Qatar saw a strong-double digit year-on-year jump in the building permits issued in May with Al Shamal, Umm Slal, Doha and Al Wakra municipalities outpacing the national average, according to the official statistics.
The total number of building permits issued in Qatar saw an 85.3% surge on an annualised basis to 645 in May this year, said the Planning and Statistics Authority.
On a yearly basis, total building permits issued in Al Shamal saw a huge 233.3% increase, followed by Umm Slal (161.1%), Doha (130.6%), Al Wakra (109.2%), Al Daayen (74.1%) and Al Rayyan (53.2%); while Al Shahaniya saw a 16.7% decline in the review period.
The building permits data is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.
The latest survey rather lends support to the Qatar Financial Centre's latest PMI data that suggested rebound of non-oil sector, particularly construction, since the beginning of the second quarter.
The PSA data showed that of the total number of new building permits issued, Al Rayyan constituted 167 permits or 26% of the total, Doha 166 (26%), Al Wakra (136 or 21%), Al Daayen 94 (15%), Umm Slal 47 (7%), Al Khor 15 (2%), Al Shahaniya and Al Shamal 10 (2% each).
The new building permits (residential and non-residential) constituted 52% (334 permits) of the total building permits issued in May 2022, additions 45% (291 permits) and fencing 3% (20 permits).
Of the new residential buildings permits, villas topped the list, accounting for 77% (198 permits) of the total, dwellings of housing loans 14% (36) and apartments 8% (21).
Among the non-residential sector, commercial structures accounted for 79% or 62 permits, the industrial buildings as workshops and factories 10% (eight permits) and the governmental buildings 8% (six permits).
Qatar saw a 14.8% year-on-year expansion in the total building completion certificates issued in May 2022 with Al Daayen reporting an 82.8% surge, followed by Al Khor (60%), Al Shamal (25%), Al Wakra (14.8%) and Al Rayyan (6.1%); whereas Al Shahaniya saw a 33.3% decline in the review period.

Of the 167 residential buildings completion certificates issued, as many as 111 or 66% were for villas, 39 or 23% for dwellings of housing loans, 12 or 7% for the apartments and five or 3% for non-specified classified as others.
Of the 111 villas completion certificates issued this May, as many as 30 were in Al Daayen, 23 in Al Rayyan, 21 in Al Wakra, 13 in Doha, 11 in Umm Slal, five each in Al Khor and Al Shamal, and three in Al Shahaniya.
Of the 39 dwellings of housing loans completion certificates issued, Al Rayyan saw 19, Al Wakra (eight), Al Daayen (seven), Umm Slal (three), and Doha and Al Khor (one each).
In the case of 12 apartments, Doha issued seven; while the other five were distributed among Al Rayyan, Al Wakra, Al Daayen, Al Khor and Al Shahaniya.
