The Institution of Engineers (India) Qatar chapter in association with World Federation of Engineering Organisation-CIC celebrated the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on the theme 'Digital Technologies for older persons and healthy ageing.'
More than 100 engineers attended the online event.
Dr Sam Pitroda, described as the father of India’s Computer and IT revolution, was the chief guest. He explained that the occasion is to raise awareness about the opportunities and possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) brings to nations, societies, and economies.
Year 2022 Telecom Day theme raises awareness of the important role of telecommunications/ICTs in supporting people to stay healthy, connected and independent - physically, emotionally and financially. Supporting a life of healthy ageing is also critical for the sustainability of economic and health systems.
Angeline Premalatha, counsellor, Embassy of India, Qatar, inaugurated the celebration. She emphasised the role of digital transformation and elaborated that the world is shifting from analog to digital faster than ever before, further exposing humanity to the vast promise and peril of new technologies. While the digital era has brought society many incredible benefits, we also face many challenges such as growing digital divides, cyber threats, and human rights violations online, she pointed out.
Dr Hemant O Thakare, president, The Institution of Engineers (India), in his presidential address mentioned access to digital technologies isn’t just a moral responsibility, but essential for global prosperity and sustainability.
Engineer Ahmed Jassim al-Jolo, president, Arab Engineers Federation; Dr S S Rathore, chair, World Federation of Engineering Organisation – CIC; Asif Rahmany, deputy president, Engineers Australia; Prof Suprava Patnaik, dean, Kalinga University, India were guests of honour.
Engineer Abdul Sathar, honorary chairman, IEI Qatar chapter welcomed the gathering, introduced the guest speakers to the gathering and talked about the topic of the event. Honorary secretary Dr Abdul Hameed compered. Qatar chapter of the Institution of Engineers (India) was established 30 years ago.
