As a follow-up to a meeting between HE the Minister of Culture Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad bin Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani and Indonesian ambassador Ridwan Hassan on May 16, a delegation from the Directorate General of Culture of Indonesia’s ministry of education, culture, research and technology visited Qatar from May 28 to June 1.
The delegation met officials from Qatar's Ministry of Culture, Qatar Foundation (QF), Qatar Museums (QM), National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ), Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), Qatar National Library (QNL), Doha Fire Station, and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.
A number of issues and strategies were discussed, particularly in relation to the Qatar-Indonesia Year of Culture which kicks off next year.
One of the themes that will be brought by the Indonesian team during next year’s Year of Culture is coffee.
The product has connected Indonesia and Arab culture for a long time.
“It is not only about the coffee product per se, but also about the coffee culture which links the two countries,” said Indonesian delegation head Magdalena. “We are very enthusiastic in introducing Indonesian coffee culture to the public in Qatar.”
The delegation also discussed enhancing cultural co-operation between the two countries, in particular between museums.
“Qatar has been known for its professionalism in managing museums, while Indonesia has hundreds of museums across the archipelago with abundant collections,” she said. “So, I think, it is good for both countries to explore the possibility of having closer co-operation on museums.”
"Topics on literature, sports, fashion, and film were also discussed,” Magdalena added. “In short, we are really keen to deeply collaborate with Qatar, not only during Qatar-Indonesia Year of Culture in 2023, but also beyond the event. We have to think about the legacy of our Cultural Year."
Furthermore, cultural co-operation between the two countries is expected to have an impact, both on people-to-people relations, and on creative economic sectors of the countries.
"As has been underlined by the ambassador during the meeting with HE the Minister of Culture, the cultural co-operation between the two countries should have a spill-over effect, particularly in the area of economics," said Ali Murtado from the Indonesian embassy in Doha.
