The Ministry of Public Health carried out an expanded awareness campaign in May, as part of events marking World Hand Hygiene Day. The initiative was held in co-operation with the Hamad Medical Corporation, the Primary Health Care Corporation, as well as the private health sector.
Health workers, health facilities' managers, CEOs and policy makers participated in the campaign which covered the entire healthcare facilities in Qatar and a number of schools. The aim of the campaign was to promote, enhance and highlight the importance of hand washing practices at health facilities and to operationalise effective measures of hand hygiene in various places that offer healthcare.

The awareness campaign, implemented by the Department of Strategic Planning and Performance at the Ministry of Public Health received significant interaction from all health institutions in Qatar.
The campaign included awareness activities on World Hand Hygiene Day which falls on May 5.
The campaign saw the presentation of educational plays on healthy habits and the importance of hand washing, in addition to the participation of the audience in a practical application on how to wash hands.

A team from the Public Health Department of the Ministry of Public Health participated in the campaign by conducting awareness activities at major companies in Qatar. These included field visits and awareness activities physically and virtually, which were presented in a number of foreign languages, in an effort to simplify information and educate the workers. Souvenirs were also distributed to the attendees.
The infection control team concluded the hand hygiene campaign by organising a ceremony at the Al Waab Health Centre, during which the efforts of health workers, including nurses, doctors, decision makers and others, were highlighted and a number of campaign participants honoured.
The World Health Organisation data states that adherence to hand hygiene can prevent up to 50% of acquired infections, including infections that have an impact on health personnel.
Good hand hygiene practices are critical to improving the safety of patients, health workers and the community at large, as maintaining good hand hygiene helps protect the community from infection and disease.
