added, “Türkiye has become the second country with the highest growth rate in the world after the United Kingdom”.
“The main indicators show that Turkish economic activity continued to maintain its strength in the third quarter of this year, supported by strong foreign demand”, he added.
“Recently, investment and employment trends in Turkish companies have reached very high levels compared to previous years, and it is noted that employment in companies continues to improve during the third quarter of this year”, he added.
He also said: “Türkiye’s current account balance is expected to post a surplus for the rest of the year, supported by the strong increase in exports and the recovery of the tourism sector after the lifting of travel restrictions due to the pandemic”.
“Of course, there are some temporary problems related to fluctuations in the exchange rate of the local currency, rising import bills and food prices, and increasing inflation in the country. However, it is expected that the temporary factors affecting inflation expectations will lose their effect in the short term, and inflation will enter a downward trend in the last quarter of this year,” he noted.
Dr Göksu also called on Qatari tourists to visit Türkiye, describing it as their “second country”, and enjoy the charming nature there. He stressed the "existence of a deep historical brotherhood" linking the two countries.
He pointed out that tourists can spend happy times in Türkiye, where they will find charming nature, modern culture, historical depth and tourism diversity.
“The city of Istanbul, which includes the Bosporus, the Hagia Sophia mosque and many Roman and Ottoman palaces, is a great place for tourism”, he added, and called on “Qatari tourists to visit Turkish tourist cities and states in various Turkish regions and cities."
The Turkish ambassador stressed the great leap achieved by his country in the field of tourism , noting that "tourism revenues in Turkey recorded an increase of 122.4%, during the first quarter of 2022, compared to the same period last year, according to the data of the Turkish Statistics Authority (governmental) for the period between January and March.
On the issue of gas and energy, Dr Göksu noted that “In his latest statement on gas discoveries, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed that Türkiye will start in the first quarter of 2023 to pump 10mn cu m of natural gas per day from the field discovered in the Black Sea.”
Further, the ambassador said that the Turkish defence industries have strengthened the capacity of the Turkish army and security forces with many local weapons and equipment during the past year. He also referred to the “Istanbul Financial Centre”, which plays an important role in the field of financing at the regional and international levels, and the Gulf countries intend to participate in the center, which has been completed 81% and is expected to start leasing in a short time. "Besides, products of the automotive sector in Türkiye were exported to 193 countries in the five continents, with a total value of $29.3bn during 2021, which enabled this sector to occupy the first place in Türkiye’s exports, which has become the 14th largest car manufacturer in the world."
