The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) is paying much attention towards increasing the green spaces in the country, a senior official has said.
Farhoud Hadi al-Hajri, director of the Public Relations Department at MoECC, told Qatar Radio that the ministry is co-operating with the Ministry of Municipality to make use of the treated sewage effluent to irrigate the green spaces across Qatar.
“There are several initiatives, meant to protect the environment and fight climate change. The ministry has been implementing these projects for the past several years while joining hands with government institutions, private companies and individuals. The ministry continues to implement these initiatives while maintaining good cooperation and relations with the government and institutions and individuals,” al-Hajri explained.
The official pointed out that the hawksbill turtles protection project site has succeeded in contributing towards enriching the marine environment in the country and the ministry could release more than 35,000 baby turtles over the past few years.
The project to protect the endangered hawksbill turtles, which started in 2003, is being implemented at Ras Laffan, Jassassiya, Maroona, Fuwairit and Al-Mfier by the ministry in cooperation with the Environmental Science Centre at Qatar University with funding from QatarEnergy.
