QU marks graduation of 45th batch Wednesday, Thursday

Qatar University (QU) will Wednesday and Thursday celebrate the graduation of 3,436 students from 45th batch (Class of 2022).
Under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, His Highness the Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Thani will witness Wednesday the graduation ceremony of male students at the QU Sports and Events Complex.
On Thursday, His Highness the Amir's consort Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim al-Thani will patronise the graduation ceremony of the outstanding female students.
The ceremonies will include graduates - bachelors, diploma, masters and doctorate- of the semesters: Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 in addition to those who are expected to graduate by the end of Spring 2022.
Since its establishment in 1973, through the College of Education, QU has embarked on the path of progress and development, which placed it among the ranks of international universities, as confirmed by international classifications.
As a national university and the first university in Qatar, QU has hitherto produced more than 60,000 graduates, including the Class of 2022.
During the last five years, QU has continued its important achievements, at various academic and research sectors and in infrastructure.
There are 11colleges now, representing Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Law, Shariah and Islamic Studies, Engineering, Education, Medicine (which celebrated the graduation of the first batch last year), Pharmacy, Health Sciences, and Dental Medicine, as well as the College of Nursing which will receive the first batch the next academic year. All of these colleges currently have 20,000 students.
During the past five years, QU has witnessed an increase in the number of graduate programmes, which have reached more than 70 and cover various disciplines. The university has succeeded in obtaining international accreditations for 26 academic programmes.
QU's vice president for academic affairs Dr Omar al-Ansari told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that over the past five years the university has worked on developing academic courses and programmes through many topics, including the academic planning process 2020-24, which aims to provide a clear and coherent vision for the growth of the portfolio over the next five years. In this context, a comprehensive process has been launched to review current programmes and their performance, and to review proposals for new programmes and initiatives in light of market needs and trends.
Dr al-Ansari said the past four years witnessed the addition of more than 29 academic programmes at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (Masters and PhD) and more than seven programmes of sub-disciplines and sub-specialties, and more than 40 academic programmes distributed between the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in addition to introducing more than 100 improvements to all university programmes and curricula.
The restructuring of the Academic Excellence Programme, resulted in an increase of Qataris from 18.5% to 38%, and an increase in the number of Qatari scholarship students to more than 100, with them completing their postgraduate studies (Masters and PhD) at universities in the US, the UK, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and other countries, and the strengthening of co-operation and partnerships through 100 agreements and memoranda of understanding with local institutions, universities and international institutions.
The Institutional Research and Analytic Department director Dr Moumen Hasnah said work in underway to apply for the final stage of obtaining the initial level of WSCUC Accreditation. Research and Graduate Studies vice president Professor Mariam al-Maadeed told QNA that approval has been obtained to establish a Qatar University Technology Company, to nurture and develop innovations that serve the local and global community.
QU currently occupies a prominent position among best international universities, reaching the 224th place at the global level, according to the QS World University Rankings. The university also achieved the second place for the best universities in the Arab world according to the classification of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and is now moving towards further advancement at all levels.
